The City is such an over the top and ball-bustingly horrible place, that any discussion about what's going on is inevitably going to degenerate into memes.

Sinners
- Fire Rabbit Ryōshū ExplanationA term used to describe Ryōshū with the Fourth Match Flame E.G.O which is the last milestone reward for Limbus Company's pre-registration. Copypastas followed that have encouraged others to subscribe to Project Moon's channel and follow the Limbus Company Twitter.
- Baby Dante. ExplanationOne of the images posted on the offical Twitter account features a babified version of Dante, complete with replacing their head with a cuckoo clock using Punishing Bird as the bird. Fanart immediately ensued.
- Gregnant copypasta. Explanation A Reddit user infamously commented on how cockroaches give birth and mentioning that they would love to hold Gregor when he gives birth too. The comment soon took off, rising in popularity due to its sheer insane nature.
- PregorExplanationA shortened name for "Pirate Gregor", itself a Fan Nickname players commonly use for [Twinhooks Pirate First Mate] Gregor, that has the unfortunate coincidence of sounding exactly like the portmanteau between "pregnant" and "Gregor", adding more popularity to the Mister Seahorse Gregor memes.
- Bride GregorExplanation The Gregmant meme spiked in use when the Garden of Thorns E.G.O. came out. While the Garden of Thorns E.G.O. is meant to be Gregor doing his best Jesus impression, the white robe and rose motifs make it look more like a wedding dress to some, prompting jokes that the fans can finally marry Gregor. It sharing a color scheme with Ozma's E.G.O. from Library of Ruina doesn't help, either, and it is released on White Day, out of all days.
- Mandatory reading! Explanation A common joke that, in order to understand the story better, everyone who plays the game must read every single book the Sinners are based off of.
- LIMBUS COMPANY! Explanation Don Quixote's impassioned shout of the game's title is commonly brought up in the game's fandom, both due to her general popularity and for scaring the crap out of people starting the game with their volume too high.
- MANAGER-ESQUIRE!!!!! TO WHERE IN THE WORLD HAST THOU DISAPPEARED!!!!!!!!!!! Explanation Following from her Title Scream, Don Quixote's idle voiceline sees her absolutely screaming her head off wondering where you went. While all other sinners will make comments upon being left idle, Don Quixote is notable for being the single only sinner who shouts out, leaving many unsuspecting players startled.
- The Mind Whip Menace ExplanationR Corp. Reindeer Ishmael's 3rd skill, Mind Whip, has become memetic amongst the community due to the fact that if she has less than 10 Charge when using it, it will target a random character - including your own Sinners - in a one-sided attack. Because of its four coins and high coin power, it will always be chosen by the auto-battle mechanic, often resulting in that high damage causing the staggering or outright death of one of your own Sinners.
- "Luck correlates with skill". ExplanationTingtang Gangleader Hong Lu's line after a successful event skill check, which started being used sarcastically for bad gacha rolls or losing clashes/events due to bad coin flips.
- Did you see, Dante? Explanation Another line from Tingtang Hong Lu, heard when he staggers an enemy. Due to his absurdly high coin power on his third skill and his 3 coin skill 2, Hong Lu had a favorable chance at staggering if not outright killing his opponents, meaning players heard this line a lot during the early months of the game, and still to this day in the first three Cantos.
- What's Meursault doing? ExplanationOne of Meursault's chat lines for his N Corp. Identity involves him excusing himself as a situation has arisen that needs him to be gripped. The poor wording of this immediately gave people that impression that he was masturbating.
- Mr. Salt ExplanationA wordplay on Mersault's name, commonly used by fans as a nickname for the former.
- Meursault Jail ExplanationMeursault's base E.G.O, Chains of Others, involves him wrapping an enemy up in chains and hitting them with a debilitating 5 Bind and 4 Attack Power Down on the next turn, resulting in almost any enemy becoming completely incapacitated on the next turn, spawning a number of memes where Meursault uses his E.G.O on the enemy while the rest of the team uses the opportunity to gang up on them.
- "The odyssey had a purpose". ExplanationOutis' Base E.G.O Skill, To Pathos Mathos, has her saying that phrase in the accompanying cutscene. Given that said E.G.O is one of the cheapest to activate, requiring only 2 sloth and 2 pride sins (base sinner Outis by herself is able to fully fuel it), expect to hear her say that a lot.
- Outism ExplanationThe fandom-given name for the condition of simping for Outis. The term itself was popularized by a youtube video under the same name, the youtuber even having an entire playlist dedicated to similar Outis-simping videos. Unfortunately the entire playlist has long been taken down, but a reuploaded version of the first video can be found here.
- N Corp. Rodion's face. ExplanationN Corp. Rodion's base art, which features her with Exhausted Eye Bags and a dopey smile, led to numerous jokes of her face resembling someone reheating a late night snack while staring into the microwave, resulting in memes and art of the scenario.
- NEET Faust Explanation The One Who Grips Faust's base art shows her hunched over on a computer with wild, messy hair, tired bags and a manic look on her face, which quickly became meme-worthy and drawn jokes of her being a classic NEET.
- Bullying Sinclair ExplanationThe irony of Sinclair working alongside Nagel und Hammer versions of his fellow Sinners was not lost on players, who quickly took to cracking jokes about them freaking him out or harassing him, especially when Faust's turned out to be the Alternate Timeline counterpart of Kromer, and just as obsessed with him to boot. Come Hell's Chicken, and Sinclair being forced into a team of women who bossed him around inspired further jokes.
- Fishmael ExplanationA wordplay on Ishmael's name, also commonly used by fans as a nickname for the former.
- Women want me fish fear me ExplanationDue to Ishmael's past of working on a ship as a whale hunter she has been drawn dressed in fishing gear, a hat that said "Women want me fish fear me" and a shirt that said "MILF, Man I Love Fishing."
