[[WMG:Petunia knew all along about Peter Pettigrew being the Potters' betrayer.]]
In some AU fanfics, Lily sent her sister a letter telling about the SecretKeeper switch. Unfortunately, the Dursleys never knew Sirius Black was accused of that (they only knew he was sent to prison for supposedly being a mass murderer) or that he was denied a trial.

[[WMG: Ginny and Luna first met and became friends offscreen during this book.]]
* Ginny is DemotedToExtra over the next couple of books, during which time a lot of readers conjecture that she dealt with her own insecurities and the trauma of what happened to her in [[Literature/HarryPotterAndTheChamberOfSecrets the previous book]]. Luna was probably somewhere in a similar process given that she had lost her own mother three years prior, and the two may have bonded over that (and perhaps even having to relive their respective awful experiences when in close proximity to the Dementors that had been posted around Hogwarts). Or maybe Ginny just stuck up for Luna at some point when the latter was getting bullied. It's casually mentioned in Book 4 that the Lovegoods "couldn't get tickets" to the Quidditch World Cup, indicating that the Weasleys were acquainted with them by that point in the story.

[[WMG: Lucius Malfoy and/or Dolores Umbridge were behind the dementors targeting Harry throughout the year.]]
* We know the Ministry is not above abusing their authority over dementors to "take out" people they deem a threat. The two of them were colleagues and probably friends, and Lucius surely wanted revenge for Harry freeing Dobby and fucking up his plan to open the Chamber the previous year.

[[WMG: The Beatles song "Come Together" was actually written by the Marauder's Map, about its four creators.]]
Verse 1 is James Potter
* ''Here come old flat top'' - "Flat top" could be a type of Quidditch broom, or a joke about how ''un''-flat his messy hair was
* ''He come groovin' up slowly'' - James was cool, and carried himself with an attitude
* ''He got joo-joo eyeball'' - His glasses
* ''He one holy roller'' - Was a star in Quidditch, and later, considered a wizard war hero
* ''He got hair down to his knee'' - Exaggeration about James shaggy hair
* ''Got to be a joker he just do what he please'' - James was a mischievous prankster
Verse 2 is Sirius Black
* ''He wear no shoe-shine/He got toe-jam football'' - Refers to his alias, Pad''foot''
* ''He got monkey finger'' Sirius escaped Azkaban, and no one knows how
* ''He shoot Coca Cola'' - Double entendre: both the soda and the drug together refer to Sirius's implied drinking problem
* ''He say "I know you, you know me" - Harry is shocked to learn about his connection to Sirius
* ''One thing I can tell you is you got to be free'' - Sirius was wrongly imprisoned
Verse 3 is Remus Lupin
* ''He bad production'' - Remus has a serious issue he's trying to keep secret
* ''He got walrus gumboot'' - Werewolves...are vicious and have fangs...like a walrus...?
* ''He got oh-no side board'' - His wolf transformations that he must manage on the side of his school and career
* ''He one spinal cracker'' - His body undergoes painful changes
* ''He got feet down below his knee''- Despite his condition, he is a human being, and (usually) has feet, not paws
* ''Hold you in his armchair/arms yeah you can feel his disease'' - Being a werewolf is essentially a magical disease, but Tonks loves him anyway
Verse 4 is Peter Pettigrew
* ''He roller coaster''- Peter's inconsistent loyalty, or simply his weak emotions
* ''He got early warning'' - He was the first servant to return to Voldemort
* ''He got muddy water'' - Referring to what a "dirty rat" he is, in more way than one
* ''He one mojo filter'' - He puts his own well being before his friends and their families
* ''He say 1 and 1 and 1 is 3'' - Counting his number of former comrades he is betraying to his new master Voldemort
* ''Got to be good looking 'cause he's so hard to see'' - Stays hidden for 13 years disguised as a rat, and is wrongfully given a great reputation as a martyr in the wizarding world; in reality, he's not very talented and is a dirty little rat with nothing useful to offer anyone.

[[WMG: Dementors are not Native to the Wizarding World]]

While there are plenty of dangerous and outright horrifying magical creatures present throughout the series, Dementors still stand out. They're one of a relatively small number of creatures that lack parallels in folklore and mythology, there are few (if any) other EmotionEater species in the series' bestiary and, for most of the series, they seem to have a "wild" range restricted to a single small island in the North Sea. One that used to be the home of a dark wizard, Ekdrizdis, who built the fortress of Azkaban.

What, exactly, Ekrizdris was doing at Azkaban (other than trapping and horrifically murdering Muggles) is never described in depth. The people who first surveyed the island, after his poorly documented death, refused to describe whatever they found there. The place was just sealed off and left to molder until the community of witches and wizards in the UK opted to use it as a prison centuries later. No one wanted to risk offending the dark forces inhabiting it.

Had Ekrizdris just been performing sadistic torture or some set of cruel "experiments" there, then those who saw the results firsthand might not have been willing to go in-depth. They could have just left it at, "He was doing things I don't want to talk about to the people he captured", though. Whatever was going on at Azkaban in the 15th century really had to be ''dangerous'', not just unspeakably terrible, and it likely involved the origin of the future guard of the UK's sole wizard prison.

Ekrizdris might have been creating Dementors from his captives, which the people who investigated his fortress probably wouldn't have wanted to report for fear that someone might repeat it in hopes of building an army. More likely, though, he was ''importing'' them. The idea of alternate Universes never comes up in ''Harry Potter''. If they existed, though, at least one magic user would almost certainly find a way to bridge the gap between this world and one of its neighbors. Ekrizdris' descent into madness may have been born out of that. Neither his name, nor that of Azkaban, have obvious linguistic parallels in the area where he set up shop. He could have easily taken both from whatever plain he drew the Dementors from.

If the discoverers of Azkaban found out about a (thankfully closed) doorway to a place where Dementors were widespread, ''of course'' they wouldn't want to reveal that to the world at large. Better just to pretend that it never existed and take the secret with them to their graves, than to risk someone reopening that gate and letting something even worse through.

[[WMG: Harry isn't hearing his worst memory when he's near Dementors -- he's hearing Voldemort's]]

Since we find out in Book 7 that a part of Voldemort's soul is in Harry, we may very well be hearing Voldy's version of that night in the Potter house. There is no doubt that the worst moment in Voldy's life (at this point in the series) happened when he tried to kill Harry, and the part of his soul didn't latch onto Harry until he used Avada Kedavra on him. In addition:

* Harry was one year old at the time, so it's unlikely he remembers this in such detail;
* The narration of the memory (specifically in Chapter 12) is very similar to the narration in Chapter 17 of Book 7;
* In Chapter 1 of Book 5, Harry hears a new memory -- the night of Voldemort's return -- when the Dementors approach.
