Character subpage for the main protagonist of ''Anime/CodeGeass'', Lelouch, given his own page due to the sheer number of tropes.

->''"[...] Then answer this! Are you just going to sit back and wait for someone else to defeat Britannia? Who?! You think if you wait long enough, some day the right chance will finally come? Don't be naive! If we don't stand up and do it ourselves, that some day will never come!"''

The fallen prince of Britannia, exiled from the empire along with his blind and crippled little sister to Area 11, which is what Japan is referred to in this series. He ''despises'' Britannia and its [[SocialDarwinist survival of the strongest]] mentality, and seeks to tear it all down to make a gentler world for his sister. One fateful day, he gets the power to do exactly that, and crosses paths with the mysterious witch C.C. who grants him the power of Geass. Lelouch's Geass allows him to compel anyone to obey any of his commands, although ItOnlyWorksOnce.

With this newfound power, he dons a cloak and a mask and assumes the identity of Zero, and works with the Japanese freedom fighters to form the Black Knights, to rebel against Britannia. This puts him at odds with his best friend Suzaku, an incredibly powerful soldier serving the very same empire that Lelouch seeks to destroy. From the mild mannered Lelouch Lamperouge, to the exiled prince Lelouch vi Britannia, to the cold, calculating, but very theatrical Zero, Lelouch dons many masks throughout the show and lives completely different lives. Above all, he has one goal: the destruction of Britannia, and he'll use whatever means necessary to achieve this goal.

[[folder:#-B]]
* ZeroPercentApprovalRating: [[spoiler: Invoked. He makes himself so hated as Emperor that when the Zero Requiem happens, everyone will unite behind his killer and focus on doing things in the exact opposite way Lelouch did simply because they hate him that much.]]
* TenMinuteRetirement: After learning about Nunnally's plan to restore the Special Administrative Zone of Japan in Turn 7, then again after [[spoiler: her supposed death in episode 19 of ''R2'']].
* AceCustom: Has three over the course of the series:
** His first is actually a subversion: it is a Burai, the same type Knightmare Frame used by the rank-and-file pilots of the Black Knights, with an extra head ornament.
** Later, he hijacks the Gawain, an experimental Knightmare Frame outfitted with its own Float System, making it the first KF capable of flight; personal Hadron Cannons that have a short and wide range at first, but are perfected with Rakshata's help; and the "Druid System", originally meant for studying the ruins on Shikine Island, which can be used to predict enemy troop movement.
** In R2, he gets his own personal Knightmare Frame, the Shinkiro. Using a non-standard control system that plays to his strengths as a tactician, the Shinkiro has a ChestBlaster that can fire over a wide range and a BeehiveBarrier that requires manual input via a keyboard interface that allows it pinpoint protection over any part of its body.
* AcePilot: Averted, despite being the main character in a mecha series. Lelouch's biggest strength is as a tactician, not a pilot. He leads his forces to victory with his brilliant tactics, but most of the dirty works on the battlefield are done by his troops, not him. Kallen, Tohdoh and the Four Holy Swords are all superior pilots among the Black Knights, which is why he's giving them the best Knightmare Frames, whereas Zero is content with using average Knightmares. Against high-skilled pilots, Lelouch normally doesn't fare a chance. Even when Lelouch later receives the powerful Gawain and Shinkiro, both of them having extraordinary firepower and defensive capabilities that other Knightmare Frames of their time are lacking, both Knightmares are inferior in direct one-on-one combat and can easily be overwhelmed by an AcePilot. The Gawain in particular is a good example of why Lelouch isn't this trope, as it not only requires ''two'' pilots, but Lelouch had to rely on an underhanded back-up plan to actually defeat the overwhelming Cornelia.
* AchillesInHisTent: During most of Turn 19. [[spoiler:Schneizel uses it to maximum effect.]]
* {{Acrofatic}}: [[InvertedTrope Inverted]]. He's actually quite lean, but physical activity is not his strong suit.
* AdaptationalJerkass:
** In ''Manga/CodeGeassNightmareOfNunnally'', what with Lelouch brutally murdering Clovis some time ''after'' Shinjuku (which he had no role in) and even [[spoiler: being behind the JLF taking over the Sakuradite Conference]] though likely [[spoiler:this is influenced by his FusionDance with C.C. in that verse.]]
** In the compilation movies, his hatred of Rolo comes across as much less justified, owing to the latter's AdaptationalNiceGuy, [[spoiler:as he didn't kill Shirley, the primary reason he decided to subject him to a UriahGambit]].
* AffablyEvil: Gives off this, as he is remarkably polite, when he isn't killing or manipulating his enemies.
* AffectionateNickname: Shirley calls him "Lulu".
* AgentPeacock: He's often seen comforting his little sister and sometimes hanging out with the girls at school. In addition, he cooks, and, when in Secret Identity mode, is absolutely ''fabulous''.
* AllEncompassingMantle: As Zero, he wears a BadassCape that gets occasionally wrapped around his body like a tube, so he can unwrap it with his [[LargeHam dramatic]] [[MilkingTheGiantCow gestures]].
