This is something of a fashionable and stylistic approach in visual media. Overwhelmingly, these designs are made with vector graphics, to create solid areas of colour with crisp, geometrically neat outlines. Usually involves vivid colours over a monochrome background (white has preference as a neutral colour, but it can easily be black). The colour patterns can also be switched for the negative space, while the solid colour becomes the foreground. It's easier to show than to describe, hence the picture. Look for examples of this rather abstract art in commercials and opening credits. In animated works, designs may flow outwards from a central point, gaining variety and complexity as they grow.

Peaked in popularity during the late 2000s, as part of a larger trend towards humanist, maximalist computer-aided graphic design in that decade. "[[https://aesthetics.fandom.com/wiki/Frutiger_Metro Frutiger Metro]]" is an alternate term coined in the early 2020s.

Compare this visual trope to the literary-only PurpleProse. Failure to maintain focus on the product can result in WhatWereTheySellingAgain Video versions of this trope might employ {{Blipvert}} as well. Contrast AsceticAesthetic, FaceOnTheCover & MinimalisticCoverArt (although this can also be done in a very striking and artistic way).

* The "dream" sequences of ''Anime/BlackRockShooter'' are basically this, complex designs and scenarios, with lots of color motifs and use of CGI. All employed to illustrate the conflicts of the main characters.
%%* The opening to ''Anime/{{Tsuritama}}'', complete with dancing silhouettes a la iPod commercials.
* The [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VyYCYd2wHY4 opening]] and [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewICfFjc4CI closing]] sequences of ''Literature/TheTatamiGalaxy'''s anime adaptation. 81%%* The [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJsjla9X0ng opening]] of ''Anime/CControl'' and many aspects of the show itself: anything relating to the Financial District, really.
%%* The [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oAXrRWLKzko opening]] of ''Anime/ErgoProxy''. ''Very'' David Carson.
%%* ''Anime/{{Penguindrum}}'' might be one of the winners of this trope. While the entire anime builds off symbols and patterns, it doesn't get more stylized than the [[http://vimeo.com/44126386 transformation sequence]]. And ''how.''
* A short but cute anime video [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqaXxSBZTZc of Superflat First Love]] has strong elements of this.
* ''Anime/SummerWars'' has OZ, a social internet platform of sorts. It is [[https://moeisthebest.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/summer-wars-101.jpg a gigantic cat head with a headless bird on top and plenty of rainbow coloured book cases circling around it.]] Needless to say that almost every scene in OZ is just one big Design Student wet dream, even when [[spoiler:it becomes corrupted]].
* ''Anime/DevilmanCrybaby'' features many such scenes, but one that stands out is the Sabbath rave in the first episode, with bright colors against a dark background and OffModel animations that give the scene a psychedelic vibe.

%%[[folder:Comic Books]]
%%* Creator/DaveJohnson, cover artist of ''ComicBook/OneHundredBullets'', is fond of this. That's part of the reason why he's in such high demand as a cover artist. He can even do this when drunk.
%%* ComicBook/DallasBarr is drawn by an interior designer. It really shows in scenes at the office of Lord Stileman, which among other things includes a stylised river.

%%* Sometimes standard playing cards fit into this category, and [[http://www.flickr.com/photos/46049718@N00/2958138461 this]] Flogging Molly poster took this and went with it.
%%* Your average deck of [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanafuda hanafuda]] (Japanese playing cards). The standard western set of cards only gets fancy for the face cards and the ace of spades. Hanafuda have twelve suits of four and each suit has a different motif, and numbers are represented graphically rather than with numerals. Confused yet?

[[folder:Films -- Animation]]
* ''WesternAnimation/TheThiefAndTheCobbler:'' Everything is extremely stylized to the point of being super weird. Lots of AmazingTechnicolorPopulation, UnmovingPlaid and DerangedAnimation. What makes this more amazing was that this was done ''without'' CGI.
* In ''WesternAnimation/{{Coraline}}'', the other world starts to look like this -- geometrical, sometimes fractal trees rendered in black and white -- the further you go away from the house. [[spoiler:The house itself turns into Design Student's Orgasm once the Other World starts to fall apart.]]
%%* ''WesternAnimation/BoyAndTheWorld'' goes back and forth between stark minimalism and this trope.
%%* The opening credits to ''WesternAnimation/MonstersInc''.
