Sir Ian Holm Cuthbert, CBE (12 September 1931 - 19 June 2020) was a prolific and versatile Academy Award-nominated English actor.

He began his career as very well-regarded stage actor, before a crippling attack of [[PerformanceAnxiety stage fright]] in the 1970s caused him to switch to TV and film work for many years (although he quite frequently appeared in film adaptations of stage plays, such as his performances in Creator/KennethBranagh's ''Film/HenryV1989'', Creator/FrancoZeffirelli's ''Theatre/{{Hamlet}}'', and a widely-praised performance in the title role of Richard Eyre's ''Theatre/KingLear'').

Among Holm's best-known film roles are ''Film/{{Alien}}'', ''Film/ChariotsOfFire'' and ''Film/TheLordOfTheRings''. As to the latter, he's probably unique in being the only person to play both Frodo (in the 80s BBC radio adaptation) and Bilbo (in the Peter Jackson film series).

Ian Holm largely retired from acting in 2007 after being diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, but despite his failing physical health and memory, he was coaxed out of retirement a few years later by Creator/PeterJackson to give cameo appearances as Old Bilbo in ''Film/TheHobbit''.
