The doppelganger could be able to read the character's mind, allowing them to predict their actions or learn valuable information. If the doppelganger's well-being is tied to a character, then killing them presents a risk and would necessitate finding a way to stop them without killing them. This can also serve as a metaphor for how our actions can affect others we don't know about.
