->'''Himiko''': Congratulations, you just discovered that we're all living in a fantasy setting, with an entire world of magical creatures, dusty tomes of magical spells and mages hiding from the muggles. Bad news, is that it's Call of Cthulhu more than Harry Potter, and to say it in the least vulgar way, you're now officially boned.

''[[https://archiveofourown.org/works/39704244/chapters/99399003 When Reason Fails]]'' by [[https://archiveofourown.org/users/Mirrond/pseuds/Mirrond Mirrond]] is an NewWeird AlternateUniverse fic of ''Manga/MyHeroAcademia''.

The world of ''When Reason Fails'' is a world without Quirks, but that does not mean there are no Powers. Magic and the supernatural abounds, and when Izuku discovers the truth of the world, he's going to need all the help he can get. Luckily for him, he meets Himiko Toga, who is both a ghoul and has experience in this world. Even more luckily for him, she decides to actually help him instead of ''eat'' him.

[[folder: ''Book One'']]
* AbsenceOfEvidence: Due to the Ancient of Denial's nature, it is impossible to know if someone has learned its ultimate spell, but people have inferred [[RetGone what it does]] by noticing that the number of mages who reach the top of the Denial school of magic are the lowest of all the Powers.
* AbsurdlyDividedSchool: The student body of UA is divided into several independent groups called Cabals that look out for themselves, and sometimes kill each other either due to rivalries, grudges, or personal ambitions of the perpetrators. The Cabals themselves are grouped under the Four Warlords that control the Exclusion Zones.
* AccidentalPervert: Invoked. While Izuku is unable to see her due to a Mirrorgeist's illusions, Himiko positions herself so Izuku would accidentally grab her breasts.
* TheAce:
** Shoto Todoroki is such a talented Initiate that he completes the entire Black Course which should have taken five years in two years instead, and commands enough respect among the student Initiates that the Warlords are willing to at least hear him out.
** [[spoiler:Being an ace turns out to be a ''prerequisite'' for successfully becoming a Magister. You have to be talented to begin with to have any chance of surviving the process. That is why existing Magisters do not share the method publicly. Keeping it a secret filters out untalented Initiates so that the ones that can figure out the process and gather the resources for it are clearly the talented ones.]]
** Ibara Shiozaki's power is in the upper end of Dryads as a whole, and even Shoto says that you'd be hard-pressed to find someone better at forest management from Dryads thrice her age.
* AchievementsInIgnorance:
** After the group defeats Geten with Izuku's plan, Katsuki notes how Izuku is prone to this.
--->''Bakugou has long ago realized that Deku is fully capable of performing the impossible for as long as no one told him that it was impossible. The nerd just proved it to some additional people.''
** [[spoiler:Izuku somehow manages to "adopt" an [[EldritchAbomination Outsider]], the Outsider taking the form of a 10-year-old girl that refers to him as her 'oniichan' (although mostly because she's his actual sister). Then said Outsider takes the Cabal to U.A.'s Special Exclusion Zone, which ''nobody'' has ever found, would make one of them U.A.'s Fifth Warlord and allows its controller limited RealityWarper powers within it. He essentially got way ahead in the world of Initiates by ''complete accident''.]]
* ActuallyPrettyFunny:
** When Yagi asks Izuku if he can tell something is weird in his family, Izuku mentions his father thought that ''Film/{{Morbius|2022}}'' wasn't that bad a film. Yagi nearly chokes from laughter.
** [[invoked]] Yagi laughs when Todoroki makes a crack at the former's AccidentalInnuendo regarding Izuku's parents.
** When he learns that [[spoiler:Izuku's father may have actually been an Aberrant that was even more powerful than Izuku's mother]], Katsuki cracks up laughing.
** Soma Michiko thought her brother's defeat to Izuku's cabal was so hilarious that she changed her fortress' [=WiFi=] password to make a reference to it - and arranged it so Geten would have to enter that password every time he wants to connect to Internet.
* AdaptationalJobChange: Masaru quits the fashion industry in favor of starting a gardening business.
* AdaptationalSuperpowerChange: There are no Quirks. The characters have magic instead.
* AdaptationRelationshipOverhaul:
** Izuku and Katsuki are actual friends instead of victim and bully. [[spoiler:Ochako was also their friend, until she was killed by a monster and the Censor made them forget about her.]]
** Himiko Toga, rather than a villain, becomes a friend of Izuku and Ochako's. She's still obsessed with him, though.
* AdaptationSpeciesChange: Many characters who were pure human in canon or Mirrond's other stories are demihumans or otherwise here:
** Himiko Toga is a Ghoul.
** Tsuyu is a frog demihuman.
** Ibara Shiozaki is a Dryad.
** Geten is a Cold One.
** [[spoiler:Ochako is a [[RevenantZombie Stalker]].]]
** [[spoiler:Aiko from Mirrond's other stories is a human chuuni pretending to be an eldritch god. Here, she is an ''actual'' eldritch god.]]
** [[spoiler:Nezu is the Demi-Power of Rats.]]
* TheAlliance: Groups of students can form alliances, informally called Cabals, for mutual protection.
* AmbiguouslyHuman:
** There are huge question marks on Izuku's humanity. Yagi speculates that he is mostly human based on what they uncovered about his mother and that his humanity comes from his father. [[spoiler:However, further oddities cast doubt on whether his father is himself even human, which just muddles the question further for Izuku's own humanity. It's later revealed that Izuku's father might be an awakened human, which brings its own set of rarities.]]
** Ochako is clearly something non-human, considering her conversation with All Might and her ability to return from death. [[spoiler:She's revealed to be a Stalker, a type of RevenantZombie powered by the love they feel for a certain person - in Ochako's case, Izuku.]]
* AnIcePerson: Shoto wields ice magic.
* AnimalisticAbomination:
** Crawler Mimics are a type of cryptid that resembles spiders.
** Spider from the Forest of Red is a Greater Aberrant that is described as trying to look like a spider but getting it wrong. It is however spider enough that things a spider is vulnerable to can be used to greater effect against it than normal bullets.
* AnotherDimension: There are other dimensions that are collectively called Elsewheres where the supernatural originates from.
* ApatheticTeacher: Aizawa doesn't bother to teach Izuku how to fight because he figures Izuku will die in a couple of weeks at most.
* TheArchmage:
** Magisters are the pinnacle of what mages can be, being able to more freely use magic due to being resistant to most of the potential downsides of overusing magic.
** Heresiarchs are the pinnacle of what cultists can be, being treated as the cultist equivalent of the Magisters.
* BaitAndSwitch: [[spoiler:When Katsuki tells his Cabal that all the female Warlords are romantically pursuing Shoto, Shoto says he's wrong. He then clarifies that he means that Monoma is bisexual and that Shoto is being romantically pursued by ''all'' of the other four Warlords instead of saying the female Warlords have no interest in him.]]
* BeyondTheImpossible:
** [[spoiler:Things like defeating a Category Seven Aberrant or befriending a Demi-Power are generally considered impossible, especially if you are not a Magister. Izuku achieving ''both'' feats in ''a single trip'' just ''three weeks'' into his life as a ''student'' Initiate surpasses what most ''Magisters'' achieve in their ''immortal lifetimes'', and Izuku isn't even a full student of the Black Course.]]
** [[spoiler:Corporeal and Sanity damage happens when the stronger entity imports its concepts onto the weaker, and Greater Aberrants are the ones to inflict this damage on humans in any encounter by default and without exception. Yagi inflicting Corporeal damage on a Category 4 Greater Aberrant therefore flies in the face of everything he and the rest of UA's teachers thought they knew about the world]].
** [[spoiler:A mortal killing a Power, not a Demi-Power, one of the ''actual Powers'', is impossible. People know that, the Powers know that. Everyone knows that. This is why it was so shocking when in the past, ''a human struck down the Ancient of Malice''. Not even the Powers have any clue how that happened, but it did, and all of Malice's Aberrants were extinguished with him and only a few spells remained as leftovers]].
* BlackComedy: A good part of the story's humor is based on this.
** When Izuku recounts to Katsuki how Himiko killed and ate one of the artificers, Himiko cheerfully remarks she tasted like strawberries.
** During the AbandonedHospital exploration, Shoto puts some super-slippery lubricant on a set of stairs and watches as one of the [[PlantPerson Gardeners]] slips on it and breaks its neck. Shoto considers it hilarious. but grants it a 7/10 because the Gardener didn't break enough bones.
* BlackSpeech: Unspeech, which Shoto states is to the Ancients what Latin is to the Catholic Church, he had to learn it by having it described to him, and the equivalent of a comma is a very powerful warding glyph.
-->'''Shoto:''' It can only be written by defacing other scripts. It can only be read with your eyes closed. It can only be spoken with particular qualities of silence. And unlike most thaumaturgic language, its supernatural influence on the reader kicks in not when you read or hear it but when you forget what you read or heard. It is also said that nothing good was ever written in that language.
* BlackmailIsSuchAnUglyWord: According to Shoto, "blackmail" is too negative. He prefers "aggressive persuasion techniques".
* BlessedWithSuck: Most powers tend to be this.
** Izuku's Charm (which amplifies any demi-human girl's desire if they are genuinely attracted to him) saves him from getting killed by Himiko, but, as Yagi points out, if it's a demi-human that, for example, is the kind that puts her eggs into the male so the newborn devour him after hatching, he is screwed, and in a bad way. Izuku later suspects that said influence is also twisting his mind, causing him to find each girl's kinks arousing.
** Delving too deep into a field of magic can cause irreversible changes to one's body and mind. For example, the magic from the Archon of Mercy is HealingHands, but overuse will warp the wielder's mind to the point they will think nothing of offering themselves as food to a hungry ghoul, seeing that as a natural act of kindness. And that's if you're lucky and don't catch the Power's attention...
** Demi-humans in general suffer fewer drawbacks from using compatible magic, but they suffer different downsides in general. They may be targeted because people fear their powers, or to use their body parts as materials. They also have different biological needs which makes it hard to live in human society, and their overall different biological mechanisms can be taken advantage of to defeat them.
** [[spoiler: Being the Warlord of the Special Exclusion Zone. You get a place that can be modelled at will by spending Contribution Points, under your full control, and which can connect to any other place in the school grounds you have been to. In exchange, the rest of U.A.'s Initiates will likely begin to hunt you down for the secret, and the other Warlords will immediately begin to plot so they can take over the place. Oh, and you have a great chance of ending up with zones that generate hostile creatures.]]
* BluffTheImpostor: Played with. Izuku on separate occasions tries to check if someone he never met before is dangerous to him by asking them misleading questions:
** When two unfamiliar men show up at his door, he asks if they are the handymen he called when he did no such thing. When they answer they are the Black Course faculty, he just lets them in.
** When Uraraka Ochako claims to have known him from a previous school, he asks her what kind of tree there was between the main building and the gym, she answers she doesn't remember a tree, just a lawn and fountain, which is the correct answer, passing Izuku's test.
* BodyHorror: [[spoiler:After Izuku makes the Ziggurat abomination run away, he briefly sees himself with twelve fingers, and then he turns to see Shoto has lost his nose and his body is deformed (while thinking nothing's wrong with him), while Katsuki has literally lost his face, forcing Shoto to open a "mouth" so he won't asphyxiate. Fortunately, the damage is temporary.]]
* BotanicalAbomination: The Tree that Dreams is a plant-based Greater Aberrant that took over a psychiatric hospital.
* BrainBleach: Overhaul is seriously disgusted when he sees Decay's sandwich is full of maggots.
* BrickJoke: The screw Shoto found at the lake [[spoiler:turns out to be one of the clues leading to the Special Exclusion Zone]].
* BrokeTheRatingScale: UA has a cheat sheet for reviewing a student Initiate's activities to award Contribution Points. Izuku's Cabal's feats of [[spoiler:befriending a Demi-Power or defeating a Category Seven Aberrant]] were considered so unfeasible that U.A. doesn't have them in their cheat sheet.
* BrokenMasquerade: From Izuku's perspective, the Censor that acts to hide the supernatural from {{Muggles}} like him simply stops working for him, so he is thrust into the deep end almost right away before he gets a much-needed orientation on the basics.
* BrutalHonesty: When Izuku questions Ibara if she has a long-term plan to get impregnated by him, she bluntly answers "yes".
* CantLiveWithoutYou: [[spoiler:[[RevenantZombie Stalkers]] feed off any sort of positive attention their bond gives them. Their bond dies, so does the Stalker. Ochako, as one such Stalker, ''literally'' can't live without Izuku.]]
* CassandraTruth: When Yagi reports on what Izuku's Cabal told him about their expedition to the hospital, Aizawa calls it "[[LeaningOnTheFourthWall a very wild fanfiction]]". It takes the Principal confirming it for them to believe it (and start a riot).
* ChekhovsGun:
** Early in the story, there's a mention of Izuku and Katsuki transferring to U.A. after a car accident killed several students, hurt Katsuki, and left Izuku hospitalised for two months. [[spoiler:This is the incident where Ochako died to something supernatural, came back as a Stalker, and due to the Censor, Izuku and Katsuki not only could not see her but forgot about her, causing her to rampage (and injuring Izuku so hard he was put in a hospital for two months) until an Initiate stopped her and explained the situation.]]
** Himiko mentions in Chapter 19 there's rumors of an Exclusion Zone that no one has found yet. [[spoiler:It's the place where Izuku's Cabal ends up at after their AbandonedHospital run.]]
** The device Yagi gave Izuku to test if Izuku's mother's aberrant influence could be suppressed [[spoiler:comes back in the Ziggurat, when Izuku uses it to unveil his father's aberrant influence and cause the EldritchAbomination guarding the place to run away]].
** {{Invoked|Trope}} by Nezu in regards to [[spoiler:Izuku's father's real identity]], as he tells Aiko not to reveal it so it can be brought up later at an appropriate moment.
* ChekhovsGunman: [[spoiler:Ochako was the one that attacked Izuku's apartment early in the story.]] [[spoiler:And the one that caused the injuries that hospitalised Izuku before the story.]]
* ChickMagnet: All the female Warlords are into Shoto and are romantically pursuing him.
* ColdEquation: When Izuku expresses his dislike of Yagi not being willing to help Tsuyu adapt to life among humans, the teacher points out that, yes, he could do that - but, apart from the fact that Tsuyu may actually not ''want'' said help, the time and resources spent helping her would be time and resources not spent in helping many other people.
* ComicallyMissingThePoint: When Aizawa being a terrible teacher is brought up, Himiko tries to defend him by mentioning her prey once asked him for help in front of her (with the clear implication that Aizawa just stood by or left as Himiko murdered them) before cutting her story short when Izuku, Katsuki and Yagi just stare at her.
* TheComicallySerious: Shoto's utter inability to express feelings somehow makes a good part of the stuff he says all the more hilarious.
* CompensatingForSomething: Izuku jokes that Katsuki's doing this when he sees the [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MRAP MRAP]] he bought from Hatsume.
* CoolAndUnusualPunishment: In order to stop Shoto from continuing to share irrelevant details about the Warlords (namely sexual kinks or body measurements), Katsuki threatens to set him up with all four of them.
* CoolTeacher: As a sharp contrast to Aizawa, Yagi is willing to go the extra mile for his students while making sure they can stand on their own without his help eventually. [[spoiler:He actually helps Ochako at U.A., even giving her an Initiate phone and getting her in Izuku's classes even though she technically doesn't have any right to either.]]
* TheCorrupter: Katsuki brings up the hypothesis that Izuku's mere presence slowly turns guys around him into horndogs. Shoto considers it improbable, but when Katsuki makes him think about [[GirlOnGirlIsHot Yaoyorozu and Intelli making out naked on his bed]], Shoto is surprised (and a bit horrified) when he realizes Katsuki has a point.
* CouldHaveAvoidedThisPlot: [[spoiler:When Izuku tells Ibara that Komori wanted to become a Dryad too, Ibara feels silly that mind-controlling her Cabal might have been completely unnecessary.]]
* CovertPervert: Shoto might be this, considering how he keeps information about Yaoyorozu's and Intelli's kinks at the top of his mind, and his "using his imagination" moment during Himiko and Ochako's CatFight at the mirrorgeist's house.
* CrazyEnoughToWork:
** How the Cabal defeats [[AnIcePerson Geten, the Nightmare of Ice]]. Todoroki, Katsuki, and Ochako act as bait to catch Geten's attention, then Izuku shoots him from the back, and Himiko takes advantage of the distraction to jump in, get through his shields, and use her [[FlayingAlive Skin Removal spell]] on his face - causing him to be blinded [[HoistByHisOwnPetard by the thick ice cap that springs from any non-lethal injury he suffers]].
** How Izuku defeats [[spoiler:Dragon from the Desert of Bones, a powerful Category Seven Aberrant, involves Shoto throwing him at it so he can get close enough to scare it away with his fear influence. Amazingly, ''it works'', because his fear influence is ''that'' powerful when not being dampened]].
* CursedWithAwesome: Some Initiates ''want'' to become demihumans, having decided the benefits are worth the costs. [[spoiler:Komori, for instance, wants to become a Dryad and is upset she did not know Ibara was one that she could ask questions about the process.]]
* DarwinistDesire: More established Initiate Families constantly look for talented unattached Initiates to join their family trees. [[spoiler:Shoto asks Katsuki to give dating his sister Fuyumi and distant cousin Kamiji a try, because he realizes Katsuki is highly talented (like Izuku) and has no yanderes pining for him (unlike Izuku), and thinks Katsuki will be a good fit for his family.]]
* DeathByAdaptation:
** Himiko killed Chikuchi Togeike, Tsutsutaka Agoyamoto, Mashirao Ojiro, and Bibimi Kenranzaki in retaliation for an attack the group initiated.