- Liu's Blowjob Brothers ExplanationWhen Hong Lu's Liu Association ID first released, players took note of how all the Liu Association IDs at that point were male 00s, prompting the nickname of "Blowjob Brothers" (based on this tweet which became memetic in 2023) for the whole group. This name would stick even when Ishmael's Liu Association ID arrived as both a female Sinner and a 000, and fans count her as one of the group regardless.
- The Scissor Sisters Explanation With the release of Liu Section 4 Ryoshu and Section 4 Director Rodion, people began to joke about the Liu creating a new division of the Blowjob Brothers titled this. What aids in the meme is the women are all in Section 4, while the men are divided among Section 5 and 6 (Hong lu in S5, and Meursault/Gregor is S6).
- Thiccmael/Slimemael ExplanationAnother wordplay on Ishmael's name spun from the reveal of her Lobotomy Identity which uses an E.G.O. called Sloshing, whose armor is a thick plated outfit constantly covered in goo.
- Wageslave MeursaultExplanationRosespanner Workshop Meursault is shown to be chronically overworked, with visible eyebags from how exhausted he is, and a passive that heals him when he's Staggered because that's the only time he gets to take a break. What makes this even more memetic is out of all his other identities, from being apart of the Warp Cleanup crew to being a general in a corporate-backed fanatical cult, the ID that has his him working a desk job is the most ragged we've ever seen the man.
- Chainsaw ManExplanationRosespanner Workshop Gregor's chainsaw arm and disheveled appearance led to various edits of him as Denji.
- Dante can't swear Explanation Many have noticed that Dante has a bit of a Gosh Darn It to Heck! habit when they're frustrated, such as them saying "Screw yourself" instead of "Go fuck yourself" at the end of Canto IV. This has lead to half-joking theories that their clock head comes with a built in swear filter.
- Shuckaroonies! ExplanationProbably the most infamous example of the above, found in the minisode between Canto III.5 and IV.
- Letting Meursault on the beach. Explanation With the reveal that Canto 4.5 would seemingly feature Limbus Company travelling to the beach, many fans who were familiar with Meursault's literary origin, The Stranger, immediately began cracking jokes about Meursault due to the Meursault of the book shooting and killing a man on a beach, either claiming to dread what he would do in the event or joking that he would soon recieve a gun-using Identity.
- Ball Meursault Explanation When R. Corp Rhino Meursault was revealed, people noted how round he was in comparison to the Rhinos in the prior game, spawning fanart depicting him in extremely circular armor, as well as rolling.
- BEACH VORREYBURR ExplanationWhile not the first time Don Quixote pronounced a loanword in a funny way, this instance from the S.E.A. event caught people's attention for being especially gratuitous.
- Meursault at the club. Explanation (Canto V spoilers)Earlier in the Chapter when the gang needs to break into a club in order to find the boss of the Twin Hooks Pirates, it's brought up that Dante has no idea how club works, nor how to get inside. Upon asking the sinners who would be familiar with a club environment and how to get in, Meursault of all people speak up, saying he's been to one in an attempt to find happiness. Fans immediately zeroed in on the comment, with memes and renditions of what it would be like if Meursault was in a club.
- Ishmael PointingExplanation (Canto 5 Spoilers)The end credits card for Canto 5 features Ishmael looking and pointing at the viewer whilst giving off a toothy smile, becoming ripe for various memes involving pointing at the viewer in general.
- Keyblade Wielder Hong Lu ExplanationHong Lu's Dieci identity prominently features him smacking enemies with a giant key, leading to obvious comparisons.
- "Dost thou know?" ExplanationDuring the Miracle in District 20 christmas event, Don Quixote asks both Dante and Heathcliff if they knew about the legend of the Red Sack, prefacing with the question "dost thou know". Fans instantly exploded at the line, prompting edits of the "do they know?" meme with Donqui saying it in her own wording.
- Captain Ishmael can do everything! Explanation (Canto V spoilers) With the reveal of Ishmael's Captain Ahab identity, fans were excited to see what she would be able to do. Once the official Limbus twitter account posted her kit teaser, fans found out that she can do everything. She can: Inflict burn, inflict bleed, apply defense power up, apply protection, apply attack power up, apply damage up, apply aggro, apply pride power up, apply pierce power up, apply poise and poise count, gain poise and poise count on kill, heal ally SP, gain coin power, and even activate her own version of Assist Attack. To say that her kit is a mouthful would be an understatement.
- Meursans ExplanationAfter it was revealed that Meursault will have a Bamboo-Hatted Kim Identity, it was noted that this version Meursault has a single bright blue eye that glows while he's in battle, much like Sans.
- Bamboo Hatted-Kim but Motivated Explanation Blade Lineage Mentor Meursault's "To Claim Their Bones" skill is extremely flashy and frequently reaches extremely high damage thresholds with proper support in Mirror Dungeons, even after having been nerfed twice. To this end, fans have started comparing Mentor Meursault to Vergil from Devil May Cry with a number of Gameplay and Promo edits set to "Bury The Light"
- "The Manager ordered me to win, so I did." ExplanationTo Claim Their Bones is one of the hardest-hitting skills in the entire game and benefits heavily from Mirror Dungeon buffs, and in particular has the potential to obliterate many tough bosses and their minions in a single use. Given memes about Meursault being Literal-Minded already existed, this is often described as the result when Dante tells Meursault to win a fight.
- Kurokumo Ishmael and Heathcliff. Explanation With the addition of Faust, Don and Meursault to the Blade Lineage and Gregor to the Kurokumo clan, players deduced that the only Sinners who weren't allocated to any - Ishmael and Heathcliff - would be part of the Kurokumo clan, since this way, both camps would have an equal spread of 6 to form a team of 6.