* AllGirlsWantBadBoys: They all want him, even C.C. in the alternate timeline. [[EvenTheGuysWantHim And some boys want him too.]]
* AlliterativeName: With his assumed surname: '''L'''elouch '''L'''amperouge.
* AlmostKiss: Most of his interactions with Kallen in R2 (and even in season 1 actually) ends up with an almost kiss to the point when they finally get to kiss for real it almost felt surreal for the many.
* AloofBigBrother: During the final arc. [[spoiler: As part of his Zero Requiem, he has to act like he doesn't care for Nunnally.]]
* AlternateUniverseReedRichardsIsAwesome: At least in terms of his less-than-stellar piloting skill in the anime. In ''VideoGame/{{Super Robot Wars Z}}2''. 2 he can become an impressive GameBreaker thanks to his very effective Shinkirou and Ace Bonus, and at one point in-story (depending on your acquisition of 'Zero Points') apparently ''fights [[Anime/MobileSuitGundamWing Heero]] [[AcePilot Yuy]] in the [[BiggerStick Wing Gundam Zero]] to a draw.''
* AlwaysSaveTheGirl: A FatalFlaw of Lelouch's. [[spoiler: Abandoning the Black Rebellion to rescue Nunnally causes the defeat of the Black Knights right as they were about to win, as well as Suzaku cornering and defeating him on Kamine Island.]] It ends up setting up the events of R2 and much of Lelouch's TraumaCongaLine.
* AntagonistInMourning: He was quite devastated when he was forced to kill his half-sister Euphemia, whom he was quite close to in childhood. He was crying when he shot her (in the manga, at least) and afterwards.
* AntiHero: Depending on how you look at him, he's either an exceptionally brutal UnscrupulousHero or a WellIntentionedExtremist with TragicVillain overtones.
* TheAntiNihilist: Yes, Lelouch is in a CrapsackWorld and acknowledges it, along with the fact he's going to have to do horrible things to reach his goals. That said, he genuinely still believes in a better world, as well as that people ''do'' want a happy, peaceful tomorrow. [[spoiler: That's in part why he gambles on his Zero Requiem; he stacks the deck in his favour as best he can and then trusts that humanity will, after having a person to hate and being given a symbol of a better world to rally behind, work towards that better tomorrow.]]
* ArmorPiercingQuestion: [[spoiler:When Marianne attempts to claim that she and Charles did actually care about Lelouch and Nunnally, he throws back in her face why if they loved their children so much did they not stop the war between Japan and Britannia. Her only response is to give an aggravated sneer, indicating that she and Charles never really cared if Lelouch and Nunnally lived since they planned on joining together the minds of the living and deceased anyway.]]
* AthleticallyChallenged: His smarts are offset by his complete lack of physical ability. He's utterly winded after trying and failing to dig a two-foot hole and gets outrun by his classmate Kallen while she's in a GoofySuit.
* AtLeastIAdmitIt: The primary difference between himself and Suzaku. They're both {{hypocrite}}s and {{Well Intentioned Extremist}}s, but Lelouch acknowledges his own hypocrisy and never once tries to justify it, whereas Suzaku is in the exact opposite and [[NeverMyFault refuses to own up to anything he does]]. Lelouch even lampshades it at one point, telling Suzaku point-blank that he [[HypocrisyNod doesn't have time to debate which of them is a bigger hypocrite]].
* TheAtoner: [[spoiler:In the GrandFinale, the Zero Requiem is revealed to be an elaborate public performance intended to personally atone for his own sins by making the world hate him in death, even though his chosen method, leading [[TheMutiny circumstances]], and [[InferredHolocaust consequences accounted for]], with no real exploration of alternatives that would be just as if not better for atonement, make it likely he has [[DeathSeeker another hidden motive at that point]].]]
* AttractiveBentGender: The {{Picture Drama}}s and games are surely ''very'' fond of having him [[CrossDresser go]] [[https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Luluko.jpg around]] [[https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Lulu_pretty.jpg in]] [[https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/codegeass/images/f/f2/Picture_Drama_9.34_-_5.png/revision/latest?cb=20130218160523 drag.]] [[StupidSexyFlanders Stupid Sexy]] [[MemeticMutation Luluko]]!
* AwesomeMomentOfCrowning: [[spoiler:The series reaches is climax with Lelouch crowned as the 99th Emperor of Britannia. True to form, it is one of the most dramatically presented moments in the entire series.]]
* AwesomenessByAnalysis: He is the only one smart enough to use Shinkiro's full combat potential.
* BadassBoast: Several. See the quote above, next to the picture. The one below doubles as both an example of this and a despair speech.
-->'''Lelouch:''' My name is Lelouch vi Britannia, eldest son of Empress Marianne, the prince who was abandoned by his empire. If anyone wishes to stop me, let them try! If there is anyone who can go beyond my despair...
