Grandmother and Raven return (in cameo) in the first part of "The Gathering".

!!This Episode contains the following Tropes
* ArtisticLicense: Although Natsilane is a member of the Haida nation, during the battle against Raven he is dressed like a stereotypical "Plains Indian" chief, very different from traditional Haida garb. This is an error due to Critical Research Failure on the part of the character model designer, which Greg Weisman would like to correct in any future circumstances.
* BellyMouth: The Thunderbird that Grandmother transforms herself into has a second, more humanoid, mouth in its mid section.
* CreepyCrows: Raven is one of Oberon's Children and a more malicious version of the Native American trickster hero, able to change into a human, raven, or raven-headed gargoyle.
* Foreshadowing: In Gargoyles 2198, Raven's lie about there being a gargoyle clan on Queen Florence Island will become truth.
* GoodOldWays: Grandmother is insistent that Natsilane must fulfill his traditional obligations, however he may disdain the supernatural.
* HeroicLineage: The reason that Natsilane has to be the one to fight Raven is because his paternal family line is responsible for kicking him out every generation. His father did this and so did his grandfather.
* InstantExpert: Natsilane defeated Raven, a Child of Oberon, in his first battle ever, despite knowing nothing about magic and combat. Granted, his magical relics did most of the work. Raven clearly has much more skill than he does.
* MagicalNativeAmerican: Both Grandmother and Raven have this motif, given that Raven is apparently this 'verse's version of the real life mythological trickster figure, and Grandmother acts the part with her herbal medicines. Though considering that they are Children of Oberon, their ability to channel magic naturally is justified. Natsilane, on the other hand, is a zigzagged example in that he is a Harvard educated college graduate who has a disbelief in the supernatural at first, but manages to fight the trickster Raven after embracing his heritage.
* ManipulativeBastard: Raven, fittingly given that he well known for being TheTrickster in many Native American myths, manages to fool Goliath and Angela into believing that Grandmother is a malevolent sorceress and he is a persecuted gargoyle.
* TheMasquerade: In this case, one detail about the Children of Oberon is revealed in this episode. Grandmother mentions that they are prohibited from directly interfering with mortals, hence why she tries unsuccessfully to show herself as a sea monster and thunderbird to Natsilane on two different occasions to get him believing in the stories of his people rather than tell him directly.
* ModestyBedsheet: Elisa while she rests in bed to recover from hypothermia.
* SeaMonster: One of them attacks the the ship of Goliath and his friends at the beginning of the episode. It looks like a draconic serpent with four bird-like limbs. It is revealed to be a shapeshifted Grandmother.
* ShoutOut: ShoutOut/ToShakespeare. Elisa Maza quotes the famous line from Theatre/Hamlet, "There are more things in heaven and earth..." - bringing yet another piece of Shakespeare into Gargoyles.
* Thunderbird: Grandmother adopts the form of one in order to convince Natsilane of just what kinds of dangerous magical beings inhabit the world. Unfortunately, the heroes interrupt the attempt, having just been told that she was not to be trusted.
* UnderestimatingBadassery: Raven didn't think much of Natsilane, a college student with no experience with the supernatural or being a chief. Despite some initial hesitation, Natsilane is brave enough to confront him and continue fighting after losing the first round, which is when his relics kick in.
