Perfume commercials have a tough task to complete; they're advertising through [[{{MediaNotes/Television}} a medium]] that cannot possibly convey their product's ''sole feature'': the smell. The solution, such as it is, is to create an association with 'raw' human desire, elegance, beauty, and wealth via [[TrueArtIsIncomprehensible incomprehensible art]]. When executed well, it looks like a glamorous clothing commercial; when done poorly, they may [[DesignStudentsOrgasm fall prey to]] [[WhatWereTheySellingAgain not having anything to]] [[DadaAd do with the product.]]

Car adverts can be prone to this too, if they're selling the experience and lifestyle implied by driving the car instead of the engineering. Perhaps because of this, a good many TV shows take a liking to parodying these commercials.

* The UrExample may be the [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dx3Na_7inPI "Share the Fantasy" ad]] for Chanel No. 5, directed by Ridley Scott back in 1979.
* The TropeCodifier is likely a string of ads in the late Eighties and early Nineties for the Calvin Klein fragrance [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1m28PqHYans&ab_channel=FYI "Obsession."]] Equal parts MindScrew and SoapOpera level melodrama, they are probably the reason why so many of the parodies are one-word emotion-based titles, like ''Depression'' and ''Compulsion'' mentioned below.
* {{Subverted}} by Korean Air's "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H4yI2rhTZ2U Color of Perfection]]" spot. Coded as a perfume ad verging on [[DesignStudentsOrgasm Design Student's Orgasm]] -- they even show people spraying perfume -- it originally used [[http://frankoswald.com/mental-shavings/2007/8/20/is-korean-air-the-tiffany-of-airlines.html Tiffany's trademarked blue color -- immediately noticed by perceptive consumers as well as ad execs]] and were subsequently forced to change it slightly. Music by Robert Matt. Many viewers probably still don't realize it's about an airline.
* Parodied in a Australian commercial for ''mutton'' (of all things), done as a stereotypical perfume commercial for the new scent: Lâmb.
* [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PKFtCIPjz18 A commercial for the Georgia Lottery]] does this. It seems to be a perfume commercial, complete with being DeliberatelyMonochrome and with emotional dialogue, only to cut to the to main people fighting over the lottery ticket.
* [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hwhZ306bP7Y The commercial for Cacharel's Eden]] is about what you'd expect - androgynous creatures flitting around a leafy CGI paradise, and about three metric tons of FemaleGaze. But in Luca Turin's words: "Perfume journalists are still talking about the 1994 launch, which took place in some sort of aircraft hangar near Paris and involved a large artificial island surrounded by water, covered in real jungle, and populated by naked adolescents of both sexes. I'd tell you more, but I wasn't there."
* Made fun of by Creator/AlanCumming for Cumming the Fragrance, called by one blogger "the only celebrity fragrance that has a sense of humor." [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nmdJEjJxYOY He even adorably cracks up laughing at the end.]]
* Played completely straight in a 2014 [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZ1XM9LwS64 commercial]] for Dior's J'adore perfume featuring Creator/CharlizeTheron -- strutting through a sumptuously decorated baroque hallway in a [[EverythingsBetterWithSparkles glittering]] [[PimpedOutDress golden dress]] and sky-high heels, she approaches a rotunda where a length of champagne silk tumbles from an oculus several stories above. Discarding her shoes, she begins to climb the silken rope in a sensuous manner. The train of her dress inexplicably grows longer as she climbs. As she nears the top of the rope, she [[RippingOffTheStringOfPearls rips off a string of champagne pearls]] that clatter to the ground as she climbs through the oculus into a [[ShiningCity city of glass skyscrapers]] that glow with the diffuse light of sunset. Closeup on a bottle of perfume as the sun sets.
* Glaxo Smith Kline earned themselves a fair amount of notoriety in 2010 with [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mz4Bm_YqqPc this charming little gem]]. Attracted by shimmering lights appearing from nowhere, a woman looks up from her book, climbs a long staircase and enters an upstairs room where the lights swirl enchantingly around her, eventually disclosing a tiny bottle that spins in midair to reveal its name... CERVICAL CANCER. Then they apologize for having got your attention with such a cheap trick.
* Ads for Guerlain's "La Petite Robe Noire" ("The LittleBlackDress") are made of black animated {{Sexy Silhouette}}s and emphasize the GayParee and EiffelTowerEffect tropes, combined with "These Boots Are Made For Walking" by Music/NancySinatra for the soundtrack.
* Parodied in a 2020 political ad by the People for UsefulNotes/BernieSanders movement: [[https://web.archive.org/web/20200202073931/https://thepeoplesperfume.com/ Bérnié,]] "The People’s Perfume".

