Elena of Avalor

Foil in this series.
  • Chancellor Esteban Flores to Duke Cristóbal Castillo. Both are cousins to Elena on opposite sides of her family, but Esteban is a Jerk with a Heart of Gold while Cristobal is a Nice Guy who turns out to be a Bitch in Sheep's Clothing. Both also betrayed their families for their selfish desires, with Esteban betraying them for power when be believed he wasn't loved, while Cristobal did it to get more money. Additionally, Esteban was left troubled by his parents' death, while Cristobal was happy his father died, and both events continue to influence them to the present day.
  • Esteban to Ash. Both gave up their families for power, and when they're both given the miraculous chance to have them back, they mess it up. Ash willingly throws them away, while Esteban tried so hard to keep them that he lied to them because he knows the reason why he gave them up is irredeemable. Additionally, both Ash and Esteban lost people dear to them (and possibly parents for Ash) at a young age that forever changed their view of the world for the worse and found Parental Substitutes, but Ash became worse because her father-figure was Zopilote while Esteban was raised like a son by his grandparents. Interestingly, Ash chose to have a husband and daughter of her own only to end up hurting them, while Esteban remained single due to his various issues, which was probably the better choice between the two.
  • Princess Marisa greatly resembles Elena. Both are endearing All Loving Heroines who are determined to do the right thing against all odds. However, Elena is the eldest child (and thus the crown heir) of her family, is mature (mostly), and has gone through traumatizing experiences that make her intimidating to set off, while Marisa is the youngest child of her family and is a Wide-Eyed Idealist.
  • Prince Marzel greatly resembles Gabe physically and in personality. Both are rule-followers stuck with a headstrong and compassionate female counterpart. He and Gabe also have Ship Tease towards Elena.
  • Queen Abigail to King Hector. Both are loud and boisterous, but Hector has no manners and is a complete jerkass while Abigail is friendly to everyone (who isn't a jerk like Hector, anyways), has boundaries, and isn't afraid to call out jerkassery like Hector's.
  • Princess Chloe to Hector. Both have No Social Skills and their Character Development revolves around learning to be better around people. Hector is/was a rude and inconsiderate Psychopathic Man Child, while Chloe is a sheltered but friendly and well-meaning young girl.
  • Chloe to Princess Valentina. Both are princesses from rich kingdoms who come across as impolite and inconsiderate at first, and are overly basked within their own opinions, but ultimately wind up showing a much nicer side. But while Valentina bragged about how great Paraiso is in hopes of impressing Elena, Chloe is merely Innocently Insensitive and had No Social Skills, in addition to taking her lesson too well. And while Valentina solved her magical problem using magic herself, Chloe did so by Talking the Monster to Death.
  • Victor Delgado and Esteban both felt like No Respect Guys, feeling as if they'd never nearly amount to how appreciated their family and colleagues were, leading to them betraying them to Shuriki. Neither of them were happy when Shuriki didn't follow through with some parts of her end of the deal, but Esteban regrets his decision yet wants to hide from it while Victor doesn't seemed to have learned anything, is letting history repeat, and would rather blame Esteban for not sticking up for him. Additionally, Victor has no partner or family besides his daughter Carla while his relationship with his father after their exile is unknown, while Esteban has no family of his own but is surrounded by his cousins and grandparents. Even their roles in season 3 become different: while Esteban pulled a Face–Heel Turn as he become a wanted criminal siding with Ash and their group of villains, Victor pulled a Heel–Face Turn as he chooses to make amends to Elena for all he has done to her and Avalor. Additionally, Avalor's history completely demonizes Esteban and disregards anything good he did prior to his betrayal being discovered, whereas Victor's previous villainy is completely ignored and he's treated as if he were the victim.
