Friendly Fandoms / Steven Universe

Go To

  • With the Gravity Falls fandom and, to a lesser extent, the Over the Garden Wall fandom. They are cartoons that set up a light and cheery tone with plenty of humor, but gradually become more depressing and horrifying. In the case of Gravity Falls, they both have cheerful protagonists (and Dipper), triangular characters affectionately referred as Doritos and have had their popular fan theories confirmed, and they both take inspiration from the creator and their sibling's childhood vacations. Crossovers between them are frequent and are jokingly referred to as "Steven Falls Over."
  • There's also a great deal of overlap with Legend of Korra. While the two shows are very different in tone and content, they are both plot-driven, anime-inspired action cartoons with LBGTQ canon characters. Fanart which depicts Korra and Asami fusing is particularly popular, since their color scheme is the same as Ruby and Sapphire's. Although with Korrasami, the blue one's actually the hothead, while the red one's more chill.
  • They were pretty friendly before, but as of "Jail Break", Steven Universe and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure fans have been getting along exceptionally well, especially with the introduction of Jasper as a tall, muscular, hot blooded, wild-haired character with a pompadour-looking helmet weapon who gets hit with a The Dog Bites Back moment and is trapped at the bottom of the ocean.
  • Fans of Steven Universe seem to enjoy Undertale a lot. Tons of crossover art of the two, including Fusions and depictions of the characters together or in each other's setting, has been created, and the fandoms tend to get along very well. Garnet's "I Am" Song is especially popular thing and has countless parodies due to the refrain referencing being made of love, which is a plot point in Undertale.
    • That very song and its parodies (due to how popular the parody was vs how popular the original was, along with some other things), however, sparked a war that'd have placed it under Fandom Rivalry. Since the end of 2016, or somewhere around there, however, it's back to being friendly, though some unfriendly jabs are made here and there.
  • Among older fans, there's an overlap between the fandom of this show and Mystery Science Theater 3000. It's the fact that both shows feature Joel Hodgson, as well as an uptight, intelligent mom named Pearl. For added irony, Joel plays a character who has a crush on her! note
  • The Invader Zim Fandom can also be added to this list, especially with comparisons between Zim and Peridot being made. The fact that Rebecca Sugar also is a big IZ fan and even used to write IZ fan fiction helps all the more so.
  • An overlap is starting to come up between SU fans and Jet Set Radio fans, the impetus of which is likely Rebecca Sugar confirming that Amethyst is a fan of the game's soundtrack. A good bit of fanart crossing over the two series has cropped up.
  • Steven Universe and Gravity Falls have become especially close after the premiere of "A Tale of Two Stans" and the beginning of the 3rd Stevenbomb (Steven Universe S2E14 "Cry for Help") both aired on July 13th, especially since both episodes were very emotionally charged. There were a lot of jokes that the creators did this intentionally to mess with the fans.
  • There is a rather amusing one between fans of Steven Universe and fans of Daft Punk, largely due to the Awesome Music and the feel-good/happy atmospheres.
  • And now, with the We Bare Bears fandom as well, largely because Estelle (Garnet) sings the theme song, not to mention that Charlene Yi (Ruby) voices Chloe Park. Many comparisons have been drawn between the three bears and the Crystal Gems as well.
  • As of later developments, fans of Gunnerkrigg Court have taken note of the similarities between the two leads of the respective media—Antimony Carver and Steven. This extends to both of their mothers dying due to passing on a power that the child would inherit, and only being somewhat human.
  • While the Disney and Pokémon fandoms overlap with pretty much every other fandom out there, there's a few crossover comparisons that crop up regularly: Steven and Lilo (plays a stringed instrument, chubby, lives on the beach, and has multiple surrogate parents of the same gender, some of which might be gay. For Lilo, it's Jumba and Pleakley, as well as Cobra Bubbles and Nani's boyfriend David), and for Steven, it's all of the Gems. Sapphire and Queen Elsa are also compared (True Blue Femininity, An Ice Person). After the events of Keystone Motel, Sapphire and Mike Wazowski (both are cyclopes) and Ruby and Anger (small, red, and occasionally Burning with Anger) tend to pop up. Meanwhile, Ruby and Sapphire draw parallels to Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire (for obvious reasons).
  • One is starting to crop up with the Homestar Runner fandom. The consensus seems to be that Steven is Homestar (cheerful protagonist, star shirt), Jasper is Strong Mad (loud, tall, angry, muscles), Peridot is Strong Bad (small, angry, thinks they're more of a threat than they actually are), and Lapis is Strong Sad (sad, quiet, abused).
  • If the audiences at conventions are any indication then there would appear to be an overlap between fans of Steven Universe and My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, loathe as some are on both sides to admit it.
  • And friendliness between the SU fans and the fandom surrounding SWAT Kats, likely due to Rebecca Sugar admitting to liking the series back in the 90s, and it showing up on Uncle Grandpa's checklist at the end of "Say Uncle" (and possibly indirectly beginning a revival Kickstarter from the creators themselves).
  • When Total Drama Presents: The Ridonculous Race premiered, old and new fans of Total Drama who are current fans of Steven Universe quickly grew accustomed to each other, as for two weeks, its Thursday slot shared Steven Universe's. Fans also compared the Ruby and Sapphire ship to MacArthur and Sanders.
  • There seems to be a bit of one developing with the fandom of Miraculous Ladybug; both are Anime-influenced Magical Girl series with male protagonists, and several pieces of fanart have cropped up with Steven and Connie as Ladybug and Cat Noir (though who's dressed as who sometimes varies).
  • Has a fandom overlap with Land of the Lustrous due to them both being gem based works that focus on sexless gems. Does occasionally cross over into Fandom Rivalry due to those that accuse this series' creator of copying or heavily drawing inspiration from the other, and vice versa, mainly with those allegations coming from those who jump to conclusions without knowing much about the other work.
  • Has a crossover audience with OK K.O.! Let's Be Heroes, mainly due to that show's creator, Ian Jones-Quartey, having previously worked on this show (and also being in a relationship with Rebecca Sugar).
  • There's a pretty big overlap with fans of RWBY, due to both shows starring young optimistic protagonists clad in red, and the fact that both shows have a cast mostly named for colors. There's also the large proportion of Action Girl heroines, each with their own unique weapons. And of course, there's the over-the-top action backed by Awesome Music. Safe to say, crossovers and fanfic are extremely common. The fact that both feature realistic LGBTQ representation and similar themes also helps.
  • Another friendly fandom is that of the 2018 reboot of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. Both cartoons feature strong female characters, ample LGBTQ representation, complex family dynamics, and main characters coping with the legacies of space-faring, warlike predecessors. Several fans have noticed strong parallels between White Diamond and Horde Prime.
  • Transformers even have Fanons, due to characters that originated from different planets.