** Minoru Mineta is killed and eaten by Himiko because he was dumb enough to be lured into her trap.
* DeathIsCheap: Ochako has the ability to come back from death. [[spoiler:For as long as Izuku wants her around, she will ''always'' come back from death.]]
* {{Determinator}}: [[spoiler:Stalkers don't have any power other than ResurrectiveImmortality and TheNeedless, but that makes them the ultimate persistence hunters, particularly if their bonded is at risk.]]
* DidntSeeThatComing:
** Shoto expected Himiko to kill Izuku after she took him to her lair. Izuku not dying is something no one expected and draws attention to him from UA's Black Course.
** Ibara is flabbergasted when [[spoiler:Izuku not only manages to smooth over issues with Setsuna over him poaching Ibara, Setsuna actually petitions for her entire Cabal to join Izuku's as a subsidiary]].
* DidWeJustHaveTeaWithCthulhu: [[spoiler:Shoto is dumbfounded when Izuku feeds the Outsider of Existence his bento.]]
* DidntThinkThisThrough: [[spoiler:Izuku decides that, as part of his apology to Ochako, he won't stop having sex with her until she's fully satisfied. Ochako's a PerpetualMotionMonster. Do the math.]]
* DiggingYourselfDeeper: Komori does this when she asks Izuku if she can join his Cabal so she can learn how to become a dryad from Ibara and then tells Tokage she intends to return as soon as she achieves her objective. In front of both of them.
* DigitalAbomination: Discussed. Shoto mentions that there are undead on the internet and you are well-advised to not draw their attention.
* DivineParentage: Aiko turns out to be the child of the Ancient of Desire. [[spoiler:So is Izuku, her brother, which is why his Charm ability is so powerful even when suppressed by his father's influence.]]
* DoYouWantToHaggle: Izuku and Mei try to negotiate the value of his Cabal doing a mail run for Mei before Katsuki derails it and tells them to meet in the middle to save time.
* DopeSlap:
** Katsuki's favored method of keeping Izuku from doing something stupid is a hand-chop to the back of the head.
** Defied by Shoto, who doesn't ice-blast Izuku [[spoiler: after he makes an {{understatement}} regarding their discovery of the Special Exclusion Zone]] because he doesn't want to anger [[EldritchAbomination Aiko]], who is sleeping in Izuku's arms.
** Izuku uses Shoto as his proxy for delivering neck chops. Shoto is willing to hit himself when Izuku tells him to do so after making stupid comments.
* TheDreaded:
** Nightmares are individuals at UA who are responsible for numerous deaths of Black Course Candidates and even full Black Course Students. Himiko is the Nightmare of Blood and Izuku's association with her protects him from most other students, and she's on the ''lower end'' of the power spectrum for Nightmares. [[spoiler:Shoto implies Uraraka could join their ranks as the "Nightmare of Love".]] At the top of them all is Soma Michiko, the Nightmare of Frost, a powerful Cold-One even by the general metric of the World of Initiates and antagonizing her is considered a creative form of suicide even for the Warlords.
** Magisters are this as well because they are not so much people as forces of nature. Decay (formerly known as Tomura) is one of them and is a difficult fight for Izuku's Cabal that they barely survived even with Decay choosing to handicap himself a lot for their fight.
** The Warlords are student Initiates that control certain strategical zones in the U.A. Campus, and have managed to establish powerful Cabals around them. Saiko Intelli, one of the Warlords, keeps Geten, the Nightmare of Ice, in her payroll.
* DungeonBypass: Played with since it is by accident. [[spoiler:The principal of U.A., Rats, ''intended'' for the Special Exclusion Zone to be found by solving the various clues and finding the right artifacts scattered throughout UA. Izuku's Cabal find it by getting teleported there by Aiko when they only wanted to get home.]]
* EldritchAbomination: It's a Lovecraft-like universe, of course it's got them. Examples thus far include:
** [[spoiler:Dragon from the Desert of Bones, a Category Seven Greater Aberrant, encountered in the Ziggurat on the Desert of Bones. It's described as being too alien to describe, its sheer presence crushing minds and warping bodies of the party before it's forced to run. The term 'dragon' is about the role it was playing, guarding a 'tower' where the 'princess' was imprisoned, because it was too alien to compare it to anything else, even basic shapes and color.]]
** The Tree that Dreams, the lower category Greater Aberrant controlling the abandoned mental hospital, while much more grounded in human concepts is still alien enough to enter the human world by spreading its roots into it through the dreams of a patient.
** [[spoiler:Outsider of Existence, while human-like in looks, is still incredibly alien, capable of counting up the length of its existence with precision counted in seconds in a heartbeat and having issues understanding simple concepts (like death). It's even implied to be capable of pulling its own understanding of the concept of time out of itself, creating a potent artifact while losing the ability to comprehend time before it has it explained to it again.]]
** Spider of the Forest of Red is a Category One Greater Aberrant that's described as trying and failing to look like a giant spider.
* EmotionSuppression: One drawback of overusing Ice Magic is that it suppresses the expression of emotions. Shoto is far enough along that he casually talks about Himiko being a SerialKiller with less emotion than a normal person observing that it is raining.
* EnlightenedSelfInterest: There's not much room for selflessness and altruism among Initiates, but they ''are'' willing to help each other, ''for a price''. This price can be as cheap as providing entertainment, like what Shoto gets from Izuku's Cabal in exchange for helping them out, to as expensive as braving a dangerous area to get rare materials in exchange for alchemical drugs.
* EpicFail: Katsuki's one attempt to draw a warding glyph. The result, according to Izuku, had no resemblance to any glyph at all.
* EroticEating: Himiko does the "eating ice-cream in a seductive manner" version with Geten's torn-off hand. Izuku is grateful when Katsuki {{dope slap}}s him before he does something stupid.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: Cultists of the Ancients have a particular tendency to be bad people, but even they don't like Malice cultists and actively help wipe them out if they turn up.
* EvenTheGuysWantHim: Monoma is bisexual and interested in Shoto.
* EveryManHasHisPrice:
** [[spoiler:Shoto is initially hesitant to bring Aiko the Outsider of Existence back to UA, but when she offers him the knowledge on how to become a Magister, he immediately says they should allow her to come home with them. Izuku is stunned by his shamelessness. Izuku and Shoto decide to offer the same knowledge to Yagi to convince him to help them, long-term.]]
** When Izuku doesn't want to wear a suit [[spoiler:to the Warlords' Summit]], Shouto convinces Ochako to help him make Izuku wear it by offering to get her photos of Izuku in a nice suit.
** [[spoiler:Hatsume betrays U.A. to the MLF because they offered her more than the school.]]
* EveryoneHasStandards: As much as Izuku loves Himiko, he has to draw a line for her and explicitly tells her she ''cannot'' kill people for ''fun''. She can kill in self-defense, or to avoid starvation, but that's it.
* EvilLaugh: Todoroki has a mechanical laugh that everyone finds super creepy.
* ExactWords:
** Shoto offers Izuku tips on how to deal with Himiko. Izuku accepts hoping to learn something to defend himself. Shoto suggests he use protection.
** [[spoiler:During his fight with Izuku's Cabal, Decay promises to say his spells as he casts them - but when he casts one spell after naming another, he points out he never promised he would name the spell he was casting.]]
** [[spoiler:Aiko calls Izuku "onii-chan" not as a fancy honorific but because he's her actual, biological big brother.]]
* FacePalm:
** Katsuki is prone to slapping his face in response to Izuku's antics. He hits himself hard enough that it sounds like a gunshot.
** ''[[NotSoAboveItAll Shoto]]'' has an ''epic'' one (complete with exasperated sigh) [[spoiler:when the little girl sitting on Izuku's lap, eating his lunch and calling him "onii-chan" reveals she's the [[SemiDivine Outsider of]] [[EldritchAbomination Existence]]]].
** Both of them do synchronized dabbing when Izuku reveals his latest [[WeirdnessMagnet Midoriya Experience]] event: [[spoiler:accidentally recruiting Tokage's Cabal as a subsidiary of his]].
* FamedInStory: Among U.A., Izuku is well-known due to something about him causing Himiko, a known killer, to not kill ''him'' like her other victims. Later feats, such as being the first person whom Tsuyu spoke to, only boost it. [[spoiler:Turns out that even Decay's sensei knows of him and his strange nature (granted, it's because Izuku's his son).]] [[spoiler:Izuku becoming one of UA's Warlords by discovering and claiming the Special Exclusion Zone three weeks into his Candidacy, a frankly ludicrous feat when even if one is successful, it should have taken a lot more time than that, cements it.]]
* FantasticRacism:
** The treatment of demihumans by baseline humans varies, but it ranges from kill-on-sight to being treated as pets in the best-case scenario, with only more powerful and/or useful ones having the chance of being treated with respect. In some cases, the kill-on-sight treatment is justified like with ghouls, since ghouls feed on humans, and humans fearing and hating them is something even Izuku admits is a matter of a working self-preservation instinct. He, however, finds it upsetting that U.A.'s faculty just treats Tsuyu as an animal.
** Setsuna has gotten some grief over her refusal to learn any magic and is surprised that Izuku is understanding over her refusal to risk any side effects of learning magic.
* FauxYay: Izuku is straight [[spoiler:at the beginning]], but it does not stop him from flirting with Katsuki to get a reaction out of him.
* FetchQuest:
** Hatsume calls on the debt Izuku's Cabal owes her to get them to retrieve a package for her as part of a smuggling exercise U.A. is having her do.
** To enter a long-term relationship with Tokage's alchemist Cabal, Izuku' Cabal has to fetch seeds or seedlings of magical plants from an abandoned hospital.
* FingerPokeOfDoom: Himiko can use her [[FlayingAlive Skin Removal spell]] with her finger to poke someone and make her target's day a hundred times worse. Geten learns too late that "The Most Devastating Nose Boop In History" is more than enough to defeat him.
* FiveSecondForeshadowing: [[spoiler:Decay asks himself why his Sensei wants Aizawa dead. He quickly finds out why when Aizawa uses an extremely powerful spell on him that almost kills Decay instantly.]]
* FlippingTheBird: Izuku and Katsuki are the guiltiest of using this to express themselves. Particularly Katsuki.
* FluffyTamer:
** Izuku could be considered one, given how he managed to not only survive [[OurGhoulsAreDifferent Himiko]] [[SerialKiller Toga]] but turn her into a friend[=/=]follower[=/=]lover.
** Ibara Shiozaki can use her mind-control spores to tame creatures such as Great Wolves.
* {{Foil}}: Yagi is a good teacher, and Aizawa is a terrible one, and Izuku constantly comparing them highlights the differences between them.
* {{Foreshadowing}}:
** Ochako tells Izuku they went to the same school but neither Izuku nor Katsuki remembers her. [[spoiler:This foreshadows the fact that Ochako was Izuku and Katsuki's childhood friend before a monster killed her at age fifteen and she transformed into a Stalker, which caused the Censor to erase her from the latter two's memories.]]
** When Izuku's Cabal first enter Ghost Town, they read an old evacuation notice that said to avoid the forest, wear gas masks, destroy plant life in a home, among other things. This foreshadows the power of the Nightmare of Leaves, also known as Shiozaki Ibara.
** Several small and big things added up to foreshadow [[spoiler:Hatsume Mei being a spy. Her being incredibly spiteful towards the other artificer students, something Izuku explicitly noted to himself, is indicative of a less-than-pure morality. The pick-up mission she sent his Cabal on resulted in them encountering an unknown Magister. She was one of the few people outside Izuku's Cabal to know about the Gunga Mountain trip, and Shoto saw ''that same Magister'' there. She also prioritised keeping in contact with Izuku over profit margins, indicating she knew her merchandise and contribution points would soon be useless to her]].
* AFormYouAreComfortableWith: [[spoiler:The Outsider of Existence, also known as Aiko, takes the form of a human child specifically to prevent Izuku and his friends from going mad from her true form]].
* FreakOut: Toshinori has an epic-level freak out when [[spoiler:on the way back from the Summit, Shoto reveals that Aiko is Izuku's sister and their mother is the Ancient of Desire]]. Toshinori gets out of the Katsumobile, drops to the snow, and rolls around while yelling incoherently for a minute.
* TheGadfly: Shoto is not above flustering Izuku and his friends for his personal entertainment. It literally warms his heart to do so, overcoming the drawbacks of his ice magic.
* GodOfEvil: The Ancient of Malice is the one Power whose domain is literal evil.
* GodzillaThreshold: [[spoiler:Izuku triggers his suppression device to force the Ziggurat EldritchAbomination on the run, even though he knows it can have a bad effect on his friends.]] [[spoiler:He has to do it again to fight off Decay, but this time the "bad effect" is catching some very unpleasant attention from the '''Ancient of Desire'''.]]
* GoodBehaviorPoints: A Black Course student, either full student or candidate, can earn Contribution Points by various deeds. Roughly, any deed that positively reflects on a student's ability to survive the magical world, or doing something to the benefit of UA, earns contribution points. Aizawa gives Izuku examples of killing something supernatural, learning a new spell, and surviving a danger zone, but that is far from an exhaustive list. Izuku earned contribution points by successfully convincing Yagi in his personal capacity to investigate a mystery of personal interest to him, his Cabal earned contribution points by ''surviving'' an unexpected danger U.A. was not aware of that is far above their weight class, and bringing a potential attempted hacking to the attention of U.A. also earned them contribution points. After their [[spoiler:Elsewhere]] trip, the Cabal earns so many points that the teachers [[ObviousRulePatch have to lock most of it]] for [[spoiler:"Special Exclusion Zone development"]] to keep them from ''crashing U.A.'s internal economy''.
* GreatOffscreenWar: [[spoiler:The Dawn War, a war so obscure that even Toshinori thought it was a myth. Supposedly, it consisted of humans attempting to rise and fight the Powers and losing. The Mankind Liberation Front seeks to bring down the Censor so as to turn all of humanity into "awakened", people so powerful that they can cause corporeal and sanity damage to Greater Aberrants, so humanity can win the next war.]]
* GutFeeling: Everyone involved with the supernatural has a sixth sense. If they feel like something is wrong, it probably is. If they feel they are in danger, they probably are.
* HateAtFirstSight: Izuku's immediate opinion of Neito Monoma is that he has a "perfectly punchable face".
* HaveIMentionedIAmGay: Lampshaded. Geten is stated by Yagi to be bisexual, but because he's a demihuman whose normal body temperature is -40 degrees Celsius, he doesn't really have the opportunity to enter ''any'' sort of relationship.
* HeldBackInSchool: Some students, usually the demi-human ones, ''choose'' to stay behind in UA because a lot of demi-humans have specific biological needs that UA more easily meets than the general human society. Ibara specifically gives the example of the Frozen Hell zone of UA being the perfect habitat for Cold-Ones, since the other closest suitable habitat for them is in ''the Himalayas''.
* HeroicBSOD:
** After the encounter with the [[spoiler:Dragon of the Desert of Bones]], Himiko is completely shocked and left in terror for several hours. [[spoiler:She's so shaken that it temporarily brings back her pre-ghoul self, who is horrified of all the stuff she's done since her transformation.]]
** PlayedForLaughs for Shoto after he realizes Izuku's influence is causing him to become interested in girls.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: One of the foremost lessons taught to Black Course students is that Initiates don't altruistically help others, but instead act in EnlightenedSelfInterest at best, so they have to do the same. [[spoiler:Backfires because this means that, with no attachment to either the school or other people, Mei has no problem with selling U.A. down the river when the MLF makes a better offer to her.]]
* HonoraryTrueCompanion: Shoto is not an official member of Izuku's Cabal, but he gives them several useful hints and tips and accompanies them on dangerous missions several times, and is, overall, noticed by other Initiates to be associated with them. [[spoiler:After Izuku's ascension as the Fifth Warlord, he joins the team full-time.]]
* HormoneAddledTeenager:
** Izuku gets turned on by Himiko's antics, and the only reason this doesn't get him killed is because Himiko genuinely likes him. He also gets turned on by Ochako wearing a {{Meido}} uniform.
** Izuku's influence causes Shoto to realize he's becoming this.
* HorrifyingTheHorror:
** Himiko is TheDreaded to all students due to her nature. Yagi is TheDreaded to ''Himiko''.
** [[spoiler:The Aberrant that Izuku encountered, that was causing them Corporeal and Sanity damage by its mere presence, is scared away when Izuku suppresses his Desire influence to let his other influence come out.]]
** [[spoiler:When Yagi sees the Greater Aberrant Decay brought to prove a point, it is the ''Greater Aberrant'' that suffers corporeal and sanity damage.]]
** [[spoiler:When Decay shows up right in front of him in the Labyrinth, Izuku deliberately deactivates his mother's influence. Decay (who ''should'' be immune to sanity damage as a Magister) begins to scream in abject terror before a contingency spell warps him away from U.A.]]
* HumiliationConga: Geten's embarrassing defeat via [[FingerPokeOfDoom nose-boop]] does not end with the actual defeat. Shoto shares the details publicly, which results in him becoming a laughingstock and his own sister arranging things so that he has to enter a reminder of the defeat every time he wants to do something on the internet.
* HypnoticEyes: Yagi theorizes that Izuku's Charm requires the girl to look him in the eyes, so he gives Izuku [[BoringButPractical a pair of sunglasses]] to avoid further accidental seduction. Seems to be valid, as several demi-humans simply consider him incredibly attractive when he wears the sunglasses [[spoiler:and the Nightmare of Frost falls for him when she looks into his uncovered eyes]].
* IKnowMortalKombat:
** Izuku's diplomatic skills [[spoiler:which he demonstrates in the Warlords' Summit]] come from his experience as a Dungeon Master and [=LARPer=].
** Shoto tested his plan to ensure Izuku achieves his objectives [[spoiler: at the Warlords' Summit]] by playing it out in Togata's ''TabletopGame/DungeonsAndDragons'' sessions.
