Pim: I love memes, Charlie! I LOVE MEEEMES!
Charlie: Uh, Pim, I would not be screaming that at the top of your lungs.
These memes are guaranteed to cheer you up. Unless, you know, they can't for some reason
Please add entries in the following format if possible:
- The meme. [[labelnote:Explanation]]The explanation behind the meme, if necessary.[[/labelnote]] ExplanationLike this.
- Further mutations and successor memes, if any.
- "Is this supposed to make me not want to kill myself?"ExplanationA question uttered by Desmond, the Smiling Friends' suicidal client in the first episode, after witnessing the chaos that is Pim's family. Typically, it is used as a reaction to a disappointing or overrated outcome.
- "I just wanted my cheese!"ExplanationDuring the pilot, Alan's B story is about him trying to find his missing piece of cheese. He says the aforementioned line after being crucified by the Bliblies who stole the cheese. It's actually becoming something of a Discredited Meme, with people comparing it to the similarly-discredited Szecuan sauce meme from Rick and Morty.
- "It's no Big Mouth".ExplanationA quote from a rather divisive negative review of Smiling Friends, one that many readers saw as an Insult Backfire.
- "Look Pim, I know it's our job to help this guy and everything, but I think this guy's a lost cause. He's obviously made up his mind; why don't we just cut our losses and get out of here?"ExplanationA line from the first episode where Charlie tries to talk Pim out of helping Desmond due to the obvious evidence he's ready to end it all. It ended up becoming a trend on Twitter to photoshop the still of Charlie and Pim from that scene over people and characters in Desmond's place. Especially those describing Shinji Ikari, such as this particular scene. Someone even made a crossover meme with MordeTwi
- "How do I look yellow man?"ExplanationIn Shrimp’s Odyssey, Charlie takes the titular client to a clothing store in an effort to improve Shrimp’s image so he can find a new girlfriend. From off-screen Shrimp asks Charlie how he looks, and the scene cuts to a much more detailed and realistic shot of him in the clothes Charlie gave him to try on, and fans started swapping either some, or all parts of the outfit for the reveal shot to things such as a cat maid outfit, having Shrimp wear Supreme brand clothes, etc.
- ”You kiss your dad on the mouth?” Explanation A frame of the scene where Charlie reacts confused about Pim stating that he kisses his dad in the mouth. This scene has spiraled into a reaction meme to reply to an idiotic statement.
- “This is the most obnoxious thing I’ve ever experienced in my life.” Explanation Originally a scene where Charlie says this in response to the witch stealing his hat and then trying to get him and Pim into a game of guessing which of her hands has the hat, Charlie’s dialogue has spiraled into a reaction meme where he says this in response to something the viewer dislikes immensely or cringes at (such as Charlie reacting to Logan Paul’s apology video after the Suicide Forest incident)
- "And this is Jeremy, your only form of hellish entertainment!” Explanation Jeremy’s method of "entertaining" Charlie by spastically waving his fingers in Charlie’s face while screaming gibberish (and later getting the wind knocked out of himself by Charlie for doing so a second time after being warned not to), has lead to people replacing different characters in the scene, such as Charlie with Pibby, Jeremy with Morty’s head, replacing Jeremy with Jerma, or just adding to the madness by multiplying Jeremy.
- "Pim, can we watch something else?"ExplanationThe opening line from the first episode, where Pim and Charlie are watching the dancing alien on TV. People have begun replacing the dancing alien with other videos, usually ones that are somewhat controversial.
- The Mr. Frog Show reviews Explanation The Mr. Frog Show is a fictional program starring the titular celebrity, which despite using an absurdly barebones formula for every episode (Mr. Frog runs up to the camera, introduces himself and the show, eats a bug, then proclaims it to be the end, roll credits) somehow became a popular Long Runner with an huge fanbase in-universe. Out of universe, viewers like to run with the joke by pretending to be long-time fans of The Mr. Frog Show, doing everything from calling the program a masterpiece, praising the writing and performance of its "episodes", sharing memories of their favorite moments, criticizing its Audience-Alienating Era, expressing confusion about a Bizarro Episode, ect. All with playful irony.
