Recap / DEATH BATTLE! S08E11 - Macho Man VS Kool-Aid Man

Go To

Just before getting into the 150th episode, Wiz and Boomstick are interrupted by a call from their friend Ringmaster, who has urgent news.

Ringmaster: Boomstick, bud! You'll never believe this, I found your dad!

As the hosts group in a forest, Ringmaster starts going over the single hint he has from a guy he knows: he's wearing red. Wiz, confused at first, decides not to awnser. And right before they comment on a random brick wall, it's destroyed as soon as it was manifested by one Macho Man Randy Savage.

Known outside the ring as Randy Poffo, he entered the wrestling business in 1963 underneath the moniker Randy Savage, Macho Man. And in a decade, he had already seized the title of the World Wrestling Federation's heavyweight champion. Randy is capable of bench pressing over 300 pounds and has even brute-forced his way out of a straightjacket, while he's more famous for ending any of his winning rounds with the elbow drop, witch also happens to be capable of bringing people back to life.

That's not to say Randy has been badass outside the ring before; he's won against Spider-Man and even fought the legendary Chuck Norris, the same man who has, among other things, pushes the Earth down whenever he does a push-up.

However, the Macho Mans rundown is interrupted by another brick-wall smashing competitor: The Kool-Aid Man.

Before he became the property-damaging godlike mascot he is now, Kool-Aid Man started out as a living juice pitcher, until the evil thirst-causing Thirsties attacked Earth, threatening the balance of hydration and drought. This caused that pitcher to grow limbs, mobility, intelligence and power over juice to combat the Thirsties and save humanity from the concept of thirst itself.

Despite his large stature, the Kool-Aid Man is not one to give up, daring to pursue his foe's even in the face of time-travel and space. He's also crazy strong, being able to break through any surface, be it wood, brick, steel, and even alloys. But what really matters about the Kool-Aid Man is his power over the titular drink itself, he can summon it and bend it to his will, and among other things, can also teleport, enlarge himself ala former Death Battle competitor Smokey the Bear, and is even capable of generating walls just so he can smash into them.

Back on the Kool-Aid magic, he's capable of telekinetically manipulating anything related to it, and can even use it to open portals to the Kool-Aid dimension. Other feats include turning mountains into Kool-Aid Mountain Twists, launching people with enough force to spin the moon, and manipulate matter. But since the hosts are absent from the lab, Wiz calls up Jocelyn the intern so they can calculate the mountain feat.

Considering the mountains look like strato volcanoes, and based on their size, the Kool-Aid Man would have needed to pull 119 teratons of kinetic energy to spin and morph them. More than the output of the sun(witch the Kool-Aid Man accidentally broke once). The rundown temporarily snaps back to Randy Savage, as he also has advert-based powers that activate whenever he takes a bite of a Slim Jim, lending him explosive powers that include teleportation, shapeshifting, and even twisting the fabric of reality. Although this pales in comparison to the Slim Jims apparent control over elements, being able to make tornadoes, lightning, or gusts of wind powerful enough to blow someones hair right off the scalp. He's even eaten so many, he's been able to permanently keep those powers. As his time as the evil overlord Rasslor, he one-shotted Major Glory, who was capable of running 35 times faster than the speed of light.

As Jocelyns muse about the two going head-to-head, it's exactly what is about to happen. One advertisement for the Bluechew service later, and it's time for a Death Battle!

As the two bellow out their shared catchphrases, Boomstick urges his supposed dad to start things out.

FIGHT!

The two lock fists, with Randy going in for a punch. The Kool-Aid Man catches it, but cannot predict Randy turning it around and tossing him into trees...but with a wink, Kool-Aid Man reverses his predicament and goes in for a successful dropkick on the Macho Man. As Randy reels back, he snaps a Slim Jim, lighting it ablaze, and uses a thunderbolt to attack the Kool-Aid Man, who shields himself from the attack, only to find Randy going in for an elbow drop. As the fight rages on, Wiz and Boomstick rattle on about extra feats, such as how Kool-Aid Man once turned all of the world into Kool-Aid, and how his tears were capable of raising grass and even bringing back the dead, such as how he brought back fellow mascot Mr. Peanut at his funeral, albeit as a child. Randy on the other hand, can turn his fingers into snakes and even become a drago- oh, wait. That's a Skyrim mod. But rest assured, Ringmaster assures the Macho Man can win this fight, letting Boomstick borrow the legendary catchphrase(much to Wiz's annoyance).

We cut back to the battle as Randy and Kool-Aid Man rebound, Randy about to utilize his blazing Slim Jim...until the Kool-Aid Man turns it into pure Kool-Aid. As the drop falls to the ground, creating a portal, both combatants fall into the Kool-Aid dimension, as cheers of children welcome them. Randy seemingly gets the upper hand, but is stopped by a stream of orange Kool-Aid, witch Kool-Aid Man uses to trap the Macho Man within his body as they exit the claymation-like dimension.