* IKnowYourTrueName: Many of the most powerful creatures an Initiate can encounter don't have actual names. The process of giving said creatures a name is said to ground them [[AFormYouAreComfortableWith into more 'conceivable' definitions]].
* INeedAFreakingDrink: After [[spoiler:Izuku accidentally Charms Soma Michiko]], Toshinori takes a long chug from a hip-flask that's clearly not coffee.
* IcePalace: Soma Michiko, the Nightmare of Frost, has one as her base.
* IfOnlyYouKnew: Shoto laughs every time Katsuki calls him a stalker [[spoiler:because he knows that Ochako is both stalking Izuku and a [[RevenantZombie Stalker]]]].
* {{Immortality}}: Magisters can live forever unless killed.
* ImprovisedWeapon: Shoto uses a Coca-Cola can combined with his ice magic as an improvised grenade.
* InSpiteOfANail: Shoto still has a strained relationship with his father despite the fact there is no competition for the Number One hero spot in canon which was the root cause of all their problems in canon.
* InformationBroker: Hagakure Tooru is a student Candidate who is not part of a Cabal who keeps herself afloat by using her invisibility magic to spy on people and sell the information to other people. [[spoiler:Shoto goes to her at the end of Chapter 35 to convince her to join Izuku's Cabal.]]
* InternalReveal:
** Izuku initiates Katsuki to the {{Masquerade}} in Chapter 7.
** [[spoiler:Ochako tells Izuku that she is a Stalker in Chapter 35, mentioning that she nearly attacked and killed him when the Censor kept him from noticing her.]]
** [[spoiler:Izuku tells Tokage in Chapter 39 that Ibara Shiozaki is a demihuman. He expands on this in the following chapter.]]
** [[spoiler:Izuku's Charm ability is openly revealed during the Warlords Summit when Shoto makes it kick in when Izuku and Hypothermia look at each other.]]
** [[spoiler:After the Warlords Summit, Yagi learns that Aiko is Izuku's actual biological sister and their mother is the Ancient of Desire.]]
* IntimateTelecommunications:
** Himiko is very flirtatious with Izuku, and this applies even when they're texting each other.
** [[spoiler:Yaoyorozu Momo and Intelli Saiko have sent scantily-clad and/or suggestive selfies to Shouto.]]
* InvisibleToNormals: The Censor acts to hide all supernatural elements from the {{Muggles}}. Temporary exceptions can be made to allow individuals a choice in joining the supernatural world or not, or to defend themselves from supernatural threats, but that's it.
* IronicEcho: Monoma demands Izuku to send Ibara back to the Black Forest Exclusion Zone, as "it's only just" since Ibara could be a threat to him. Izuku fires back those same words when mentioning that the Special Exclusion Zone is unwillingly hosting the Greater Aberration Monoma's Cabal kicked out of the Black Forest.
* {{Irony}}: Ibara kept her actual [[{{Pun}} nature]] as a dryad hidden from Tokage's Cabal because she was afraid of their reaction. When Izuku reveals this fact, Komori is angry - because she wants to become a dryad and can't believe she had all the answers up close and never got them.
* ItAmusedMe: Shoto hangs around Izuku's Cabal because their antics entertain him. Izuku takes advantage of this by convincing him to come with the group in their assignments and provide certain trivia. Yagi points out to Aizawa that this is legitimate behaviour among Initiates when the latter questions the former on letting Shoto hang out with Izuku's Cabal.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Katsuki is abrasive, kind of a jerk, and prone to come up with insulting nicknames for everyone around him. He's also very loyal to his best friend Izuku to the point that one of the main reasons he becomes a Candidate is helping to protect his friend.
* JerkassRealization:
** PlayedForLaughs. When Izuku sees Shoto treating the AbandonedHospital raid as entertainment and goes to admonish him, he realizes that this is how Katsuki feels when he witnesses his shenanigans.
** PlayedForDrama. After Ochako [[spoiler:reveals that she's a Stalker and all the stuff she's gone through both before and after her death]], Izuku realizes he's been a terrible boyfriend and apologizes to her, promising to do better and asking her to call him out should he backslide.
* KillTheGod:
** Discussed. Demi-Powers are god-like yet theoretically slayable by humanity, it just takes a lot of resources to do and generally considered not worth it unless they are rampaging Disasters. [[spoiler:Shoto explains that due to Aiko being a relatively young god, it is easier to slay her without an equal loss of potential gains from achieving the feat, which is why Izuku's Cabal have to keep her nature a secret from anyone they don't trust or can't keep a secret from anyway or UA would become a battleground for various organizations going after the Outsider of Existence.]]
** [[spoiler:In the past, a human successfully achieved the impossible feat of slaying the ''Ancient of Malice''.]]
* KillerGameMaster: Izuku can be a sadistic Dungeon Master, and Katsuki says letting him be the DM of a TabletopGame/DungeonsAndDragons session is a mistake people make only once.
-->'''Katsuki's Thoughts:''' He still remembers the delighted grin on his face when Deku announced to the group that the mimic they just destroyed was actually the mission-end treasure chest that the BBEG, in the last gesture of defiance, enchanted to appear like a mimic.
* LanguageOfMagic: There are many different supernatural languages, and one of the most particular is Unspeech. To write it, you have to deface other scripts. To read it, your eyes have to be closed. To speak it, you have to use silence. And the supernatural effects it has kick in not when it is read or heard, but when it is forgotten.
* LaserGuidedAmnesia:
** If a non-Initiate is offered a choice to join the supernatural, and they say no, the Censor acts to remove every memory of the event.
** The initial theory of why Izuku has no memory of being Initiated is because someone erased it.
** [[spoiler:Ochako was friends with Izuku and Katsuki when they were children, until her death and resurrection just a year before as a Stalker triggered the Censor Veil and caused the boys to forget about her.]]
* LaughThemselvesSick:
** When Shoto states that he expects Izuku to bring something as weird as the stuff Katsuki brought from his meeting with Hatsume (which includes a ''last-generation military armored car''), Ibara states she doesn't think Izuku can top that. Shoto, Katsuki, and Himiko crack up laughing.
** Shoto's reaction when Ibara nicknames Katsuki "{{Tsundere}}" is to almost die of laughter overdose.
** Himiko went hysterical when she heard one of Monoma's sidekicks was called "Tetsutetsu Tetsutetsu".
* LeonineContract: Before the story started, Shinsou needed to join another, strong Cabal because Himiko was killing off the members of his current one due to them provoking her. Intelli's Cabal was willing to accept him but took advantage of his desperation to make the terms rather unfavourable for him.
* LightIsNotGood: Archon magic may be more beneficial than the other branches, but it has the same PowerAtAPrice problem as all other magic.
* LikesOlderWomen: Shouto hears from Izuku that Katsuki prefers older women. It's one of the reasons why Todoroki sets him up with his elder sister Fuyumi and cousin Moe Kamiji.
* LogicalWeakness: A mirrorgeist can craft highly realistic illusions, but it can be defeated if someone keeps track of their actions, and introducing a completely random element can cause said illusions to fail since the mirrorgeist cannot react instantaneously to it.
* LoopholeAbuse:
** Shoto has actually finished the Black Course in two years, but he remains a student because technically he can remain a student for five full years.
** Defied. After Ibara announces her long-term goal of being impregnated by him, Izuku makes sure to tell his Cabal to not kill Ibara in any way, directly or indirectly, or he will be mad, and makes it apply as broadly as possible to cover potential loopholes. When Himiko remains silent, he realizes his oversight and also adds injuring Ibara in a way that prevents her from either having sex or getting pregnant to the list. When Himiko expresses frustration, he knows his order is ironclad.
** How Shoto gets away with his plan to ensure [[spoiler:Izuku stays a Warlord by tricking Izuku into using his Charm on Soma Michiko, as the bylaws indicate that mind control only counts if it is either done through active magic or by demi-humans or aberrants, and Izuku is human and has no magic that can be used for mind control]].
** [[spoiler:When Overhaul fights Aiko, he manages to take advantage of the fact that she's the Outsider of ''Human'' Existence to overwhelm her by using magic that causes her to be unable to read him as well as she should.]]
* LovecraftLite: The world of ''When Reason Fails'' is very terrifying and Lovecraftian, but the story itself tends towards the humorous.
* MagicAIsMagicA: In spite of explicit unknowable things, actually using magic is straightforward, if risky. Magic spells fall into several categories under a Power's domain, and the spells themselves are consistent in their effects. Ignition for example is a fire-based combat spell that has the drawback of burning the user, and these traits are consistent with each usage.
* MassOhCrap: [[spoiler:The Warlords and their subordinates are shocked when Izuku charms Hypothermia and realise he instantly gained a powerful ally then and there.]]
* MeaningfulName: A Magister's name will always reflect what they are now in some way. Decay, for example, causes things around him to rot; Overhaul can overhaul himself and things around him at will.
* TheMenInBlack: The Supernatural Public Safety Commission, SPSC for short, is the Japanese government body in charge of overseeing supernatural issues. They aren't perfect, if Aizawa's comments on them having never heard the term "due process" is anything to go by, but given the potential damage criminal Initiates can do against non-Initiates, the SPSC are a net benefit to society.
* MercyKill: There is many a FateWorseThanDeath, and in the event that someone is or will suffer such a thing, Initiates will kill the victim since there's nothing else they can do. When they fall into the [[spoiler:Bone Dust Desert Elsewhere]], Shoto tells Izuku (who has shown to be able to NoSell the fake memories effect the others undergo) to save enough bullets just in case this is required.
* MindRape:
** Corporeal damage caused by ''really'' powerful beings tends to have this attached, making those afflicted think nothing's wrong with them. For example, Himiko's transformation into a ghoul changed her morals so she would consider eating humans as natural. [[spoiler:When Shoto loses his nose because of the Dragon from the Desert of Bones, he spends about an hour thinking that humans don't have noses and that the others are pulling one on him.]]
** After the reveal of [[spoiler:Izuku's mother being the Incarnation of the Ancient of Desire]], Shoto tells Izuku never to suppress his secondary influence, as it could end up causing this on anyone by [[spoiler:turning them into people completely addicted to sex]].
* MirrorMonster: One type of Aberrant is called a Mirrorgeist, a monster under the Ancient of Reflections. Its birth requires a premeditated murder in front of a reflective surface, but once born, it lives in the mirror and can cast illusions to trick, or even drive, people to kill each other.
* MoneySink: It takes a lot of Contribution Points to mold the [[spoiler:Special Exclusion Zone]] to the owner's liking. [[spoiler:Fortunately, Izuku's foray into the Bone Dust Desert Elsewhere provides him with a lot of Contribution Points.]]
* MoralEventHorizon: InUniverse. It takes a special kind of evil person to willingly be a cultist of Malice, and everybody else, [[EvenEvilHasStandards even other cultists]], hates them.
* MoreThanMindControl:
** Izuku's Charm ability works by amplifying existing desires in a demihuman girl and making him the target of it.
** Ibara's manipulations of her Cabal involve getting them to do what they want to do anyway, just with slight adjustments to their exact methods so that she gets protected, and that they don't realize she's a Dryad.
* MugglesDoItBetter: Played with. Magic ''is'' useful in combat, but because of the risks involved, Initiates are advised to use conventional weapons when dealing with supernatural threats and save magic as a nuclear option.
* MundaneSolution: Initiates as a whole are advised to seek non-magical means of solving magical problems since using magic themselves comes with risks involved and should be saved as a last resort.
* MutuallyAssuredDestruction: Cabal politics operate by the idea that attacking a member of a Cabal will get the other members to retaliate against the perpetrator, which is why students try to join or form one in the first place. Lone agents are, in theory, free game.
* MythologyGag:
** The magic spells available to an individual tend to be based on the Quirks they had in canon. Shoto has Ice and Fire magic, with a preference for Ice, whereas in canon, he had Half-Hot and Half-Cold. Ochako has gravity magic, and her first spell shares the name of her Quirk in canon. Hagakure has invisibility magic like how in canon, her Quirk makes her invisible.
** Aizawa refers to Shoto as his "problem child".
** Izuku's unique Charm powers is called his "quirk".
** Katsuki's proposed name for the Cabal's fortress [[spoiler:in the Special Exclusion Zone]] is "Fortress of Explosive Murder".
* NaiveNewcomer: Both Izuku and Katsuki join the world of Initiates with little idea of how it works, allowing both of them to act as {{Audience Surrogate}}s and learn about the world they have suddenly discovered.
* NearVillainVictory: [[spoiler:Overhaul almost succeeds in killing Aiko the Outsider of Existence. He was literally seconds away from achieving the feat before Decay's forced retreat thwarts him.]]
* NeverTellMeTheOdds: [[spoiler:Shoto estimates the odds of Izuku's Cabal and Shoto winning against a powerful aberrant to be ''negative'' ten percent. Izuku proceeds to scare it off anyway.]]
* TheNicknamer: Katsuki calls everyone by the nicknames he comes up with.
* NightmareFetishist: Izuku can't help but be aroused by Himiko's ghoulish antics.
* NoKillLikeOverkill: Shoto sends Katsuki to get an all-terrain vehicle for the Cabal. Shoto expects a jeep. Katsuki brings a [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MRAP Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected]] vehicle.
* NoSell:
** Mind-controllers tend to be resistant to mind control due to evolutionary pressures. Yagi is, thus, surprised when Izuku mentions that his Charm affected Ibara, who, as a Dryad, can control minds through spores and should have been resistant.
** [[spoiler:Izuku resists the brainwashing when ''something'' (later revealed to be Aiko) in the Bone Dust Desert Ruins puts a false memory in the Cabal's minds.]]
** {{Downplayed}}. [[spoiler:When Izuku accidentally hits peak Attention from Desire, he somehow manages to resist Desire's attempts to turn him into a demi-human, although he's still transformed into something Nedzu christens "Godling". It's later indicated that his father's influence and the Principality of Mankind are behind this.]]
* NoSocialSkills: Himiko's ability to interact with other people in a normal social setting is severely lacking due to her being friendless before being Initiated and becoming a ghoul that people stay away from afterwards. Izuku thinks her behaviour around him is due to reading a lot of internet hentai and thinking that's how real people act around loved ones.
* NoodleIncident: Whatever happened that caused Shoto to nickname Shiozaki "the Nightmare of Leaves". It is eventually explained that she killed the Warlord of the Black Forest (Monoma's predecessor) and his entire Cabal when they attempted to kill her to use her body for alchemical components.
* NotSoAboveItAll: Katsuki is considered by everyone in Izuku's Cabal as its OnlySaneMan. Then, when tasked to get a vehicle for the team to move around on, he goes and buys an [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MRAP armored military vehicle]].
* NukeEm: Discussed. During their orientation, Yagi mentions to Izuku and Katsuki that sometimes, it takes a nuke to beat an eldritch abomination.
* ObviousRulePatch: Due to how many Contribution Points Izuku's Cabal earns in the aftermath of the AbandonedHospital expedition, the teachers lock most of it for [[spoiler:Special Exclusion Zone development]] to keep them from crashing U.A.'s internal economy.
* OhCrap:
** Izuku's reaction as he realizes [[spoiler:that Soma Michiko has a mothering fetish - and he's now getting the reciprocal fetish after Charming the woman]].
** Decay when [[spoiler:Toshinori completes the ritual transforming him into a Magister]].
** Izuku [[spoiler:when he meets Decay in the Labyrinth]] and [[spoiler:when he realizes that the Ancient of Desire has noticed him]].
* OnlySaneMan: Katsuki, by virtue of being the only one out of Izuku's Cabal with some sort of common sense. Katsuki lampshades the fact several times.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: [[spoiler:Shoto being emotional in spite of his ice magic-induced EmotionSuppression is enough to show how bad a situation is.]]
* OutsideContextProblem: For all his relative experience in the world behind the {{Masquerade}}, Shoto finds himself completely out of his depth [[spoiler:after the Outsider of Existence takes the form of a 10-year-old girl and declares she wants to join them when they return home]].
* ParentalAbandonment: Izuku's father, for unexplained reasons, leaves him alone while he [[spoiler:goes to another dimension to do who knows what]]. He's left behind enough cash to support Izuku financially, but Izuku is still understandably upset.
* PassThePopcorn: Todoroki is prone to bringing out popcorn and cola when he turns to his favorite pastime - watching Izuku and his friends.
* ThePermanentRecord: Aizawa warns Izuku that every bad thing a student Initiate of UA does that's not an expulsion-worthy offense goes on their file.
* PersonaNonGrata: Downplayed. Himiko is not outright banned from the Artificer workshops, but most of them refuse to deal with her and the people she associates with after she murdered one of them in their workshop.
* PersonalityPowers: Justified. Overusing a type of magic causes the spellcaster's personality to change to something stereotypical of that magic. Shoto for example has a cold and aloof personality due to his ice magic influencing him to be so.
* PhysicalGod: Demi-Powers are powerful supernatural entities that are the theoretical limit of what humanity can slay, as long as they are willing to spend a lot of resources to achieve such a feat. [[spoiler:Aiko, the Outsider of Existence is one such being.]]
* PlayingWithFire: Izuku's first spell is a Fire-Based one called Ignition.
* {{Polyamory}}: Himiko decides to solve the love triangle between her, Ochako, and Izuku by suggesting to Ochako that they share Izuku.
* PoorCommunicationKills: [[spoiler:Had Shoto shared his suspicions of Hatsume with a teacher, he could have prevented part of the chaos caused by Decay's attack.]]
* PostModernMagik:
** Mundane technology is heavily used by Initiates, including phones with apps where you can buy magical things, and there's a whole section of the Internet accessible only by Initiates, with Wikipedia entries on the supernatural and heavy usage of social media by Initiates. Izuku is constantly surprised by this.
