----
!!"Mr. Widemouth" contains examples of:
* AdorableAbomination: The titular Mr. Widemouth himself. He's a cute but evil little Furby lookalike of unknown but almost certainly paranormal origin.
* AmbiguousGender: The narrator. The story is told in the first person so their gender never comes up.
* AmbiguousSituation: The last time the narrator saw Mr. Widemouth, the day they left with their dad, they saw Mr. Widemouth from a upper window, sadly waving goodbye while holding a steak knife. [[spoiler:At no point is it clear if Mr. Widemouth wanted to outright kill the narrator that day.]]
* AssholeVictim: [[spoiler:It's strongly implied that Mr. Widemouth died when the house he was bound to burned down. Given that he was a serial killer of children, this fate was well deserved]].
* CheshireCatGrin: As his name suggests, Mr. Widemouth has this as his default expression (though it could also be a SlasherSmile).
* ChildrenAreInnocent: Averted; it's made clear that the protagonist, despite only being 5 years old, has enough common sense to know that they wouldn't "bounce off" after falling from a two-story window or come out unscathed after juggling kitchen knives; and they decide to keep the fact that they and their family will be moving away from the house within the next few weeks a secret from their "friend". The last line of the story, though, [[spoiler:suggests that many other children weren't as lucky and fell for Mr. Widemouth's trap, paying it with their lives]].
* CuteIsEvil: Mr. Widemouth is an adorable little Toys/{{Furby}}-like creature that is also a [[spoiler:repeat]] child murderer.
* FalseFriend: Mr. Widemouth himself, who befriends the narrator for the sake of tricking them into getting themself killed for his own amusement. [[spoiler:And he's done it before, too]].
* FauxAffablyEvil: Mr. Widemouth pretends to be friendly in order to deceive the protagonist into doing what he wants them to do, no matter how deadly. Tellingly, he drops the affability when they resist one too many times.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: At one point, Mr. Widemouth tells the narrator about a trail he wants to take them down one day when they're "ready". Later, this trail turns out to lead to [[spoiler:a graveyard, filled with Mr. Widemouth's previous victims]].
* ForTheEvulz: Mr. Widemouth only seems to [[spoiler:trick children into killing themselves]] for his own amusement.
* HauntedHouse: The ending implies that Mr. Widemouth was bound to the house somehow. [[spoiler:After it burned down years after the narrator moved out, it's strongly hinted that Mr. Widemouth perished along with it]].
* RidiculouslyCuteCritter: Mr. Widemouth himself is described as a cute little fuzzball, [[CuteIsEvil but this doesn't make him a good guy]].
* SerialKiller: [[spoiler:Turns out, the narrator was only Mr. Widemouth's latest intended victim]].
* ShoutOut: The narrator compares Mr. Widemouth to a Toys/{{Furby}}.
* SickEpisode: The narrator was suffering from a case of mononucleosis when they first met Mr. Widemouth.
* TwistEnding: [[spoiler:Mr. Widemouth has killed people before]].
* VillainousBreakdown: Mr. Widemouth starts losing it when the narrator decides they won't keep going along with his schemes. Eventually, he resorts to just trying to kill them himself, though fortunately they end up moving away before he can.
* WhamLine: When the narrator finally follows the path that Mr. Widemouth told them he wanted to take them to one day.
-->[[spoiler:The trail ended at the New Vineyard Memorial Cemetery. I noticed that many of the tombstones belonged to children.]]
* WouldHurtAChild: Mr. Widemouth tries to trick the then five year old narrator into killing themself through various methods, such as jumping out a window or juggling knives. [[spoiler:While the narrator escapes, at the end they learn that other kids weren't so lucky...]]