- "Dude, I just looked it up, that's true. That's like 100%. Everything he said is true."ExplanationThe scene where Gnarly explains the problem of the helium shortage, followed by Charlie confirming it after looking it up on his phone, has become a popular format for people to voice their opinions.
- "Relax, man. I was just going to shoot you in the head and kill you."ExplanationThe scene where the Boss points a gun at Grim after the latter gives a nihilistic speech, has become a popular format for people to refute online nihilists.
- The Forest Demon, as it turns out, has a near-identical design to the Cemetery Shade bosses in Elden Ring which was released just a month after his debut episode aired, inspiring memes.
- "Hello, but I'm not sorry." ExplanationMr. Frog's reply to Pim suggesting for him to apologize for putting the TMZ reporter in his mouth, which has become a popular reaction gif both by and as a response to unapologetics.
- On the topic of Mr. Frog, comparing him to real life controversial celebrities such as Ezra Miller or Kanye West is also popular in the fandom.
- "It's MY IP to sit on and do nothing with!" ExplanationFrom "Gwimbly: Definitive Remastered Enhanced Extended Edition DX 4K (Anniversary Director’s Cut)", the scene where Pim and Alan drags Gwimbly out of the CEO's office after declaring he'll make his own indie title had the CEO say this in response once they leave. This immediately resonated with many fans of Cult Classics who are tired of seeing games go unappreciated or screwed over by their rights holders.
- I might get you to [X], if you kiss my nugget.Explanation Another line of IGBG's CEO, where he is offering Gwimbly a nugget in exchange of him becomming a skin in Troglor's game. It is often used to represent a brand only getting a small reference in something else.
- “Hey Boys? Guess who just got a call to make the president smile?”Explanation A scene from the start of "Mr. President" where Charlie tells Pim, Allan and Glep that he doesn't get involved with politics, only for Mr. Boss to enter the break room and say the above line, causing Charlie to scream in frustration. Many fans have replaced Charlie’s scream with different sounds.
- Smiling Friends Crossover Fanart.ExplanationSmiling Friends has become a source of templated for fanartists to make fanart of characters from other media to fit the unique shape of the Smiling Friends. Examples of it includes them as central characters of Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, Fear and Hunger, Chainsaw Man, and Saw
- "Dude, check the news. It doesn't matter what channel."ExplanationA scene from "Mr. President" where, after President Jimble accidentally crashes the global economy, Charlie tells Pim to turn on a TV, where he sees Times Square in utter chaos. Fans have taken to editing the footage Pim sees to other disastrous events like the Third Impact, Eggman's announcement, and "THEY HIT THE FUCKING PENTAGON", amongst others.
- Following Gwimbly's debut in the Season 2 premiere, many fans began pretending that Gwimbly was a beloved underused platforming character from the 90s in real life, akin to other similar neglected video game mascots like Rayman or Banjo-Kazooie. Fans have even created fake promos or footage from Gwimbly's games, ala Graggle Simpson of The Simpsons memes fame.
- “I was just wondering if you wanted to HANG out with me, and smoke weed, and fill our bellies with DIET soda and play Burnout Revenge for the PS2…”ExplanationAllan’s landlord’s request in “A Allan Adventure”, which ends up causing most of the plot, quickly caught on after the episode’s airdate, with many alterations replacing the above game with other PS2 titles or any video game at all. Helped by Zach’s unhinged delivery of the above line.
- "No, this can't be! I-I must be dreaming!"ExplanationIn "A Allan Adventure", when Allan suggests to Pilford that he use his nose to fix electronics in place of paperclips, Pilford is amazed to find out it actually works and gives Allan the paperclips for free. Since the episode, the scene has been used often to depict moments where something someone's trying for the first time goes better than expected. It's also been used to depict fans being hyped for long-awaited works that were previously thought to be pipe dreams.
