-->-- ''Literature/GalaxyOfFear: The Doomsday Ship''

To those with the strength to carry them, doors make for [[DoorFu good improvised weapons to carry around]]. Those without said strength can still make use of doors in combat, however, by way of Tae Kwon Door: slamming a still-hinged door in their opponent's face. Depending on the medium, this can either knock your opponent out cold or kill them, either by way of blunt trauma or decapitation if they managed to get their head through before the slam. Depending on the situation, any usually innocuous or decorative features on the door can quickly become genuine threats in their own right thanks to the momentum of the slam; doorknobs become clubs, glass windows shatter to become jagged knives, handles become daggers, doorframe edges become sharp enough to cut, and should your opponent's head be [[HardHead sturdy enough]] to break through the door, they've now got wooden splinter-barbs all pointing towards their vulnerable neck.

This trope is not just limited to your standard building doors; portcullis generally don't even bother with pretending and are often outright spiked to facilitate skewering people from above as they close, vault doors are giant metal slabs meant to be swung around, vertically closing doors might as well be either blunted guillotines or crushers depending on their thickness[[note]] Although these tend to be SlowDoors, which might make them difficult to use to intentionally cause harm[[/note]], drawbridges will leave anyone standing where they land SquashedFlat, {{Dilating Door}}s can leave your opponent HalfTheManHeUsedToBe, and don't be fooled by the lack of mass that Future {{Portal Door}}s and {{Cool Gate}}s have, either; they can be just as deadly, as 'shutting' them at the right time leads to death by PortalCut.

A common inversion involves grabbing hold of your opponent and shoving them into the door, as part of what make doors so dangerous is their sturdiness and so you can rely on them being solid enough for the full effect of Newton's third law to affect your opponent.

SuperTrope to ToyotaTripwire and TacticalDoorUse, non-accidental and non-humorous SisterTrope to TheDoorSlamsYou. If someone is actively carrying around a door as an ImprovisedWeapon, then you're looking at DoorFu. Contrast DoorJudo where doors are opened not to cause damage, but rather to ''prevent'' damage to the door and render the attacker TooFastToStop. No relation to HeelFaceDoorSlam barring very specific circumstances. If the door breaks from the abuse, (typically from especially {{hard head}}ed characters hitting it) you've just performed an accidental OpenSaysMe.

!!Examples of slamming a door against someone:

[[folder:Comic Books]]
* A vertical example in ''ComicBook/{{Asterix}} and Cleopatra'': While Asterix, Obelix and Getafix are in a jail cell, Obelix calls out to the guard, telling him they're going to leave now. The guard (who's standing in front of the door) just starts laughing, and so ends up ''under'' the door after Obelix pushes it back.
-->'''Obelix:''' These Egyptians are crazy! You tell them to get out of the way and they don't move!

* In ''Film/{{The Punisher|2004}}'' (2004) during Frank's fight with the Russian he gets his head slammed by the Russian closing the refrigerator door on in twice.
* ''Film/TheQuickAndTheDead''. One of the BigBad's mooks is hitting and abusing Cort, a [[HeelFaithTurn former gunman turned preacher]], in the belief that he won't hit back. As he's thrown at the BigBad's feet, Cort suddenly lashes back with a foot, slamming the door in the mook's face and breaking his nose.

* In ''Film/ZoltanHoundOfDracula'', Veidt is lying in the back of the hearse as Inspector Branco approaches, and kicks the rear door open and into Branco as he gets close.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Literature]]

