* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation: It's implied that Ted is the one writing the journal entries that spell out what's going on each day. With this in mind, when one of the children "leaves" the shelter due to being hungry, thirsty, or unable to have medical care for too long, did they actually leave, or is Ted lying to himself in an attempt to cope with their deaths?
* ComplacentGamingSyndrome: Every member can go five days without water and ten days without food, but most players opt to give them water ''and'' food every five days to make it easier to keep track of. This also prevents them from getting ill in the case of food.
* GoodBadBugs: Sometimes, after the HeroicSacrifice event mentioned on the main page, you'll still have the option to let Pancake out to find something.
* NintendoHard: This game is ''not'' easy. On top of only having a minute to gather as many resources as possible (Ted and Dolores' odd controls don't help any in this regard), surviving is mostly down to the RandomNumberGod. You never know when an earthquake may strike and wipe out your resources, or if you'll lose a family member on an excursion to the surface, or if that knocking at your shelter door is a merchant, the military, or a [[BreadEggsMilkSquick band of angry raiders]].
* ParanoiaFuel: Many of the scenarios in this game refer to a curious sound that could turn out to be nothing, or it can turn out to be people trying to break in and kill you. Now try sitting alone in your house after going through a few of those scenarios, listening to every odd, disembodied sound in your house...
* ScrappyMechanic: Craziness; While every other killing condition has relatively simple parameters, craziness is tied to a hidden value of sanity and manifests when sanity is too low. There are ''many'' scenarios that can lower sanity, along with craziness being practically guaranteed should someone be alone. All of this not helped by craziness being the only condition to not have a designated cure item: The player is forced to rely on luck to get scenarios to raise sanity, and if someone's sanity is too low then there's the possibility that getting one of these rare scenarios still might not be enough.
* SelfImposedChallenge: Aside from the official Scavenging and Survival challenges, it's popular for people to come up with their own "challenges" that place self-imposed rules regarding what the player can or can't do between the scavenging and survival phases (often involving different sets for various periods of days in the latter's case); these challenges usually follow a certain theme, including references to other works. One common player of the game on Website/YouTube, Kubz Scouts, has made countless videos of him doing challenges requested by his commentors.
* TearJerker:
** Having to see Pancake die if you don't have a medkit available when he returns wounded.
** The description for when you have no photos available is utterly soul-crushing.