[[folder:Fanfic]]
* With Adrien being a model, it is hardly surprising that there are ''WesternAnimation/MiraculousLadybug'' fics on the subject (in addition to Canon):
** ''[[https://archiveofourown.org/works/5743525 Now Kiss]]'' by [[https://archiveofourown.org/users/KrazyKyStaHatter KrazyKyStaHatter]] has Adrien forced to pair up with Marinette for one instead of the planned model.
** ''[[https://archiveofourown.org/works/18959446 Lipstick]]'' by [[https://archiveofourown.org/users/TheNovelArtist TheNovelArtist]] has Marinette preparing Adrien for such an ad... which requires him to be thoroughly covered in lipstick marks.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Film -- Animation]]
* ''WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyANewGeneration'': ''Parfum la Pipp'', an artsy-fartsy black and white commercial of Pipp trotting along the beach and smiling at the camera before flying onto an oversized perfume bottle.
--> '''French Narrator''': "Zis prinzess smells. So could you."
%%* ''WesternAnimation/{{Tangled}}'': [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2JQ_bxt9trg Smolder by Flynn]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Film -- Live-Action]]
* ''Film/Boomerang1992'': The eccentric fashionista played by Creator/GraceJones stars in a perfume ad in which she noisily gives birth to a perfume bottle amid a jungle of flames.
* ''Film/GrumpyOldMen'' suggests that perfume ads "don't describe the perfume, but do adequately describe the state of your mind if you drink some".
* ''Film/StarTrek2009'': It caused three novelty perfumes/colognes to be created: [[TheKirk Tiberius]], [[MateOrDie Pon Farr]], and {{Red Shirt}}. [[http://trekmovie.com/2009/03/04/trek-spring-collection-preview-first-look-at-genki-star-trek-fragrances/ Even the bottles are amusing.]]
* ''Film/{{Perfume}}'' is about a homicidal perfumer with the smell equivalent of perfect pitch and is essentially a perfume commercial dragged out into a feature film. When Creator/DustinHoffman's character, a master perfumer, smells the main character's first perfume, his surrounding transforms into a rose garden and a sultry Gypsy woman walks up to kiss him.
* ''Film/{{Looker}}'' opens with a commercial for Ravish perfume, with the woman in the commercial talking to a MagicMirror.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Literature]]
* Creator/RogerZelazny's novel ''Isle of the Dead'' has a man from the 20th century living in the 25th. He's meeting a woman for dinner; she enters the room and falls into "a perfume-ad pose". You know immediately what he's talking about.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Live-Action TV]]
* ''Series/SaturdayNightLive'' has a history of parodying fragrance commercials:
** One was a ParodyCommercial for [[NoCelebritiesWereHarmed Calvin Kleen's]] ''Compulsion'' (a household cleaner) that heavily mocked the TrueArtIsIncomprehensible aspect.
** A 2017 skit of theirs adopted a more political bent when it introduced ''Complicit'', a new fragrance specifically for Ivanka Trump.
--> '''Narrator''': Every man knows her name. Every woman knows her face. When she walks into a room, all eyes are on her. She's Ivanka. And a woman like her deserves a fragrance all her own.... Because she's beautiful. Because she's powerful. Because she's -- ''complicit''...\
Complicit, the fragrance for the woman who can stop all this, but won't. Also available in cologne for Jared.
* ''Series/TheDailyShow'' did one in mocking the Obamas' date to New York City with a perfume ad for "POTUS: For Men".
* One of ''Series/TheColbertReport'''s early "products" was "Stephen Colbert's ''Scorn''." His Formula 401 ("premium man-seed") is also advertised in the pretentious-beauty-product style.
* During the 4th season of ''Series/ABitOfFryAndLaurie'', the opening credits parodied this.
-->[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hbe6zAjqOhY “Between desire and reality . . . A BIT . . . between fact and breakfast . . . madness lies, lies, lies . . . a bit . . . I hate you, I hate you and yet . . . I hate you. . . . Love, rage, and angst of the ear. Pretension . . . by Fry & Laurie.”]]
* Celebrity fragrance ads were dissected and parodied on an Infomania episode. [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRwX3QPbMvA C-List: The new fragrance from Conor Knighton. "I'll get there someday."]]
* ''Series/HannahMontana'' featured an episode where she does a [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9KSskUH9mg perfume commercial]], telling viewers that the fragrance "completes the circle", and involving her standing in front of a picture frame with a pair of gymnasts rolling behind her.
-->'''Lilly''': Hey, who are these guys?\
'''Miley''': I think they're the circle.
* ''Series/ImpracticalJokers'': In one of the games, [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mIMW4cXSHug the jokers are playing as workers for perfume companies workshopping the ad campaigns.]][[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxqtzPy0mTI The ads are meant to be unappealing and undesirable, and the jokers have to make a hard sell for the product.]] The brands include... [[note]] The second video includes references to unused ideas.[[/note]]
** [[CompensatingForSomething Eau Ver Compensate: Tiny Package, Big Smell.]] The product name is pronounced [[PretentiousPronunciation in a bad French way.]]
