* AdaptationDisplacement: The movie is based on a Dark Horse comic, but despite the comic selling over 400,000 copies and being relatively successful, few remember it.
* FridgeHorror: One of the most commonly suggested methods of long-term interstellar exploration is [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Future_of_space_exploration#Artificial_Intelligence_and_Robotic_Space_Craft_Development via self-replicating robots or transmitted self-compiling AI]]. In other words, the sort of thing that is encountered in this film.
* HilariousInHindsight:
** Captain Everton predicts that the salvage will get them "thirty million dollars, that's what's comin' our way". The movie's box office earning was $30.7 million.
** A panicked Woods at one point says Squeaky got "assimilated" by the machines, an obvious reference to the Borg from ''Franchise/StarTrek''. The film's director, John Bruno, subsequently directed several episodes of ''Series/StarTrekVoyager'' (none of which had the Borg as enemies, though the former Borg drone Seven of Nine was by that point a main character).
%%* {{Narm}}: I'm a friend, alright? I'm Cuban, I'm not American!
%%** Steve...
* TheProblemWithLicensedGames: The film gave birth to an infamously awful and NintendoHard Playstation game.
* SoOkayItsAverage: The general consensus is that the film is a prime example of StarringSpecialEffects, with every other aspect of the production being middling at best.
%%* {{Squick}}: Too many examples to list. Eesh...
* SugarWiki/VisualEffectsOfAwesome: Those are some absolutely ''wicked'' animatronics work. About the only reason to watch the movie is for the absolutely killer robot cyborgs provided by Steve Johnson and Eric Allard (with [[Creator/TippettStudio Phil Tippett]] for CGI), and nearly every single one of them was done with 100% PracticalEffects. And the giant "Goliath" monster is a thing of beauty.
