The Scrappy / James Bond

Go To

In a series as old and prolific as Bond, there’s bound to be characters who nobody likes.

  • Mary Goodnight from The Man with the Golden Gun is often cited as one of the worst Bond Girls in the franchise alongside Stacey Sutton and Christmas Jones (who are mentioned below) due to Britt Ekland's Dull Surprise acting and the character constantly coming across as The Load, a Damsel in Distress, a Dumb Blonde, and a bad example of the Ditzy Secretary despite supposedly being a trained secret agent. It also doesn't help that Andrea Anders, the secondary Bond Girl played by Maud Adams (who would return as the main Bond Girl in Octopussy), is widely considered to be much better-acted and a more interesting character only to be unceremoniously killed off halfway through the film. The real kicker, though? The Goodnight from the novels was likeable and competent, a far cry from the absurdly stupid and clumsy Ms. Fanservice the script uses her as.
  • Bibi Dahl from For Your Eyes Only is usually regarded as rather off-putting, being a teenage girl who comes on to much older men. She is also unnecessary in the plot, and it doesn't help that Melina Havelock and the Countess Lisl are much more interesting and complex Bond Girls.
  • Stacey Sutton from A View to a Kill is the epitome of a Damsel Scrappy: she screams at the slightest provocation, gets captured at the most inconvenient times and forces Bond to rescue her, and fails to notice Zorin sneaking up on her in a zeppelin. The cherry on the sundae? She somehow survives over the much cooler (and hotter) May Day.
  • Dr. Christmas Jones from The World Is Not Enough is hated for generally existing only so that Bond has a backup girl when the infinitely-more-interesting primary love interest, Elektra King, turns out to be evil. Not to mention the casting of Denise Richards as a brilliant nuclear physicist.
  • Verity from Die Another Day (the one with the unnecessary CGI and the pointless Ice Palace) received a cold reception from critics and audiences. Aside from serving as a superfluous cameo from Madonna (who composed the film's theme song), her acting suffers from Dull Surprise and she has absolutely no chemistry with the rest of the cast, either. Madonna even won a Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Supporting Actress at that year's ceremony.
  • Dominic Greene from Quantum of Solace is popularly cited as the weakest of the Craig-era villains, and one of the most underwhelming Big Bads in the franchise's history. He doesn't have any of the visceral psychosis or sadism of his predeccessor Le Chiffre or his successors Silva and Oberhauser, and he overall comes off more as a shyster trying to make a quick buck than as a Worthy Opponent for MI6's top agent. It's perhaps telling that, although Spectre acknowledges him as an agent of the titular organization and his photo is seen briefly, he isn't included in the literal Rogues Gallery towards the end.
  • His henchman Elvis from the same film isn't much better in this regard, sharing similar issues with Greene and often being regarded as The Load. There's also the fact that, while most Bond villains and henchmen are known for having a particularly quirky physical distinction, his apparently being having a dodgy toupee makes him hard to take seriously.