%%* ''WesternAnimation/{{The Adventures of Tintin|2011}}'''s opening credits, which are also animated in a different style than the actual film.
* ''WesternAnimation/SpiderManIntoTheSpiderVerse'' becomes very colorful and abstract whenever different universes collide.
* ''Franchise/GhostInTheShell'' is well known for the incredible visuals and soundtrack in all its anime adaptations, but ''[[Anime/GhostInTheShell1995 Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence]]'' cranks it up. At the arrival at Etorofu with the incredible plane scene, the film turns into half an hour of X-rated SceneryPorn.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Films -- Live-Action]]
* ''Film/JamesBond'' films often have very strange opening credits. Most feature a design motif related to the preceding scene or with the plot of the movie, and many feature scantily clad (if not entirely nude, in silhouette) women dancing to the film's particular theme. They became even more elaborate when they ShiftedToCGI.
%%* The opening credits of ''Film/CasinoRoyale2006'' had a love affair with this trope, with a [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kg5lI6NCBxE playing card theme]]. And it ''[[Administrivia/TropesAreTools rocked]]''.
%%* ''Film/CatchMeIfYouCan'''s credits.
%%* The credits to ''Film/HollowMan''.
* ''Film/StrangerThanFiction'' visualizes Harold's number obsessed subconscious by having numbers, graphs, and equations pop up, fall down, or move along with him. [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDwTQ57YyzI You can see the opening here.]]
%%* ''Film/AeonFlux'' is set in a utopia whose creative design gave many an art student a big O.
%%* The opening credits of ''Film/TheGoodTheBadAndTheUgly''.
%%* The animation in ''Literature/AScannerDarkly'' counts.
%%* Much of the film ''Film/TheCell'' is like this.
%%* Anything by Tarsem. ''Film/TheFall'' is an even better example.
* ''Film/StarTrekTheMotionPicture'' features a distractingly fancy and lengthy transporter effect, far more extreme than any of the other movies or the shows. The film also has lengthy lavish depictions of a space cloud.
%%* ''Film/TronLegacy'' seems to be going for this as the movie's overall style.
%%* The opening credits of ''Film/TheGirlWithTheDragonTattoo2011''. So much.
%%* Film/TheTreeOfLife trailers. So much.
%%* [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5eLg6ZxFDm4 The opening credits]] of ''Film/TheIslandOfDrMoreau1996''.
* The "past" poster of ''Film/TheLastWitchHunter'' is rather baroque, incorporating dozens upon dozens of inerwoven, intricate details, each of them somehow referencing witchcraft as depicted in the film.
%%* ''FilmGuardiansofTheGalaxyVol2"'s scenes on Ego. Every square millimeter of space is absolutely covered in colorful flowers and filagreed sculptures. It is absolutely breathtaking.
* ''{{Film/Precious}}'' has several posters where the artist was allowed to create a very abstract or impressionist style of an overweight woman's silhouette.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Literature]]
* Creator/IsaacAsimov:
** ''Literature/TheBicentennialManAndOtherStories'': The 1990 {{Creator/Gollancz}} cover has a white/grey pattern for the most part, with an enormous metal man lying down on the floor with sliding doors into their head where you can see a dusk-like sky, and skinny human figures made of solid colour are standing around with shadows. [[http://www.isfdb.org/wiki/images/7/76/THBCNTNNLM1990.jpg Pretty weird]].
** ''Literature/TalesOfTheBlackWidowers'' has been published with multiple covers. One of the covers features a large spider, with seven human faces (one for each of the members) instead of eyes.
* ''Literature/DasZeitfahrrad'': Curves and maybe circles are a recurring theme of the cover art, but why? Perhaps because "Das Zeitfahrrad" translates to "the time bike", but you could be forgiven for not realizing that the odd machine on the cover was supposed to be a sort of bicycle. It certainly doesn’t seem to have any wheels.

[[folder:Live-Action TV]]
%%* The current (as of 2009) [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHpgvKwmuFU BBC News]] titles seem to have elements of this, at the very least they are rather "over designed".
%%** They have nothing on the [[http://www.lambie-nairn.com/work/case_study/nos titles]] for the Dutch news organization NOS, whose graphics are done by the same people behind those for BBC News.
* Creator/{{MTV}}'s [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1MOm1WhHH3M bumps and indents]] had plenty of this, combined with DerangedAnimation. Even the live-action ones!
