Recap / Hamster & Gretel S1E02 "Oakey Dokey"
aka: Hamster And Gretel S 1 E 2 Oakey Dokey

Go To

Kevin is annoyed that Gretel keeps ignoring his instructions in favor of just punching things, as evident on when they extinguish a fire at the local popcorn factory. Gretel punching the water tower during that incident causes a chain reaction that leads into a meteor heading straight to Earth, to which the two siblings disagree again on how to stop it.

Tropes:

  • Bookends: The ending scenes are paralleled with scenes from the cold open of "Oakey Dokey's" sister episode, "Empower Failure":
    • Right before the intro theme, Kevin sighs in the driver's seat "Yep, this is my life", as the camera pans out to reveal Hamster and Gretel carrying the broken down minivan. Near the end of "Oakey Dokey", the same thing happens, except that Kevin, now accepting the events that have transpired, says "Yep, this is my life" in a much more content way while wearing sunglasses.
    • In the cold open, Kevin and Gretel inspect the minivan's hood after it broke down, right before the aliens arrive to bestow Gretel and Hamster with superpowers to use for good. In the final scene of "Oakey Dokey", two adolescents called Lyle and Lauren inspect their car's hood after their car broke down, right before the very same aliens arrive to them as well, and to bestow them with superpowers too... except to use for evil instead.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: When Gretel tells Kevin that a chunk of the meteor broke off, she freaks out when the chunk was about to destroy Oakey. After that, Gretel lets out a Big "NO!".
  • Inciting Incident: Gretel punching the water tower to extinguish the fire causes the tower's cover to shoot into the depths of space, not only breaking off a satellite's solar panel, but also hitting a meteor, changing its course to hit Earth. Gretel punching said meteor causes a chunk of it to break off, and crashing into Oakey, destroying the old oak tree in pieces. This would've never happened if Gretel just listened to Kevin's instructions.
  • Ignored Aesop: With the old tree destroyed, Kevin explains with sorrow that Gretel's actions have consequences and that not everything can be solved by using superpowers... only for Hamster to rebuild Oakey during Kevin's speech using superpowers and glue.
  • Inconsistent Episode Lengths: This episode is significantly shorter, since the pilot episode was much longer than a normal 11-minute episode.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: You know it's bad when even the Idiosyncratic Wipes not only show overly sad faces of Hamster and Gretel instead of neutral/happy ones, but that the wipe itself is played much slower with melancholy music.
  • Reused Character Design: The fireman chief at the beginning of the episode look almost identical to Richard Chase, Melissa's dad from Milo Murphy's Law.
  • Shout-Out: One building has a Totally Tools ad.
  • Water Tower Down: Gretel punches the water tower to extinguish the fire, which ends up with the tower's roof rocketing to space and hitting all sorts of objects.
