Moral Myopia / Dragon Ball

Go To

  • Tenshinhan and the Crane Hermit swear revenge against Goku for killing Mercenary Tao, who happened to be the Crane Hermit's brother. Goku counters that Tao attacked him since he was sent to kill him and he only defended himself; neither one cares. Tien eventually grows past this when he realizes how vile Tao and the Crane Hermit are.
  • King Piccolo is furious that Goku killed his minions/children and personally confronts him over it, and yet he himself was indirectly responsible for the death of Goku's friend Krillin as well as countless other innocents.
  • King Piccolo's son Piccolo Jr is just as bad. He hates Goku and wants to kill him to avenge his father and take over the world. Goku killed his father because he coldly murdered a number of Goku's friends. Ironically, after Piccolo kills Goku in Dragon Ball Z the circumstances (Goku was holding down Raditz so Piccolo could shoot him) means he has no satisfaction with it and trains Goku's son Gohan out of his final request, causing his Heel–Face Turn. Piccolo is now one of the most moral characters.
  • The Z version of Bardock is furious that his crew is betrayed and murdered by Frieza's soldiers and goes on a rampage to avenge them. Although noble and understandable, Bardock and his crew are still hired murderers who regularly perform genocide.
  • Vegeta despises Frieza for destroying his planet and driving the Saiyan race to the brink of extinction. This is despite Vegeta being a planetary pirate who destroyed a number of species and murdered his own partner, Nappa, for getting injured and refused to even consider bring Raditz back because he considered him a weakling. Hell, Dende even told Vegeta that he and Freeza are both similar which is why he refused to help Vegeta.
  • When Android 19 and Dr. Gero/Android 20 show up they slaughter an entire city full of innocent people, with 19 beating a sick Goku and sucking the life out of him. Then Vegeta shows up and beats 19 so thoroughly that 19 tries to run for his life, after which Gero screams at him that it's enough; as Vegeta points out Gero and 19 had come to destroy the Z Fighters and it's only "enough" because Gero is losing.
    • Gero's entire grudge against Goku. He hates Goku because he destroyed the Red Ribbon Army. The same army that mercilessly murdered hundreds, including its own members, and Gero built them multiple killer robots for them to do just that all so Commander Red could use the Dragon Balls to make himself taller. Granted, no one knew about what Red really wanted to do with the Dragon Balls and later material specifies it was more because Dr. Gero's son Gevo was part of the army (and Android 16 was based on him); while understandable Gero's grudge is still incredibly myopic because his son fought in the Red Ribbons for a leader who didn't care and a cause that would have made the world a worse place.
  • Androids 17 and 18 from Future Trunks' timeline. This is best exemplified when Future Trunks, having become much stronger thanks to his experiences in the past effortlessly kicks their asses and kills 18, 17 furiously calling him out despite the fact that both 17 and 18 had spent twenty years rampaging across the Earth killing whoever and whenever they wanted For the Evulz. Trunks even calls 17 out on this before killing him as well.
Trunks: You think this life is all about you, don't you? What about the others? The ones that you two killed?!
  • Babidi wants to kill the Supreme Kai because he killed his father Bibidi to stop Majin Buu's rampage. Bibidi caused the death of millions if not billions by unleashing Buu, including most of the Kais. Babidi also regularly murders others, including his own subordinates without care. Piccolo calls him out on it after cutting him in half and Babidi has the gall to beg for help.
Piccolo: When you help others, you receive help. When's the last time you used your powers to help someone? I'll bet it's been a while, hasn't it?
    Babidi: Help! Don't lecture me!
Piccolo: You don't like being hurt, do you? But you delight in hurting others. You're right. You don't need a lecture. You need to be exterminated.
  • Beerus hates when others don't show him proper respect since he's a god. However, don't expect him to show any respect for others, even the Kais who are supposed to be his equals and counterparts. Or his mentor and teacher Whis.
  • Zamasu hates all forms of mortal life, viewing them as brutal, selfish beings that abuse their god-given gifts to commit atrocities and kill each other but he himself commits similar acts throughout the Future Trunks Saga. Present Zamasu is perfectly willing to kill his own master to advance his goals (and in the timeline where Goku Black hails, he succeeded), Goku Black's first act upon stealing Goku's body was to murder Goku and his entire family purely out of spite for Goku beating him in their sparring match, and Future Zamasu uses his god-given gifts to slaughter entire planets, as well as his fellow gods, without a flicker of remorse. When Future Zamasu and Goku Black fuse Merged Zamasu even invokes this trope in regards to Goku and Vegeta fusing into Vegito, stating that "what becomes good when done by gods becomes evil when done by mortals... and becomes sin."
  • Baby wants revenge against the Saiyans for killing the Tuffles. To achieve that he enslaves everyone on Earth, which had absolutely nothing to do with the Saiyan-Tuffle conflict, and attacks Goku and his family who were born after the war. When Pan points out that the Saiyans who murdered his race are long dead, Baby tells her he doesn't care. Goku also brings this up to Baby, but is met with the same response.
    • Dr. Lychee and Hatchiyack share Baby's motivations but also involve Earth in the crossfire and refuse to back down when confronted.
  • Both versions of Paragus want revenge on Vegeta's father King Vegeta for messing with his son Broly but this grudge becomes irrelevant upon Planet Vegeta's destruction.
  • Frieza wants revenge on Goku for interfering with his plans despite being a brutal, fantastically racist tyrannical dictator whose family held Goku's species firmly in the grip of an oppressive regime, only for Frieza to destroy most of them anyway despite their servitude.
    • Also, in the climax of his fight with Goku, he had the gall to beg for mercy when he ended up cutting himself in half with his own attack, to which Goku angrily reminds him that many innocent people begged him to spare them and he showed no mercy whatsoever towards them.
    • Frieza's brother Cooler and father King Cold both desired revenge for Frieza's first loss despite being just as guilty as him. Cooler at least didn't care so much about Frieza himself, with some dubs suggesting he would have killed Frieza himself if given a choice, as what his defeat represented, that being a stain on their family's name as the most powerful force in the universe.
  • Raditz himself is the earliest example in Z. He reunites with his long-lost younger brother Goku, just so he can recruit him as a Space Pirate, but as an All-Loving Hero, Goku naturally refuses. So Raditz resorts to kidnapping Goku’s son, Gohan, and threatens (depending on translation) to kill Gohan unless Goku slays 100 earthlings in a day, or he’ll raise Gohan as a “proper” Saiyan warrior. End result is a battle to the death between the two brothers, with Piccolo pulling an Enemy Mine with Goku. Once Raditz is at Goku’s mercy, he pathetically pleads to be let off the hook, even having the audacity to try to guilt-trip Goku over trying to kill his only brother. Goku points out that anyone as cruel as Raditz doesn’t deserve such recognition since he tried to kill him and Gohan first.
