->Sometimes when someone has a crush on you\
They'll make you a mixtape to give you a clue
-->-- "Mixtape", Theatre/AvenueQ

Mixtapes are a way to show your affection for someone. Fill them up with Silly Love Songs, give them to the one you like, and see how they react. They can also be shared between couples. In more gloomy occasions, someone can fill a mixtape full of sad songs and listen to it while silently pining after another.

While less common, mixtapes can also be given for similar reasons between friends and family.

Mixtapes are traditionally audio or video cassettes, however, due to TechnologyMarchesOn this has been expanded to [=CDs=] and digital playlists. You're still more likely to see them in cassette format, though. Having a physical sign of the romance can be more appealing. Cassettes also have more of a nostalgia factor than a CD, and are considered by some to be more aesthetically pleasing (not to mention that it's easier to re-record a mixtape on a cassette compared to a CD-R, in which you need to burn a new blank disc entirelyrewriteable "CD-RW" [=CDs=] do exist, but are prone to accidental erasure and have a much lower range of compatibility than conventional [=CD-Rs=]).

Can overlap or include a GiftOfSong.

* Kaworu makes a mixtape for Rei as a Christmas present in Fanfic/AdviceAndTrust. He wanted to make something for her, but his adamite nature means that he has CreativeSterility. Shinji's suggestion of a mixtape proved to be a good workaround.
* Fanfic/OversaturatedWorld: Post-Saturation: As said in Decepticon Panel Speaker, it seems to be how Vinyl's parents got together. Her father wooed her mother using a mixtape:
-->Vinyl's dad: You wouldn't be here if it weren't for cassettes.\
Vinyl Scratch: I know, I know, most romantic mixtape ever. [sigh] Fine. See you later, Dad.

* In WesternAnimation/TurningRed, there is a platonic variation. Miriam makes a mix CD for Mei which serves as an indication of their strong friendship.

* Film/Delirium2018 has a mixtape of love as a very minor plot point.
* In Film/GuardiansOfTheGalaxy2014, Star-Lord's Walkman and the "Awesome Mix Vol. 1" mixtape that resides in it were gifts from his late mother. He treats them as Number One Dimes.
** In the sequel film, Film/GuardiansOfTheGalaxyVol2, they get This is one of the things that ends up pushing Peter's BerserkButton. At the end of the film, it is shown really cared about Peter because he had a Zune to gift him filled with music in a more high-tech version of this trope.
* Film/HighFidelity features extensive discussion of the art of making a mixtape.
* Film/NotAnotherTeenMovie has Ricky (a parody of Film/PrettyInPinks Ducky) trying to declare his love to Janie with a mixtape. Janie, oblivious, puts it in a stack with the many other mixtapes he's given her.
* Film/YoungAdult: When Mavis decides to go back to her hometown to get back together with her high school sweetheart Buddy, she finds an old mixtape marked "Mad love, Buddy", a tape which she presumably got from him. While driving to Mercury, Minnesota, she's listening to the tape, putting "The Concept" by Teenage Fanclub on repeat.
* In Film/BringItOn, Cliff gifts Torrance one complete with a song he's recorded himself as the first one on the mix. It's what inspires her HeroicSecondWind in the second half of the film.

* In Literature/HighFidelity, romantic mixtapes are practically Rob's SignatureMove when it comes to wooing a girl. At the end of the film version he makes one for his girlfriend Laura as he finally feels he has learned how to make her happy.
** But not before he comes perilously close to making a mixtape for another woman he is attracted to. Both he and Laura realize what this means.
* In Literature/ThePerksOfBeingAWallflower. Sam gives Charlie a mixtape as a gesture of affection/friendship, and Sam getting getting Charlie into music symbolizes how she welcomes Charlie into her friend circle. Sam and Charlie are in a case of WillTheyOrWontThey throughout the book, with Charlie having a crush on Sam that may or may not be reciprocated, and the mix tape is one of many gestures by Sam that signals possible interest on her part.
* In Literature/EleanorAndPark, Park makes Eleanor mix tapes of bands such as The Smiths and Joy Division upon learning her interest in them. She in turn makes him a mixtape of Beatles songs. Their mutual of love of music leads to them falling in love with each other.

* On Series/Friends, Chandler needs a last minute Valentines Day gift for Monica and finds an old mix tape. Unfortunately, it was a gift from his ex Janice, which is made clear when her screeching voice pops up in the middle of "My Funny Valentine".
* Series/OutOfJimmysHead: In the pilot movie Re-Animated, Jimmy decides to impress Robin by burning a mix CD, something that his cartoon friends, who are out of touch with modern culture, have never heard of.
-->Jimmy: I'll just take a bunch of [=MP3s=] and burn them into a CD.\
[the others stare in confusion]\
Jimmy: It's music.
* Series/HowIMetYourMother: Marshall and Lily have been together since their freshman orientation at college and the mix tapes they made for each other pop up from time to time. In one episode, they eat dinner at a restaurant that used to be Lily's apartment. One of the mix tapes is playing in the background, complete with Marshall's "I love you" message.
-->Marshall: I love this song. I haven't heard this in forever.\
Lily: I'm pretty sure this is a mix tape you made me in sophomore year.\
Marshall: [on tape] I love you, Lily. Happy Valentine's Day 1998.
* In Series/DeadlyClass, Marcus makes a mix-tape for Maria as a present after they've been secretly dating for a while.