%%* ''Series/HumanTarget'' has a variation on this. It's loosely based on a comic book, so the black & white vector graphics are mixed in with primary colors "dripping" onto the screen like ink dripping onto a page.
* The [[http://www.canadiandesignresource.ca/officialgallery/graphics/vancouver-2010-graphic-identity/ Vancouver Olympics]] graphics. There's spray paint, clip art, and origami-style patterns in them. The colors are springtime-y, but Vancouver's actually like that in February so that's understandable.
* The 2008 [[http://www.troika.tv/work/5.126 on-air look]] for Oxygen, of which the primary motif seems to be flying things (such as cell phones, lipstick, disco balls and even lips).
%%* The credits sequence of ''Series/MadMen'' is an example. It's very decently done, fits the cool InstrumentalThemeTune and is supposed to be apropos to [[TheSixties the time the show is set in]], same as in the case of ''Film/CatchMeIfYouCan''. Also, season four's sets match the the credits' visual style.
%%* The opening credits to ''Series/UnitedStatesOfTara.''
%%* The pop science mini-series ''[[Series/TopGear James May's]] Things You Need to Know'' runs on this. It's basically pop science + James May's posh narration + DesignStudentsOrgasm. High production values mean that it's still enjoyable even if you've heard everything before.
* ''Series/{{NTSFSDSUV}}'': There's an episode that partially spoofs ''Film/{{Skyfall}}'', complete with overly artistic Jamed Bond-esque opening credits.
* Expect these to show up in [[Series/TekkoukiMikazuki just]] [[Series/{{Garo}} about]] [[Series/ShougekiGouraigan anything]] made by Creator/KeitaAmemiya after the year 2000.
* The opening for ''Series/DirkGentlysHolisticDetectiveAgency'' definitely qualifies. Everything is moving phosphorus green or highlighter pink shapes on a black background.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Music]]
* Especially from the second half of the 1960s on, many album covers by rock bands and artists have become more artsy, especially by psychedelic and progressive rock bands. Art photographers, painters and designers were hired to provide beautifully crafted covers and gatefolds that had stunning visuals, lots of SceneryPorn, often the full lyrics, and sometimes even extra details and secret messages for the fans. This was a major reason many rock devotees mourned the decline of the vinyl record. You just can't do that kind of thing with a CD case.
* Music/{{Coldplay}}'s cover for ''Music/ARushOfBloodToTheHead'' looks very simple, but the photo was taken using a 3-D scanning machine and overlayed with various enhancements by the artist.
* Music/LizPhair's inside artwork for ''Music/ExileInGuyville'' was influenced by Lopez Tejera's 1952 album ''The Joys and Sorrows of Andalusia''. It even features polaroid shots of Liz and the management team, along with various other people.
* Music/TheBeatles:
** ''Music/WithTheBeatles'': The album cover by Robert Freeman shows the band members as four [[FloatingHeadSyndrome floating heads]] against a black background. It's simple, but so striking that countless bands have tried to imitate and parody it.
** ''Music/{{Revolver|Beatles Album}}'': a collage of various pictures mingled together with hand drawn portraits. The designer was Klaus Voormann, who would also create the collage posters on the cover of ''Music/TheBeatlesAnthology''.
** ''Music/SgtPeppersLonelyHeartsClubBand'', designed by Michael Cooper: a large collage of celebrity and more obscure photo cut-outs and wax statues together in an iconic background.
* Music/TearsForFears:
** After the relatively low-key album art for ''Music/TheHurting'' and ''Music/SongsFromTheBigChair'', the cover for ''Music/TheSeedsOfLove'' is an [[https://www.blackmagazin.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/TFF-Seeds-Of-Love-Cover-.jpg elaborate collage of paintings and props]] tying in with the album's denser, more organic sound and even more eclectic style.
** The album cover for ''Music/EverybodyLovesAHappyEnding'' is a digital painting depicting an elaborate totem pole of items and characters themed after each song on the tracklist.
* Creator/{{Hipgnosis}} and Storm Thorgerson were among the most famous AlbumCoverDesigners and are best known for their covers for Music/PinkFloyd. They made the psychedelic universe cover of ''Music/ASaucerfulOfSecrets'', the DrosteImage on ''Music/{{Ummagumma}}'', the rainbow prisma of ''Music/TheDarkSideOfTheMoon'' (which was drawn by graphic artist George Hardie), the businessmen shaking hands with a ManOnFire on ''Music/WishYouWereHere1975'', the countless beds on the beach on ''Music/AMomentaryLapseOfReason'' and the ambiguous faces on the cover of ''Music/TheDivisionBell''.