* BadassBookworm: Before you say [[SquishyWizard ''huh?'']], remember in the second episode where Viletta threatened him by blowing the walls around him? He. Didn't. Even. Flinch. [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BR4P85eFu0w 2:50]]
* BadassBureaucrat: Aside from being a ManipulativeBastard, he proves to be a competent martial organizer.
* BadassCape: Wears a magnificent black one as Zero.
* BadLiar: He might be a ConsummateLiar, but when put on the spot he is ''incredibly'' awkward. He even has a few obvious tells that people who know him can easily see through. Unfortunately, most of the time circumstances mean no one calls him out on his terrible lies...or if they do it's not in the circumstances where it can be pursued.
* BatmanGambit: He loves exploiting character faults of enemies or "standard procedures" of organizations to win battles. He's also the victim of them occasionally, as opponents will occasionally exploit his own ComplexityAddiction or [[EvenEvilHasLovedOnes love of his friends and family]] to manipulate him.
* BattleOfWits: His specialty, both as a guy who does nothing but play chess in his spare time and as the chief tactician for the Black Knights. Even when he's actively piloting, his primarily role is using his brain.
* BecomingTheMask: Several times, on several different levels.
** He starts off using the Black Knights and his Zero identity just to destroy Britannia and build a better future for his sister. Ultimately ends up genuinely caring for their goals and works towards Japan's freedom.
** Starts off only treating [[CuteAndPsycho Rolo]] as his little brother for the sake of him being a useful ally [[spoiler: but his reaction during his HeroicSacrifice and then how he buries Rolo and leaves the pendant locket for him heavily implied it did in fact become genuine.]]
* TheBeautifulElite: Like every member of Ashford's Student Council, is considered impossibly handsome.
* BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor: His Geass gives him the power he always wanted in order to destroy his HatedHometown. It also causes him an uncountable number of personal losses. And he quickly discovers that his lifelong dream of destroying Britannia is a far more difficult and tragic process than he ever could have imagined.
* BeehiveBarrier: Shinkiro's Absolute Defense field allows Lelouch to generate energy shields that can withstand against nearly any attack.
* BelligerentSexualTension: With Kallen, she denies closeness, he teases her, he denies interest, she gets angry, summarizes their whole relationship.
* BestServedCold: One of his motivations behind his mission is to deliver vengeance to his father for his abandonment and what he represents as a Darwinist.
* BerserkButton: Has a few;
** Racism or any kind of injustice tends to rile him up, though it's not as big as the next one.
** Hurting or being rude to Suzaku for his heritage. A stand out example is when, thanks to Mao [[spoiler: revealing Suzaku killed his father and is a DeathSeeker]] [[HeroicBSOD breaking Suzaku]] not only does Lelouch condemn him to a FateWorseThanDeath, he actually ''physically'' tries to punch him. ''[[GeekPhysique Lelouch]]'' of all people ''actually tries to hit someone'', something he never does before or after, just cause Mao hurt Suzaku.
* BeyondTheImpossible: His dad said it was impossible to [[spoiler:Geass the world's equivalent to {{God}}]], and when you think how Geass is referred to as 'the power of the king' it makes sense. Lelouch thought otherwise.
* BigBad: [[spoiler:As Emperor Lelouch, to the world. It turns out to all be an act though.]]
* BigBrotherInstinct: He deeply loves Nunnally and protecting her is his reason for living. The idea of his sister Nunnally being in danger or having no one to take care of her if he is in danger of death (especially in episode 1 when he faces a Britannian squad) is enough to make him freak out.
* BigGood: Invoked. As "Zero" he is seen as the charismatic leader and inspiring savior of the Japanese people. He has gruesome tactics but he remains opposite the oppressive emperor from Britannia.
* BigScrewedUpFamily: Where the whole mess starts. The Britannian imperial family is MASSIVE, with a huge number of half-siblings all jockeying against each other for power and prestige. Lelouch's hatred of Britannia stems from this, as he's convinced that his mother's death, Nunally's crippling, and his exile to Japan are all directly caused by a jealous member of the royal family.
* BlatantLies: Considering the route he was going down, could you blame him for lying to everyone he ever knew?
* BlessedWithSuck: It also goes with CursedWithAwesome. On the other hand, it's almost a guarantee that the best possible outcome for him would be to become an immortal, as Nightmare of Nunnally demonstrated, and C.C showed us all too well how horrible that unlife could become.
* BornUnlucky: The bad luck is a little latent, but when it kicks in at around age 8, does it ever...
* BrainsEvilBrawnGood: Played with in that though he acts like a stereotypical villain, he is a WellIntentionedExtremist ByronicHero, whereas Suzaku is a CharlesAtlasSuperpower AntiVillain working for the BigBad.
* BrainyBrunette: He has jet-black hair and is an extraordinarily brilliant young man.
* BreakHerHeartToSaveHer:
** [[spoiler:Lelouch does this to Kallen and Nunnally during the final arc. And since they figure out the truth later on, they don't even end up hating him for it.]]
** In the compilation movies [[spoiler:Shirley is SparedByTheAdaptation, and manages to give him a love confession. He is forced to refuse, not wanting to put her in danger.]]
