A HeavyMetal band based in Phoenix, Arizona and formed by former Music/{{Sepultura}} frontman Max Cavalera, Soulfly began as a [[GenreMashup genre stew]], mixing elements of GrooveMetal, AlternativeMetal, NuMetal, ThrashMetal and world music, including {{Reggae}}. The band moved away from the initial NuMetal influence, placing more emphasis on GrooveMetal for the albums ''3'' and ''Prophecy'', but has since returned to Cavalera's ThrashMetal roots.

Partly owing to his reason for leaving Sepultura and forming this band was the death of Cavalera's stepson and best friend, Dana Wells. Other tragedies in Cavalera's life followed; the death of [[Music/{{Snot}} Lynn Strait]] resulted in Cavalera contributing to the Snot tribute ''Strait Up'', and during the recording of Soulfly's fifth album, ''Dark Ages'', [[Music/{{Pantera}} Dimebag Darrell Abbott]] was shot to death during a concert, and Cavalera's eight-month-old grandson Moses unexpectedly died due to health complications.

[[RevolvingDoorBand The band has gone through numerous line-up changes over the years]], with the only consistent member being Max Cavalera. In addition to the line-up changes, a lot of Soulfly's music is collaboration-based, and built to accommodate a great deal of guest appearances.

!!Tropes for a tropes:

%%* AlternativeMetal: Not so much recently, but a very, very straight example early on.%%
%%* BigFun: Max when he connects to the fans during concert.
* DarkerAndEdgier: Soulfly's first albums (at least up to ''Prophecy'') had a tribal/world music-influenced groove metal sound, and most of the songs were about spirituality, though had some aggressive moments. Starting with ''Dark Ages'', the music started to tend towards thrash metal and death metal, and incorporated new lyrical themes like war, religion, slavery, politics... and left the spiritual themes behind.
* DoomMetal: "Intervention" started as a typical thrash/death song, then it progresses into a mid-paced GrooveMetal, eventually slowed down to doom metal.
* GenreMashup: Soulfly's albums usually feature some kind of HeavyMetal mixed with instrumentation and musical cues [[WorldMusic from different parts of the world]]. {{Reggae}}, flamenco, tribal music, salsa, and even CountryMusic sometimes show up here and there. Their sound from ''Dark Ages'' onward has been a bit more coherent, but still fairly experimental, mixing groove metal, death metal, and thrash metal, with whichever one of the three taking the most prominence depending on the song.

%%* HeavyMetal
%%* IAmTheBand: Max Cavalera.
* MetalScream: Max utilizes a Type 1, sometimes a Type 2 or 3.
* NewSoundAlbum: The band's first four albums were essentially a NuMetal / GrooveMetal hybrid, with world music influence and even AlternativeMetal influence. Starting with ''Dark Ages'', the band shifted into a ThrashMetal / DeathMetal sound, similar to Music/{{Sepultura}}'s early material, which they've stuck with since.
%%* NuMetal: In addition to the groove metal and thrash metal elements.
* ProtestSong: The bulk of their songs, especially from ''Dark Ages'' onward, are political in nature.
* ReligionRantSong: Most of the songs about religion are actually anti-religious (but still pro-God).
%%* SpecialGuest: Their first four albums (particularly their NuMetal albums) were [[{{Trivia/Soulfly}} scattered with guest appearances]]. Even the ThrashMetal album ''Omen'' featured a couple of guests.
%%* ThrashMetal
