Humans Are The Real Monsters / Crossed

Go To

Even within the world of Crossed, where the main cause of the horrific world the characters live in are the Crossed themselves, it is made clear that the uninfected can be just as vile and dangerous.

  • Joseph Pratt Sr. from Family Values is among one of the worst villains in Crossed, despite not being infected. Even before C-Day, Joseph repeatedly abused and raped his wife and children, even getting his oldest son to rape their siblings as well, with the sole exception being Adeline simply because she was seen as the devil in his eyes. While maintaining a good mask and seemingly reformed in New Haven, Pratt kept up his abusiveness, leading to one of the daughters committing suicide due to the abuse and his wife Joyce becoming infected, killing him and taking over the Crossed army.
  • Harold Lorre shows that the protagonists can be just as awful as the villains. Appearing in Psychopath, Harold Lorre lied to a group of people to help him out, before systematically and brutally slaughtering each of them before desecrating their corpses. He goes as far as raping Claire and Rick before having them killed, all out of a deep obsession with a woman named Amanda. Even before the events, it’s revealed after rescuing a woman named Lori, he kept her hostage and raped her as well, all under the delusion of love. His actions were so bad, he managed to traumatize the innocent Amanda into becoming a hardened murderer and cannibal. Worse, he manages to survive the events of Psychopath and gets off with a slap on the wrist.
  • Badlands features multiple characters that are as bad as The Crossed:
    • Steve from Homo Superior was an unrepentant Torture Technician and sadomasochist before C-Day, who, in the end, decided that she was no better then the infected and willingly agreed to be infected to become one with Crossed.
    • Harold Lorre from the aforementioned Psychopath returns in Yellow Belly where he convinces the young Edmund into having sex with the woman whom he killed by accident. This event leads to the biker gang getting caught by surprise when the second Crossed horde arrives, as well as Edmund's own death at the end of the arc.
    • Gideon Wells from The Golden Road was a psychopathic psychological abuser, constantly humiliating and taunting all the people in his writer’s retreat, causing some of them to go insane. While he does pay a lot of money to his workers, it's solely to keep himself out of trouble. To make things worse, he is revealed to have pulled a massive insurance scam where he got all the citizens of “Stump Town” to mutilate their bodies and amputate them before exposing them, leading to Stump Town having an undying hatred of him and the infected stumped citizens coming after him purely out of revenge.
    • Clooney ends up becoming this as well, with his jealously turning him into a psychopath and turning on everyone, killing Tabitha before causing the entire building to become infected, all out of spite towards Gideon Wells.
    • Gore Angels has Ryan, who is revealed to have orchestrated the gang rape of protagonist Emiko before C-Day and posted it online. When confronted with the information, he simply called her a slut and a liar.
    • Sutter from issues #57-61 seems like a benevolent leader, but it quickly turns out that he just wants to sacrifice all of his community members (and himself) to take out as many Crossed as he can.
    • Wentz and his entire entourage in Gavin’s Arc are a group of human traffickers who were infamous within the porn industry, which they used to sexually exploit dozens of children, which in turn eventually led to many of them dying one way or another, including Gavin’s teenage daughter. While Wentz (possibly) turned a new leaf, the same can’t be said for his cohorts, who showed no remorse, with the sole exception of Shirley.
    • Morgan and Olivia from Lesser of Two Evils manipulated a group of people to eliminate each other with paranoia simply out of their own self-interest.
    • Jack from Shrink loses all sympathy when it is revealed he molested his brother Clancy when they were children and turned him into a violent and abusive alcoholic. Not only that, but he makes no effort to keep the desolate town he was hiding in from being overrun and his neighbors from being raped, tortured and murdered, and also kicks out his girlfriend Tiffany straight to the Crossed to save his own skin. When the story ends with him about to get infected by the Crossed Clancy, it's much easier to root for the latter than for the former.
  • Wish You Were Here has The Gamekeeper, a psychopathic narcissist who flaunts his ability to help others using his skills and supplies, while raping and abusing the women in the group, leading one of them to commit suicide after he kills her husband.
  • Dead or Alive features Richie, who shows that in the end a regular person can be an asshole even within the worst of the world. Richie is very egotistical with no empathy towards anyone, frequently attempts to get his group to cut out the “useless” group members, and is revealed to have abandoned his girlfriend to save his own skin. This eventually leads him to be left for dead by his group and his well-deserved death as a result of his own recklessness and stupidity.
  • Beauregard Salt from +100 is the most extreme example. Before C-Day, he was already a serial killing cannibal. When witnessing the havoc of C-Day, he felt absolute joy and wanted to perpetuate the Crossed epidemic for as long as possible. The worst part? Despite being infected, it’s revealed that The Virus rendered him completely unaffected apart from the facial rash, due to him already being a murderous psychopath. The Crossed virus didn't show him anything he didn't already know. By all accounts, Salt is as human as can be, and he put his own human mind into forming a whole widespread clan as his legacy.
  • Commander Chief Nathan from +100 Mimic leads a whole compound of his into treating women (and a few of the men, too) as sex slaves and has his men rape and abuse them as they please. It says quite a lot that Archivist Julie and her companions chose to side with Fleshcook, a Crossed who, despite being a descendant of one of Salt's lieutenants, is at worst Affably Evil and a Well-Intentioned Extremist.