* BreakTheCutie: In his backstory; Lelouch used to be a CheerfulChild until his mother's assassination kicked off a chain of ''horrible'' events.
* BreakTheHaughty:
** Having had such success dealing with Clovis's army, Lelouch thinks that he will be able to defeat Cornelia's army with the same level of ease. He quickly learns that there is a large difference between the two leaders as Cornelia is an actual tactician with war experience and would have died (or been brought back as Prince Lelouch into Britannia) if not for C.C.'s intervention. It serves as his first total defeat and teaches him to be less cocky about his enemies.
** The aftermath of Narita does the same but in a different way [[spoiler: forcing him to truly come to terms with the fact ''actual people'' will be hurt and killed by his actions. Though he moves forward anyways, it's with the knowledge that he truly will be hurting people on his way to creating a "gentle world".]]
** The final moment of this comes [[spoiler: as the SAZ Massacre kicks off. Before that he saw Zero as the "savior" of Japan and ultimately the world. After the horrifying SAZ Massacre that came because of his choices and carelessness, he ditches that angle entirely, working instead as an inspirational and even diplomatic leader come R2.]]
* BrilliantButLazy: His school persona. Of course, he's anything but lazy.
* BrokenBird: Prior to getting his Geass, he is bored, pessimistic and feels trapped after everything that has happened in his backstory, which has left him wanting to change the world, something for which he has had to bide his time; something which [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-0lVuRlaGts Stage 0.97]] makes very clear. His tendency to return to a broken state whenever things get particularly bad proves he's [[BeneathTheMask still this underneath all his bravado]] and it's heavily implied this plus his final TraumaCongaLine results in the [[spoiler: Zero Requiem plan.]]
* BroughtDownToBadass: In Episode 20 of R2, [[spoiler:Lelouch has lost his manpower, support, and the trust of the Black Knights; all he has left is his Geass power and his personal Knightmare frame, the Shinkirō.]] He uses both to maximum effect when he [[spoiler:finally decides to take down his father, Geass'ing an entire military base and using the Shinkirō's inventory of explosives to trap his father and himself inside of the Sword of Akasha.]]
* ButNowIMustGo: [[spoiler:At the end of "Nightmare of Nunnally", he says goodbye to his friends and loved ones before leaving to become a Demon King.]]
* ByronicHero: Attractive, charismatic, single-minded, sophisticated, introspective, melancholy, idealistic, ruthless in the pursuit of his cause, driven to rebellion, [[TragicFlaw tragically flawed]], arrogant, {{ambitio|nIsEvil}}us... His life and character traits practically read like a textbook case.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:C-D]]
* CainAndAbel: Given that he's rebelling against the Britannian royal family, this is to be expected. He serves as the Cain to Euphemia and [[spoiler:Nunnally]]'s Abels, and the Abel to Clovis, Cornelia, [[spoiler:[[BrainwashedAndCrazy Euphemia]]]] and Schneizel's Cains.
* CallBack: Lelouch's first Geass command at the start of the first season and ''R2'' is to brainwash the attackers into committing suicide:
-->'''Lelouch''': Lelouch vi Britannia commands you, now all of you... die!
* CallingTheOldManOut: Aside from his desire to make Nunnally's dream of a kind world come true, Lelouch's main reason for basically ''starting a world war'' was to do this to the Emperor. (Let it never be said that he does anything by half-measures.) Near the end of the series, he finally does it.
* {{Camp}}: Initially only as Zero but [[spoiler:Emperor Lelouch gets quite campy.]]
* CannotSpitItOut: Lelouch has a habit of dodging questions even when he'd be better off answering them.
* CardCarryingVillain: Lelouch invokes this [[spoiler: during his reign as Emperor deliberately playing the part of a power-hungry despot to his former friends, family and the world at large as part of the [[ThanatosGambit Zero Requiem]]]].
* CartwrightCurse: [[spoiler:Lelouch loses two of his love interests across both seasons, Euphemia whom Lelouch is [[ShootTheDog forced to kill]] in R1.23 and Shirley who dies at the hands of Rolo in R2.13.]]
* CatchPhrase:
** "All tasks at hand have been cleared."
** "Lelouch vi Britannia commands you..."
** Most of his other catchphrases are ArcWords. "I am Zero!", "I will destroy the world and create it anew", "The only ones who should kill are those prepared to be killed", and a few more.
* CelibateHero: He has a few love interests (mainly Shirley, Kallen, and C.C.), but he does not pursue any of them romantically in the show, out of necessity given his profession. As for his heroism, his rebellion has its roots in providing a safe and properous future for his youngest sister, his friends and others that are threatened by Britiania's method-of-operation. Thus, his goals are heroic and/or sympathetic and he has standards that he is (initially) unwilling to discard.
* CharacterDevelopment: Lelouch becomes more and more extreme - and in some ways, heroic - as the series progresses. He also becomes more openly emotional and less stoic.