- JoyousExplanationOriginally refers to an image of Yi Sang in a Propeller Hatof Whimsy holding a rainbow swirl lollipop but expanded to include other characters
- Heathcliff is a Furry. Explanation Given how Heathcliif has the Sunshower ID, a Telepole EGO, and is also associated with a wolf, people have begun to joke about him being a Furry.
- Heathcliff got that DWAG in him Explanation (MAJOR Canto VI Spoilers) A common reaction to how Distorted Heathcliff is a wolf.
- Heathcliff, the Black Slience/ "Boohoo, my wife is dead". Explanation (Canto VI Spoilers, MAJOR Library of Ruina Spoilers) Many made comparisons to the fact that Heathcliff has some similarities to Roland from the previous game, mostly about having a dead lover and revenge. This was made worse with Part 2, with Heathcliff doing a massive beatdown that people compared to Furioso.
- Dead wife club. Explanation (Canto V and VI Spoilers, MAJOR Library of Ruina Spoilers) Many have noted that at this point, there's so many dead love interests (implied or otherwise) in the City for them to start their own club. Cue jokes about Carmen, Queequeg, Angelica, and Cathy hanging out in some kind of Afterlife Antechamber.
- Potential Man. Explanation (Canto VI Spoilers) Sunshower E.G.O. Heathcliff has always been the hot debate ever since his release about how good or bad he is as a unit. Generally, the popular opinion boils down to "he would be good or even great if he was just fine-tuned a little more", due to having all the right tools to be a good unit, but missing something invaluable (like Nclair's guaranteed SP loss on skill usage) to push him just into the edge of being good. Come Canto VI, Heathcliff and all Heathcliff IDs gain the Bereavement debuff during levels which makes him lose -10 SP a turn until he reaches -20; additionally, he gains 3 power up while at negative sanity. This debuff has essentially given Sunshower Heathcliff that final push, making the meme and variations of it explode in popularity.
- Everyone's dead lover, Heathcliff. Explanation (Canto 4/ 5 spoilers) It was not lost on fans that Heathcliff has begun to rack up a closet of IDs that are based on other sinners' loved ones. First was Sunshower E.G.O. Heathcliff for Yi Sang, who is based on Dongbaek's first fight in Canto IV. And then we got Pequod Harpooner Heathcliff for Ishmael, who's based on Queequeg from Canto V. Some people in the fandom have began to notice the trend, spawning memes about Heathcliff being everyone's lover in other worlds, or reversing it and speculating who would get a Catherine-based identity.
- It’s over for Don. Explanation With the reveal that Canto VII will focus on Don Quixote, many took notice of said Canto being named ‘The Dream Ending’ and began to fear the worst for the plucky Sinner due to the ominous name and how it relates to the original Don Quixote story’s ending.
- My days art numbered! Explanation Another similar meme to the above, that features a downncast Don with this text on it. Often used as a reaction image.
- Streamer Faust / Faustcord Explanation A recurring Faust fan theory is that she can speak with other Faust IDs, and that might be the reason she "knows all outcomes". Fans like to depict this theory in a humorous light by showcasing Faust as a streamer of the events she and the other sinners go through with the other Faust IDs as her stream chat, or a Faust Discord server (Faustcord) in which they chat with one another.
- Faust's Jerma ID/ Jerma Faust Explanation Some fans have taken the theory and run wild with it, depicting Faust interacting with her other Faust IDs in the same way Jerma interacts with his twitch chat. Made even more humorous when taken into account that, technically speaking, Faust has fed multiple people to a sort-of meat grinder before.
- "This truly was our Limbus Company"ExplanationFollowing the feel-good endings of Cantos IV and V, fans began joking about how Heathcliff would end Canto VI giving a Narmy speech about The Power of Friendship with a Title Drop included while the Sinners (and specifically Vergilius) cheer him on, before having a special cutscene of him beating the Arc Villain to death with Bodysack over a Mili song.
- HOPE ExplanationOne part of the greentext that popularized the meme was a prediction that Heathcliff would deflect back a ball of energy fired by the Climax Boss, complete with the "REVENGE" on his bat changing to the word "HOPE" along with the bat turning from dark metal to gold. Edits of Heathcliff's base sprite with this exact change started popping up in the weeks leading up to the finale of Canto VI. Hilarious in Hindsight when, come Walpurgis Night, it turns out Heathcliff had scraped "REMEMBER" into his bat instead.
- Support Explanation Unlike every other base Sinner, Don Quixote's base support passive is simply called...Support. This, alongside Don's default expression has made it very comedic.
- The Sakuya ID Explanation [Edgar Family Chief Butler] Ryoshu's Skill 2 is an attack that throws knife volleys across a large area... this attacking style is... eerily similar to the way Touhou Project's Sakuya Izayoi fights. This, plus the added effect both Sakuya and Ryoshu's Maid ID focus heavily on Outspeeding opponents only added fuel to the fire for comparisons between the two Maids.
- Whatever happened to butler Sinclair? Explanation Wuthering Heights Butler Faust first premiered in the post-uptie artwork for Butler Outis, which then would later go on to become an identity. In Butler Faust's post-uptie are, we catch a glimpse of Butler Sinclair, and he even has dialogue in her uptie story. People thought Sinclair would follow the trend, however as time went on, with maid Ishmael releasing alongside maid Ryoshu and no peep about the Sinclair identity, fans began to wonder what happened to him. Only further egged on by the fact that Sinclair got a Philip ID for Walpurgis Night, as a sinner will only really recieve one identity per season, if any at all.