* Series/Supernatural: In "The Future" (Season 12, Episode 19), the audience learns that Dean Winchester has at some point in the recent past gifted Castiel with a mix tape entitled Dean's top 13 Zepp traxx.\
Believing that Dean is upset with him, Castiel tries to return it. Dean refuses, telling him, "It's a gift--you keep those." In addition to Led Zeppelin being well established as Dean's favorite band, it was revealed earlier in the same season that a shared appreciation for Led Zeppelin's music was a major catalyst for Dean's parents getting together in the early 1970's.
* In "Love Is A Mixtape" of Series/TheGoldbergs: Adam makes a mixtape for a girl he likes and his mother mistakenly thought it was for her.
* Series/TheMuppetsMayhem: In the second episode Animal presents Nora with a series of romantic gifts starting with a mix tape. Since this is Animal the tape is already a shredded, unplayable mess when he hands it over.
* In the Series/MyNameIsEarl episode "The Mailbox" Earl tries to help a guy get together with a female friend and wasn't sure if she felt the same way. The matter isn't helped was when she made him a mix CD with the songs, "Feel Like Making Love", "You're My Best Friend", "Stroke Me", "That's What Friends Are For", "You've Got a Friend" and "Ooh That Smell" sending some real mixed messages. Later in the episode Earl gets close to her and she gives him an equally unclear mix CD with the songs, "Feel Like Making Love", "You're My Best Friend", "Do Me", "Don't Do Me Like That", "I Want Your Sex" and "Don't Stand So Close To Me".
-->Earl: This girl is impossible to read.
-->Randy: Yeah, Music/GeorgeMichael with Music/TomPetty? Are we partying or just hanging out?

* The Music/BetterThanEzra song "Rewind" is about the singer putting a mixtape together for his love. If the chorus is any indication, it didn't work:
-->Now there is nothing but a mix tape left behind,\
Now it won't rewind.
* Tift Merritt's "Mixtape" is about making mixtapes for a lover.
-->I'm just making you mixtapes with homemade covers\
Analog to show we're lovers\
And here under the jacket folds inside\
I've taped my heart for you to find
* The Music/Semisonic song "Singing In My Sleep" is about receiving a mixtape.
-->I've been living in your cassette\
It's the modern equivalent\
Of singing up to a Capulet on a balcony in your mind

* "Mixtape" from Theatre/AvenueQ involves Kate getting a mixtape from Princeton. At first it seems romantic, but as Kate looks over the list she notices that they're a mix of Friendship Songs, SillyLoveSongs, and just random songs. Kate ends up confused until she looks at Side B and sees that they're romantic songs... But then it turns out Princeton is making mixtapes for all his friends. The song ends with .

* VideoGame/Omori: The Special Mixtape, the PlotCoupon of the Otherworld arc, was made by Captain Spaceboy out of love for Sweetheart -- unfortunately, now that she's dumped him, he no longer sees any use for it and throws it in the Junkyard. The party decides to fetch it in the hopes that playing it can help Spaceboy get out of his post-breakup blues.

* This trope is jokingly made out to be a poor decision of adolescence in the January 13th, 2011 strip of the online comic Webcomic/Nedroid, entitled "Memories of Youth". Reginald is about to commit Seppuku when Beartato exclaims, "Hey! Stop! What are you doing?" As an example of IHatePastMe, Reginald explains, "Oh, I just remembered all the embarrassing things I did as a teenager." Beartato tells him to move on from the past, but a thought balloon pops up in Reginald's mind wherein he sees himself as a teenager at his school locker. This younger Reginald proudly proclaims, "This anonymous mixtape will surely win Becky's heart!" Present Reginald then .
* Webcomic/BandVsBand: Turpentine is a punk rocker and Honey Hart is a bubblegum pop singer. They are also girlfriends. In "Tape vs. Mix" they make mixtape cassettes for each other, and even though the songs aren't really to their liking, they appreciate it for capturing the other's personality and feelings.

* WebVideo/ManicPixieDreamWife: Chance has a problem: He married a ManicPixieDreamGirl. His wife Simone is a rabid indie fringe music freak who bombards him with mix [=CDs=]. As he heads to work, she hands him several of his morning mixes (for as he drives to the freeway, for as he gets above 50 miles per hour, for sole reflections and quiet moments after he parks but before he surrenders himself to the drudges--) He hopefully interrupts her and says he accidentally lost all of her blank [=CDs=], but she replies that blank [=CDs=] are like tampons: A girl always has some stored in most unlikely places. And sure enough, she has stashes and stashes of blank [=CDs=] in their house.

* One character in WesternAnimation/SummerCampIsland has a box full of mixtapes they've made for their crush on the king. They end up playing one and singing when they finally confess their love.
* Episode nine of WesternAnimation/OverTheGardenWall has a flashback of . Hijinx Occurs and Everything Goes Wrong when . We learn that trying to retrieve the mixtape is . In episode 10 (the final episode), .

* One entry to the Dear Prudence column was a woman who was stymied by the fact her boyfriend, with whom she had a good relationship with, gave her a mixtape full of songs that were gloomy, sad, and downright insulting. She wondered precisely what message he was trying to send about how he felt about their relationship.
