Context Trivia / DotHack

* {{Defictionalization}}:
** ''.hack//Fragment'' is an online multiplayer game, essentially bringing ''The World'' to the real world.
** There's also several fan games that attempt to recreate, or pay homage to, the World. The results are with limited success for one reason or another.
** There are Rainmeter themes that recreate Altimit OS, even to the point of having clickable, animated icons.
* GodDoesNotOwnThisWorld: Much like with its sister series ''VideoGame/LittleTailBronx'', this is the main reason why [=CyberConnect2=] hasn't done much with the series as it's entirely owned by Bandai Namco Entertainment. The vice president of [=CyberConnect2=] [[https://noisypixel.net/cyberconnect2-wants-to-remake-original-dot-hack-games-needs-fan-requests-bandai-namco/ even told fans]] [[SendingStuffToSaveTheShow to contact Bandai Namco to convince them to bring the series back]].
* KeepCirculatingTheTapes: Besides ''[[UpdatedRerelease Last Recode]]'' bringing the G.U. games to modern audiences as a surprise release, the near-entirety of the franchise is stuck in their original formats on their respective consoles, as regular [=DVDs=], mangas or books or light novels, and so forth. Not only did games like ''Quarantine'' have a very limited release run which makes it prohibitively expensive, trying to watch the ''Liminality'' episodes in their original format is nigh impossible without owning the DVD copies personally, and [[CrackIsCheaper good luck getting those packed together with their respective games.]] Combine this with how next to nothing after G.U. [[NoExportForYou came overseas]], and it's unreasonably difficult for people to access most of the series without emulation and questionably-legal methods.
* NoExportForYou: ''.hack//frägment'' an online RPG version (not to be confused with an MMO) that allows custom created characters on a playable online server. Also .hack//Link, .hack//Versus.... Pretty much anything released after the G.U. Saga wrapped up never got released outside Japan aside from a couple of [=OVAs=], and a manga adaptation of ''[=LINK=]''.
* TechnologyMarchesOn:
** Look at the "Pluto's Kiss" backstory at the main page and laugh at how implausible that is. Even moreso that it is said to be made by a preteen as a prank. Even [[TabletopGame/CyberPunk DataKrash]] has a far more plausible explanation, being it's written by an expert.
** ALTIMIT OS is being "designed in such a way that it could avoid being infected by viruses" and thus being mandated to be used for all new computers by the "World Network Commission". Even with the concern of security, a wholly closed-source operating system being mandated for use with computers worldwide is generally unthinkable both then and now, in ethical and financial reasons. Even Windows nowadays has a few but significant portion of its components being open-source and Mac incorporates parts of Unix kernel into its system.
* TheOtherDarrin: Balmung was voiced by Creator/DougErholtz in the first game of the original tetralogy. He is voiced by Creator/CrispinFreeman from ''Mutation'' onwards. This is in cutscenes only, however; Erholtz' voice is still used for battle vocals. Evidently they recorded them before Erholtz was replaced.