* ''Literature/OctoberDaye'': When Toby and Quentin are trying to leave ALH Computing, the portcullis at the gate crashes down on her car, almost killing them.
* ''The Specialist'', by Gayle Rivers. The protagonist realizes he's being followed, so enters a public urinal and when exiting "accidentally" slams the door in the man's face. The man is only disoriented enough to be quickly searched to establish that he's carrying a gun before he comes round. It's more the lack of overt anger afterwards that establishes that he's a professional intelligence agent.
* ''Franchise/StarWarsLegends'': In ''Literature/GalaxyOfFear''[='=]s tenth book. The ship's A.I. has gone evil, the doors are [[OurDoorsAreDifferent science-fiction things that slide open]], and when one of the heroes starts to pass through a doorway...
-->''As he did, the heavy door slammed shut with the force of a rocket, crushing Dash against the door frame.''
* In ''Literature/TheTwelveChairs'', a minor character Alchen is somewhat obsessed with door springs and outfitted every door in the retirement home he's in charge of with springs of his own makings and extremely varying designs, including pneumatic, hydraulic, blocks-and-counterweights and so on. The only thing those contraptions have in common is them being extremely powerful, so those doors open with tremendous effort and then snap shut like bear traps, slamming people (especially old ladies living there) on regular basis. Even [[MagnificentBastard Ostap Bender]], after paying a visit to Alchen, gets smacked "[[LiteralAssKicking below his back]] with a-ton-and-a-half force" by the front door.

* ''Series/BuffyTheVampireSlayer'':
** Once while fighting a group of vampires in a parking lot Buffy slams a car door on a vampire's neck, decapitating him.
** During a fight in Joyce's house, Faith opens a French door in Buffy's path so she goes crashing through the glass.

* In ''Series/{{Daredevil|2015}}'', [[ComicBook/TheKingpin Wilson Fisk]] uses the door of his limo to [[{{Gorn}} repeatedly bludgeon Anatoly Ranskahov's head]] until he finally gets [[OffWithHisHead decapitated]].
* ''Series/DoctorWho'': In "[[Recap/DoctorWhoS37E9ItTakesYouAway It Takes You Away]]", after Ryan locks the door to the bedroom and pockets the key so Hanne, who is blind, won't try to go through the portal, she later knocks him out by slamming a door in his face to get the key.
* In ''Series/{{Leverage}}'', Eliot Spencer uses this as an attack. He is fighting a group of drug dealers, one of whom is in a truck repeatedly trying to get out to help his friends. Every time he tries, Eliot slams the door on him, at one point simply yelling "stay in the car!" which apparently intimidates the man enough not to even ''try'' the other door.
* ''Series/MacGyver2016'' has Mac in "Muscle Car + Paper Clip" go up against a close protection officer of the US Secretary of Defense after he and Cage try to abduct him because of hackers going after his pacemaker and he's not convinced that someone's after him. Mac decks him by using the Suburban's SUV door to stun him before he gets knocked out cold.
* In the BatmanColdOpen of ''Series/TheMandalorian'', a quarren is foolish enough to fire on the title character while lying across the doorway of a DilatingDoor. The Mandalorian proceeds to ShootOutTheLock causing it to [[DestructionEqualsOffSwitch close automatically]] and cut him in half.
* In ''Series/TheMinistryOfTime'', Julián steps in when Lope de Vega is about to sleep with Amelia by knocking on the door to his inn room, waiting until he hears him to be close to the door, then open it quickly enough to whack him in the face.

** In "A Stirring of Dust", Doyle realises that a hitman is hiding behind a door. He slowly eases it open as if he's going to cautiously enter the room, then suddenly slams it fully open into the hitman. Unfortunately there's a second hitman on the other side of the door who then jumps Doyle.
** Parodied in a skit by ''Series/TheTwoRonnies'' which had a gun-waving Doyle kicking open a door and searching an apartment for the villain, only to find no-one. As he leaves and closes the door behind him, the SquashedFlat villain falls out from behind it.
* ''Series/RizzoliAndIsles'': In "Love Taps", Nina stops a suspect who is attempting to flee on skateboard by kicking a gate into him as he tries to skate through it.