* CharacterTic: The flourishing gesture he uses to draw attention to his eye before invoking the Geass. Justified in that his Geass relies on eye contact to work.
* TheChessmaster: Literally and figuratively. Although as a '''literal''' chess master, it's more of an InformedAbility, as no one in-universe really seems to know how the game works.
* ChessMotifs: He's the king on the chess board; his Zero costume even resembles one. Although his physical combat skills are less than impressive, he's the one who commands the whole board. He's always on the battlefield with his troops, because, as he puts it, if the king won't lead, his subjects won't follow. Mind you, that doesn't usually work in actual chess, and certainly not as Lelouch applies it, but it is just a metaphor. And then, there's the [[spoiler:Zero Requiem, in which he played the role of the White King, dressed in white and gold clothes instead of his usual black and purple ones, which also doubled as his funeral garb, with Zero as the Black King, who put the White King in checkmate.]] It speaks volumes that whenever ''Code Geass'' is in a ''VideoGame/SuperRobotWars'' installment, Lelouch is frequently one of the main commanders and strategists, despite the other characters sharing the role being older and much more experienced.
* ChickMagnet: He is extremely intelligent, polite, nice, good-looking, and quite rich, so he gets the attention of ''a lot'' of women. Namely C.C., Kallen, Shirley, Euphy, Milly, Kaguya, and about ''a hundred and twenty-something'' unnamed girls from school.
* ChildhoodFriends: With Suzaku, they first met when Lelouch and Nunnally were sent to Japan as barganing tools. It took a little bit but they quickly became friends.
* ChronicHeroSyndrome: Not as blatant about it like [[AllLovingHeroine Euphie]] but Lelouch tends to jump in to help others at risk; this is how he first ended up getting his Geass (going over to the crashed van when no one else would to see if they were alright and if he could help) and at the start of R2 the brainwashed Lelouch steps up to help a random Eleven servant girl (actually Kallen in disguise but he doesn't recognize her thanks to said brainwashing) just because he can't stand by while that happens.
* ClarkKenting: Sort of. Lelouch does wear a mask that conceals his whole head and does tricks with voice recording to throw people off the trail. But the fact that his sister Nunnally--who is blind and therefore relies primarily on hearing--never recognizes him as Zero is a bit much. Or any of the other people who are close to him. This can be partially explained, however, by assuming that he was speaking Japanese as Zero and English as Lelouch. Your voice tends to change when you speak different languages, which is why Japanese tends to come out breathier than English. This, coupled with the fact that there's a high chance that the Britannians don't know any Japanese, might explain why no one recognized it. They still didn't explain Nunnally and Suzaku's cases though.
** Except [[spoiler:Euphemia, who quickly becomes suspicious, and by the next time they meet, is absolutely certain of the fact. Ironically, this is probably because she has no idea what he's supposed to sound or look like.]]
** Made worse by the fact that he is supposedly in hiding from pretty much all of Britannia, even before he becomes Zero, and yet he uses his real name from when he was a prince. Though, Lelouch could, however, simply be a common name in the CG Universe, the same way royals' names tend to become common names over time in our universe, and given there are hundreds of princes and princesses, the odds of any one individual being able to pick up on it are rather small.
** It's likely, considering he talks to people like Cornelia and Schneizel as Zero so the speaking Japanese thing doesn't work, that this comes across as a flimsy disguise because the ''audience'' needs to know it's Lelouch as Zero. Also, as the trope page points out in the [[TruthInTelevision real life section]], just adjusting body language and speech patterns (Lelouch is shown in the original Japanese dub to have a more arrogant, formal speech pattern and deeper voice as Zero/Lelouch vi Britannia compared to Lelouch Lamperouge) can be enough to conceal your identity. [[spoiler: Euphie likely figured out it was Lelouch due to his minor slip that hinted to him knowing her and him ''acting like a prince'' as Zero.]]
* ClaspYourHandsIfYouDeceive: Lelouch is fond of doing this.
* TheComplainerIsAlwaysWrong: Feels the Britannian government is rotten to the core and must be dismantled. Too bad for him, two of the most important people in his life don't agree.
* ConspicuouslyPublicAssassination: [[spoiler:It's a CallBack to when he rescued Suzaku in season 1 episode 4.]]
* ConsummateLiar: Very convincing at telling lies although Suzaku doesn't buy some towards the end of R2. [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gw_P_0cYvmY&list=PL1D1D195CCAA075C5 How it all began, however, was simply heartbreaking.]] On the other hand, what he normally lies about tends toward being either blatantly obvious or completely illogical - like Zero being a hero to the Japanese... yet built from the ground up with western aesthetics, or [[spoiler:telling people that want to kill him that he's been manipulating and controlling them, ''when they're aiming guns at him''.]]
* ControlFreak: [[PlayingWithATrope Played with]]. It's not as obvious as other examples in fiction, but Lelouch definitely prefers to have control over situations and his complex plans often rely on him being in control of the situation. This likely is a product of his rather traumatic childhood.
* CoolBigBro: Lelouch is ''deeply'' devoted to his younger sister, Nunally, always thinking of her best interests first.