But even as the Kool-Aid Man has Randy incapacitated, he didn't account for the fact that Randy would instead vaccum up all the Kool-Aid within the pitcher, causing the Kool-Aid Man to react in fear as Randy busts out of his glass prison.

But as Randy celebrates his victory, he forgot about the Kool-Aid Mans power over the titular juice, and as bubbles emerge from Randy's chest, Randy only has a few seconds to realize before rainbow blood erupts from his chest.

Boomstick tearfully approaches his dad...only for Randy to quickly confirm they are not related before dying, leaving only one other red-clad person around...

KO!

Jocelyne and DUMMI immediately get into the details of why of the new candidate of being Boomstick's father could overcome even Macho Man Randy Savage, despite his better fighting skills. Simply put, smashing the sun put the Kool-Aid Man above the hypothetical planet-busting levels of Randy's character Rasslor. To be fair, Randy was given the speed advantage via running 500 laps around the world making him 29 times faster but the difference in power was too notable to overcome. Not to mention, the combination of Kool-Aid Man's unique biology and his powerset made him even more hard to harm; being both the pitcher and the liquid inside of it, he could heal himself with any of the Kool-Aid he summoned out of thin air.

Jocelyne: I suppose Macho Man didn't have the thirst to win.
DUMMI: Was that a joke?
Jocelyn: Ugh, do you have an off switch?
DUMMI: Yes. Anyway, the winner is the Kool-Aid Man. Obviously.

As Boomstick reels in horror he might be the spawn of Kool-Aid, Wiz comes back with the tip guy, who just so happens to be Deadpool. While he doesn't know who or where Boomsticks father is, he does say Randy knows, but he's kinda dead. Thankfully, hope is not lost as the Kool-Aid Man lends the Macho Mans corpse a droplet of Kool-Aid on his tongue, miraculously bringing Randy back to life. As the two agree on another fight to the death next week, Boomstick finally gets fed up with the stalling and demands to know where his father is.

The scene cuts to a trailer in the middle of the forest, as the three hosts walk up to the front. As Boomstick knocks, the door is blasted off it's hinges by one Mama Boomstick.

Receiving a hug from his beloved momma, Boomstick can't help but shed tears over the fact that his dad was absent, and turns out, his mom shares that pain. But Mama Boomstick confesses she's learned from this: What you want in the dark past, might have you forget you have better things in the bright present. Or as mother and son put it out..

Boomstick: You can't always get what you want...
Mama Boomstick: But you just might find what 'cha need.

And as Boomstick joyfully runs from his mommas gunshots(Wiz and Ringmaster less joyful about it), one certain red-clad soldier realizes a possible outcome as a constellation of the Macho Man and the Kool-Aid Man illuminates the sky.

Sarge: Great Zeus's juices! Did I have a... son?

Next time on Death Battle...

Randy Savage VS The Kool-Aid Man contains examples of:

  • Breaking Old Trends:
    • Unlike previous episodes, this episode is a more story-based one that focuses on the conclusion of the "Boomstick's father" arc.
    • Ringmaster and Jocelyn physically appear in this episode, as opposed to appearing in spinoffs.
    • In contrast to previous battles, we can see Wiz, Boomstick, and Ringmaster spectate the match.
  • Breather Episode: A jolly brawl between two Large Ham's who shout "OH YEAH!" as their Character Catchphrase, ending with the loser getting brought back to life(a rarity in Death Battles), that came right after a fight between two psychotic time-traveling maniacs who level a city, and right before the Halloween episode, starring two of anime's deadliest and most terrifiying vampires.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Boomstick's father issues are the main point of the episode, ending with him finally letting go.
    • After it was previously hinted in the Meta vs. Carolina, Sarge ends up realizing that he might be Boomstick's father after all.
  • Formula-Breaking Episode: The episode takes a major departure from the show's formula. Wiz and Boomstick spend almost the whole episode outside of the lab (they were only in the lab during the intro) and interact with the fighters while the analysis on the lab (including the ending pun) is done by Jocelyn and DUMMI. The analysis covers both combatant back-and-forth instead of one-by-one. Wiz and Boomstick directly spectate the fight and even do some analysis during it. The episode itself is more about the story of Boomstick trying to find his father rather than the battle between the fighters.
  • Medium Blending: Unlike everyone else, Sarge's 3-D model blends in with the hand-drawn background.
  • Medium-Shift Gag: The battle is normally hand-drawn, but at one point it shifts to stop-motion before going back to hand-drawn animation.
  • The Reveal: Sarge is Boomstick's father, but he doesn't interact with him here.
Sarge: Great Zeus's juices! Did I have a... son?