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Pro Wrestling]]
* At ''Wrestling/WrestleMania'' 18, Christian won the Hardcore title by slamming a door in Mighty Molly's face.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Video Games]]
* This is an actual gameplay mechanic in ''VideoGame/BonanzaBros''. In fact, the first enemy in the game has almost certainly been deliberately placed to be dispatched in this manner. The title characters can pull it off to temporarily knock out guards; useful when said guard is armored and otherwise immune to bullets. But said guards can pull the trope right back on you if you stand too close to the door as they enter.
* In ''VideoGame/BrainDead13'', this happens to the {{c|reepyCentipedes}}entipede in the wine cellar, except that when it chases Lance towards the exit, he opens the door and intentionally slams it into its face, putting it out of commission.
* In ''VideoGame/DeadCells'', if the Beheaded dodge rolls into a door or hits it with an attack, it goes flying open. This breaks the door and damages and stuns any enemies that were standing near it.
* In ''VideoGame/DukeNukem3D'', both Duke and the aliens can be crushed by sliding doors.
* ''VideoGame/DungeonMaster'': The button to close a door is not blocked by monsters standing in the doorway. As such, the player can start closing the door to have it slam against creatures for some ongoing damage as the door tries closing again and again.
* ''VideoGame/DwarfFortress'': [[http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Dwarven_atom_smasher A drawbridge]] destroys anything under it while lowering, if it isn't too big to prevent the bridge from coming down.
* ''VideoGame/GrandTheftAutoV'': Michael does this to fraudulent car dealer Simeon Yetarian with the door of the car he leased to Michael's son for "five grand a month".
* Faust from ''VideoGame/GuiltyGear'' weaponizes this with one of his special attacks, which has him disappear, then emerge from a door that suddenly appears in front of/behind his opponent.
* Kratos disposes of Theseus in ''VideoGame/GodOfWarII'' after the fight proper by trapping him between a pair of gates, one locked, one moveable, and repeatedly slamming the moveable gate into Theseus's face untill he dies.
* A gameplay mechanic in ''VideoGame/{{Gunpoint}}''. Wire a door just right, and it'll smack a rent-a-cop in the face. This knocks them out. Wire a door just wrong, and it'll smack you in the face. This gives you an achievement. Jumping kick a door off its hinges, and it can hit a rent-a-cop in the face. This knocks them out ''and'' gives you an achievement.
* ''VideoGame/HotlineMiami'': Jacket opens the door with a slam, which can knock a mook down if they are hit by it. Better; there's an unlockable mask that lets you kill mooks by hitting them with the door slam. You can keep using doors, after they've been used, so you can always cause a door slam.
* In ''VideoGame/InsurgencySandstorm'', kicking in a door, whether off its hinges if it opens towards you or open if away from you, will instantly kill anyone unfortunate enough to be on the other side.
* In the 3D ''[[Franchise/TheLegendOfZelda Legend of Zelda]]'' games, fake doors crush Link ''against the floor'' by falling on him.
* In ''VideoGame/LuigisMansion1'', some of the doors are fake. When Luigi goes to open them, they'll swing around and crush him against the wall.
* This is the main form of attack of the eponymous mouse policeman in the Arcade/NES classic ''VideoGame/{{Mappy}}''. The game allows the player or open or close doors in the face of enemies to stun them. There are also flashing doors which release a shockwave when opened that sends them flying out of the house.
* This can be done in the ''VideoGame/MetalGear'' games, starting with ''VideoGame/MetalGearSolid2SonsOfLiberty''. If you're hiding in a locker or similar, exiting while someone is directly in front of the door will knock them out of the way (possibly creating a domino effect if he flies into another person). ''VideoGame/{{Metal Gear Solid 3|SnakeEater}}'' introduced swinging doors, and charging through them full speed will knock aside anyone on the other side of the door. In all cases, these are quite unstealthy, but handy if you need to make a run for it in a pinch.
* ''VideoGame/ResidentEvil4'' & ''[[VideoGame/ResidentEvil5 5]]'' allow you to either open doors slowly and quietly in order to stealth in, or loudly kick the door open. If you use the more DynamicEntry then any enemies standing on the other side will be knocked back.
* One of the attack techniques of everyone's favourite mechanical assassin, ''[[VideoGame/RetroGameChallenge Robot Ninja Haggle Man]]''.
* In ''VideoGame/SaintsRow2'', the Boss knocks a door off its hinges when breaking into Johnny Gat's hearing, squashing one of the bailiffs under it (and promptly taking his keys to open Johnny's cuffs).