* The Designers Republic is known for incorporating ironic anti- and pro-corporate aesthetics into its art style, along with minimalist logos, symbols, and hidden text, a style that became associated with the Y2K design aesthetic of the 1990s and early 2000s. The studio has done work for artists like Music/{{Pulp}}, Music/{{Supergrass}}, Music/PopWillEatItself, Music/AphexTwin, and Music/{{Autechre}} on multiple occasions.
* Music/KingCrimson's album covers for ''Music/InTheCourtOfTheCrimsonKing'', ''Music/InTheWakeOfPoseidon'', and ''Lizard'' all consist of elaborate, sleeve-spanning paintings, while ''Islands'' depicts a photo of the Trifid Nebula, with all the ethereal detail that comes with it. Particularly noteworthy is ''Lizard'', whose cover was designed by Gini Barris. The name of the band is written in elaborate medieval lettering, and each letter incorporates depictions of scenes described in each song. The band has since stuck with simpler or outright minimalist album covers since.
* Music/DavidBowie:
** The album cover of ''Music/DiamondDogs'' was designed by famous Belgian pop art painter Guy Peellaert and shows Bowie and two other people as man-dog hybrids. Peellaert also did the cover of ''Music/ItsOnlyRockNRoll'' by Music/{{The Rolling Stones|Band}}.
** The album cover for ''Music/{{Tonight}}'' features an elaborate painting done up to look like an abstract stained-glass window, typing in with the opening track ("Loving the Alien") and its critique of religious dogma.
* Music/CaptainBeefheart painted several of his album covers himself, always in abstract, but very striking art: ''Music/ShinyBeast'' and ''Music/DocAtTheRadarStation''.
* Creator/AntonCorbijn has designed the album covers of Music/CaptainBeefheart's ''Music/IceCreamForCrow'', Music/{{REM}}'s ''Music/AutomaticForThePeople'', Music/{{U2}}'s ''Music/TheJoshuaTree'' and ''Music/AchtungBaby''.
* Creator/AndyWarhol was another world famous [[AlbumCoverDesigners album cover designer]], responsible for the iconic yellow banana on the cover of ''Music/TheVelvetUndergroundAndNico'' By Music/VelvetUnderground that could literally be ''peeled'' and the crotch shot on ''Music/StickyFingers'' by Music/{{The Rolling Stones|Band}} with a real-life zipper.
* The album cover of ''Music/AppetiteForDestruction'' by Music/GunsNRoses was first a painting by Robert Williams where a robot has just raped a girl. It was deemed too controversial and replaced by a shot of the band members as skeletons, painted by Billy White Jr.
* Music/DanielJohnston designs the covers of all his albums, including ''Music/YipJumpMusic'' and ''Music/HiHowAreYou''.
* Derek Riggs made a iconic painting of Music/IronMaiden's mascot Eddie the Head defeating the devil on the cover of ''Music/TheNumberOfTheBeast''.
* Mark Ryden's design of ''Music/{{Dangerous|Album}}'' by Music/MichaelJackson had a lot of surreal imagery and references to "The King of Pop" himself.
* While Peter Saville is generally better-known for his MinimalisticCoverArt, on a number of occasions he has done work in the opposite extreme:
** ''Music/UnknownPleasures'' by Music/JoyDivision is based on an image of radio waves from pulsar CP 1919, printed on hatch-textured pressboard stock.
** ''Music/MyLifeInTheBushOfGhosts'' by Music/BrianEno and Music/DavidByrne is an elaborate photo of abstract humanoid shapes swarming together. Saville created the picture by taping construction paper cutouts to a TV monitor that was hooked up to a camera, then pointing the monitor and the camera at one another to produce a feedback loop. Byrne praised the photo as a good visual analogy for the album's ''musique concrete'' style.
** ''Music/{{Republic}}'' by Music/NewOrder is a collage of stock images themed around Saville's residence in California at the time, tying in with the album's mock-commercial approach by looking like a tourism brochure.