- Sinclairdev ExplanationA nickname for a joking theory that there is a specific developer over at Project Moon that loves Sinclair and gives him preferential treatment due to its extremely strong Identities like The One Who Shall Grip and Cinq Director. Gained even more traction when the anticipated Dawn Office Fixer Sinclair was announced he'd be buffed twice in a single day.
Other Characters
- Danteh... ExplanationVergilius tone of voice and pronunciation of Dante became very memorable.
- Vergilius, our waifu ExplanationThe 2023 April Fools story has him standing in for each gacha game's poster girls: namely Arona from Blue Archive, Amiya from Arknights and becoming an actual horse to stand in for Mejiro Mcqueen from Uma Musume.
- [[KROMER]] ExplanationChapter 3 introduces Kromer, a major antagonist based on a character of the same name from Demian. Coincidentally, the word "Kromer" was also used by the extremely memetic Spamton G. Spamton as a synonym for money. Naturally, many jokes ensued about this.
- Just like W Corp. from the previous game, any mentions of N Corp. is going to degenerate into ridicule and jokes and it's impossible to discuss the situation seriously. note N Corp. is infamous as some of the more volatile and bizarre Wings just like its predecessor W Corp. is, to the point that they're Hate Sinks amongst a group of more-or-less bizarre institutions. In their case, not only does the prequel reveal that they're behind murdering people for seemingly petty and eccentric Taboos (such as filming on the streets), this game reveals that they also have a specialized group of employees in inquisitor outfits going around hunting, killing and torturing people with prosthetics, which is as ridiculous as it sounds. Sinner or not, their cult-like structure, complete with sermons and rituals means that they can easily be mistaken for a Syndicate and not a legitimate Wing, and discussions of any N Corp Sinner identity are going to degenerate into memes like the Love Town trains would.
- Kromer NTR. ExplanationIn Chapter 3, Kromer sees a vision of an alternate universe where Sinclair joins Nagel und Hammer together with her, this vision would later become Sinclair's N Corp identity....except said identity depicts Faust in place of Kromer instead. The fandom jokes that Faust has 'stolen' Sinclair away from Kromer who had been chasing him all this time, referred to as 'Netorare' or "NTR". This meme usually depicts Kromer in distraught emotions at the sight of Sinclair with Faust.
- Became a bit of an Ascended Meme when The One Who Shall Grip Sinclair actually released - in the max Uptie cutscene, The One Who Grips Faust muses over how she succeeded in molding him to her will and that someone in another alternate universe is likely very jealous. Not only that: if you bring him in the story fight against Kromer, she has a unique line and staggers in the first turn out of shock.
- Demian NTR. ExplanationSimilar to the above meme, when the art showed that N Corp Sinclair had an incomplete Mark of Cain on his forehead, people also began to joke that this version of Sinclair was 'stolen' not just from Kromer, but also from Demian.
- Faust NTR Explanation like the above meme jokes/entire comic strips have been made of N corp Don stealing Sinclair from Faust and Kromer.
- Metal Gear Limbus ExplanationDongbaek's white hair and black fabric eyepatch make her closely resemble Raiden from Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, with many jokes being made about her appearance after a preview for Season 2 showed her.
- Samjo's a clerk. Explanation (Spoiler)In Canto IV Part 2, Samjo's death via jumping into a pool of regeneration fluid just to protect the honor of K Corp. has made some people liken him to the clerks from Lobotomy Corporation, which are often considered Too Dumb to Live.
- Limbus Company promotes Women's Wrongs ExplanationA play on word with 'women's rights', used whenever a morally dubious or downright evil female character is introduced - such as Hermann, Kromer or Alfonso. Especially when Evil Is Cool is at play
- Carmen cannot legally Distort you without your consentExplanation (Canto 4 Spoilers!)At the finale of Canto IV, Dongrang initially becomes a Distortion, before managing to reverse said Distortion and manifest his own personal E.G.O.. Given that manifesting a personal E.G.O. necessitates being able to resist The Voice, the implication that Dongrang was able to reject succumbing to The Voice after he succumbed to it lead to jokes and memes over how he essentially didn't give The Voice consent to Distorting him.
- DO YOU LOVE THE CITY YOU LIVE IN? Note I LOVE THE CITY I LIVE IN! Explanation A sentence originally used by the abnormalities 'You must be happy' / 'Have you become strong?' and intended to be answered with a yes or no prompt ingame, it now serves as a reaction whenever something very positive or very negative happens regarding Project Moon and Limbus Company.
- The Farmwatch Identity Explanation (Canto 4 Spoilers!)During the last few weeks of Season 2, memes have started to pop up from fans begging for Project Moon to release an Identity based on the E.G.O. of Canto 4's final boss, the desperation from the fans intensifying with more and more signs of Project Moon not listening to their pleas, most glaringly with how the Identity announcements after the Walpurgis Night event only provided a W Corp Identity for Yi Sang, someone who also already got an Identity based on Canto 4 (which is his Spicebush E.G.O.). However, what complicates matters is that 1. the character from whom Farmwatch originates, Dongrang, is based on a historial figure widely known as a traitor to the Korean people and 2. the latter half of Season 2's runtime was already overshadowed by the Vellmori controversy, so Project Moon may not have wanted to add even more backlash on top of it.
- Farmwatch OutisExplanationA subset of the memes focus on demanding that Outis is the one that gets the Farmwatch identity, if only because she's the most Identity-deprived of all the Sinners, only having two 00 and two 000 identities in total by the end of Season 2.
- Head Hooligan/Nah, I'd WinExplanationRight around the time of the "Nah, I'd Win" meme's spread, fans have applied it to the Head Hooligan, a King Mook of what's the first and weakest enemies of the game that're the Hooligans, portraying him as a Memetic Badass.