* ''VideoGame/ShadowsOfDoubt'' turns this trope into a very easy way to deftly knock out an inconvenient citizen. Knock on the door, wait for the sound of a key in the lock, and then shoulder tackle the door. Most of the time, the door will fly open into the other person's face, knocking them out cold. If your suspect is on the other side of the door, this is often a quick and easy way to subdue them and cuff them for the authorities to come and pick up.
* In both ''VideoGame/SplinterCell: Chaos Theory'' and ''Conviction'', you can kick open doors and knock out anyone else who is blocking it from the other side. A guard can also kick open a door if something is blocking it in the former. If that something is you, then the door will knock you out, causing an instant mission failed.
* In various of ''VideoGame/WWEVideoGames'', you can slam the other wrestler against doors in the Backstage arenas.
* In ''VideoGame/Yakuza1'', Kiryu kicks open a door a guy happens to be standing on the other side of, sending him flying offscreen. In other games, this is also one of Kiryu's HEAT actions where he crushes a thug's head in a taxi cab door.
** In the DLC story for the spinoff game ''VideoGame/LostJudgment'', some enemies during stealth missions are taken down this way.
* ''VideoGame/VampireTheMasqueradeBloodlines'': In a GuideDangIt moment, it's possible, albeit quite difficult, to kill an otherwise-invulnerable AdvancingBossOfDoom by crushing it with the closing shutter of an observatory dome.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Web Animation]]
* ''[[WebAnimation/ASDFMovie ASDF Movie 6]]'' has the door itself use this as the culmination to its own KnockKnockJoke in one of the skits:
-->'''Voice:''' Knock Knock!\
'''Guy:''' Who's there?\
''[the door swings open and hits the guy]''\
'''Voice:''' The Door!
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Western Animation]]
* In ''WesternAnimation/TheAdventuresOfJimmyNeutronBoyGenius'' episode "Party at Neutron's", Jimmy knocks out a ''velociraptor'' by slamming a door in its face.
* In the WesternAnimation/BuzzLightyearOfStarCommand prologue movie our heroes Buzz Lightyear and Warp Darkmatter are faced with a locked door to the Evil Emperor Zurg's hidden laboratory, which is immune to their laser weaponry. After Buzz gives up on blasting it down Warp decides to just walk over and knock on it, causing one of Zurgs [[MinionWithAnFInEvil minions]] to ''answer'' said door to the ''hidden laboratory'' -- which Warp then immediately slams in his face. Door now unlocked and minion knocked out, they walk right in. [[spoiler: Although this might have been all part of the plan, considering Warp's status as TheMole for Zurg.[[note]]"My name is ''[[CardCarryingVillain Darkmatter]]'' -- [[LampshadeHanging who's surprised here]]?"[[/note]]]]
* ''WesternAnimation/LooneyTunes'' used this gag several times, in various forms:
** In "WesternAnimation/EasterYeggs", WesternAnimation/BugsBunny is being chased by WesternAnimation/ElmerFudd, so Bugs closes a door on him, and Elmer's head goes right through the door. Bugs then proceeds to paint Fudd's face it like an Easter egg, and a BrattyHalfPint that was antagonizing Bugs earlier grabs it and tries to smash it open.
** In "WesternAnimation/BewitchedBunny", Witch Hazel is riding her broomstick through her house in pursuit of Bugs Bunny. Bugs opens a top-and-bottom type double door, runs through and slams the top half while leaving the bottom half open. Hazel then runs into the closed top half. Later in the cartoon, Bugs pulls the same gag in reverse, closing the bottom half and leaving the top half open. Witch Hazel (still on her broom) then runs into the bottom half.
* ''WesternAnimation/PrivateSnafu'': In "Operation Snafu", Snafu tricks the three Japs chasing him into bowing, then slams a door on their heads.
* ''WesternAnimation/TheSimpsons'' has used this a few times.
** In "Duffless", it's PlayedForLaughs: Homer sees that Barney is too drunk to drive and tries to knock him out using his car's door. Barney gives up and hands Homer the car keys.
** In "Treehouse of Horror XI" story "Night of the Dolphin": the FinalBattle has a dolphin using a car door to slam Comic Book Guy's head.
* ''WesternAnimation/StarWarsTheCloneWars'': During the Citadel arc a clone is literally [[HalfTheManHeUsedToBe cut in half]] by a security door. Another door [[GoryDiscretionShot slams shut in front of him right before his gruesome death]].
* In the ''WesternAnimation/TeenageMutantNinjaTurtles2003'' episode "Hun on the Run", a fight between [[TheBrute Hun]] and [[ImprobableWeaponUser Bishop]] sees Bishop close a train car door to trap Hun's arm in it. It doesn't last as Hun responds by [[DoorFu ripping the door off its hinges and attempt to bludgeon Bishop with it.]]
* ''WesternAnimation/SpaceGhost'' episode "The Web". Black Widow forces Space Ghost to fight a monster in an arena without his power bands. When Space Ghost gets his power bands back and can put up a fight, Black Widow calls for her guards to attack him. As they run through a door into the arena, Jace pulls a lever that causes the door to slam down on them and prevent them from entering.