* The album cover of ''Music/TheManMachine'' by Music/{{Kraftwerk}} was designed by group member Ralf Hütter himself and shows the band members in a pose and typography that resembles a Soviet propaganda poster. The album covers of ''Music/{{Autobahn}}'' (a POV shot from a car driving over the highway), ''Music/ComputerWorld'' (the band on a computer screen), and ''Music/TechnoPop'' (CGI renders of the band members' heads) are also notable for their graphics.
* Music/{{Queen|Band}}:
** The album cover of ''Music/{{News of the World|Queen}}'' is based on a painting by Frank Kelly Freas, an artist best known for painting scenes of science fiction stories. The image showed a giant intelligent robot holding a human corpse. The members of Queen asked Freas if he could paint the exact same image, only with them in place of the corpse.
** The album art for ''Music/{{Jazz|1978}}'', inspired by graffiti that Roger Taylor saw at the UsefulNotes/BerlinWall, depicts a series of rings inside another series of rings, with a row of cyclists at the bottom of the image. The background rings are closer together at the outer edges of the design, which gives the appearance of a frosted bubble at a distance. The back cover features a mirrored, mostly color-inverted version of the artwork (with the album title retaining its magenta color). A [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zoetrope zoetrope]] of cyclists also appears on the LP labels.
* Music/FrankZappa's albums also often had detail grabbing covers or covers with a visually striking image:
** ''Music/FreakOutAlbum'' and ''Music/HotRats'' use photographs in psychedelic and bright colors.
** ''Music/WereOnlyInItForTheMoney'' features Cal Schenkel's famous SgtPeppersShoutOut parody.
** ''Music/CruisinWithRubenAndTheJets'', ''Music/JustAnotherBandFromLA.'', ''Music/TheGrandWazoo'', ''Music/WakaJawaka'', and ''Ahead Of Their Time'' use Cal Schenkel's naïve cartoonish drawing style.
** ''Music/UncleMeat'', ''Music/BurntWeenySandwich'', and ''Tinseltown Rebellion'' use elaborate collage covers.
** ''Music/WeaselsRippedMyFlesh'' has Neon Park's design of man shaving himself with a weasel.
** ''Film/TwoHundredMotels'', ''Music/OverNiteSensation'', and ''Music/OneSizeFitsAll'' have richly-detailed paintings.
** ''Music/StudioTan'', ''Music/SleepDirt'', and ''Music/OrchestralFavorites'' use Gary Panter's designs.
* The album cover of ''Music/{{Abraxas|Album}}'' by Music/{{Santana}}, which is a 1961 painting by Mati Klarwein.
* Music/KurtCobain designed the album cover of ''Music/{{Incesticide}}'' and the back cover of ''Music/InUtero'' himself.
* Music/BobDylan also painted the portraits on the album covers of ''Music/SelfPortrait'' and ''Music/PlanetWaves'' themselves.
* The album cover of ''Music/LicensedToIll'' by Music/BeastieBoys was designed by World B. Omes (pseudonym of David Gambale) and features a Boeing 727, with the band name on the tail, crashing head-on into a mountain side.
* ''Music/PocketRevolution'' (2005) by Belgian band Music/{{dEUS}} features a CoolStarShip on the cover, designed by Don Lawrence, author of the comic strip ''[[ComicBook/StormDonLawrence Storm]]''.
* One of the reasons why Music/{{FX}} is still well-regarded in the K-Pop industry long after their hiatus is the album packaging for their albums ''Pink Tape'' and ''4 WALLS'' courtesy of graphic designer Min Hee-jin:
** The [[https://www.red-dot.org/project/fx-pink-tape-20762 award-winning album packaging and design]] for ''Pink Tape'' is shaped to look like a pink VHS tape containing a film. The photos inside the album's photobook even mimicks movie screencaps with breathtaking photography in the style of Creator/WongKarWai and Creator/SofiaCoppola, complete with subtitles. The album's packaging went on to influence album packaging design in the K-Pop industry ''in general.''
** ''4 WALLS'' is less flashy than ''Pink Tape'', but the minimalistic Swiss-inspired {{Retraux}} design and flashy blue-orange color scheme gave the album a stylish, sophisticated feel. Like ''Pink Tape'', it also [[https://ifdesign.com/en/winner-ranking/project/4-walls/179435 won an award]], albeit from a different awarding group.
