1* AwardSnub: It got a surprising Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay in 1990, but, with it being the lone nomination for the film, it likely never had a chance. However, the category was actually a bit weak that year, with a trio of lesser films by good writer-directors (Alice, Avalon, Film/GreenCard) and the eventual winner Ghost being more of a crowd-pleaser than an innovative bit of cinema, so you can make a case for Metropolitan as the most deserving in hindsight.
2* OlderThanTheyThink: Creator/WhitStillman being a mentor to Creator/NoahBaumbach explains why the film is reminiscent of Baumbach's work, but the stylized, detailed aesthetic was very clearly an influence on Creator/WesAnderson as well. Creator/RichardLinklater also seemed to have taken some influence from it for Film/DazedAndConfused; Slater was sort of a Texas Stoner version of Charlie, and the Mitch[=/=]Pink dynamic has echoes of Tom and Nick from this film.
