Narm / Spider-Man: The Animated Series

Go To

When you have a superhero action/adventure series mixed with Executive Meddling that is going above and beyond to make it kid-friendly, it inevitably results in plenty of moments of unintentional hilarity.

  • The show was pretty infamous for seeking to avoid every variation of "die" or "kill". Sometimes the aversion of the word death would take the dialogue into this territory. In the episode "Return of Hydro-Man, Part II", Mary Jane says, with all seriousness, "I just can't shake the feeling that when we find out what's wrong with me, it's going to lead to my destruction!". Serious intents or not, try saying that out loud and see what kind of reaction you get. This Mary Jane was later revealed to be a clone, and did indeed die shortly later.
  • The SHOOOOOOOOCKERRRRRRRR!!!!!!! line mentioned in Memetic Mutation. It might also fall into Narm Charm seeing how it's actually supposed to be Spidey losing his mental grip and going off the deep end. Still, the moment is so hammy and the fact that such a performance is put on for a C-list Butt-Monkey villain of all people only exposes how humorous it is.
  • Peter's bloodcurdling Big "NO!" when he loses Mary Jane (or rather her clone) has gotten some laughs because the moment is just played so big. Can perhaps fall into a degree of Narm Charm since having the woman you love melt away with almost no warning would get a pretty big response from most, but fans can't quite come to a consensus on if it's genuinely tragic, astonishingly melodramatic, or some hilarious combination of the two.
  • While the show's attempt to make a kid-friendly adaptation of The Night Gwen Stacey Died is decent, it also gives the perfect example of why this Mary-Jane has her Damsel Scrappy reputation. Unlike Gwen who was knocked off the bridge by accident during a struggle, or even Raimi's MJ who was thrown off it, this MJ somehow manages to stumble over a railing and fall off by herself while Spidey and Green Goblin are fighting elsewhere. After Spidey saves her, a bit later the bridge is damaged causing her to fall again. While the second fall can actually be quite heartbreaking, the circumstances around the first one make it very difficult to take seriously.