* The iconic shot of Music/PattiSmith striking a Creator/FrankSinatra-like pose, with her CoatOverTheShoulder on ''Music/{{Horses}}'', was shot by her friend, famed photographer Creator/RobertMapplethorpe. In fact, ''all'' her album cover photos were by him, until his death from AIDS. The last photos he took for one of her records were for ''Dream of Life'' in early 1987. He died two years later.
* The album cover of ''Music/SongsAboutFucking'' by Music/BigBlack is done InTheStyleOf {{Manga}} art, featuring a woman gritting her teeth while in lordosis.
* The cover of ''Music/TheLowEndTheory'' by Music/ATribeCalledQuest shows a stylized black woman painted green and red.
* The black-and-white stylized portrait of Music/LouReed on the cover of ''Music/{{Transformer}}'', designed by Mick Rock and Klaus Voormann.
* The colorful cover of ''Music/VirusAlbum'' by Music/DoeMaar features four shots of a female model.
* The album cover of ''Music/PicturesAtAnExhibition'' by Music/EmersonLakeAndPalmer is literally a group of paintings in a museum.
* Music/LedZeppelin's first four albums are also very striking designs. ''[[Music/LedZeppelin1969 Led Zeppelin I]]'' features a shot of the Hindenburg disaster, ''Music/LedZeppelinII'' is a collage of the band, based on a picture of UsefulNotes/WorldWarI, ''Music/LedZeppelinIII'' is another collage cover and ''Music/LedZeppelinIV'' features a 19th century rustic painthing of an old man. ''Music/HousesOfTheHoly'' was designed by Creator/{{Hipgnosis}}.
* Music/TheGratefulDead were known for their psychedelic album covers, full with colorful and trippy abstract images, such as ''Music/AnthemOfTheSun'' and ''Music/AmericanBeauty''.
* Several of Music/JeanMichelJarre's album covers are surrealist paintings by Michel Granger. ''Music/{{Oxygene}}'' depicts the Earth as a skull, for which Jarre received official permission to use it. The album's follow-up, ''Music/{{Equinoxe}}'', likewise sports a specially commissioned painting by Granger depicting a massive audience staring at the viewer through binoculars. Meanwhile, ''Rendez-Vous'' features a painting of an anthropomorphic Earth cupping her hands to her mouth.
* The album cover of ''Music/{{Dookie}}'' is a very detailed drawing full with little humoristic scenes going on.
* Another way of using a design students' orgasm on your album cover is by literally using an actual iconic painting or statue. Since many of the artists have been dead for centuries you have the advantage of not having to pay any copyright.
** ''AudioPlay/AnotherMontyPythonRecord'' uses "The Census At Bethlehem" by Creator/PieterBruegelTheElder on its cover.
** ''Deep Purple'', the third album by Music/DeepPurple uses a black-and-white image of the "Hell" panel of Creator/HieronymusBosch's ''The Garden Of Earthly Delights'' on its cover. Music/DeadCanDance uses a small image from the second panel of the same painting on the cover of their album ''Aion''. The cover of Music/JohnZorn's "Chimeras" (2003) is a detail of the Creator/HieronymusBosch painting "The Last Judgment", a tryptich where only a fragment has survived.
** Music/JohnZorn's album "On the Torment of Saints, the Casting of Spells and the Evocation of Spirits" (2013) uses Creator/SalvadorDali's painting "Art/TheTemptationOfStAnthonyDali" on the cover.
** Music/JohnZorn's "Magick" (2004) has a drawing from Creator/GustaveDore on the cover.
%%* Many, many, ''many'' music videos fall under this trope, but the most JustForFun/{{egregious}} is by far TLC's "No Scrubs," based in a futuristic spaceship/something and has absolutely nothing to do with broke suitors.
* Most of Roger Dean's album covers for Music/{{Yes}} were depictions of lush psychedelic landscapes. ''[[http://mossyskull.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/tales_from_topographic_oceans.jpg Tales From Topographic Oceans,]]'' ''[[http://static3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20110514084056/rockband/images/4/48/Fragile.jpg Fragile]]'', and particularly ''[[http://wallpoper.com/images/00/29/88/40/music-snakes_00298840.jpg Relayer]]'' are probably most representative of this style. Also his album covers for {{Music/Asia}}. (The covers for ''Aqua'', ''Arena'', and ''Archiva'' were done by Rodney Matthews.)