--->'''Izuku's Thoughts''': Fucking realism. Couldn't Powers make some arbitrary, Harry Potter worldbuilding-level consistent rule that initiates couldn’t use advanced technology? His sense of magical decorum keeps flying out of the window.
** In modern times, the Primordial of Metal's domain has expanded to include plastics.
* PowerAtAPrice: There is ''always'' a cost, usually risk, to using Magic, and this principle is the very foundation of the story's entire magic system. Initiates can trade one set of costs for another set of costs they find easier to pay, but there's no getting rid of it entirely:
** Baseline humans using magic is never without risk. Just ''learning'' spells carries the risk of suffering mental or physical alterations, becoming a demi-human, or even being noticed by the Powers (which is a ''very'' bad thing). Actually ''using'' spells has a greater chance of something going wrong.
** Demi-humans can more freely use the magic of their patron Power's domain, but this comes at the cost of being able to use ''only'' the spells of their patron's domain, and the fact that they develop specific biological needs that are not easily met by normal human society, usually causing them to become detached from humanity.
** Magisters bypass most of the risks in using magic, but actually figuring out how to become one is difficult, and actually succeeding requires a lot of resources and giving up their old name. Plus, when you become one, you lose mental flexibility and gain extra-strength stubbornness, which can easily be detrimental. [[spoiler:According to Aiko, not just anyone can be a Magister either, so those that have no way of checking if they'll succeed are taking a huge risk to begin with.]]
** Izuku's Charm ability is highly useful and is a key factor in his successes, but he eventually realises that each successful usage changes ''him'' to be compatible with an individual target's desires, so he needs to be careful that the changes to him are not ''too'' detrimental.
** [[spoiler:Aiko has the ability to invert the trope. If a human has suffered from the mental changes price of paying for magic, then through her domain, Aiko can help such humans get a ''refund''. The catch though is that they have to give up the spell or spells that contributed to the problem]].
** [[spoiler:Absolute Magic Negation is the ultimate spell of the Archon of Transfiguration. With proper timing, it could one-shot ''Demi-Powers''. The catch is that using it has severe backlash to the user and actually learning it is almost impossible due to the rarity of Transfiguration spellbooks and the fact that by the time a user of Transfiguration is powerful enough to learn it, they are no longer interested since by that point, they were usually not human themselves.]]
* ThePowerOfLove: [[spoiler:Ochako's ability to come back from the dead is due to her love for Izuku turning her into a Stalker. As long as Izuku reciprocates on some level, she will never permanently die.]]
* PowersThatBe: The Powers of the setting are the most powerful supernatural entities and all non-glyph magic and most supernatural entities come from them.
* PropertyOfLove: Ochako is perfectly happy being Izuku's love slave, down to wearing a collar declaring her his property. [[spoiler:By her own words, this is better than the alternatives, as no one outside the cabal who knows she is an undead Stalker will treat her as a human being, and Izuku promises to treat her well to the best of his abilities.]]
* ARareSentence: When Katsuki clarifies with Izuku that the latter wants the former to bring the "mobile pile of nightmare fuel and childhood trauma all the way to the UA, just so you can feed the Frog Face with them and get free frog gacha rolls?", Izuku can only be stunned at the absurdity of the sentence before confirming he wants Katsuki to do just that.
* RealityWarper: [[spoiler:The Warlord who controls the Special Exclusion Zone gets to warp it however they like [[CastFromMoney in exchange for Contribution Points]].]]
* RedBaron: [[spoiler:Decay's Sensei calls Izuku the "Blasphemy-That-Walks".]]
* RefugeInAudacity:
** Himiko killing Bibimi Kenranzaki involves the former walking right into the latter's workshop, mauling her with her own wrench, and dragging her body in front of Bibimi's fellow students who were so shocked by the brazen murder they were too afraid of stopping her.
** Izuku boasts of being so good in bed [[spoiler:that he could make that his specialty as a Warlord - to the other Warlords]]. Then Shoto trumps it by [[spoiler:taking Izuku's glasses off to make him Charm Soma Michiko]].
** After [[spoiler:destroying U.A's communications, stealing the school's private data, and shooting Mr. Maijima]], Mei has the gall to claim she has earned Contribution Points for following the school's teachings about [[spoiler:"looking out for number one" by making a deal with the MLF]].
* RelatedInTheAdaptation: Moe Kamiji is distantly related to the Todorokis in this story instead of being just a sidekick in canon.
* RetGone: People learning from the Ancient of Denial will eventually do this to themselves.
* TheReveal:
** Chapter 19: [[spoiler:Ochako was the one who tried to break into Izuku's house soon after his Initiation]].
** Chapter 25: [[spoiler:Ochako is a specific type of RevenantZombie called a Stalker that was birthed due to her love for Izuku before she died]].
** Chapter 38: [[spoiler:Izuku and Aiko are actual siblings, and their mother is Desire. Not a Demi-Power, the actual ''Ancient'' of Desire]].
** Chapter 43: [[spoiler:Under Shouto's and Izuku's questioning, Aiko clarifies her domain is ''Human'' existence, and it includes demihumans, undead born from humans, and even potential [=AIs=] created by humans, for as long as those that are not outright humans can think like humans. Demihumans that have fully devolved to animal mindsets are not included in her domain]].
** Chapter 49: [[spoiler:Hatsume turns out to be a spy for Decay's organisation, the MLF, and was the one who made the hacking device Izuku's Cabal found after their orientation assignments]].
* RunningGag:
** Katsuki doing or saying something nice, the others reacting in shock and Katsuki screaming at them for being shocked.
** Todoroki bringing out the [[PassThePopcorn popcorn and/or cola]] when Izuku and the others become entertaining.
** Todoroki suddenly showing up while stating he's been there the whole time.
** "[=She/He=] is ignored".
** Katsuki complaining about Izuku being too horny.
** Katsuki {{dope slap}}ping someone.
** People telling Izuku not to do something stupid.
* SafetyInMuggles: A standard way for UA's Initiates students to protect themselves from other students is to hide themselves among the non-Initiate students, even though using the non-Initiate uniforms could lead to their expulsion. U.A.'s rules specifically forbid using magic against the non-Initiate students, and using non-magical means ''will'' be noticed by the non-Initiates and reported to mundane authorities. Doing either anyway will result in expulsion.
* SanityMeter:
** Izuku takes a nasty hit after [[spoiler:looking at the Ziggurat abomination for three seconds as he tries to implement his plan]]. Complete with HeroicBSOD. Toga begins to stutter from her own hit over the same thing.
** Shoto jokingly thinks that being unable to accept and roll with whatever BS Katsuki and Izuku pull off is actively detrimental to sanity.
* SatelliteLoveInterest: Lampshaded. When they have free time, Izuku asks Ochako and Himiko about their hobbies. They struggle to find an answer after Izuku excludes doing his chores, doing sexual activities with him, and meeting basic biological and survival needs. Izuku decides to do his best to change this.
-->'''Izuku''': Are you trying to tell me that I'm your ''only'' hobby whatsoever?
* SchoolIsMurder: UA's education strategy for their student Initiates is to simulate the world of Initiates in miniature on campus. This involves not ''simulating'' danger, but having ''real'' danger. A very significant portion of students die as a result. Part of the reason for this is that the Principal likes watching people struggle.
-->'''Himiko''': Normal courses have graduation rates, Black Course has survival rates. I think it's close to 50% on average. But sometimes entire classes don’t make it.
* TheScottishTrope: Speaking any Magister's name causes a feeling in the air and other effects related to their magic specialisation. Speaking '''Decay's''' name causes a smell of rot, food to spoil, and maggots to appear. Speaking '''Overhaul's''' name causes a feeling of change in the air and a nearby butterfly to revert to the caterpillar stage of a different species of butterfly.
* SensorCharacter: Ochako's powerset includes instinctively knowing where Izuku is no matter the distance.
* ShamelessFanserviceGirl: Ibara goes around naked completely uncaring of this fact. [[spoiler:Komori joins her after becoming a dryad.]] Dryads in general shun clothes because their bodies can photosynthesize and they want to maximise the sustenance they can get from it.
* SharpDressedMan: Shouto manages to wrangle Izuku into a suit. Ochako and Himiko are not shy about EatingTheEyeCandy.
* ShoutOut:
** As seen above, Himiko mentions both ''Literature/HarryPotter'' and ''Literature/TheCallOfCthulhu'' when she reveals that magic exists.
** Izuku and Katsuki have played ''TabletopGame/CallOfCthulhu'' several times, and Izuku also went through ''VideoGame/CallOfCthulhuDarkCornersOfTheEarth''.
** When Izuku meets Ashido, he greets her with [[Film/ANewHope "Hello there"]], while Ashido replies with [[Film/RevengeOfTheSith "General Kenobi"]]. The same is repeated when Katsuki meets Ibara.
** Izuku compares Shiozaki Ibara's Dryad powers with ''Film/TheHappening''.
** When Katsuki rejects going with Izuku to meet Mina to buy magical drugs:
--->'''FAAK:''' [[SkewedPriorities I’m not getting arrested or, worse, expelled]]\
'''[=FireBroccoli=]''': and it’s MY priorities that are messed up? What are you, [[Literature/HarryPotter Hermione Granger]] with anger issues?
** Izuku decides to get Himiko and Ochako to find new hobbies by playing TabletopGame/DungeonsAndDragons.
** Shoto compares Ochako with the player character of ''VideoGame/DarkSouls''.
** When Nedzu tells Aiko [[spoiler:not to reveal what her and Izuku's father is]], he states it's a "[[WesternAnimation/MickeyMouseClubhouse surprise tool that will help [them] later]]".
** Izuku describes [[spoiler:himself]] as half-[[Franchise/{{Warhammer}} Slaanesh]].
** Shouto wears a ''WesternAnimation/PawPatrol''-themed tie [[spoiler:to the Warlords' Summit]].
** In his first appearance, Nedzu shows the VerbalTic of the [[spoiler:[[Franchise/{{Warhammer}} Skaven]]]].
*** When he meets the Principal, All Might hopes that he is more [[Franchise/TeenageMutantNinjaTurtles Master Splinter]] than [[spoiler:Skaven Grey Seer]].
* ShroudedInMyth: Because of the absolute bullshit of Izuku's achievements, there is rampant speculation on what he actually is, with the wildest being he's an alien of a species that's better than humans at magic.
* SideBet: UA's Black Course faculty have a betting pool on how long Izuku will survive. Most of their bets are on the shorter end, like a week. Yagi is the only one confident enough to bet he'll live until at least graduation.
* SimulatedUrbanCombatArea: Two of UA's exclusion zones for their student Initiates are Ghost Town and Labyrinth. The former is designed to be a literal ghost town, and the latter has large parts of it designed to be what can be found below a city.
* SinkOrSwimMentor: As part of UA's educational policy for their student Initiates, specifically during the Candidacy phase, Candidates are left to fend for themselves after receiving their orientation so that the faculty can observe how well they can handle themselves in an environment that the faculty has set up to simulate the adult Initiates world without the worst of the dangers.
* SingleTargetSexuality:
** Ochako loves Izuku, and will only ever love Izuku. [[spoiler:Her coming back from the dead as a Stalker hard-wired her to be obsessed with ''only'' Izuku.]]
** Tsukiko Okuda is stated to be a simp for Sora Michiko.
* TheSleepless: Uraraka Ochako does not need sleep, nor could she sleep at all.
* SmarterThanTheyLook: People are surprised to learn that Tsuyu - in this story a frog demi-human who lives in a lake in U.A. - can speak just fine.
* SpannerInTheWorks:
** Tsuyu giving Izuku a device that is quickly identified as a spying device allows U.A.'s teachers to realize something fishy is going on.
** [[spoiler:Aiko providing Toshinori the knowledge he needs to finish the process allows him to become a Magister when the MLF attacks.]]
** [[spoiler:When the MLF attacks U.A., Overhaul's pincer attack becomes stalled by Aiko, who is strong enough to halt his advance.]]
** [[spoiler:Izuku turning his mother's influence off and on would have normally been ignored - but Toshinori becoming a Magister causes the Powers to pay more attention to U.A.... among them ''Desire'', who turns its eyes to Izuku and causes him to hit peak Attention at the worst possible moment.]]
* StalkerShrine: Ochako's hideout is full of Izuku's pictures.
* StalkerWithACrush: Ochako loves Izuku, and this drives her to steal his things before returning them, keep old things of his that he's forgotten about, and having a lot of pictures of him. [[spoiler:By the standards of her kind, Ochako is actually higher-functioning and incredibly restrained: Stalkers are usually far, ''far'' worse than that.]]
* StealthHiBye: Shouto is so silent that usually people don't know he's there until he starts [[PassThePopcorn eating popcorn]].
* SurroundedByIdiots: One of the reasons why Shoto stays around Izuku's Cabal is that they are all a lot smarter than the average Initiate in spite of not coming from established Initiate families.
* TakeOurWordForIt: Izuku's first attempt to [[spoiler:create a base in the Special Exclusion Zone]] is not described, but Izuku calls it an "abomination in the eyes of gods and humans" and everyone else considers it incredibly lewd.
* TemptingFate: [[spoiler:Sekigai tells Izuku when they first meet before the Summit that she is glad she is no longer the weakest Warlord. Then during the Summit, Izuku gains [[TheDreaded the Nightmare of Frost]] as an ally, instantly leapfrogging all the other Warlords in strength and putting Sekigai back in last place among the Warlords.]]
* TerribleArtist: Katsuki is terrible at drawing, which prevents him from making useful glyphs.
* ThreeWaySex: Izuku has threesomes with Himiko and Ochako.
* {{Tsundere}}: Katsuki is prone to react this way whenever someone (mostly Izuku) asks him to do something. Ibara decides to call him "Tsundere" in retaliation for him nicknaming her "Pregnancy Fetishist".
* ToWinWithoutFighting: [[spoiler:Izuku's position as an independent Warlord is secured when Shoto makes him charm Soma the Nightmare of Frost, a Cold-One so powerful she is rumoured to be able to fight weaker Magisters. The deterrence factor of an ally as powerful as her makes the other Warlords back off on trying to force Izuku to just give the wealth of his Exclusion Zone to them.]]
* TooDumbToLive:
** UA's Black Course Curriculum, for both full students and candidates, are designed so that dangers are survivable as long as people are smart about how they do things. In theory, if a student initiate ''does'' die, it's because they did something stupid. However, the system doesn't always work as intended.
** Himiko's modus operandi is to lure unsuspecting Student Initiates to her lair where she kills them. Anyone who actually lets her do that in spite of the obvious red flags is deemed idiotic and deserving of their deaths by everybody else. When Izuku subverts expectations by ''not'' getting killed when ''he'' got lured, it draws attention to him, as sparing any prey she catches is highly unusual on Himiko's part.
* TotalPartyKill: Months before the story started, a Cabal tried to take out Himiko. They failed and she single-handedly destroyed the Cabal in retaliation. Only one of the five members of the Cabal survived, and Hitoshi only managed that by joining Intelli's Cabal under unfavourable terms.
* TradeSnark: Yagi vocalizes the TM when he mentions Aizawa has a traumatic backstory to his personality and overall performance as a teacher. Izuku mentally lampshades it.
* UncertainDoom: Mashirao Ojiro simply vanished. Nothing was found, but people are reasonably certain Himiko killed him. They just can't find any proof of it.
* TheUndead:
** Undeads are a thing, both naturally occurring like ghosts and unnaturally occurring like the worm-thralls created by Decay.
** [[spoiler:Uraraka is a type of undead called a Stalker, created due to her love for Izuku before she died.]]
* UniqueProtagonistAsset:
** As a result of Izuku's supernatural parentage, he has the ability to Charm female demihumans. No other human Initiate has demonstrated this ability.
** Another result of Izuku's supernatural parentage is that it is easy for him to learn spells, and due to years of exposure from proximity to him, so does Katsuki [[spoiler:and Ochako]]. Normally, it takes an Initiate several spell books to learn a single spell. The boys each can learn magic from a single spell book.
* UnluckilyLucky: Izuku's luck is high, and this results in a string of good and bad things happening. To begin with, the Censor simply stops working for him, thrusting him into the deep end of the magic world, which is bad. He then encounters Himiko Toga who could help him, which is good. She takes him to her lair with the intention of killing and eating him, which is bad. Along the way, she decides she's thirstier instead of hungrier and decides to actually help the boy she finds cute with the absolute basics, which is... better. And all of that is just ''the first chapter''.
* UnspokenPlanGuarantee: Shoto deliberately doesn't tell Izuku about his plan for [[spoiler:the Warlords' Summit]] because of this trope. [[spoiler:Given that his plan consisted on taking Izuku's sunglasses off so he would Charm Soma Michiko, there was a clear reason why.]]
* VictoryByEndurance: Himiko can kill Ochako, but it just won't stick. In spite of Himiko's own strength and skill, Ochako can and will outlast her eventually, so to solve their love triangle with Izuku, Himiko is forced to resort to something other than murder.
* VillainHasAPoint: [[spoiler:Toshinori agrees that the MLF could have the right of it in their aims, and acknowledges that, if they had presented their findings in a peaceful meeting, he might have even ''joined'' them. But since (a) they shot their way into U.A., killing several Black Course students and candidates, and (b) they won't take "no" for an answer, he becomes their enemy.]]
* VillainRespect: [[spoiler:Decay could have easily wiped the floor with Todoroki and Izuku's Cabal, even with his self-imposed handicaps, so the fact that not only did they manage to survive a fight for two minutes, but also caused damage to him, was enough for Decay to let them go, as promised.]]
* VisualPun: When Shoto examines the stuff Tsu gives Izuku, he examines a screw and thinks it once belonged to Katsuki and the Censor made him forget he lost it. Katsuki is baffled until he realizes Shoto is saying he has a screw loose.
