Fanfic / Sonic Comics Rewrite: One Change can mean a new chance

Go To

Sonic Comics Rewrite: One Change can mean a new chance is a fanfic based on Sonic the Hedgehog (Archie Comics) by DawnTotadile.

The story is basically a retelling of the comics, with one major difference - Snively (or Colin, as he is known in the story) was abandoned by his father when he was two, then found and adopted by Sir Charles Hedgehog, making him Sonic's cousin and a Freedom Fighter from the very beginning.

Tropes:

  • Adaptational Heroism: Colin is far more noble and heroic than his canon counterpart.
  • Adaptational Name Change: Played with - unlike canon (where everyone called him Snively), Colin is referred to by his birth name by everyone except Robotnik.
  • Adaptational Villainy: Junior Robotnik replaces Snively as Robotnik's henchman, and is far more evil than he was in the cartoon, although he shows signs of heading towards a Heel–Face Turn.
  • Back-to-Back Badasses: Antoine and Colin do this in Chapter 66 when fighting off the robots that have invaded the play of Sonic and Sally's wedding.
  • Body Horror: Colin has a Chaos Emerald embedded in his chest.
  • Darker and Edgier: Than the early comics, to some extent. See Body Horror for one such example.
  • Deflector Shield: Colin has the ability to create crystalline shields to protect himself and anyone with him.
  • Dope Slap: Colin gives Sonic one in Chapter 9, and another in Chapter 14. He gives him a third one in Chapter 35 for pointing out that they could get killed at any point.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Junior is the only being in existence Robotnik shows love and concern for.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Junior's perfectly happy with Robotizing Colin, but the thought of actually killing his cousin makes him feel uneasy.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: Downplayed - Colin wields a sword in battle, but he's not the leader of the Freedom Fighters.
  • Honorary Uncle: Many Freedom Fighters call Colin "uncle", as he takes care of a lot of them.
  • Hypocrite: Robotnik gets upset that Car-Heem nearly killed Junior because of his ignorance and uncaring nature, but fails to realise that he himself did the same thing to hundreds of Mobians.
  • Imposter Forgot One Detail: More like several details - Colin is able to tell that the robotic Sally is not the real one as she constantly calls Geoffrey St. John (whom she has only just met) by his first name; wears a darker blue vest than usual; doesn't use Nicole and constantly calls Colin "Doctor" instead of "Uncle".
  • Internal Reveal: At different points in the story, Bunnie and Tails learn that Colin is Robotnik's nephew.
  • Interspecies Adoption: Colin, an Overlander, was adopted by Sir Charles Hedgehog, who is Exactly What It Says on the Tin.
  • In the Hood: Colin wears a hooded cloak for the first few chapters.
  • Lawful Neutral: Warden Zobotnik of the No-Zone falls under this alignment - he's technically a good guy, but he's also somewhat sadistic.
  • Losing Your Head: In Chapter 63, Robotnik accidentally pulls Junior's head off when he grabs the binoculars Junior was using to check on King Gong.
  • The Medic: Colin serves as the healer of the group, specialising in herbal remedies.
  • Parental Abandonment: Colin's biological father abandoned him when he was only two years old.
  • Parental Substitute: Colin serves as a father figure for the other Freedom Fighters.
  • Pet the Dog:
    • Upon learning of his relationship with Colin, Robotnik said that Colin would be better off with Sir Charles. According to Sally, that was the only nice thing he ever did for his nephew.
    • During the Chaotic Observations arc, Robotnik compliments Colin by saying that he's a better man than his (Colin's) father, then tells him to get some sleep. He even attempts to thank Colin for saving Junior.
  • Put Their Heads Together: Colin does this to Geoffrey and Hamlin when they start arguing.
  • Species Surname: Averted with Colin, who's a hedgehog by adoption only. Played straight with several other characters, however.
  • Teleportation: Colin gains this ability thanks to the Chaos Emerald embedded in his chest.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: In Chapter 81, Colin uses his armor's energy supply to save Junior from deactivation. Robotnik "thanks" Colin by launching him into space without a spacesuit (although he DOES try to actually thank him before that).
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Colin calls Sally out on her plan to get herself robotized so that she could analyze the Robotizer with her special boots in order to reverse the effects, pointing out that she didn't have a plan to get either the data or herself back to Rotor if she did happen to get it, and that they cannot afford to lose her the way they could a common soldier.
