Hates My Secret Identity / Fan Works

Go To

Cases where somebody admires a superhero while hating their civilian identity in Fan Works.

The DCU
  • In Batman: Anarchy for All, Lonnie Machin is a Batman fanboy but loathes Bruce Wayne, whom the teen believes is no different from his chronically absent and emotionally abusive father, a Wayne Enterprises board member. When Hugo Strange relates his knowledge of Batman's secret identity, Anarky has his second largest breakdown of the book, unable to accept the very idea that his idol and "Gotham's fattest leech" could be one and the same.
  • Dark Savior features a Selina Kyle actually hostile to Batman whom she derides as a self-righteous twit encouraging bored maniacs to escalate. Their relationship started as the traditional sexually charged chase-around but it soured after they had sex and seventeen-year-old Selina found herself pregnant - hinting she may resent Batman a tiny bit for forcing her to deal with an upcoming baby.

Marvel Cinematic Universe

  • When Peta saves Morgan from a bomb planted in the Stark estate (later revealed to be Quentin Beck's doing) in Peta Parker, they walk away with everyone venerating Spider-Man as the one who saved a five-year-old while Peta was the "cowardly babysitter" who left her to die. Tony fires her as an intern and a babysitter, she becomes a social and physical punching bag at school, and The Daily Bugle smears her senseless, making her face recognizable to everyone in New York. All of this while Peta keeps the truth to herself and makes Morgan swear to secrecy. While Tony eventually takes her back (though on very thin ice), it isn't until Mysterio outs her secret identity and tries pinning all of his crimes on her that the Avengers all realize that they were wrong about her.

Miraculous Ladybug

  • Back To Us: Nino and Adrien go through a rough patch due to the mounting tensions in Paris over how to treat akumatized victims; however, even after they fix their fractured friendship, Nino continues to hate Chat Noir for the role he played in stoking the conflict. This persists for some time after Chat Noir's Heel Realization, even as he strives to make amends.
  • Cheshire: Alix becomes a big fan of Marinette's heroic alter ego Cheshire after being saved by the hero but joins the bullying of Marinette when she joins the class.
  • From the Ashes:
    • Adrien hates Ladybug for how she insisted that they needed to maintain their secret identities even after Hawkmoth's defeat, feeling that she failed to support him when he needed it most. He also starts dating Marinette after returning to Paris, both blissfully unaware that they're partners.
    • Nino and Adrien are friends, but Carapace dislikes Chat Noir, both for killing Gabriel and for his abrasive, uncooperative attitude. The feeling is mutual on Chat Noir's end.
  • In Hop to It, it goes back and forth with Jack Smith/Rabbit. Rabbit is a Hero with Bad Publicity and a Destructive Saviour who is initially mistaken for an akuma and then for a villain in her own right after she causes a lot of damage to a Paris neighbourhood due to a new power she can't control, but Jack, while initially an outcast (an American transfer student with a limited grasp of French), gains some popularity from her classmates after helping save Adrien from an akuma out of costume. On the other hand, while Ladybug knows that Rabbit is a good person, Marinette hates Jack out of misguided jealousy, believing she's interested in Adrien. When Marinette finds out Jack has a boyfriend back in the US, she apologises for her behaviour and she and Alya (who has since become a Rabbit supporter) make friends with her - just in time for Rabbit to screw up again and lose a lot of Ladybug's trust in her. However, it seems Ladybug may have forgiven Rabbit by the end of chapter 9, inspired by Jack's forgiveness of Marinette.
    • Gets an amusing Lampshade Hanging just before Rabbit first meets Chloé - "Maybe they could start fresh. It would be pretty funny if Chloé adored her as a superhero." - and then subverted when she hates Rabbit just as much as Jack.
  • In the Role Swap AU Lady Luck, Marinette is one of Lady Luck's biggest fans but sees Chloé as nothing more than a petty bully. When she finds out they're one and the same, she gets akumatized into Miss Fortune. Fortunately, Lady Luck tells her that she is genuinely trying to make amends for her previous behavior, resulting in a Rebuilt Pedestal.
  • Scarlet Lady: Chloé has as huge a crush on Adrien as she does in canon but loathes Cat Noir. Adrien, meanwhile, has a crush on Marinette but initially treats Marigold with cold professionalism. Finally, nobody likes Chloé in her civilian identity but she is fairly popular in her hero identity since she's able to spin the press in her favor (though those who personally encounter her generally end up loathing her as well).
  • Spots Off: After Marinette's Secret Identity is exposed to the world, she wonders if learning that her idol is actually the girl she's bullied for years will shatter Chloé's hero worship and make her turn on her. As it turns out, her hero worship wins out, and her continued support of Ladybug may have helped ensure that her father didn't withdraw his own support from the heroes.

My Hero Academia

  • No Such Thing As a Hopeless Case: Shigaraki utterly loathes All Might, but gets along well with Toshinori, unaware that he's both All Might's secret identity and The Mole who's trying to redeem as many members of the League as he can. This means Toshinori spends a lot of time listening to him rant and rail against All Might.

Naruto

  • A Drop of Poison: After Naruto makes several permanent Kage Bunshins, with several building their own unique identities, he finds that Kiritori-sensei treats him and Muremaru very differently. Namely, he's resentful and cruel towards Naruto, intentionally trying to sabotage his growth, while offering Muremaru legitimate support and encouragement. Eventually, he calls Kiritori out on this Moral Myopia, and they start forming a better relationship.

Rizzoli & Isles

  • Calamity Jane Meets Doctor Isles: Tommy Rizzoli idolizes Jake Wyatt, but loses all respect for Jane when he learns about the true nature of her relationship with Maura.