* VitriolicBestBuds: Izuku and Katsuki's relationship is 50% based on insulting each other.
* WeirdCurrency: The Contribution Points a Black Course student earns can be redeemed for yen or used to buy things on the official school online shop, which gives them real value among the students and is the basis of the internal economy of UA's Black Course.
* WeirdnessMagnet: Things just ''keep'' happening around Izuku, which is repeatedly lampshaded by everyone near him. By Chapter 40, Katsuki and Shoto have acknowledged that ''anything'' they might do will almost immediately be topped by whatever bullshit the Midoriya Experience brings in.
-->'''Shoto:''' Midoriya, riddle me this. How the hell did hanging out with you for less than three weeks made me see and hear more unbelievable things than three years of being an ace student in Japan’s best magic school?
** To start, the Censor inexplicably stops reading him as a non-Initiate. This quickly gains him the attention of Himiko, a ghoul known to kill any Initiate dumb enough to follow her - only for her to ''not'' kill him.
** He is attacked on his first night as an Initiate by something that is specifically after him.
** He discovers that his father is a very powerful Initiate and that his mother was possibly a being of Desire [[spoiler:later indicated to be the ''Ancient'' of Desire]].
** Tsuyu, the Frog of the Lake, approaches him, allowing him to discover she's smart enough to talk, and a trade with her leads to the discovery of an espionage attempt on U.A.
** An attempt to obtain alchemical drugs has them encounter Geten, a Cold-One, that they succeed in driving off with one of Izuku's plans.
** The capstone is the Gunga Mountain Hospital expedition. Everything is going on normally, but then the mutated orderlies begin to attack the group. [[spoiler:When they try to escape, they accidentally fall into an Elsewhere. The group heads into a ruined city with a Ziggurat, where they encounter and defeat a Greater Aberrant. Then they free and befriend a young Demi-Power who takes the form of a pre-teen girl (and later reveals she's Izuku's full sister). Said Demi-Power takes them to U.A. in exchange of going with them and sharing the secret of how to become a Magister, only to take them to U.A.'s mythical Special Exclusion Zone, which leads to Izuku becoming U.A.'s Fifth Warlord.]]
** It doesn't let up during the [[spoiler:Warlords Summit, as he manages to prove himself to the other Warlords - and then Shoto tricks him into using his Charm on Soma Michiko, gaining her as an ally and pretty much pushing Izuku to the top place among the Warlords]].
** And it continues during [[spoiler:the Mankind Liberation Front attack. When Izuku and his friends take refuge in the Labyrinth, Decay revives just in front of them after being killed by All Might, forcing Izuku to once more block his Desire influence to defeat him - only, this time doing so causes him to catch the attention of the Ancient of Desire. And then he avoids being turned into a demi-human due to his primary influence, which stops the transformation - and then disappears in exchange for Desire only turning Izuku into what the Principal coins a "Godling", the first of his kind]].
* WhamEpisode:
** Chapter 27: [[spoiler:Izuku's Cabal ending up in an Elsewhere and they can't go back the way they came]].
** Chapter 30: [[spoiler:Izuku befriends a Demi-Power called the Outsider of Existence whom he names Aiko]].
** Chapter 31: [[spoiler:Aiko takes Izuku's Cabal home, but due to a miscommunication, she takes them to UA's mythical Special Exclusion Zone]].
** Chapter 38: [[spoiler:Aiko reveals that she and Izuku are ''actual'' siblings, and that their mother is the ''Ancient of Desire'']].
** Chapter 49: [[spoiler:Decay and Overhaul (who work for an organization known as MLF) attack U.A. to capture Toshinori for an unknown purpose, several Candidates are killed, and Hatsume turns out to be TheMole]].
** Chapter 50: [[spoiler:Decay reveals that the Mankind Liberation Front seeks to find how to empower all of humanity to fight and defeat the Powers, and Toshinori (after discovering he can cause sanity and corporeal damage to aberrants) becomes a Magister and kills Decay]].
** Chapter 51: [[spoiler:Overhaul nearly kills Aiko. Izuku encounters Decay in the Labyrinth and unleashes his primary aura on him - only to accidentally get Attention from his mother (AKA the ''Ancient of Desire''). He only avoids being turned into a demi-human through another entity's intervention]].
** Chapter 52: [[spoiler:Izuku was an awakened human who somehow held influences from the Ancient of Desire and the (long-deceased) Ancient of Malice, but has been transformed into something else entirely. And Hisashi Midoriya is revealed to be Sensei, the leader of the Mankind Liberation Front.]]
* WhamLine:
** The ending of Book One ends with one:
-->'''Decay:''' If I may ask... why are you so interested in [Midoriya Izuku], Sensei?\
'''Sensei:''' What a funny thing to ask about, Decay. [[spoiler:What sort of person wouldn’t be interested in the well-being of their son?]]
* WhamShot:
** Chapter 1 begins when Izuku realizes that Himiko's uniform is black instead of the usual brown.
** [[spoiler:Shouto showing Katsuki a photo of him, Izuku, and Ochako in the latter's birthday party, showing that he actually knew her personally and that there's something really wrong with her now.]]
** Chapter 51 hits it big [[spoiler:when Izuku hallucinates seeing a huge figure towering over him... one that he knows is the ''Ancient of Desire'']].
* WhatMeasureIsANonHuman: Demi-humans, unless they are clearly intelligent and capable of defending themselves, are barely considered human - and even then, many demi-humans are treated as little more than pets by the Initiates they joined.
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: Katsuki has a marked fear of spiders. Izuku doesn't tell him that the creatures they have to kill for their first combat assignment are hand-sized mimic spiders [[ItAmusedMe just to see his reaction when he finds out]].
* WillfullyWeak: [[spoiler: Decay was seriously sandbagging during his fight with Izuku's Cabal, as he was under orders to not kill any of them. He masks this under an offer to seriously restrain what he can do in a fight, and limiting the time to two minutes.]]
* WolfInSheepsClothing: Ochako is a gentle girl when Izuku is nearby. If he isn't, she turns into a first-degree StalkerWithACrush {{Yandere}}.
* WorfEffect: [[spoiler:Overhaul nearly killing Aiko demonstrates that, for all her power, there are still things that can surpass her due to her lack of experience.]]
* WrongContextMagic:
** [[spoiler:Ochako as a Stalker breaks multiple established facts about her kind, which Shoto finds incredibly fascinating. Firstly, she bonded to Izuku while he was a non-Initiate, which should have been impossible - Shoto thinks that it could only have happened due to Izuku's own supernatural nature. Next, because Izuku was a non-initiate, Ochako was reduced to a state of berserk starvation due to being unable to recharge herself properly due to the Censor blocking her from being close and affectionate with Izuku, and it should have been impossible for her to recover from that state. But she did, and Katsuki thinks it's because Izuku is a NightmareFetishist: he may have been scared when Ochako tried to break into his home after his Initiation, but he was also curious about seeing her again, and this gave her just enough clarity and power to break into UA and approach Izuku normally, opening the door for normal contact and constant recharges. The biggest impossibility, though, is that Ochako is one of the most higher-functioning Stalkers Shoto has ever seen: normally, [[{{Yandere}} Stalkers want their Bonded all to themselves and try to drive off everybody else]], but not only is she fine with Izuku having friends (which, while rare, is documented), she is okay with sharing Izuku with Himiko. Normally, someone else getting close to their Bonded in that way should have driven the Stalker to murderous rage out of jealousy, but while Ochako ''does'' feel murderous, she ''does not act on it'', a complete abnormality for her kind. It is later revealed that her abnormal restraint is due to the guilt and shame of almost murdering Izuku due to a misunderstanding caused by them being non-Initiates, and these feelings led to her prioritizing ''Izuku's'' happiness above all else, even her own wants.]]
** Ashido Mina's magic is that of the Primordial of Water, which is why Shouto is confused that she throws ''acid'' around. He has various theories on how this is possible ranging from her receiving a blessing from a Demi-Power or Gift from the Primordial in question, to suffering from some combination of corporeal and sanity damage that altered her perception of her own magic.
* {{Yandere}}: Himiko and Ochako can both get literally murderous out of jealousy of the other getting close to Izuku. Ochako has at least once tried to kill Himiko over it. Himiko actually succeeded, but Ochako's nature meant the death didn't stick.
* YouHaveGotToBeKiddingMe:
** Shouto's reaction when he asks Izuku ''how'', in the thirty minutes since the group was forced to split up, he has managed to find himself [[spoiler: with a god in the guise of a 10-year-old girl sitting on his lap, calling him "oniichan" and eating his bento]].
** Yagi's answer to Izuku's tale about the group's expedition to the AbandonedHospital.
--->'''Toshinori Yagi:''' Young Midoriya, you were sent to pick up some ''plants''. How did you end up [[spoiler: visiting ''two'' different dimensions]] in the process?!
** Katsuki's reaction when Shoto unveils his grand plan for the Warlords' Summit: [[spoiler: have Izuku Charm Soma Michiko]].
* YouRemindMeOfX: Aiko initially reminds Izuku of Shoto because of her {{Literal Minded}}ness. Shoto makes the same comparison later.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:''Book Two'']]
!!Note. Spoilers for ''Book One'' will be unmarked.
* AbsurdlyPowerfulStudentCouncil: Post-timeskip, the Warlords become an official part of UA's education strategy and are involved in the whole process. Izuku notes that are now functionally the equivalent of a student council and carry a disproportionate amount of power in the school. They even control significant amounts of military hardware.
* AchievementsInIgnorance:
** The UA Expedition to the Desert of Bones Elsewhere reveals that the significance of what Izuku's Cabal accidentally achieved in their Elsewhere trip is so much deeper than initially thought in Book One. [[spoiler:The Ziggurat they entered was once dedicated to the ''Ancient of Malice'' and horrific things happened there before his death. The room with the altar they found Aiko in? It contained ''the declaration of war of the First Dawn War''.]]
** [[spoiler:Aiko accidentally spoils the Mankind Liberation Front's attempts to get Detnerat's support just by showing up at Deika and revealing to Rikiya and Tatsuma she is the Outsider of ''Human'' Existence, which leads to Tatsuma concluding that the actions of the front are in contradiction to their espoused ideology and even very name.]]
* ActuallyPrettyFunny: Even the demihumans of the Cabal thought that the bigoted Yoshihiro's prank on the demihuman Komori was funny.
* AdaptationalHeroism:
** Detnerat is a proper legitimate company instead of being led by terrorists in secret.
** Rika Hirabayashi the HPSC President tends to be a villain in Mirrond's other stories. Here, she is not a villain and while she still does some unsavoury things, they are for the better due to the eldritch setting not giving her better options.
* TheAlibi: Himiko is cleared of suspicion in Sen Kaibara's murder since Izuku has video evidence she was with him during the attack.
* AllForNothing:
** Katsuki is ''very'' upset that all the political manoeuvring for the wealth of the Special Exclusion Zone became retroactively pointless when Nedzu extends the reality-warping features to the other exclusion zones during the time-skip.
** [[spoiler:The Mankind Liberation Front did a lot of horrible things out of a belief it will all be worth it when they free humanity from the Powers. Book 2's various reveals however show that what they are doing is in fact not just pointless but ''counter-productive''. They cannot make every human an Awakened Human, and in fact, they are being manipulated by the Incarnation of Malice to help him revive the Ancient of Malice.]]
* AmbiguousSituation: [[spoiler:Are the Ancients remnants of a decimated army like Nedzu thinks or is that complete bullshit like Malice says? Nedzu thinks Malice is too prideful to confirm if Nedzu is correct but admits Malice's interpretation is also completely valid.]]
* BaitAndSwitchComment: When Izuku reveals he has security cameras in his rooms that prove Himiko is innocent of a murder that just happened, All Might clearly suspects Izuku keeps them to make sex tapes. Izuku's narration shows he's aghast about the accusation - if he wanted sex tapes, then he'd get himself a decent camera capable of recording audio and put it in a proper place!
* BecameTheirOwnAntithesis: The Celestial demihumans as a species have this as a problem. At their base, they are intelligent, focused, confident, charismatic, and with a tendency to be kind and empathetic. However, after suffering any trauma, no matter how small, their virtues flip into Flaws. Kindness flips into cruelty, patience into rage, and so on. A Flawed Celestial can be more dangerous than a ''Ghoul'' under these circumstances.
* BigDamnHeroes: Asa first meets Rini when she appears out of nowhere to save him from being devoured by a Greater Aberrant.
* BlatantLies: Ochako denies responsibility for spiking Himiko's food with the world's hottest chili pepper even though there are only three people who could have done it and Ochako is the only one of the three with the motive to do it.
* BreadEggsMilkSquick: [[spoiler:When Malice meets Famine]], the latter offers the former mundane things like cigars and whiskey before also offering the blood of the innocent or the tears shed by children who witnessed their parents being brutally murdered.
* TheBusCameBack: [[spoiler:Hatsume appears in Chapter 81, a full thirty chapters after her last appearance in Chapter 51 when she escaped UA with the rest of the Mankind Liberation Front.]]
* ButICantBePregnant: [[spoiler:Izuku is caught off-guard when he learns Michiko is pregnant since humans like him and Cold-Ones like her normally can't crossbreed, but Izuku forgot to take into account he is the Godling of ''Desire'', and Desire's domain includes Fertility.]]
* CaughtMonologuing: [[spoiler:Toxicity takes advantage of Hitoshi's long-winded villain monologue to set off her grenades in an attempt to escape him.]]
* ChekhovsGun: The identity of Izuku and Aiko's father that Nedzu told Aiko to keep secret in Book 1 is revealed in Book 2. [[spoiler:He's the actual Ancient of Malice.]]
* ChekhovsGunman: Early in Book 2, there are several references to a group called Inalco, which is stated to be a group established by the Nazis that had escaped to {{Argentina|IsNaziland}}. [[spoiler:The Mankind Liberation Front hires Inalco's mercenaries when they assault U.A.]]
* ChekhovsSkill: Aiko reveals in Book 1 that she has the ability to undo an Initiate's corporeal damage by taking out the spells that caused the corporeal damage from their mind, which she uses with Shoto. [[spoiler:When an Inalco Magister threatens to kill Ko, she instinctively does it on him, causing the guy to fall apart because magic is ''everything'' to a Magister's existence.]]
* {{Cliffhanger}}: Chapter 99 ends with [[spoiler:the narration revealing that the Mankind Liberation Front is hours away from launching their second attack on UA]].
* ContentWarnings: Chapter 70 begins with a warning about someone being mean to someone else with autism.
* ContinuityNod: Oracle references Mineta's quick death at the hands of Himiko back in Book 1 after the Jakku Hospital arc.
* ControlFreak: The Disaster of Control is a deity that ''literally'' embodies the very concept of the trope. Any human victim of the Demi-Power has every trace of free will destroyed and the result is a human-shaped drone.
* CosmicRetcon: Discussed. [[spoiler:Because the Ancients existed outside the linear timeline and were acausal in nature, the original rebel priests of Malice realise that the Ancients could easily squash their rebellion by making it never happen to begin with. The fact that they didn't implies that something is stopping the Ancients, something that can give the human rebels ''an actual chance'' of winning against them.]]
* CosplayCafe: Defied. The UA Staff pre-emptively denies Izuku the chance to have a Demihuman Maid Cafe for the UA Cultural Festival.
* CriticalStaffingShortage:
** Unlike other Warlord Cabals, due to Izuku's Cabal being a relatively new one, they are sorely lacking in management manpower. Out of their few members, only Izuku, Katsuki and Maina have management capabilities, meaning they have to do most of the management requirements expected of a Warlord Cabal. Izuku is hoping to recruit Inasa and his friend Shishikura to help partially ease the burden.
** Similarly, Juzo Honnenuki who has been appointed to be the Warlord of the Labyrinth is also suffering from a deficiency of capable management manpower. This is largely due to two reasons. A lack of people interested in permanently staying in the Labyrinth, and his difficulty in shaking off peoples' perceptions that he didn't earn his position as a Warlord due to the teachers being the one to select him from the volunteers that put their names forward.
* CurbStompBattle:
** [[spoiler:Izuku manages to defeat the Spider in the Forest of Red in thirty seconds flat.]]
** Izuku's and Hatsume's battle upon their reunion is completely one-sided in Izuku's favour.
** [[spoiler:When Darkness/Tokoyami joins the fray against the Inalco forces, the latter gets massacred in short order.]]
* DarkerAndEdgier: Where Book 1 has a lot of light-hearted stuff and things working out for the best with no on-screen deaths of named characters, Book 2 reminds the audience that the setting is still Lovecraftian and people ''can still die'' even in the best-case scenario, such as [[spoiler:Asa's Cabal losing Juggernaut during the Jakku Hospital Incident]]. [[spoiler:The final chapter of Book 2 reveals that there is an InUniverse metaphysical reason for this. The climax of Book 1 was Izuku becoming the Godling of Desire and the foreshocks of that resulted in the indulgence and fulfillment of desires, including the desire for things to work out for the best. The climax of Book 2 includes Asa becoming the Godling of Malice and the foreshocks of that caused spikes in hatred, anger, and general malice.]]
* DeadMansSwitch: Ketsubutsu equips all staff and students with tracking chips because they are located in a forest where people can easily get lost. They also monitor the lifesigns of the people equipped with them, which turns out to be useful when the Mankind Liberation Front attacked them since their systems noticed a large enough percentage of staff had their signals flatline, prompting the issuance of an automatic message telling all students to run, reducing the potential casualties of the attack.
* DeathByAdaptation:
** [[spoiler:Kaminari Denki commits suicide under suspicious circumstances that imply he was mind-controlled into doing it.]]
** Sen Kaibara is murdered in a way to frame Himiko for it.
** [[spoiler:Inasa and Shishikura are killed by a Flesh Cultist during the battle of Jakku Hospital]].
** [[spoiler:Setsuna Tokage dies when the Mankind Liberation Front launches an all-out attack on U.A. Other casualties of the attack include Geten and Komori.]]