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ky7Tq8laJo8 The beautifully done flying elephants]] which became a group logo for Osibisa - a TakeThat at slightly racist record company execs who snootily considered African music could never, ever, take off in the major markets of the West and any investment in a band based on African rhythm was a complete waste of money.
%%* Capsule's music video for their song, [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_nUbhbEp65s "JUMPER"]], consists largely of this.
%%* The video for [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ITLTAyrP10 Mariposas]] by the Argentine band ''Enanitos Verdes''.
%%* Music/GirlsGeneration's video for [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fSQwCK_8VSM Visual Dreams]].
%%* Gnarls Barkley's video for "Crazy".
%%* The [[http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/de/Iron_Maiden-Dance_of_Death.jpg cover]] for Music/IronMaiden's ''Dance of Death''
* Music/{{Mika}} is a huge fan of bright, colourful, [[TheSixties sixties-inspired]] visuals, which can be seen on most of the art for his albums and singles, as well as certain {{Animated Music Video}}s like [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6md5RSnVUuo "Lollipop"]] and [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RVmG_d3HKBA "Relax (Take It Easy)"]].
* The cover of Music/{{Maroon 5}}'s album ''Music/{{Overexposed}}'' [[https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/7/77/Maroon_5_-_Overexposed.png/220px-Maroon_5_-_Overexposed.png fits this trope to a tee.]]
%%* The [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZwhzf8NC4o&feature=fvwrel music video]] (2009 version) of ''99 Luftballons'' by Nena.
%%** Also, ''[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_CT2FZTThbE Du Bist So Gut Für Mich]]''
%%* The album cover of Music/PinkFloyd's ''Relics'' compilation is almost literally this, as the artist (drummer Nick Mason) studied architecture in university.
%%* [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yzC4hFK5P3g PONPONPON]] counts as this.
* Everything Music/StudioKillers does. [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uGjHsLnUO1U The music video]] for "Eros and Apollo" in particular, ranging from 2D art to 3D [=CGI=] and adding pixel art to the mix.

%%* The [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Zedd_Clarity.jpg cover]] for Zedd's album ''Clarity''.
* A number of covers for charity albums by the Creator/RedHotOrganization fit this trope, but the most JustForFun/{{egregious}} has to be [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Various_-_Red_Hot_%2B_Latin.jpg the rather creepy cover art for]] ''Silencio = Muerte: Red Hot + Latin''.
* Music/LittleXsForEyes's music video for their single [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dr0kOrzTYHU "Love Gets Lost"]] had the director recording several performances of the song by the band on a green screen and mixing the footage with a large variety of shapes and colors.
* Belarusian band Lyapis Trubetskoy [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m5qDsOmz-Yk music video Capital]] is a fine example.
* Basically anything Music/OKGo has done post-''Oh No'', but special mention goes to the videos for "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oL3qDpubXU8 The Writing's On the Wall]]", "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LgmxMuW6Fsc Obsession]]", and "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1ZB_rGFyeU I Won't Let You Down]]".

[[folder:Video Games]]
%%* The ''Wii Music'' [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wii_Music box art]].
%%* The opening to ''Music/TheBeatles: VideoGame/RockBand'' has a bit of this.
%%* The recent update to the Xbox 360's hardware and Xbox Live has a welcome video which is essentially this modeled around the Xbox logo.
%%* The design philosophy behind ''VideoGame/MirrorsEdge'' level design. Unlike most examples, it works surprisingly well, mostly by being a rare aversion of RealIsBrown and because you're running too fast to see the the details, anyway.
%%** Arguably a Deconstruction of the style, since the game takes place in a fascist police state. TakeThat, advertising industry.
%%* Much of Creator/YoshitakaAmano's concept art for ''VideoGame/FinalFantasy''.
%%* ''VideoGame/NoMoreHeroes'': Almost all of Travis Touchdown's shirts are like that.
%%* If ''VideoGame/Persona3'''s opening doesn't count, ''nothing does.''
%%** [[VideoGame/Persona3 Most]] [[VideoGame/Persona4 modern]] Persona games [[VideoGame/Persona1 and their remakes]] follow this with their openings. (''Especially Persona 1'' and ''Persona 3 Portable''.) The animators of the ''[[VideoGame/Persona2 Innocent Sin]]'' Remake just took this trope up a notch right [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D07mro7NOkA here]].