- MY HAIR COUPOOOOONS! ExplanationThe fight against the Big Brother of the Middle Finger, Ricardo, is entirely predicated on the fact that Heathcliff stole some hair salon coupons from Ricardo's safe earlier in the chapter, leading to the humorous fact that entire reason this agent of a Finger is chasing you is because he takes his hair care very seriously. It's also the name of the attack he'll spam to wipe your entire team off the face of the map if you take too long on his fight, cementing him as the single strongest opponent the Sinners have fought so far.
- Doomed sea yuri. Explanation (Canto V spoilers)In the second release of the 3-part drop of Canto V, Ishmael mentions to Smee that she "knew Queequeg" before a fight between the groups broke out. Fans who had read or were familiar with Moby Dick picked up on the comment instantaneously, hoping that the aformentioned Queequeg would turn out to be a woman, perfectly mirroring the dynamic of book Ishmael and Queequeg. Lo and behold, the release that gave us the Canto V dungeon revealed that Queequeg was indeed a woman; and going further, Project Moon did not skimp out on the romantic subtext that the original Moby Dick had either. Fans were equal parts delighted and frightened, knowing just what was in store for the two star-crossed lovers.
- "ONCE AGAIN, THE FAULT LIES WITH YOU, ISHMAEL!"Explanation (Canto 5 Spoilers)Captain Ahab's rant in trying to gaslight a guilty Ishmael into believing that she's at fault for the disasters of the Pequod gets quoted and memed a lot as a result of just how insane she sounds when yelling about it. The memes involving this quote would "blame" Ishmael for all sorts of things, even minor or borderline nonsensical "felonies".
- You, solely, are responsible for this. Explanation (Canto 5 Spoilers)The quote itself drew similarities to Project Wingman's Crimson 1, another main antagonist infamous for his final fight and monologues essentially being a nonstop spiel of projection and gaslighting towards Monarch in order to guilt-trip them.
- Both of these became an Ascended Meme with the reveal that Ishmael gets an identity based on Captain Ahab, and not only says the exact line (except to Dante) when failing a check, but also lets you set it as your Manager profile's intro.
- "THE FAULT LIES WITH YOU, HEATHCLIFF!" ExplanationPeople were quick to meme on the fact that one of the character's shown in the canto 6 trailer looked a lot like Ahab with their long hair. The meme ended up staying around past that, since Jopsehine has long black-and-grey hair, often blaming Heathcliff for Wuthering Hights (the manner) having been sulled.
- "Ahab did you fuck my mom???" Explanation (Canto 5 Spoiler)The Stinger for Canto 5 lead to some people jokingly shipping Ahab with Hermann, which in turn made people wonder about Gregor's hypothetical reaction
- Gregor, Nelly is fucking your mom. Explanation (Canto 6 Spoiler) It also got spread to Nelly after her betrayal.
- Bamboo GOATED Kim (Explanation) The trailer for the ''Yield My Flesh to Claim Their Bones'' event gave fans a look at Bamboo-Hatted Kim, showing off both stunning gameplay of Kim himself and Meursault's new 000 identity based on Kim, displaying flashy and cool attacks to boot. Kim was somewhat of an Ensemble Dark Horse back in Library of Ruina due to his amazing synergy for slash decks, a wonderful Objet D'art page that stays usable even at endgame, and having one of the coolest, if not hardest attack to the meet the conditions for, To Claim Their Bones, all while being stuck as a general invitation with no proper story segments about Blade Lineage as a whole. Fans of Kim were elated to see him finally in the limelight of the attention, finally letting both old and new players see the full extent of how badass Bamboo-Hatted Kim can truly be.
- Linton is related to/an aberration of The Dream of A Black Swan. Explanation People pointed out how similar Linton looks to the Brothers associated with The Dream of A Black Swan in Lobotomy Corporation, and it quickly spiralled into chaos.
- The release of Canto VI Part 2 spawned many memes very quickly due to the revelations in it.
- MY FUCKING VIOLIN! Explanation (Canto VI Spoilers) Hindley's pitiful nature and his rant while distorting, that none of the events that Heathcliff had to deal with would have happened if he had gotten that violin was mentioned in the cutscene where Mr. Earnshaw brings Heathcliff home. While this is him projecting his insecurities by hiding it through something superficial, it has led to the fandom focusing solely on the violin on account of Hindley being extremely petty.
- THE FAULT LIES WITH ME, HEATHCLIFF!/ I hope I don't have to fight my evil shadow self today. Explanation (MAJOR Canto VI Spoilers) The reveal that "Matthew" was actually another Heathcliff from a mirror world who was as broken as Heathcliff from the book lead to mass joking around the fandom, with the former joke being the most popular.
- The Grand Return of The Voice/Carmen Explanation (MAJOR Canto VI Spoilers) Carmen wasn't really seen at all during Canto 5, the first 5.5, and failed to fully distort Aeng-du due to Merusault's intervention. So the fact that Carmen manages to distort not just Hindley, but also Heathcliff, which is a big deal due to him being one of the Sinners, meant the internet exploded after her seemingly mysterious absence and poor track record of distorting people earlier in the game.
- Anti-Meursault Shield Explanation (Canto VI Spoilers) When asked to knock out Hindley because he was distorting, Meursault states that he can not because there is another force pushing against him. Given the last time Carmen tired to distort someone while Meursault was there, many joke that she just put in this shield to stop Meursault, and Meursault alone.
- WHITE WOMAN JUMPSCARE Explanation (MAJOR Canto VI Spoilers) A reference to how in general infamous Carmen is in terms of haunting the plot, so to see actual artwork of her in-game is both a big deal and a big scare. Especially since when the CGs of her pop up during Canto VI they flash by so quickly a player might miss it, but the art may appear on your loading screen later on making it seem like she appeared in the CG list out of nowhere.