* DecapitationPresentation: [[spoiler:Izuku shows off Garaki's head on a silver platter to the SPSC President that one of her subordinates confirms is the real one's head.]]
* DeityOfHumanOrigin:
** Tatsuma is a former mortal Initiate who successfully became a Demi Power called the Ascendant of Greed. She's easily more powerful than the Demigod of Darkness and Aiko thinks even Nedzu would have a tough time, and it took ten Magisters just to stall him.
** [[spoiler:Overhaul becomes the Ascendant of Change after the events of Book 1.]]
* DestinationDefenestration: Izuku finds out [[spoiler:Inalco is attacking U.A.]] when Geten gets tossed into his room through the window.
* DidYouJustFlipOffCthulhu: Played with since it was unintentional in both cases.
** Nedzu mentions that there used to be a place called the Republic of Ankrypt that was powered by the Heart of Ankrypt. The Heart is actually a piece of Malice's corpse and Nedzu knew Malice would ''hate'' that his power was used to do ''good'', like power orphanages.
** [[spoiler:Izuku stepped over a piece of Malice's corpse while giving Tsu a better life for complete selfless reasons, spitting in Malice's metaphorical face with actions antithetical to his domain.]]
* DidYouJustRomanceCthulhu: Tatsuma is a dragon goddess and she is ''[[DidntSeeThatComing dumbfounded]]'' All Might genuinely wants to romance her.
* DidYouJustScamCthulhu: Played with since it was one eldritch being doing it to another. [[spoiler:Malice genuinely managed to outplay Mankind by hiding Asa's existence when Mankind and Desire negotiated the rules that led to the birth of Godlings, allowing Asa to potentially become the Godling of Malice in spite of being the Godling of a dead Power.]]
* DidntSeeThatComing:
** Asa's Cabal ran into a ''Terminal Warlock'' in their first dungeon run, something not even Aiko, Izuku or All Might saw coming as they all thought the stories of Tokoyami were just rumours.
** The student operation to subjugate the Blood Hornets was well-planned. When submitted to the teachers, they only had to make minor corrections. The operation goes sideways when Spider from the Forest of Red shows up and attacks their supply lines.
** Asa's Cabal, Aiko, and Izuku are all dumbfounded when [[spoiler:that not only is Rai's brother Maki, a notable member of the SPSC's Anti-Demihuman Death Squad, supportive of Rai's involvement with the Green Course and the Green Course in general, he married a ''Sludge'' and had a child with her]].
** Downplayed example. The forces fighting the Disaster of Control are caught off guard by the fact its puppets are using military ordnances themselves, but they did plan for various unforeseen surprises. It just means that casualties will be higher than they hoped.
** The SPSC and UA Interns tasked with garrisoning Jakku Hospital are caught by surprise by the discovery said hospital is the headquarters of a murderous Cult of Flesh.
** All Might is very surprised that the choice of location the Ascendant of Greed picks for their date is a down-to-earth bar. Said Ascendant, Tatsuma, has a lot of fun messing with people who expect certain things regarding her tastes after hearing her domain.
** Tatsuma in turn is dumbfounded All Might came wanting it to be a ''proper'' date instead of just a meeting where he learns occult knowledge.
** [[spoiler:Inalco's forces are shocked that Darkness/Tokoyami came to U.A.'s aid while they're attacking. While they knew they were there, Inalco thought the Demi Power and Terminal Warlock wouldn't have intervened.]]
* DivineDate:
** Ko, a mortal Demihuman, decides to go on a date with Aiko, a Demi Power, after the Blood Hornets are dealt with.
** Aiko sets up a date between her father All Might and Ko's aunt Tatsuma, who is a Demi Power titled the Ascendant of Greed.
* DivineParentage: Asa, being quickly revealed to be Izuku's and Aiko's sibling, shares their Incarnation of Desire mother. [[spoiler:Their ''father'' is ''Malice himself''.]]
* DramaPreservingHandicap: Invoked. Nedzu tells Aiko that she can do things around UA, but not to the point where people realise she's a Demi Power. She has to maintain the cover story that she's only a talented mage of the Lore of Mercy, severely limiting her options for obvious action. Subtle uses of her abilities as a Demi Power that people don't notice is fine though.
* DramaticIrony: [[spoiler:The Mankind Liberation Front believe themselves to be humanity's saviors, but they're actually dancing to the Incarnation of Malice's strings and succeeding at what they're doing will in fact be bad for humanity as it would result in the revival of the Ancient of Malice.]]
* DrivenToSuicide: The Disaster of Despair drives its victims to kill themselves.
* TheDreaded:
** Terminal Warlocks are feared because the contractor and the Demi-Power has merged and it takes, at minimum, a Magister to beat them.
** After the TimeSkip, Izuku has earned himself this status - to the point that Katsuki, his best friend, claims that Izuku has become U.A.'s true boss monster, even above the Nightmares.
* EldritchAbomination: Serpentine Hound of the Black Forest is a Greater Aberrant that lounges around near the former Ketsubutsu campus. It's described as a mix of a Great Dane and an Irish Wolfhound, large, and with black fur. Asa noted its facial proportions were ''off'' without being able to describe how. Its method of hunting its prey, humans, is to stalk them while seemingly not moving at all until it gets close enough which is when it stands up, but like a human would, not a dog would, before it reveals its neck and mouth can extend like a snake's, hence the Serpentine part of its name, which it then uses to devour its victims.
* EpicFail: Haru Toyoda investigates a hospital and finds nothing wrong there. Thing is, it is ''the headquarters of a Cult of Flesh''. Every single staff member is part of that cult. Upon discovery, multiple people independently of each other wish to inflict horrific pain on Haru for endangering them with his incompetence.
* EveryoneCanSeeIt: It's clear to the rest of their cabal how much Asa and Rini mean to each other, to the point they assumed they were together to begin with.
* EveryoneHasStandards: As much as All Might loves his son, he has to draw a line somewhere for Izuku's sexual activities, and that line is no summoning Lesser Aberrants if the purpose is to have sex or any sort of sexual activity.
* {{Facepalm}}: Izuku and Katsuki slap their foreheads in unison when they learn Tokoyami became a Terminal Warlock because the Demigod of Darkness ''misinterpreted Tokoyami's edgy poetry about loving darkness and wanting to become one with it''.
* FantasticLegalWeirdness: Supernatural bodies are completely at liberty to use chemical weapons against supernatural threats. After all, the supernatural threats are not signatories to any treaties declaring their use a war crime.
* FantasticRacism:
** Post time-skip, UA implements reforms, which include the Green Course, where attempts are made to integrate demihumans of more adjusted species into human society and address the mutual prejudice to defy this trope. Demihumans that actively prey on humans, like ghouls not named Himiko, are still kill-on-sight though.
** Miyuki Tagawa has been bullied in Seiai over her being a practitioner of the Lore of Filth.
* FateWorseThanDeath: [[spoiler:One Inalco Squad Leader is dismembered and beheaded by Asa, but when Asa shows his head to Shinsou, it turns out he is still alive and wishing for death.]]
* FisherKing: Played with. Because of Izuku's well-known sexual activities, people ''assume'' his Exclusion Zone is the best place to be to have sex, find love, and have a social life. Izuku himself is baffled by the assumption, but the end result is that the Special Exclusion Zone becomes what people assume it to be as a result of the SelfFulfillingProphecy.
* FlatWhat: Juggernaut gives a "what" when he learns that UA has litRPG Dungeons for student training.
* ForWantOfANail: The Mankind Liberation Front attacking the Ketsubutsu, Isamu, and Seiai schools results in the governing body sending the surviving students UA's way.
* {{Foreshadowing}}:
** Two things added up to foreshadow the Chapter 100 reveal that [[spoiler:Overhaul has become an Ascendant. Firstly, he was given a higher threat rating than the other MLF Magisters at the end of Book 1 for classified reasons. Secondly, the proud Tatsuma, the Ascendant of Greed, even though she disliked Overhaul, still treated him as an equal even as she declared she and Detnerat will not cooperate with the Mankind Liberation Front]].
** Two things combined foreshadowed the Chapter 101 reveal that [[spoiler:the Special Exclusion Zone is carved out of the extradimensional corpse of Malice. One is that the Special Exclusion Zone is the only place in U.A. to have a curfew so no one is outside at midnight. The other is that Malice's sacred time is ''midnight''.]]
** Several things big and small foreshadowed the Chapter 105 reveal that [[spoiler:Rini is actually Asa's LiteralSplitPersonality. When Aiko first met and saw them together, she immediately realised something special about them. When Asa describes how they first met, he mentions something deep inside him broke right before the Serpentine Hound could eat him and Rini appears out of nowhere to save him in the nick of time, with Asa never connecting the dots. Aiko also outright says Rini's claim of being a demihuman are completely false. There's also their overall interactions where Rini simply hates being apart from Asa, is fiercely loyal to him to lengths considered extreme, and her own moods are highly dependent on Asa's.]]
* FrameUp: Book Two features murders that are done in such a way that the investigators suspect the demihuman population is being framed.
* FreakOut: After All Might learns from Aiko that the new student Asa Shigaraki is her and Izuku's brother, All Might ends up ''begging'' for something to prevent more WeirdnessMagnet moments, because he believes the teachers (including himself) might end up being DrivenToSuicide from the accumulated bullshit.
* FusionDance: A Terminal Warlock happens when a Warlock and their Demi-Power merges. Fumikage Tokoyami is an example of a Terminal Warlock, having merged with the Demigod of Darkness, and neither knows where one ends and the other begins.
* TheGadfly: Hanako and Avalon have a lot of fun freaking out Asa's Cabal with rules based on creepypastas when they first arrive at the Green Tower.
* GenghisGambit: Discussed. Aiko wishes she thought of giving Asa's Cabal a common enemy to unite them against when they were first starting out.
* GotMeDoingIt: Mina's habit of referring to Initiate things as "spicier x" has spread to other characters, including Rai who never met her when he calls [[spoiler:taking care of his brother's kid, a baby sludge demihuman, as a "spicier tamagotchi"]].
* HalfHumanHybrid: Humans and Lesser Aberrants can have children together and the resulting offspring are called Cambions. The SPSC has an official program for picking up Cambions, especially if the human did not give informed consent to having sex with a Lesser Aberrant.
* HappilyAdopted: All Might fully embraces his role as Izuku's and Aiko's adoptive father, complete with adoption paperwork, and the two adore him.
* HardTruthAesop: All Might tells Izuku after the Blood Hornets subjugation mission suffered casualties due to an element ''no one'' predicted is not his fault, because sometimes, casualties simply aren't avoidable and that's the sort of world they live in. The best they ''can'' do is minimise casualties to the best of their abilities.
* HelicopterParents: Discussed. UA has a solution for students with overbearing parents. Telling them to fuck off. UA manages to get away with that because they're not financed by the families of the students but by the Principal's own assets and support from the SPSC.
* HomosexualReproduction: Discussed. Aiko explains she is perfectly capable of making it so two girls can have a child together.
* IHatePastMe: The Ascendant of Murder hates his mortal self, the Zodiac Killer, citing he was a complete disappointment compared to the other high-profile murderers and serial killers.
* IfItsYouItsOkay: Izuku's sexual preferences lean strongly towards women, but he does have intimate relations with a male Cold One named Imai Mikio since male Cold Ones are very feminine in appearance.
* IfOnlyYouKnew:
** Asa's Cabal wish they never meet another Demi-Power after their encounter with the Demigod of Darkness, not knowing their guide Aiko is one herself.
** All Might laughs his ass off when Izuku thinks Tatsuma is an ordinary Initiate, not an Ascendant.
** [[spoiler:When he first learns of the Ancient of Famine, All Might comments that Famine and Nedzu, the Demigod of Rats, would be great friends, which Nedzu cheerfully agrees to. Nedzu clearly had a lot of fun when All Might made that comparison since Chapter 100 reveals Nedzu ''is'' Famine (or at least an Aspect of it).]]
** [[spoiler:After Asa tells Aiko the story of how he met Rini, Asa says that he feels he left a bit of himself in that place. Aiko, realising Rini is a Split who is literally a part of Asa made a separate being, silently comments to herself that its not quite what happened.]]
* ImagineSpot: [[spoiler:After Izuku proposes to her and Himiko, Ochako imagines the entire wedding sequence, from the actual wedding, to remembering a lot of the girls present had sex with ''her'' Izuku, to the marriage consummation, and remembering Himiko will be there too. In a twist, the imagine spot is shown from the perspective of other characters.]]
* InternalReveal:
** In Chapter 69, [[spoiler:Aiko admits to Ko she is a Demi-Power]].
** In Chapter 83, [[spoiler:Aiko and Ko reveal to Izuku, All Might and Katsuki that they're an item now]].
** In Chapter 99, [[spoiler:Aiko reveals to Asa's entire Cabal that she is the Outsider of Human Existence, she, Izuku and Asa are siblings, their biological mother is the Incarnation of Desire, and their biological father is connected to Malice]].
* InternetSafetyAesop: The SPSC's online video on Internet Safety for children Initiates is a double-layered version. The basic lesson covers basic Internet Safety as well as the threats that Initiates specifically need to watch out for. The hidden lesson is for parents. Rai, Asa, and Tagawa were creeped out by the puppets used in the video and had nightmares, but Takei who had also watched the video does not remember the puppets and the former three are dumbfounded when Ko informs them that the video never had puppets after she looks it up. Aiko who saw the entire conversation suspects that the SPSC let something scary (but not dangerous) infect their webpage and the SPSC has a link explaining the situation as a test for parents, who were supposed to check the video ''before'' their kids watch it because that's the kind of world they live in.
* InterruptedIntimacy: Aiko and Ko attempt to do the deed in Chapter 100 only for [[spoiler:an attack by Inalco, starting with an explosion,]] to get in the way.
* {{Irony}}: [[spoiler:In the first Dawn War, the same people responsible for committing some of the worst atrocities on their fellow men, the priests of Malice, were also the ones who first rebelled and led the uprising against the Ancients.]]
* LaserGuidedAmnesia: Nedzu's Warlock Ishida signed a contract with him where she forgets what she did for him once the task is done, allowing him to freely talk about big secrets in front of her for the duration of the assignment with less security risks.
* LastPlaceYouLook: [[spoiler:Nedzu hides the piece of Malice's corpse that he is using to power both himself and his school in a tool shed. When Malice questions this, Nedzu asks if Malice would ever think to look there and his silence is all the confirmation he needs.]]
* LetsSplitUpGang: Mocked. The story calls out the trope, known as "Scooby-Doo Tactics" in certain parts of the world InUniverse, as a suicidally stupid course of action for any scenario other than to patrol a secured location.
* LikesOlderWomen: All Might goes on a date with Ryukyu, who despite her looks, has several decades on him.
* LiteralMetaphor: [[spoiler:When Izuku shows off to the SPSC President he and his friends killed Garaki, he goes the extra mile of literally having his head delivered on a silver platter.]]
* LoopholeAbuse: There is no brothel in the Special Exclusion Zone. What they do have is a place where people are willing to have relationships and accept presents from others. However, in order to avoid trouble, Izuku warned them that if they ever "entertained" anyone under 18 and/or in a relationship, they were going to be in trouble.
* LongGame: [[spoiler:The Incarnation of Malice's plan to revive himself as the Ancient of Malice took ''decades'' to unfold. At minimum, it took almost twenty years for Izuku and Asa to grow up and for the former to become a Godling. Nedzu suspects it took decades more to prepare the summoning ritual to summon an Incarnation of Desire to give birth to Izuku and Asa to begin with.]]
* MadeOfMagic: Magisters, unlike Mages, are made of magic, which is part of why they are not considered human under a few in-universe definitions.
* TheMagicGoesAway: [[spoiler:Nedzu theorises that the end goal of the Principality of Mankind is a world where not only is there no magic, it never existed to begin with.]]
* ManchurianAgent: [[spoiler:The Mind Virus spell allows the user to turn unwitting victims into sleeper agents ready to carry out specific orders when certain conditions are met. The investigators into the murders in the Special Exclusion Zone suspect the usage of this spell.]]
* MassOhCrap: Spider from the Forest of Red attacking the participants of the Blood Hornets subjugation operation causes mass panic.
* MasterOfAll: [[spoiler:The key requirement for someone to become an Ascendant through the path of Magisterium is to have spells of multiple Powers that fit around a theme. This is best done ''before'' one becomes a Magister. Overhaul, the Magister of Change, didn't just have spells from the Shaper of Change. He had the Denial of Change spell from the Ancient of Denial as well as the Refusal to Bend (re: change) spell from the Archon of Transfiguration. Thus, he meets the requirement to become a Demi-Power, the Ascendant of Change.]]
* MeaningfulName: Zyklon (an [[ThoseWackyNazis Ina]][[ArgentinaIsNaziland lco]] Magister) is specialized in spells that create poisonous gas and his name refers to a pesticide created in Germany - one of whose variants, Zyklon B, is infamous for being the gas used to kill most of the victims of the Holocaust.
* MechanicalAbomination: The Machine Avatar is a Lesser Aberrant of Cogs and is the physical manifestation of machine hatred against mankind.
* MegaCorp: Detnerat is a benevolent example. They're a large and successful company that has their own large settlement that happens to be the second-largest Initiates-only settlement and have their own security forces. Aiko notes that with the way the civilians are acting, the omnipresence of the soldiers is clearly there to keep them safe, not obedient. They do not abuse their market power, and the CEO is easygoing and a loving father.
* MisplacedRetribution: [[spoiler:One aspect of Hitoshi's schemes in murdering baseline humans and framing demihumans for them that greatly infuriates Toxicity is that most of his victims had ''nothing'' to do with Himiko screwing him over. Only ''one'' of the acts even targeted Himiko at all.]]