** Mother's Musk: Back to the Womb: The hypothetical commercial has [[NotHelpingYourCase a bottle of perfume coming out a woman's Vagina.]]
** [[OrphansOrdeal Orphan:]] Foster your Essence.
** [[{{Gasshole}} Cropdust: Just Did It.]] The ad shows [[LiteralMinded an image of an actual cropdusting plane over a field.]]
* ''Series/TheGruenTransfer'' once noted that if you ever find yourself watching an ad and have no idea what its premise is or what product its advertising, its almost certainly a perfume ad.
* The Series 3 intro for ''Series/ABitOfFryAndLaurie'' parodies perfume commercials. The opening credits sequence is in black and white with lots of blurry closeups of random objects, while Fry murmurs MeaninglessMeaningfulWords. The sequence ends with "''Pretension'' -- by Fry and Laurie".
* Marvelously sent up in ''Series/TheChasersWarOnEverything'' with 'WNKRY' (pronounced [[UsefulNotes/AustralianRulesFootball Wayne Carey]]).
* In the Mother's Day episode of ''Series/EverybodyHatesChris'', Rochelle watches a commercial for ''Pure Voodoo'' perfume and says to her family that's what she wants for the holiday. The commercial itself had several random clips that made no sense, and each family member thinks that Rochelle was referring to one of the objects that were featured in said clips, with Chris' being "an exploding chandelier".
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Music]]
* One of the fake commercials in the video for Music/NeilYoung's "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KSSvzCNBvlQ This Note's For You]]". ("Forgive me, but I'm prettier than all of you." "Liar! Give me back my shoes!")
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Stand-Up Comedy]]
* Creator/RobinWilliams' famous 2002 ''Live on Broadway'' routine contains a bit where (in the midst of a rambling discussion of Christianity's foibles) he makes fun of celebrity-backed fashion lines by saying how Mother Teresa never had a perfume:
-->Mother Teresa never had a line of products, she never had her own perfume, ''*changes voice to sound like the Calvin Klein Obsession guy*'' Compassion by Mother Teresa... ''*changes voice again to sound like a parody of Mother Teresa*'' I smell because I care ''*changes voice yet again to sound like the Calvin Klein Obsession guy again*'' Compassion...
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Webcomic]]
* ''Webcomic/{{Housepets}}'' had a brief story arc about some characters trying to produce a dog food commercial and the final result ended up being in this style due to lack of time and budget.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Web Video]]
* ''WebVideo/TwistedTranslations'' parodies these in it's "Badly Translated Beauty Commercials" video with the fake perfume "[[MemeticMutation Gradually Watermeloned]]"
* ''[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CndIfFKmZfk POOTUS by Demo]]'' takes an actual perfume commercial and replaces the starring princess with an insane, drunk [[VideoGame/TeamFortress2 Demoman]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Western Animation]]
* Mocked in ''WesternAnimation/TheSimpsons'' with an ad exec's "retooled" version of The Mr. Plow commercial. It's a black and white, impressionistic mess reminiscent of many of the PerfumeCommercial tropes.
* In the 8th episode of ''WesternAnimation/SheepInTheBigCity'', Sheep becomes famous for being on a commercial for Spotless dish soap that's an obvious perfume commercial parody
* ''WesternAnimation/{{Rugrats}}'' had a scene where Angelica is playing make believe that she is in a perfume ad, wearing a long flowing dress while walking down a fancy hallway.
* ''WesternAnimation/TheWeekenders'' showed Tish contemplating what a commercial product named after her would be like. Cue her standing in a dress for a perfume called "Tish" "''Ah, the scent of me.''"
* ''WesternAnimation/TinyToonAdventures'' had a perfume commercial parody starring [[SmellySkunk Fifi La Fume]] for [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJZL3O1PcpY "Calvin Acme's Depression".]]
* From ''WesternAnimation/PinkyAndTheBrain'', there's Brain's commercial for "Subjugation". Pinky's shenanigans ruin the effect.
* In one ''WesternAnimation/CodenameKidsNextDoor'' episode, the operatives are having a science fair and one (stereotypically French) group advertises their entry with one of these. The judge has literally no idea what it's supposed to mean.
* ''WesternAnimation/TheClevelandShow'''s episode "Wide World of Cleveland Show" featured "No" by [[WesternAnimation/FamilyGuy Consuela]].
* The ''WesternAnimation/MiraculousLadybug'' episode [[Recap/MiraculousLadybugS02E11Gorizilla Gorizilla]] has a video of Adrien starring in one as a RunningGag.