* CoolMask: As Zero. Overlaps with CoolHelmet.
* CosmicPlaything: Regardless of his karma meter, he just can't catch a break. The only plan that went off without a hitch or a ButterflyOfDoom chain of cause-and-effect is [[spoiler: the plan where he makes everyone hate him, then dies.]]
* CreateYourOwnVillain: Did this with Nina [[spoiler:when the latter lost it after Euphie's death.]] And in a sense happened to him [[spoiler:after the Black Knights turned on him and with no apparent recourse or resolve left, he decided to go all out with his Geass, eventually becoming the Demon Emperor.]]
* CrucifiedHeroShot: [[spoiler:He dies at the bottom of a trail of his blood leading from the middle of the Britannian flag, the resulting visage being [[WhatDoYouMeanItsNotSymbolic reminiscent of the Christian cross]].]]
* CursedWithAwesome: It's also BlessedWithSuck. On one hand, aside from some DiabolusExMachina, his Geass has virtually no drawbacks, and he can get around the ones that do. Except for one: ItOnlyWorksOnce, and he even finds a small way to get around that [[spoiler:once Jeremiah gets his Geass Canceler]].
* CynicismCatalyst: The assassination of his mother drove Lelouch's personality in a darker direction and he vowed to make the world a decent place for his sister to live in. This gets going full force when he gains his Geass at the beginning of the story.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Mother killed. Little sister injured and traumatized. Father abandoned him and little sister. While he and Nunnally befriended Suzaku as children, the young exiled prince had to witness more horrors from his former home to the point he made an oath to destroy all Britannians. No wonder Lelouch grew to hate Britannia.
* DarkIsNotEvil: He is the leader of the Black Knights and while he can be very ruthless and morally flexible...he isn't exactly evil in the truest sense
* DarkMessiah: To the core. He takes on this role intentionally to the Japanese Liberation movement, allowing his Geass and tactical brilliance to turn a hopeless remnant into a force capable of truly threatening Britannian hegemony. However, Lelouch's hatred of the empire is ''intensely'' personal, and the brutality of the war and the sacrifices he has to endure drive him to increasingly tragic extremes in pursuit of this goal.
* DeadpanSnarker: Has a dry, witty sense of humor.
* DeathGlare: He can look really, really nasty when he wants to.
* DeathSeeker: [[spoiler:Becomes this following both Nunnally's apparent death and the Black Knights' betrayal.]]
* DeathWail: He does this after [[spoiler:Shirley dies]].
* DecapitatedArmy: [[spoiler:The reaction to his death. It causes his entire army (giant robots, tanks, and armed soldiers) to collapse and run away from an angry mob. Makes sense actually, since he has ZeroPercentApprovalRating and the only members of his army who aren't [[MindRape brainwashed to be his slave]] is in on the plan.]]
* DeceasedFallGuyGambit: The power of Absolute Command makes this easy for a ChessMaster like Lelouch.
* DeclarationOfProtection: Goes to varying extremities to protect his loved ones, be they his little sister Nunnally, his friend Shirley, who incidentally had an unrequited crush on him, and his bodyguard Kallen, who also had a crush on him. Then there's Rolo, whom Lelouch used this to manipulate.
* DeconstructedCharacterArchetype:
** Serves as one for the shady {{Chessmaster}} typical among his genre. Lelouch is capable of being devious and manipulative, but the show take the time to delve into his DarkAndTroubledPast, offering explanations as to why he behaves the way he does. Furthermore it humanizes him by highlighting the more sympathetic aspects of his life like his passion for freedom and equality as well as his genuine love for his sister and friends. All in all, it emphasizes how someone this destructive justifies their actions by exploring what they stand to lose if they don't act and the original source that shaped them into who they are.
** On top of that, the show also deconstructs the nature of the Chessmaster's carefully constructed plans and how fragile they really are. Lelouch weaves scheme after scheme in his war against Britannia. Regardless of how brilliant they may seem at first glance, they always generate far-reaching repercussions that come back to bite him hard. It exemplifies how even the best laid plans are vulnerable to forces outside of their control and can have consequences that their architect could never have foreseen.
* DefeatMeansFriendship: {{Subverted|Trope}}. [[spoiler:After Lelouch finally beats Schneizel in the second-to-last episode, he uses a Geass to force Schneizel to serve him. Or, more precisely, to serve '''Zero''' -- a distinction soon to become important.]] Played straight when he first met Suzaku, though.
* DefectorFromDecadence: His response to Charles' [[BystanderSyndrome cold indifference to Marianne's murder and Nunnally's crippling]] and declaration that the Britannia is defined by the strong ruling over the weak. He gets sent to Japan along with Nunnally for his troubles. The takeover of Japan by Britannia while he and his sister are there as political hostages when Britannia attacks makes Lelouch lose it because of the obvious betrayal. Ironically Lelouch's and Nunnally's presumed death is why several of his siblings of relevance hate Japan because they think it was Japan's fault. MoralMyopia, anyone?
