While the reasons why this particular kind of facial mole has been deemed attractive are somewhat opaque, one thing for sure is that beauty marks have been seen as an appealing feature since at least the 18th century.[[note]]Most upper-class/nobles from Western European societies considered pale, white skin as a mark of their rank and fortune, since tanned skin was a sign that you worked outside in the fields, as a commoner or peasant would. As such, nobles would wear white makeup and apply a black spot (called "fly") as a contrast to show how white their skin was.\
