Genocide Backfire / Fan Works

Go To

Times where a villain's attempt to Screw Destiny and solve their problems through mass-murder completely backfires on them in Fan Works.

Crossovers
  • In The Butcher Bird: The World Government's attempt to genocide ghouls shortly after their accidental creation (which is arguably reasonable given that they're superhuman killing machines who view humans as prey) results in the few survivors going underground and repopulating their race on the fringes of society while harboring a very large grudge against said World Government. This is not helped by how the World Government's policy of wiping out information has caused almost everyone by the time of the story to have forgotten that ghouls exist...

Avatar: The Last Airbender

  • Embers (Vathara): While apologizing to Katara, Zuko unintentionally reveals that according to Fire Nation custom, Aang is obligated to kill whomever murdered his father. Since Aang doesn't know who his father is, Ozai has effectively convinced his people that he and/or his allies will wipe out every potential culprit.
  • In The Last Firebender, the Fire Nation's attempt to wipe out the Avatar and Air Nomads led to the survivors teaming up with the Earth Kingdom to retaliate.
  • Downplayed in Still Stand in the Sun: the Fire Nation's efforts to round up all of the Southern Tribe's waterbenders was more successful here, but ultimately resulted in creating two bloodbenders who have escaped captivity.

Godzilla

The Legend of Zelda

  • A Tale of Two Rulers: In his past lives, Ganondorf's various wars against the Gerudo were in part vengeance for the genocide committed against the Gerudo (which was caused after Ganondorf originally attacked Hyrule).

Mass Effect

  • An exceedingly dark example occurs in Mass Effect: Synthesis. Midway through the story, the Citadel Council attempts genocide against humanity with a biological strike when they learn that they allied with the Reapers and destroyed the Batarians, not realizing that the humans were just acting in self-defense when the Batarians attempted to enslave them. The Council's attack didn't immediately wipe mankind out, but the loss of life was so hugely horrific that, in retaliation, the humans and the Reapers launch their own brutal campaign of genocide against the asari and salarians. Four years later, both species are extinct.

My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic

Naruto

  • Blackkat's Reverse: Kiri and Kumo strove to wipe out the Uzumaki clan, razing Uzushio to the ground. Konoha, Uzushio's ostensible allies, did nothing to aid them, using the last survivors for their own purposes. Then Kurama arrives in the past, declaring himself to be an Uzumaki, and throws off the shinobi system's whole balance of power through a jinchuuriki uprising.
  • Catch Your Breath:
    • Tomoe's clan was massacred, with only two survivors making it out alive. Over the course of five years, Tomoe is personally responsible for the deaths of nearly every perpetrator involved with the act.
    • Wen Chao destroys Lotus Pier; in doing so, he sets into motion a series of events that culminates in Wei Wuxian mastering demonic cultivation and raising an Cavalry of the Dead. This leads to the fall of the Qishan Wen clan.

One Piece

  • This Bites!: The World Government knew there was a D. bloodline hiding in Flevance but didn't know who it was. So as soon as they had an excuse, they did everything they could to wipe out the entire country. Not only did one of the people that they were trying to kill survive, but the incident also left him bearing quite the chip on his shoulder and a massive grudge against the World Government that he only let go of because of the rogue actions of one of their Marines. When he learned the real reason for the loss of his home and family, however, that grudge returned tenfold.