* DespairEventHorizon: Goes over the edge [[spoiler:following Nunnally's apparent death and the Black Knights' betrayal, leading him to plan on isolating himself inside the Sword of Akasha with Charles, and later, the Zero Requiem. See also: DeathSeeker.]]
* DesperatelyLookingForAPurposeInLife:
** Subverted. His boredom mainly has to do with his initial inability to fulfill his wish to go against Britannia, and being unable to exert his real intellect.
** Played straight when he's {{Brainwashed}} to be just the ordinary "Lelouch Lamperouge" at the start of R2. Lacking his original ambitions, Lelouch still desires something more than what he's got in the present, something that leads him to do some reckless things in pursuit of it.
* {{Determinator}}: He's willing to do ''anything'' to ensure a better world for Nunnally. He keeps going no matter how much physiological trauma he goes through, see {{Iron Woobie}}.
%%* DeusAngstMachina: It only gets worse during the final 9 episodes of the series.
* DevotedToYou: Shirley and Kallen just can't stop loving him, no matter how painful it is. This eventually [[spoiler:gets Shirley killed]] and Kallen's willingness to die for him is the reason why Lelouch was adamant in ''excluding'' her from the Zero Requiem. Also, Rolo is blindly devoted to him and will do anything for him, even die.
* DidntSeeThatComing: Despite his {{Chessmaster}} status, a lot of Lelouch's plans end up blowing up in his face simply because of outside forces he in ''no way'' could have predicted or seen coming. The most infamous example of this is episode 22. [[spoiler:While talking to Euphemia, he tastelessly jokes that if he wanted to, he could make her do anything he wanted, like "kill all the Japanese." He realizes a second too late that his Geass has become [[PowerIncontinence permanently active]] during their conversation, meaning Euphie is going to do exactly that.]]
* DidNotGetTheGirl: [[spoiler:The amount of ShipSinking in R2 was epic.]]
* DidYouJustPunchOutCthulhu: [[spoiler:Lelouch uses Geass on God itself to stop [[AssimilationPlot Ragnarok]] and kill his parents. In all fairness, however, he asked politely and didn't even include the second part, so it's more like Did You Just Ask Cthulhu For A Favor?]]
* DiedInYourArmsTonight: [[spoiler:In the last episode of R2, he dies in Nunnally's arms.]]
* DisproportionateRetribution: Sort of. To avenge the death of his mother, he wishes to bring about the destruction of the entire Britannian royal line -- with the notable exceptions of his beloved sister Nunnally, Euphemia and himself. However, he has plenty of legitimate gripes against the Empire which do not involve those two things, mainly the Social Darwinism that drives the country to conquer the entire world and oppress everyone who isn't Britannian, and the aforementioned members of the royal family are the only ones known to oppose said policies. It makes even more sense if you consider the events of the first episode. Lelouch unwittingly falls into a rebel plot to steal what appears to be poison gas, but is in fact a captive of the Britannian Empire. Initially, he's doing everything he can to extricate himself from the plot, and finally manages to find a window of opportunity when Suzaku recognizes him. However, Suzaku's Commanding Officer is ruthless to the point of being StupidEvil, and he ''attempts to murder his own soldier'' for daring to trust the hapless Lelouch. On top of that, Prince Clovis has decided to initiate a purge in order to cover up the truth the rebels were about to uncover. While Lelouch is trying to escape with girl that the rebels were carrying, the very same StupidEvil general corners him, kills the girl ([[spoiler:for all of about 10 seconds]]), and is moments away from murdering Lelouch when she gives him his Geass ability. ''Anybody'' would lose their patience with the Britannian empire after going through all that shit.
** A much straighter example happens in R2 - after [[spoiler: Shirley's death Lelouch goes on a RoaringRampageOfRevenge against the Geass order, taking a secret unit with him to wipe them all out...as revenge for Rolo having killed her. Since Lelouch still needs Rolo for his plans, though, he instead displaces his anger elsewhere]].
* DramaticHighPerching: In the first season TitleSequence. In-show, Zero does this ''a lot'' for dramatic effect and to enhance his air of power and mystery.
* DontTellMama: He tries to keep his sister ignorant of his alter ego.
* DoomMagnet: The amount of bad things that happen to him and those around him is ''insane''.
* DueToTheDead: [[spoiler: Buries Rolo with his ''own hands'' after his HeroicSacrifice, even marking his grave with the pendant he gave him while believing him to be truly his brother (and thus was originally meant for Nunnally). Despite Lelouch having declared he hated him before, this scene showing he took the time to bury Rolo respectfully proves he grew to genuinely care for him.]]
* DudeLooksLikeALady: Oh yes. In one PictureDrama, he was made to look prettier than the girls simply by putting on a wig and an ElegantGothicLolita dress.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:E-H]]
* ElCidPloy: As part of [[spoiler:Zero Requiem. The lynchpin of the operation is Suzaku taking the mantle of Zero permanently, while Lelouch takes on the role of the Emperor of Britannia]].