* MoreDakka: Zigzagged. A lot of supernatural threats can be defeated by throwing as many guns and other military ordnance at it. However, for some threats, there simply isn't enough of that, and government bodies have to jump straight to either the nuclear option or find some other way of dealing with it.
* MoreThanMindControl: The Disaster of Despair is content to target only people with pre-existing suicidal tendencies and giving them the push to go through with it.
* MuckMonster: Sludges, the Demihumans of Filth, are literal living sludges that feed on rotten and or dirty things and smells terrible as a side effect of their digestive process.
* MythologyGag: The spells Izuku uses as a Godling reflect some of One for All's Quirks, like Danger Sense or Energy Whip (transformed into Blackwhip's tentacle-like limbs).
* {{Nepotism}}: Discussed but subverted with Izuku. Rai learns that Izuku is the (adoptive) son of UA's Vice Principal, but due to also witnessing Izuku ''solo a Greater Aberrant'', admits he cannot even begin to consider favouritism was involved in Izuku becoming a Warlord.
* NewTransferStudent: During the TimeSkip, UA receives hundreds of transfer students. Most are due to the destruction of the other Magic schools. Others are due to the establishment of the Green Course allowing demihumans to attend. Inasa transferred from Shiketsu right after its announcement which All Might suspects is him scoping things out for a young demihuman relative of his.
* NeverSplitTheParty: Standard Initiate tactics at the first sign of trouble, real or potential, is to make sure to regroup and ''not separate'' unless forced to.
* NoodleIncident: All Might once found Izuku in a haunted mall playing Uno with the mannequins. All Might has ''no clue'' what happened, nor does he want to know.
* NowYouTellMe: Aiko tells Asa's Cabal that trenchipedes release pheromones after death alerting others of their species to danger ''after'' they kill one. Yoshihiro is annoyed by it.
* OffWithHisHead: [[spoiler:Himiko kills Garaki by ripping his head off.]]
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: Rini and Oracle agree to reduce their mutual hostility [[spoiler:in memory of Juggernaut]] and their Cabal members are stunned by the change.
* OpenSecret: Every halfway-influential Initiate in Japan knows the SPSC is planning to take back Gunga Mountain and slay the Disaster of Control, to the point that the operation plan is crafted on the assumption that Control knows they're coming.
* OutlivingOnesOffspring: Played with. Mineta's parents had given up on their son as a lost cause and shrugged off his death back in Book 1 with minimal, if any, angst.
* PassThePopcorn: After Shouto leaves the story to become a Magister, Aiko picks up his thing of eating popcorn at suitably funny moments.
* PersonAsVerb: Izuku uses "monoma" as an adjective to describe punchability.
* PhysicalGod: The Disaster of Despair is an extremely powerful Demi Power that is the reason so many suicides happen in Aokigahara Forest. It's so powerful that the only attempt to eliminate in ended in complete disaster and led to the SPSC deciding that letting it victimise the occasional non-Initiate with pre-existing suicidal tendencies is a small price to pay to keep it from leaving Aokigahara Forest.
* PlausibleDeniability: [[spoiler:Subverted. When Izuku reveals how badly Thunderbolt fucked up, he expects the SPSC to discreetly disappear the man only to be caught by surprise when they blatantly do it in front of witnesses like him.]]
* PoorCommunicationKills: Aiko hates it when people don't ''talk'' about their issues, especially when not talking leads to things blowing up.
* PowerAtAPrice:
** Warlocks involve actual contracts. Warlocks form contracts with Demi-Powers where in exchange for abilities connected to the Demi-Power's domain, they have to abide by the agreed terms. The contract also locks out the ability to use other magic for the contract's duration.
** [[spoiler:The final chapter of Book 2 reveals that the power of a Godling comes with the price of being warped to have personality and behavioural traits similar to their parent Power. Izuku the Godling of Desire has all sorts of sexual interests ranging from the acceptable, to the more exotic, and finally, to the outright wrong. Asa the Godling of Malice is an actual sadist who likes inflicting pain and seeing others in pain. The only thing stopping them both from being threats to society is due to growing up human and having enough attachments to keep them grounded.]]
* ThePowerOfFriendship: [[spoiler:At the most critical moment, Malice's revival plan is completely destroyed by Mankind reminding Asa that he has friends that care about him, and helping him realise he can give his hatred direction. By casting a small light of friendship, Mankind helps Asa focus his hatred on a single Aspect of the domain of Malice, ''Punishment of Evil'', which forces Malice to terminate his revival plan or he'd be revived as a part of Asa when he becomes an ''Archon''.]]
* ThePowerOfLust: Downplayed. Izuku as the Godling of Desire recharges his magic by fulfilling the desires of others. The majority of this is by indulging in sexual activities with his main girlfriends and other assorted lovers, but sharing drinks with his best friend also works.
* ProperlyParanoid:
** Asa thinks the staff at the Jakku Hospital are malicious and watching them when they think they aren't looking. Toxicity thinks he is paranoid, but the hospital is a cult headquarters and Asa is very right.
** Ibara trains the denizens of Green Tower in evacuation drills and ordered them to keep it a complete secret. [[spoiler:Certainly came in handy when Inalco attacked, which reduced potential casualties.]]
* ProtagonistCentredMorality: Lampshaded and played for laughs. Izuku is very upset that people are trying to frame the mother of his child and one of his girlfriends for murders, forgetting that the former, Ibara, has killed a Warlord and his cabal (in self-defence) and the latter, Himiko, is a SerialKiller who killed and ate many students. All Might and Kan just look at each other in silence after Izuku's statement.
* PurelyAestheticGlasses: Garaki has improved eyesight but wears glasses anyway for the look of it.
* PutOnABus: During the time skip, Shouto, Momo, and Saiko have all graduated from UA and are no longer a major part of the story.
* NewhartPhoneCall: Ryukyu hears only All Might's half of the phone call when Izuku calls him about the Jakku Hospital incident and is dumbfounded when she hears there were two Heresiarchs and that the SPSC President is with Izuku.
* RacistGrandma: Purity is the head of the SPSC's anti-demihuman death squad and is bigoted against them in general. One of her sons, Oracle, looks forward to seeing her reaction when she finds out her other son married a Sludge and all of her grandchildren are going to be Sludges.
* RagsToRiches: Tatsuma the Ascendant of Greed was born to an impoverished family before she became a Demi-Power and is the backer of a large Initiate conglomerate.
* RealityWarper: [[spoiler:The Reverse Angels have a limited ability to warp reality to make whatever they say Truth, even retroactively.]]
* TheReveal:
** In Chapter 69, [[spoiler:Ko reveals that the story of her becoming a Celestial is a lie. She was ''born'' a Celestial]].
** In Chapter 75, [[spoiler:the existence of the Principality of Mankind is revealed]].
** Chapter 100:
*** [[spoiler:It turns out Nedzu was lying about not knowing who committed the murders and did it in a way to frame demihumans for it, and he knew it was Shinsou behind it all along.]]
*** [[spoiler:Hisashi and Nedzu are revealed to be the Incarnations of ''Malice and Famine'' respectively.]]
** Chapter 105:
*** [[spoiler:It is confirmed that Malice ''was'' responsible for Ochako's death and he ''wanted'' her to come back as a Stalker because Malice wanted someone who was fundamentally incapable of refusing to engage in sexual activities with Izuku as part of a multi-faceted plan.]]
*** [[spoiler:Hitoshi has, at some point before he started his murders, become a demihuman, a Mentat to be more specific.]]
*** [[spoiler:Rini is revealed to actually be a part of Asa that broke off from him due to the trauma of almost dying to the Serpentine Hound.]]
* RomanticRibbing: A big portion of Katsuki's and Moe's romance is insulting each other and they and Fuyumi having fun with it together.
* RuleOfSymbolism: Whoever sealed the Aiko the Outsider of ''Human'' Existence trapped her in a horrific place where humans used to be trapped where they were inevitably stripped of everything that made them human through the power of the Ancient of Malice. After Malice's death, the ritual potential of such an act was gone, but sealing Aiko there in the first place is an indicator that whoever did it ''hated'' Humanity as a ''concept''. [[spoiler:Chapter 103 reveals it was the Incarnation of Malice (as in, ''her father'') that did it.]]
* RunningGag: After the TimeSkip, Aiko continues Shouto's popcorn gag in his stead, and tries to push the gag further so it doesn't grow stale.
* SchoolIsMurder: During the TimeSkip, All Might implements reforms designed to reduce student casualties to downplay this trope while maintaining the quality of UA's graduates, with him reflecting that the "50% survival rate" was a heavy outlier brought by the SPSC's attempt to bring down the Disaster of Despair. While many students die, it's not as bad as indicated.
* ScrewTheRulesIHaveConnections: Defied. The SPSC's law enforcement division specifically avoids recruiting people with connections to the major mage families and organisations they're supposed to police and their policies for the actual enforcement of laws are designed to make it hard for well-connected criminals to rely on their connections to bail them out.
* ScrewTheRulesIHaveSupernaturalPowers: Discussed by All Might. He says Magisters like him could commit arson and the owner of the home he just burned down would nervously smile and thank him for giving him an opportunity to do some renovations.
* SeenItAll: As a direct result of Izuku's sexual activities with various demihuman species that normal Initiates would never even consider sleeping with, All Might's reaction to hearing someone other than Izuku sleeping with and having child with a Sludge is to do nothing more than raise an eyebrow.
* SeparatedAtBirth: Izuku, Aiko and Asa are triplets separated at birth. [[spoiler:Malice did this as part of a master plan for his revival. Aiko was useless for his plans, so he locked her up to make her suffer. Izuku was given a relatively happy life to turn him into the Godling of Desire. Asa's life was made hell to turn him into the Godling of Malice.]]
* SerialKiller: Book 2 features one attacking people in ways to cast a bad light on demi-humans.
* SexMagic: Played with. Aiko has spread (false) rumours that a demi-human having sex with Izuku makes them stronger for shits and giggles.
* ShootTheDog: The SPSC makes certain criminals vanish without trial, which while unpleasant, is something that even All Might understands the reasoning of. After all, if there's a well-connected criminal, their connections might lean on the SPSC to be lenient even if that would undermine supernatural security as a whole. But if they simply vanish, the SPSC can deny any involvement and with the world they live in, they have PlausibleDeniability.
* ShortLivedLeadership: Chiba Hotaru's tenure as Warlord of Frozen Hell lasted for a few months at most before her resignation.
* ShoutOut:
** Aiko references ''Literature/CandleCove'' when Rai, Asa, and Tagawa are shocked to learn the SPSC Internet Safety Video that they watched, which had creepy puppets, doesn't actually have puppets, at all.
** Aiko thinks of ''WesternAnimation/PhineasAndFerb'' in Chapter 69.
* ShroudedInMyth: There are a lot of rumours surrounding Aiko, with the most extreme being that she's secretly a ''Greater Aberrant'' that's trying and failing to pretend to be a human.
* SimpleSolutionWontWork: On the face of it, letting Yoshihiro leave the mixed human-demihuman Cabal would solve their internal problems, but Aiko doesn't allow it on the grounds that getting the son of the head of the SPSC's anti-demihuman death squad onboard offers so many potential benefits. So, Aiko is making him stay unless she determines the situation is unsalvageable.
* SinkOrSwimMentor: After the TimeSkip, All Might's reforms ditched the candidacy phase where students are left to fend for themselves to be more hands-on in defiance of this trope.
* SleepingTheirWayToTheTop: When Aiko offers Ko a position as the head of the Urban Demihumans Community, Ko worries about being accused of only getting it because she had sex with Aiko before remembering that everyone knows Izuku frequently has sex with both Michiko and Ibara, the heads of the ''other'' demihuman communities and that therefore, she doesn't need to worry about the potential stigma of this trope.
* SmugSuper: To Ryukyu's consternation, too many people who become Magisters get a serious power trip to go with the achievement. She finds All Might a refreshing aversion.
* SpitTake: Ryukyu almost chokes on her beer when she hears Izuku and co had to deal with two Heresiarchs.
* SpottingTheThread:
** When Sen Kaibara is murdered, ''almost'' everything points to a ghoul attack, but the attacker got a few things wrong and Kan realises it is actually someone trying to make it ''look'' like a ghoul attack.
** The Jakku Hospital incident occurs because Asa notices and Oracle confirms that one nurse noticed Rini's rabbit ears and only pretended to be under the censor, which causes the cult to panic, drop all pretenses, and attack.
* StalkerShrine: Ochako's personal room in Overlook is full of Izuku's pictures. Izuku is fully aware of and slightly disturbed by this but accepts it due to Ochako's nature as a Stalker.
* SuccessionCrisis: Chiba Hotaru, who succeeded Saiko Intelli as the Warlord of the Frozen Hell Exclusion Zone during the time skip, resigns without a successor, leaving her Exclusion Zone in chaos.
* SuckySchool: Oracle reflects that before All Might's reforms, U.A. sucked hard because the student body was allowed to kill each other, with the only reasons that parents sent their kids there anyway being that their education was ''that'' good and that the casualties tend to be limited to the students that would have died quickly without their parents anyway.
* TakingYouWithMe: When Hakamada ends up alone against a High Legionnaire, he knows he is going to die, so he casts Sacrificial Summoning, a spell that summons more powerful creatures the more you sacrifice, and [[HeroicSacrifice sacrifices his own life]]. He succeeds in summoning a Shard of Valour that successfully slays the High Legionnaire.
* TemptingFate: Izuku says out loud that the Blood Hornets Subjugation Operation has been going according to plan. Katsuki is annoyed that Izuku just tempted fate and sure enough, Spider from the Forest of Red shows up and attacks their supply lines.
* TimeDissonance: The artifact that Shouto theorised Aiko created out of her sense of time to make her imprisonment more bearable is found by All Might and Nedzu, and it allows the user to manipulate how fast they perceive time.
* TimeSkip: Chapter 53 is five months ahead of Chapter 52.
* UnderestimatingBadassery: Hatsume completely misjudges her odds against Izuku due to not properly understanding what a Godling actually is.
* UnreliableNarrator: All Might reflects that when Himiko first described UA's survival rate of 50% for their Initiate students to Izuku, she turns out to have grossly exaggerated the typical casualty rate. If things were truly that bad, no sane Initiate parents would enroll their kids at UA. Himiko just happened to arrive during the year when the failed attack on the Disaster of Despair happened and UA was in the splash zone of the catastrophic consequences of Despair's counterattack, which left her with a ''very'' wrong impression of UA's typical casualty rates.
* WeirdnessMagnet: Yoshihiro is dumbfounded that in a few weeks, his Cabal encountered a Demi Power, a Greater Aberrant, and Izuku whom he realises cannot possibly be a baseline human.
* WhamEpisode:
** Chapter 75 is full of major reveals. [[spoiler:To start, there used to be more Ancients and there were no Archons, Primordials, or Shapers. The first Dawn War started when Malice's own clergy revolted and led the rebellion against the Ancients. The climax is the reveal of the ''Principality of Mankind'', the Power that supports humanity against the Ancients and is the source of the Glyphs.]]
** Chapter 102 is a real doozy. [[spoiler:The apparent hopelessness of fighting against the more powerful supernatural threats is completely flipped on its head. Famine states they the Ancients ''lost'' the Dawn Wars and that most of the Ancients ''have given up'' on trying to subjugate humanity since mankind kept ''winning''. All the problems the Ancients cause is mostly out of a metaphysical inertia without any intent behind it. Another way of saying that old habits die hard. Some like Days are even trying to act ''benevolent''.]]
** Chapter 105 is a bigger wham than Chapter 102. [[spoiler:Rini turns out to actually be a LiteralSplitPersonality of Asa, and she sacrifices herself to save him from his injuries. Once Asa is whole once more, he ascends into the Godling of Malice, which is precisely what the Incarnation of Malice needed. Malice then extends his consciousness into his Godling and the chapter ends with the Ancient of Malice being in the process of coming back to life.]]
* WhenTheClockStrikesTwelve: Midnight is the Ancient of Malice's sacred time of the day, or night as the case may be.
* YouDidntAsk: Zigzagged. Rai tells his Cabal mates that they could have asked him if they wanted to see the meeting with his brother but when questioned if he'd actually grant permission, he admits he would have only granted it to Tagawa and Ryuu.
* YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness: [[spoiler:After the failure of the MLF's second attack on U.A., the SPSC follows them into the threshold and finds most of the front's hired Inalco mercenaries dead. They conclude that the front never intended to pay them and killed most of the survivors from the failed attack.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder: ''Book Three'']]
!!Note. Spoilers for ''Book One'' and ''Book Two'' will be unmarked.
* AndroclesLion: Izuku has a sentient biplane from the previous Dawn War freed from the chains Malice bound it in. It repays the favour by [[spoiler:sacrificing itself to slay the Horror chasing the Suicide Squad.]]
* AntiAntiChrist: Ryukyu loves that the Godling of Malice acts against his father by targeting the people who embody Malice's domain.
* AnyLastWords: [[spoiler:Malice asks Cogs whether the latter has anything to say upon its defeat. Cogs delivers an epic burn by asking Malice how it feels to know he defeated a Power, only because ''humans helped him''. Malice is so enraged the crater they're in is so tainted with power any human insane enough to come near would be rendered even worse.]]
* AssholeVictim: Asa channels his murderous tendencies towards killing people who ''really'' deserve it.
* BabiesMakeEverythingBetter: [[spoiler:Izuku's children, Yoichi (with Michiko) and Nana (with Ibara)]] are born during the TimeSkip.
* BeethovenWasAnAlienSpy: UsefulNotes/RomanVonUngernSternberg was a minor Initiate who eventually became "something between an Incarnation, an Ascendant, and a Heresiarch of Strife" that managed to conquer China during the last Dawn War.