- Stop making people Furries, Carmen! Explanation (MAJOR Canto VI Spoilers) Hindley ends up distorting into a wolf-like monster, and not soon after Heathcliff has his mental breakdown, she compares him to a wolf, with later a howling noise being heard. Que the jokes. It doesn't help that people already joked about Heathcliff being a furry.
- Narrative Haunting Competition Explanation (MAJOR Canto VI Spoilers) People have begun joking about Carmen trying to take Cathy's place as the central Posthumous Character of the Canto, complete with the two fighting over the role.
- The Vergilius Apology Form Explanation (MAJOR Canto VI Spoilers) With the "Fraud-gilius" Fan-Nickname Vergilius gained by being the resident All-Powerful Bystander, it was refreshingly cathartic when Vergilius utterly trounces and trivializes the Wild Hunt encounter, showing the Sinners (And the Players) why he's a Color. Thus, people who called Vergilius a Fraud have subsequently started "Repenting" and filling out meme templates of what has subsequently been dubbed the "Red Gaze / Vergilius Apology Form".
- Who's Catherine? Explanation (MAJOR Canto VI Spoilers) At the end of Canto VI, Catherine willingly pulls off an Cessation of Existence on a multiversal scale, causing her to be Ret-Gone in every mirror world, including our own. This has caused fans to pretend she does not existi in the game in the first place whenever she is mentioned.
- "Cathy parody accounts have the chance to do something hilarious rn."
- It could be any one of us next! It could be me! It could be you! Explanation (MAJOR Canto VI Spoilers) There was a bit of debate about whether or not the Sinner's could distort, such to the point some believed that the end of Canto 6 Part 2 was a bait. Come part 3 and with Heathcliff distorting, all bets are off the table. People have made jokes about this, that any of the sinner's left could distort in their Canto.
Gameplay Memes
- "The real Difficulty Spike was playing on mobile."ExplanationDuring the initial launch of the game, many mobile players noted that their games would crash whenever they'd fight Abnormalities or use E.G.Os. Naturally, this spawned a number of jokes about Project Moon's tendency to include steep difficulty spikes.
- "45 SP" ExplanationA unit with a full 45 SP, by technicality, has an ~95% chance to flip heads on their coins. Naturally, many players can attest to that 5% to flip tails feeling much higher in practice, with many screenshots being posted of improbably bad luck when it comes to flipping heads at full sanity (including examples of 5-coin skills landing all tails), especially when a singular unlucky tail flip ends up costing the clash. The opposite is true for screenshots or recordings of enemies that are inexplicably flipping constant heads at 0 or even negative sanity, making it a common joke that the game is rigged, or that the actual gacha mechanic was trying to win clashes. This video accurately sums up the woes of the playerbase.
- Does anyone on this bus hit heads? ExplanationA meme not only lamenting the above, but questioning how the only units that seemingly always hit heads are minus-coin Identities like [The One Who Shall Grip] Sinclair and [Lobotomy E.G.O::Sunshower] Heathcliff...who lose power when rolling heads. Many a player has struggled with a Sinclair with sanity well into the negatives somehow landing multiple heads on Self-Destructive Purge and turning it from a One-Hit Kill to Scratch Damage, with it being joked that the game isn't rigged to flip tails as much as it to flip whatever result will inconvenience the player more.
- Does anyone on this bus win clashes? ExplanationAn extension of the above meme specifically reworded to address [Blade Lineage Mentor] Meursault, who has an inexplicably high tendency to win clashes with his third skill To Yield Their Flesh, whether from him high rolling or the enemy low rolling...except he needs to lose the clash in order to retaliate with the much stronger To Claim Their Bones, with the original skill being almost useless in comparison.
- I am no longer mentally ill. Explanation A version specifically aimed at Nclair. Due to being a negative coin ID you want Nclair as low SP as possible without hitting -45, but that can be difficult when the many different sanity mechanics kick in. It's not uncommon to find players struggling with a 45 SP Nclair flipping all heads and hitting zero coin power due to rolling heads, the one thing you don't want him doing. Due to his identity story essentially being him going through Sanity Slippage, fans have begun drawing him over the popular image of Mads Mikkelsen with the text "I am no longer mentally ill'. The meme was even slightly brought back when Sunshower Heathcliff was initially introduced.
- Discharge. ExplanationWith the release of Canto IV, the game's tagline system added the word "discharge", relating to the Shock Centipede's electrical discharge ability. Vulgar messages followed.
- Creamer. ExplanationAnd then came Seven Association Faust with the word "creamer", which, while originally referring to what she's putting in the tea she's serving in her Identity Story, quickly became an even bigger fodder for vulgar messages given other, less SFW meanings of the word "cream".
- "___. Knot tight." Explanation (Canto V Spoilers) The release of Heathcliff's Queequeg identity gave us the phrase "Rope. Knot tight." While it seems innocuous at first, Limbus fans who were familiar with Omegaverse or the furry fandom immediately picked up on how it could be turned into something NSFW, with the ability to put "<Character>. Knot tight."
- White Gossypium ExplanationWith the reveal of Refraction Railway 3, Mirrorclock Orangeroad, the teaser that was posted to the official account showed some new abnormalities to face, including the infamous Drenched Gossypium. Limbus twitter immediately exploded with both rejoicement of being able to finally get revenge on the abnormality, and hatred for all the times its White Gossypium E.G.O. gift appeared unwelcome in mirror dungeon runs. Even further adding to the meme was that the fight against Drenched Gossypium isn't nearly as difficult as some of the other fights in the same Railway, making bullying the poor flower even more sweet. This even reaches Ascended Meme status due to Heathcliff complaining about the E.G.O. gift in the Observation Logs.
