  • A tombstone in the English translation of the NES version of the original Final Fantasy reads "Here lies Erdrick" (though it said "Here lies Link" in the Japanese version) poking fun at the then-rival Dragon Quest series, referring to the legendary hero in the first three games. Several years later, Final Fantasy publisher Square merged with Dragon Quest publisher Enix, resulting in the two series being published by the same company. Incidentally, later translations of the game directly translated the engraving on the tombstone, having it read "Here lies Link" as in the Japanese version, losing the joke present in the original translation.
  • Final Fantasy VII:
    • The game originally was going to be developed for the Nintendo 64, but between Nintendo's strong arm policies on 3rd party developers and the then upcoming PlayStation using discs that would have more storage compared to the N64's cartridges, Square decided to put the game with Sony's console instead. Twenty years later, Square announces a port of Final Fantasy VII (as well as several other Final Fantasy games) would be coming to the Nintendo Switch, bringing everything in a full circle.
    • Final Fantasy VII has AVALANCHE, an eco-terrorist group launching a violent offensive against Shinra Corporation, an electric power company behind the Mako reactors sucking the planet dry. Come 2014, Square Enix not only names their cloud gaming business Shinra Technologies, but one of the first studios to sign up for the service? Avalanche Studios, the developers behind the Just Cause games.
    • An In-Universe example occurs in Final Fantasy VII. One NPC in North Corel expresses his desire to get out of there and "go to the town in the south". You later visit that town, and it's probably the one town that's worse off than North Corel.
  • In Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, one of the "special generic" characters you can recruit is a Hunter with the name Cheney. FFTA came out in the States mid/late 2003, long before the infamous hunting accident involving Dick Cheney and Harry Whittington. Similarly, one of the Missions is requested by one "Cheney, Hunter" (they might be the same guy).