%%** ''[[UpdatedRerelease Persona 3 FES]]'' averts this with a "cool stuff montage" (with a hint of SpoilerOpening when it shows scenes from "The Answer").
%%* Eufloria is essentially this in game format.
* ''VideoGame/PixelJunkEden'' uses this almost exclusively, with copious amounts of wiggly, spiraling lines on an abstract patchwork background.
%%* ''VideoGame/DeBlob'' was literally made by art school students. Heck, the entire point of the game is to turn the city back into this.
* A lot of the gameplay in ''VideoGame/{{Audiosurf}}'' ends up looking like this, especially with the background color set to white, due to the graphics generation engine throwing [[EverythingDances dancing towers]] and colorful explosions around.
%%* Even {{eroge}} are feeling the effect of this trope. Just compare the opening videos for [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pDNKRm6ZFJQ the]] [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KrttnHOJAoM first]] [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oldGuGKkppw three]] ''[[{{Jiburiru}} Makai Tenshi Djibril]]'' games with those for the [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Co6Jw994xKo fourth]] and [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nGMzXiZgs_g&feature=related fifth]] games (All videos NSFW).
%%* ''VideoGame/ElShaddaiAscensionOfTheMetatron'' does this.
* The Japanese box art for the classic ''Franchise/SonicTheHedgehog'' games consists of sparse compositions featuring noisy, abstract shapes in loud primary colors, which serves to draw attention to the character art. For example, [[VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog1 the first game]] has [[https://images.nintendolife.com/56a63b5f9544a/jp.900x.jpg Sonic standing next to his name,]] in a haphazard arrangement on top of a yellow circle, with "beams" radiating from it like a sun. There's also motivational text in GratuitousEnglish: for the first game, it's "Don't just sit there and waste your precious time. If you want to do something, do it right away. Do it when you can. It's the only way to live a life without regrets." ''VideoGame/SonicGenerations'' features a similar aesthetic in reference to this, with the same abstract shapes and loud primary colors decorating its menu screens (and even its logo, to a lesser extent).
%%* ''VideoGame/DJHero'' and it's sequel incorporate this, more specifically the intro/title and loading screens.
* Any installments of ''VideoGame/{{Wipeout}}'' (1, 2097/XL, 3) that has designs by [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Designers_Republic The Designers Republic/tDR]] is this trope, with flashy and catchy colors, amazingly [[MinimalisticCoverArt minimalistic]] details, and eye-candy futuristic aesthetics that are [[http://kotaku.com/5870340/why-a-1995-playstation-game-still-looks-like-it-came-from-the-future/ timeless and still looks futuristic, even for today]].
** Wipeout's SpiritualSuccessor, ''VideoGame/FormulaFusion'' has this trope with all the futuristic SceneryPorn and of course, stylish visual designs and aesthetics by tDR.
** The cover artwork of ''VideoGame/{{Hardwar}}'' is this, which is also designed by them.

%%* Some scenes from ''Webcomic/FreakAngels'' seem to border this trope.

%%** Also seen in the title menu of [[http://www.crobasoft.com/index.php?site=bravogarden the original game]].
* An JustForFun/{{egregious}} offender is a particular trend in men's designer t-shirts, to cram as much random stuff on a square yard of fabric as possible. On one particularly offending sample: a skull with a rose between its teeth, five ravens, a statue of Justice, the innards of a cassette tape, a Shinto shrine, some more roses, a wreath of thorns, and what looks like a map of the coast of Norway. This is all on the same shirt.
%%** A shirt offered by [[http://www.splitreason.com/product/432 SplitReason]]. Some designer for the site seems to like this one a lot, considering that a few examples of its merchandise fall under this trope.
* There is a ''VideoGame/GuitarHero'' shirt with a similar baroque-inspired take on this style, involving many vaguely organic shapes centered around a Gibson SG controller, with cherubs facing opposite directions holding Kramer Striker controllers.
%%* Relatedly, stores that cater to hipsterish fashions or to teenagers often use this style in both ads and clothing. Examples include Urban Outfitters, Delia* s, Jimmyz, American Apparel, and Lucky Jeans.

* Design students' orgasms aren't only limited to Western art, either; there are Islamic styles ''very'' prone to them such as 15th- and 16th-century Persian architecture. Almost every available surface was decorated with painted tile. Then there's Ottoman Turkish buildings, which don't look like this until you go ''inside'' them.