- The Terrible Trio Explanation (Major Canto V Spoilers)The penultimate fight for Canto V's dungeon has you facing off against the remnants of the Pequod crew: Ahab, Queequeg, and Starbuck. Immediately upon release the fight was notable for being just short of impossible; Starbuck was a glass cannon that could instantly kill a Sinner in one move and launch unavoidable follow-ups with Ahab, Queequeg was nigh immortal with a built-in revive and uniquely resistant to pierce (while her fellow crewmates are weak to it instead), and Ahab was simply a menace who could redirect all attacks aimed at her to Queequeg (letting her spam one-sided attacks) and revive herself at half health. The fact that one is forced to start the fight at 0 SP and that Ahab can spit out many powerful SP buffs to herself and her allies that already roll high just contributes to the issue. There were many strategies involved in taking them down, ranging from systematically staggering Ahab so she couldn't dodge attacks, killing Starbuck immediately so he couldn't kill your sinners outright, to even simply brute forcing Ahab since she is the only one who needs to be defeated to technically win the fight. One thing everyone agreed on was certain; this fight was tough, and it was telling that when they returned as one of the later bosses of Refraction Railway 3, the trio was by far the biggest roadblock in the Railway, along with the buffed GasHarpoon fight right after.
- Made even more memetic when players realized that the actual ultimate fight of the Canto V dungeon, an EGO-wielding Ahab, was noticeably much easier due to the simple fact that you only fight Ahab and Ahab alone...except in the Refraction Railway where the gap is somewhat smaller.
- They do be Yapping Explanation People who played with [Pequod Captain] Ishmael quickly found that she talks... a LOT. Her dialogue responses to certain things like Staggering an Enemy or defeating an Enemy in Combat results in her going on long-winded speeches that frequently extend past the Turn End phase, and into the Player Phase. This interaction only extended Further when paired with [Lobotomy Corporation] Assistant Malkuth and [Lobotomy Corporation] AI Assistant Angela as Announcers for Combat Scenarios, with Malkuth being... well, Malkuth, and Angela's musings frequently being long-winded and over the top, and thus both of them will constsntly be overlapping with Pequod Ishmael's speeches as well. This in turn has created memes about these 3 in particular never being able to shut up.
- What do you MEAN they weren't fine-tuned!? Explanation Soon after the release of the Mirror of the Wuthering dungeon, players were met with rather difficult dungeon bosses, to the point a good few of them were outright unfair to fight. As it turns out this is because they took the abnormalities and bosses from the Refraction Railways and the like and simply... ported them over. No fine-tuning, no reworking, just took them and slapped them in the dungeon. They soon began working on a fix after players began to point this out.
- Write [Dumbass]. Explanation The update that added the Mirror of the Wuthering also made updates to old Abnormality events that allow you to initiate a fight with them for greater rewards. One of these is writing the word "Dumbass" to KQE-1J-23, and is seen as probably one of the funniest new choices in the game, especially since the Abnormality apparently takes enough offense to this that it instantly tries to kill you.
Miscellaneous
- Coulrophobia. ExplanationThe game's first trailer features a trigger warning about its intended contents, one of which is "reference to clowns (coulrophobia)". While previous Project Moon games had their share of Monster Clowns already, fans were nonetheless amused by clowns being put on the same list as the likes of cannibalism, psychosis and domestic violence.
- Ligma NoteLigma balls.Company ExplanationA deliberate mispronunciation of Limbus Company by fans, harkening back to an older internet meme in which a fake disease called ligma was claimed to have been responsible for the deaths of several prominent figures.
- Limbussy NoteSimilarily, people have been attaching the -ussy suffix to the first word of the title.
- Telepole Don being associated with Lunacy. note Don's Telepole E.G.O was delayed once due to its passive and even after it was released, its passive still malfunctioned so a hotfix had to be applied. For both occasions, Lunacy was given out.
- 300 Lunacy ExplanationProject Moon's standard response to needing to take the servers down temporarily for maintenance, both for scheduled updates and emergency patches, seems to be mailing 300 Lunacy to everyone as an apology. The playerbase ended up taking notice of this, and it quickly became tradition to half-jokingly celebrate the incoming windfall every time a minor bug or mistake is found.
- Soup Makes You Evil. ExplanationA week after the Hell's Chicken event released Lifetime Stew as an E.G.O. for both Sinclair and Don Quixote, both were announced to have the next set of new Identities going to them, as the two of them were given N Corp Identities.
- Call Of Ishmael ExplanationThe official Twitter account for the game had posted a drawing of Ishmael as a large tentacled woman coming out of the sea, based around wordplay of the famous "Call me Ishmael" line from Moby Dick. This had quickly caught on with fans, who proceeded to make various fanarts of this version of her. In addition, the titular White Whale from Moby Dick is considered to be an Ur-Example of an Eldritch Abomination, making the comparison rather appropriate.
- Limbis Company Explanation A particularly glaring typo present in the release of Canto IV's dungeon that quickly became infamous. The fact the line of dialog is spoken by Faust makes it even more striking.
- The /lcg/ league Explanation The /vg/ League, a sub league of the 4chan Cup, is a Pro Evolution Soccer tournament held on 4chan with teams based on /vg/'s various general threads (threads dedicated to particular games or franchises). /lcg/ (Limbus Company General) was a surprising Unexpected Character in the roster. To even more surprise, they manage to make it to third place in their first tournament, rallying many Project Moon fans – even those who don't frequent the board.
- Dante will never be ballin'. Explanation A snowclone of the "never be ballin'." meme, used in jest as Dante was frequently used as a Forward, frequently getting a portion of the goals. "Dante, DANTEEE WITH THE HEADERRR!!"
- You Want to Score Goals? Victoriously? ExplanationThe name given to the Forward who was model-swapped with You Want To Get Beat? Hurtily?. Frequently overlaps with the previously mentioned "DO YOU LOVE THE CITY YOU LIVE IN?" meme.