* Franchise/JamesBond is fond of this trope in the numerous fights that has happened throughout the franchise. Not that windows, curtains, or other furniture get a pass either.
* In ''Film/{{Casino}}'' a local boy takes his cowboy boots off and puts his feet up on the card table where he's playing. After rudely refusing attempts by both the casino manager and [[VillainProtagonist "Ace" Rothstein]] to get him to put his shoes back on and show respect, Ace tells his security staff to literally throw the guy out and "Use his head to open the door." [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKf7Zre1djE They do just that]], with a couple of them picking the guy up and ramming him into the door like a battering ram.
* In ''Film/TheRaidRedemption'', Rama uses a variation of [[WrestlerInAllOfUs a facebuster]], grabbing a mook's head and bringing it crashing down on a [[https://biggiesplace.files.wordpress.com/2013/03/the-raid-1.gif?w=517&h=287 broken door]].
* In ''Film/AccidentMan'', Mike kicks Jane through a door hard enough to knock the door off its hinges.

* ''Literature/CallahansCrosstimeSaloon'' series short story "The Guy with the Eyes". Callahan's Bar has a heavy oak door with a poorly-repaired split in the centre. The split was caused by the head of a thieving patron named Big Beef [=McCaffrey=] in 1947 when Callahan threw him out of the bar.

* On ''Series/MarriedWithChildren'', Al likes to do this to any of Kelly's boyfriends he finds unsuitable (i.e. most of them). As he is tossing them out of the house, he "introduces" their face to various parts of the door first.
* ''Series/LawAndOrderCriminalIntent'': In "Gods & Insects", the VictimOfTheWeek is murdered by having his head slammed repeatedly in a car door.

* In ''VideoGame/FinalFightStreetwise'', Kyle Travers has to deal with "The Weasel" (real name: Nicky Wissell) about clues of where's his brother Cody. After sending some thugs (and defeating them), Kyle hasn't a better idea than corner Weasel and slam his head in his office's door until he wants to talk.
* In ''VideoGame/ResidentEvil5'' Wesker kicks Chris through a door right after he delivers the hilariously appropriate line "Your future ''hinges'' on this fight!"
* ''VideoGame/Yakuza0'' has this whenever a story level takes place. When the last man in a room is knocked out, the door to the next room is shown being opened by Kiryu/Majima punching or throwing a {{Mook}} through it. Presumably the handle was jammed or something.