* BloodyHilarious: The talk with Ryukyu and Nezu after [[spoiler:All Might's kidnapping]] turns into this as Ryukyu keeps splattering U.A.'s principal into the walls, the floor, and the desk.
* CampGay: Invoked. Turns out that Imai specifically leans into the "power bottom supergay femboy aesthetic" because Izuku secretly enjoys it, otherwise acting normal when Izuku isn't around.
* CaptainObvious: When the Suicide Squad encounter mutilated human corpses clearly arranged in a specific manner, Shoto says it is concerning. Katsuki sarcastically asks him whether the corpses gives Shoto bad vibes and that it 'implies bad things for our future journey', and Shoto says those words verbatim to troll Katsuki.
* ChangelingTale: The Ancient of Wilderness is the origin of the category of mythical fae known as changelings, them being his Lesser Aberrants. Bakugou realizes that seeing a changeling who looks incredibly human still triggers their six sense that something is wrong, which is likely why the legends of changelings are the way they are.
* {{Cliffhanger}}: Chapter 110's final scene is [[spoiler:Malice making a kidnapping attempt on All Might.]]
* ColdBloodedTorture: Asa inflicts horrific torture on a guy in Chapter 114. At least Asa made sure his victim is a scumbag beforehand.
* CommonalityConnection: Asa is closest to his brother Izuku when it comes to family members since they're fellow Godlings and Izuku understands what the downsides of that are.
* ContentWarnings: Chapter 114 begins with a warning for explicit torture.
* CorneredRattlesnake: When the City of Marukane in Hosu was about to fall to the prefecture, the remaining human population decided to evacuate everyone they can, then have a group of volunteers purposefully start a nuclear meltdown at the local nuclear power station. It ''worked''. The place is full of the corpses of dead Greater Aberrants and Demi Powers, and to this day, the place is still radioactive.
* CrazyEnoughToWork: [[spoiler:Izuku suggests letting the Mankind Liberation Front know about the facility full of Dawn War artifacts. The rest of the Suicide Squad thinks it's an insane plan, but the potential payoff of causing internal strife in the front is too good to pass up.]]
* DeathByAdaptation: [[spoiler:Saiko Intelli is killed via arrow shot by a Heresiarch of Wilderness.]]
* DeityOfHumanOrigin:
** [[spoiler:The Archon of Defiance was once a human, having become a Power through the very act of triumphing over Malice. Nedzu suspects several more Powers, excluding the Ancients, were also once humans.]]
** During the last Dawn War, when magic came back, it turned several exceptional people into deities on par with the Disaster of Despair.
* DevilInPlainSight: Overhaul reflects that he and the other members of the Mankind Liberation Front were all so blind to not realise that their leader Hisashi, the self-proclaimed Ascendant of Humanity, was not who he said he was despite him constantly acting in a way that is contrary to his supposed domain.
* DidntSeeThatComing: In Chapter 133, [[spoiler:Malice reflects that several unforeseen variables are affecting his plan. Malice learns that Overhaul, Invincible, Eclipse, and their subordinates found his Dawn War Relics collection, he realizes things are not quite going according to his plan. They weren't supposed to ever find out about those. He also reflects on the Incarnation of Cogs acting against him, which he never once considered]].
* DidYouJustFlipOffCthulhu: Malice is ''furious'' when Izuku accidentally spits in the face of his domain by taking the concept of torture and making it ''consensual and loving'' by doing it with Ochako who couldn't die.
* DidYouJustRomanceCthulhu: The Magister head of security at the American airport Izuku's family went to is shocked when they realize All Might is sleeping with a Demi Power.
* DwindlingParty: The Suicide Squad head to Hosu in full knowledge of the fact none of them will survive. Their first losses were Tokoyami/Darkness and Ochako due to them arriving in the middle of the domain of a being on par with the Disaster of Despair, but since Ochako is a Stalker, she is able to reunite with her Izuku relatively quickly. Their next loss is [[spoiler:Saiko Intelli due to them getting attacked by a Wilderness Cult]]. In an abandoned town, [[spoiler:they lose Toxicity to Junkies]]. Then [[spoiler:Asa jumps off their truck in an HeroicSacrifice to save the rest of the Squad]], and [[spoiler:Hatsume transforms into an Incarnation of Cogs that dies in an almost successful attempt to kill Malice]].
* EldritchAbomination: In a story full of horrifying abominations, the aptly named Horror, one of the Lesser Aberrants of Malice, sure takes the cake. It is very concept of fear extracted from human minds and given form. Any human that survives an encounter with it immediately purges all memory of the incident to preserve their sanity, even Godlings.
* EldritchLocation: Hosu post-Censored is very dangerous, full of eldritch monsters, and the various locations within Hosu have been heavily warped by said eldritch beings. There are several spooky forests and the Suicide Squad landed in one of them and Darkness/Tokoyami realizes that there are at least ''two'' powerful monsters near them.
* EvilLawyerJoke: Shoto says Malice might be a lawyer, which would explain a lot.
* FateWorseThanDeath:
** Asa's foster mother is kept alive while he slowly removes body parts piece by piece. After over a year, her suffering is still ongoing.
** Malice's endgame is not to wipe out humans. It is to make them ''suffer''. Knowing that, everyone who knows he is trying to make a comeback would rather die trying to stop him then let him win.
* FingerInTheMail: A variant. Asa leaves around body parts of his "mother" for others to find. The SPSC isn't likely to find them all since she's still alive while Asa makes her suffering last.
* GoodNewsBadNews:
** After Hatsume identifies their location when they first land in Hosu, she declares that the good news is that the MLF can't reach them, and the bad news is that the MLF ''can't reach them'' for reasons that are bad for the Suicide Squad.
** Izuku tells the rest of the Suicide Squad the good news that Hatsume can fix up a truck using the Lore of Cogs. He then explains that she can do that because Cogs has been directly feeding her knowledge, a huge concern to them.
* HappilyMarried: Aiko and Ko get married during the TimeSkip.
* HeroicSacrifice:
** [[spoiler:Rai willingly endures horrific pain from the injuries inflicted on him by Malice's aberrants so that his suffering could power the machines Hatsume needs to use to empower the Suicide Squad.]]
** [[spoiler:Asa sacrifices himself to the eldritch beings responsible for the Road of Tears so the rest of the squad can escape.]]
* HoistByHisOwnPetard:
** Izuku's attempts to prevent Rai from joining the suicide squad backfires because Rai did not in fact know about it to begin with but after learning about it from Izuku, he insists on joining.
** [[spoiler:Malice's demons leave Rai in horrific pain, but Hatsume plans to take advantage of that to power up the machines at the facility Malice made to turn what remaining members of their party they could into superhumans, improving their odds against Malice.]]
* HolyHandGrenade: The Austro-Hungarian god-killers are special artillery shells that combines the magic of Primordials, Shapers, and Archons of Purity and War. It is the closest thing to pure holy power and intended for use on the Ancients. It can one-shot any Incarnation.
* IfOnlyYouKnew: Shoto keeps laughing whenever one of his fiancées call Izuku "horniness incarnate" since Izuku ''is'' the son of an Incarnation of Desire, aka ''actual'' horniness incarnate.
* InsistentTerminology: Asa's family don't call his murder sprees that. They call it "work". It's less negative and makes it easier to ignore what he's doing when they're not looking.
* InternalReveal:
** In Chapter 115, Saiko and Momo find out about the divine parentage of Izuku and his siblings.
** In Chapter 117, Izuku informs Ibara, Michiko, and Imai about his divine parentage.
* LivingCrashpad: When the Suicide Squad escapes the first eldritch being they encounter, they fall down a portal and land on each other. Some manage to get out of the way before someone else lands on them, but several are unlucky enough to have more than one person land on them.
* KillSat: In the previous Dawn War, the United States had the idea of setting up a network of satellites armed with death rays that they could use to snipe high-value targets, but were unable to implement it before the war ended.
* MathematiciansAnswer: Answering "yes" to x or y questions is Izuku's petty revenge for Aiko's memeing habits.
* MercyKill: After learning the Clockwork Soldier they found are created from prisoners of the Ascending Path during the last Dawn War, Izuku orders they be put down to end their misery. He does the same for the other supersoldiers in suffering they find.
* MoodWhiplash: Chapter 110 is mostly lighthearted (with some angst on Ibara's part) before it ends with [[spoiler:Malice making a kidnapping attempt on All Might]].
* MundaneLuxury: The situation in Hosu is so bad that being driven in an old car is a privilege that Overhaul had to be a god to enjoy.
* MysticalPlague: The Red Death is a deadly magical virus created by the Ascending Path. It's so lethal even they only deployed it in pocket dimensions. It can infect all life and can rapidly mutate making vaccines useless.
* MythologyGag: [[spoiler:Just like his Hero Name in canon, Shoto's Magister Name is his birth name.]] Izuku thinks he missed out on some joke.
* NotMakingThisUpDisclaimer: When Izuku hears about the life of UsefulNotes/RomanVonUngernSternberg, Izuku calls it a video game plot. He is shocked to learn all that actually happened.
* NoodleIncident:
** Izuku has a new escapade that is referenced without any details being provided, his trip to Shikoku.
** Port Arthur, which is mentioned as the reason Ryukyu hates Nezu. It's eventually explained that Ryukyu was trying to escape China before it was sunk to stop UsefulNotes/RomanVonUngernSternberg when Nezu showed up and took her place in the evacuation boat, forcing her to join Admiral Kolchak's army.
* ObliviousGuiltSlinging: When Asa says Izuku would never lie to him while they're in Hosu, Izuku feels guilty because he knows he would if it meant stopping him from coming with the Suicide Squad.
* OffingTheOffspring: When Izuku confesses to All Might that he has problematic sexual interests, All Might assures him that if he does give in, he will kill him himself. Izuku finds it relieving his father will help mitigate the potential threat he could pose.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: When Izuku sees Ryukyu at U.A., he knows something serious happened since she would never otherwise be at Nedzu's school if she had a choice.
* ItsPersonal: Malice realizes that [[spoiler:Cogs hatred of him is extremely personal, and theorizes that it was because the greater him convinced the other Ancients to follow him, and for being on that level, that has the effect of corrupting them, and after his death, the remaining Ancients reconsidered all their actions]].
* RealityBreakingParadox: A human beating a Power is literally impossible. If a human succeeds anyway, such as when Malice was slayed, reality has to find some way to resolve the paradox. [[spoiler:It does this by assuming the human was an entity that could have done it to begin with, like a ''Power''. The Archon of Defiance was born from the human that defeated Malice when reality resolved the paradox by making him a Power.]]
* RetGone: [[spoiler:The Incarnation of Cogs tries to wipe out the Incarnation of Malice from existence. It briefly works with the Suicide Squad wondering what they're doing in Hosu and the Mankind Liberation Front being confused on who leads them, up until Malice wills himself back into existence. Cogs then tries again, this time upping the ante by also trying to turn all of Hosu into a perfect machine that will keep unexisting Malice the instant Malice makes himself exist again. It fails because Overhaul interrupts that by disrupting the machine mid-assembly.]]
* TheReveal: Chapter 112 reveals what Overhaul asked All Might during the MLF's second attack on U.A. [[spoiler:Overhaul asked which Power's influence did Izuku use to break Decay. All Might answers Malice. Knowing that Izuku's father is the leader of the MLF and that Izuku's mother was Desire, this causes Overhaul to connect the dots and realize Hisashi is the Incarnation of Malice.]]
* RomanticRibbing: A large portion of Shoto's romance with Momo and Saiko is them teasing each other about real or made-up flaws.
* TheScapegoat: After learning the other Ancients turned on him, Malice thinks it's because he is their scapegoat for them to be able to make some sort of peace with the Principality of Mankind. He is forced to consider another theory after [[spoiler:he realizes Cogs hatred for him is ''personal'']].
* SecretSecretKeeper: Discussed. Izuku sometimes wonder if the SPSC ''does'' know about Asa having Malice powers and is responsible for the gruesome murders they uncovered, and just decided that letting him kill the worst human scum around is a small price to pay in exchange for not pissing off the Ascendant of Greed.
* SeenItAll: The security staff at the American airport have seen all sorts of things and Izuku being married to a Stalker and a ''Ghoul'' didn't get much, if any, reaction.
* SideBet: Moe and Fuyumi have a bet going on who the Suicide Squad loses first. [[spoiler:Fuyumi is upset to win, since she bet that they would lose one of the heavy hitters first, and they lost Tokoyami the Terminal Warlock.]]
* ShootTheDangerousMinion: After Hatsume reveals she has access to magic from previous versions of the timeline, Shoto tells Izuku that they need to be extra sure she dies during their mission. Hatsume having that access makes her the most dangerous Heresiarch of Cogs currently in existence, and he thinks [[spoiler:she's slowly becoming an ''Incarnation'' of Cogs.]]
* ShoutOut: ''WebVideo/ThePainter'' is referenced as something Izuku doesn't want Asa to be inspired by.
* SimpleSolutionWontWork: Nedzu and Ryukyu ''can't'' ask for help from all the organizations that could help them against Malice. For them to bring their forces to bear, they need to give a reason, but they're not going to believe an Incarnation of Malice is running around without proof. To be credible, Nedzu would have to reveal he is the Incarnation of Famine and that Izuku and Asa are Godlings, and that's more likely to result in the other parties assuming they are attempting to manipulate them and waste time trying to kill them and by the time the truth is known for sure, it will be too late.
* SkinWalker: While facing the Wilderness Cult, Izuku realizes that the Heresiarchs of Wilderness are the origins of the Skinwalkers of Navajo myths when he notices that the Heresiarchs have animal traits that look like they were added on and likely the result of a Rite, which lines up with the Navajo myths of the Skinwalkers being evil magic practitioners who used dark rites to gain animal traits.
* SpottingTheThread: [[spoiler:Invincible, Eclipse, and other members of the Mankind Liberation Front who were formerly part of the local JSDF garrisons were suspicious of Hisashi for a long time because the former head of the JSDF forces was killed by a Warmonger masquerading as a human, and they find it extremely odd that a self-proclaimed Ascendant of Humanity, who met the Warmonger in question, didn't notice, or at least, didn't do anything about it.]]
* SuicideMission: Saving All Might from Malice and preventing Malice from winning requires sending a small team of powerful individuals after them into the MLF's own territory with unknown dangers. Nedzu outright states it's a suicide mission.
* SuperSoldier: The last Dawn War had all sides fielding a large amount of supersoldiers. The Ascending Path had the Clockwork Soldiers that were created out of captured prisoners. In Hatsume's opinion, one of the best were Przeładowany, who were created with careful application of the Lore of Life. However, only a small minority of people can withstand the full treatment, and Shoto theorizes that they were Awakened Humans. [[spoiler:Katsuki, Fuyumi and Moe undergo the partial treatment to get a power boost before the Suicide Squad enters the territory controlled by the MLF.]]
* {{Synchronization}}: There is a Lore of Secrets spell that allows one to link the sensory input of two people. Asa's version of the spell as the Godling of Malice specifically shares the feeling of ''pain''.
* ThatsNoMoon: Izuku realizes the first eldritch being pursuing the Suicide Squad is only the ''consciousness'' of the actual being. The ''actual'' being is ''the entire haunted forest they're in''.
* TheoryOfNarrativeCausality: The Incarnation of Malice explains to All Might that story logic works a lot in the setting because to the Powers, humanity ''is'' a story. That's why the original rebel priests of Malice were able to successfully ask Mankind to get involved when their ritual involved invoking the opposite aesthetics of Malice. That's why Malice's original revival plan had to be framed as a story. That's why Mankind was able to counter that plan by turning the story of Malice's revival into the story of redemption via ''ThePowerOfFriendship''. And that is why Malice has to kidnap All Might a month before the actual ritual can happen. By giving a grace period, there is room to tell the story of people trying to stop the revival plan, otherwise the Powers will never let Malice simply kidnap All Might closer to the ritual date.
* TimeSkip: Book Three begins one year after the end of Book Two.
* ThirdPersonPerson: In Chapter 134, Hatsume begins referring to herself in the third-person. [[spoiler:A sign the Incarnation of Cogs has almost fully formed.]]
* TookALevelInBadass:
** [[spoiler:Momo becomes a Magister in Chapter 132, renaming herself '''Demiurge''' in the process.]]
** [[spoiler:Katsumi, Fuyumi, and Moe undergo the partial Przeładowany, becoming more powerful than before.]]
* WhamEpisode:
** Chapter 110 shows [[spoiler:Malice attacking All Might with the intention of capturing him.]]
** Chapter 126 reveals that [[spoiler:there are Lesser Aberrants of Malice around, a sign that the Suicide Squad could very well fail in stopping the revival of the Ancient of Malice]].
** Chapter 128 shows [[spoiler:that the Suicide Squad hit the ''jackpot''. They found a huge vault of Dawn War relics that they can use on their mission]].
* WrongContextMagic:
** The first eldritch being the Suicide Squad encounters in Hosu recognizes the Desire and Malice in Izuku and Asa, but is confused by the unfamiliarity of their Godling status.
** Hatsume has access to the Lore of Cogs from ''previous'' versions of the timeline, and this includes some very powerful or otherwise useful magic. What she made for the truck the Suicide Squad found simply should not be possible under the current rules of magic.
** [[spoiler:Shoto is given access to magic from the previous Dawn War by Tatsuma. This includes one spell that can freeze anything, including the state of a person's mind. Shoto thinks the overall branch of magic was themed around stagnation, but no one knows which Power produced that Lore.]]
* YearOutsideHourInside: [[spoiler:One of the things Cogs did to prevent Malice's rebirth is to move Hosu forward in time to make him miss the deadline to do the ritual. While the outside world is unaffected, Hosu skips ahead ten days]].