- CLAPPED ExplanationThe nickname for the team's goalie, represented by the Headless Ichthys. Notable for performing so many saves during /lcg/'s first season that they were awarded with a Golden Glove.
- IDEAL Explanation (Canto IV Spoilers)Yi sang, having been one of the fowards, scored this absolutely cinematic goal during one of the games. While the original clip is cool on it's own, the popular video edit shown here features Yi Sang scoring the goal with the related Mili song Fly, My Wings playing in the background, even accompanied by him summoning his wings once more upon landing the kick. The video often gets posted whenever Project Moon announces content related to Yi Sang, or when something extremely positive in general gets posted.
- Ship it Monzo! Explanation"Monzo" is the screenname of a Project Moon employee that was attributed to developer tools that were accidentally included with Limbus Company's release. 4chan members jokingly attribute every single bug and exploit in the game to them, and "demand" their public execution as atonement for these errors. Monzo was one of the Strikers in the Cup, and many jokes were made about their execution being delayed every time they scored a successful goal.
- Dante will never be ballin'. Explanation A snowclone of the "never be ballin'." meme, used in jest as Dante was frequently used as a Forward, frequently getting a portion of the goals.
- Clear All Caches ExplanationA Mondegreen based on the title of the fourth Season, "Clear All Cathy" (which is also likely to be the intended pun in its name). This ended up being shockingly Hilarious in Hindsight when in the last fight of Canto VI boots the player back to a mock-up title screen until they click on the "Clear all caches" button, now literally replaced with "Clear all Cathy", to erase Cathy from existence as per her request.
- The ESGOO Curse Explanation Within the Project Moon community, there is a niche Youtuber named ESGOO famed for his extremely comprehensive videos on Limbus Company's mechanics. Said videos are often immediately made outdated by new releases or teasers from Project Moon, to the point where it's been a running joke with the community, and has been extended to whenever any assumption about Limbus Comapny is quickly made outdated. The record for this is within 5 hours, with him posting a video wanting a gun-toting Outis and more Burn-based identities, followed by a teaser for [Lobotomy E.G.O::Magic Bullet] Outis coming out approximately 5 hours later.
- 3 what? Explanation (Major spoilers for Canto VI) With the release of Part 2 of Canto VI came an error in 6-34 where the buff syntax in its event was switched, resulting in something like 'Attack Up, and gain 3'; cue the guessing what '3' should be. Due to the story in 6-34, answers include 'Heathcliff' and 'Voices'.
- "Any Sinclairs able to translate this?" Explanation It's a frequent and ongoing gag for Limbus fans to make use of Ryoshu's acronyms for fun. Depending on how long said acronym is, expect someone in the replies or comments to ask if a resident 'Sinclair' can translate this, followed by someone translating said acronym (or attempting to get close enough, at least).
- NGrider. Explanation NGrider is one of the more infamous members of the English fandom. The reason for this is because NGrider has made a large amount of edits and memes, but got kicked out of the English discord server for being extremely down bad for Ishmael, which is a very reoccurring thing on his Reddit account.
- ENTER Explanation The fandom exploded when Sinclair was announced to be getting an ID based on Philip from Library of Ruina, who was already a Fountain of Memes back in that game. The result was a deluge of images featuring Philip and his E.G.O. in various doorways, including the usual Event entrance button, and a mass repeat of the various jokes around Philip and his infamous habit. Some dread the idea of a potential event involving fighting him again, while others instead make joking edits of Sinclair in Philip's scenes with all the characters replaced by the other Sinners, with an oddly common trend being Oswald having his role taken by Don Quixote.
- "Oh my god he crashed the servers." Explanation Upon the launch of the new Walpurgisnacht event, players immediately began noticing a whole slew of server errors greeting them. Come to find out, the Limbus servers are at an all-time high, something not seen since the launch of the game.
- Fuck off, Carmen. Explanation The line, "You're Wrong, Miss Carmen." in the uptie story quickly became a memed sentence, especially given who the ID is on and who it is.
- Rip to Philip but I am Simply Built Different Explanation Essentially the reason given by Sinclair as to why he won't distort. Even when Carmen tells him that she's dealt with someone very similar before (Philip), Sinclair argues back that he'll simply keep forging on despite his fear and sorrow. What follows next can be taken as Carmen coping with that answer, narrating that sooner or later he'll lend her his ear again.
- The Philclair Curse Explanation For some ungodly reason, many YouTubers and streamers had an issues with ONLY pulling Philipclair. Arugeable the worst receiver of this was ESGOO, who, would pull over 200 rolls before being forced to use the pity mechanic to obtain one of the EGO's, such to the degree he joked on stream about hearing The Voice. Made even funnier when they would do a Solo run of the mirror dungeon with [Lobotomy E.G.O::Sloshing] Ishmael and a bug assigned damage to Philclair even though he was never deployed.
- RIP Kully's Sheath Solo/6 Dogs Explanation RIP Kully is one of many creators who showcases videos of self-imposed challenges of Limbus Company. The most grueling one that has been shown so far is their attempt to beat the final boss(es) of Canto VI with only [[Shi Assoc. South Section 5]] Heathcliff. As Shi Heathcliff is arguably considered a Low-Tier Letdown ID, not to mention that the final phase requires six corroded Telepoles (which is completely luck dependent) in order to avoid a unclashable One-Hit Kill, this is notoriously difficult to achieve and has taken a total of nearly 50 hours spanning across seven different streams for a winning attempt.
- It was also common before RIP Kully finished the solo, people would joke about whether or not he was going to distort or gain E.G.O. Funny enough, a ton of RP annoucnts were present during the streams, including a few Carmens.