* TheEmperor: [[spoiler:The 99th Emperor of Britannia. He's more ruthless than his father ever was [[ThanatosGambit but that's all a part of the plan]]. ]]
* EstablishingCharacterMoment:
** After ordering a group of soldiers to kill themselves, Lelouch looks shocked and disturbed for a few seconds, before breaking into a smile.
** Another, often overlooked takes place moments earlier. The soldiers are seconds away from killing him, and he pretty much knows that he's about to die... and his final thoughts are of Nunnally. Then C.C. gives him Geass.
** Before either of this, there is the AMinorKidroduction moment in the prologue, revealing that he wants to destroy Britannia, followed by the introduction of him in the present where he confidently comes into a chess match where he's at a disadvantage, remaining calm and snarky despite how the {{Jerkass}} noble is acting, before ruthlessly crushing him in the chess match. After that, he proves to be apathetic to the surroundings around him, bemoaning in his InternalMonologue his lack of power to make a difference.
* EtTuBrute: Happens twice, and with him getting sold out to the two baddest of the {{Big Bad}}s in the show (obviously barring V. V. [[spoiler:who gets offed in R2 14)]].
* EvenBadMenLoveTheirMamas: Though the bad part is debatable. Flipped around in ''R2'' episode 21: [[spoiler:not only does he come to hate her within one episode, after Marianne shows him her true colors, he also erased her from existence along with Charles]].
* EvenTheGuysWantHim: Of course Milly, Shirley, Kallen and Kaguya are head-over-heels in love with him. (As well as 108 other girls. And C.C. Possibly.) And then, there's his complex dynamic with [[TheRival Suzaku]] and Rolo's [[{{Yandere}} psychotic devotion]] for him.
** With regards to Rolo, his voice actor has absolutely no doubt that Rolo is in love with Lelouch, as he explicitly mentions in more than one of his interviews about the character.
** In one PictureDrama, Suzaku tells a cross-dressing Lelouch that he "looks beautiful", eats a piece of rice off of his face in one audio drama, and ends up kissing him in another audio drama [[note]]Though that one is a non-canon crack audio drama[[/note]]. In the Turn 9.34 picture drama when C.C., Kallen, and Lelouch dress up as belly dancers to sneak into the Chinese Federation, C.C. and Kallen introduce Lelouch as their "beautiful older sister" and the men ogle him. Of course, Lelouch has a masculine voice, so when he speaks, they realize that he's a guy. However, one of the men says he doesn't mind because he thinks Lelouch is "beautiful".
** Suzuaku once states that his most important person is a tie between Euphemia and Lelouch.
* EveryoneHasStandards:
** Despite not mentioning it (at least not often), he does regret the deaths of innocents as a consequence of his actions and Lelouch is an angel compared to the Britannian rulers he faces off against.
** In spite of hating Mao for what he did to Shirley, Nunnally, and Suzaku, even Lelouch pities him for what he was put through as a result of his Geass and calls out C.C. for cruelly abandoning him all because Mao couldn't hold up his end of their contract.
* EvilCostumeSwitch: [[spoiler:When he became Emperor and likely [[InvokedTrope invoked]] as well considering the Zero Requiem.]]
* EvilGloating:
** Lelouch is fond of this. It's very lucky that all of his Geass victims are polite enough to listen to his monologues before he orders them to commit suicide, or whatever else they would really rather not ever do.
** After C.C. [[spoiler:fixes his erased memories at the start of R2]], she asks him about this. He dismisses her criticism with no attempt to justify himself at all. Presumably it's just not in his nature to turn down an opportunity to [[LargeHam be dramatic]].
* EvilLaugh: Frequently, as Zero. Borders on self-parody. One of his [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6a0P4bMP9So defeat quotes]] when piloting the Sword of Damocles consists of this.
* EvilOverlord: [[spoiler:Setting himself up as one is a requisite for his Zero Requiem ZeroApprovalGambit.]]
* ExactWords: He distracts then ambushes Schneizel during their final battle and Geasses him, ordering him to "serve Zero". [[spoiler:At that point, Lelouch ''is'' Zero, but in the finale, [[LegacyCharacter Zero]] appears to accost him, actually Suzaku in disguise. This ensures that Schneizel will continue to work for humanity's benefit even after Lelouch dies]].
* {{Expy}}:
** Lelouch has been considered at least a partial Expy of any number of fictional and even historical figures, especially the Byronic heroes of ''ComicBook/VForVendetta'' and ''Literature/TheCountOfMonteCristo''.
** He is very similar to Reinhard von Lohengramm from ''Literature/LegendOfTheGalacticHeroes'', even down to the sister part.
** Wears black all the time, lies to the people he loves and is obsessed with avenging a dead parent. Is that you, Theatre/{{Hamlet}}?
* FaceHeelTurn: Towards the end of the series, he goes from a troubled but still well-intentioned AntiHero to a [[spoiler:vicious tyrant and KnightTemplar slaughtering millions for the sake of world peace in the final five episodes of the anime, all for the sake of a ZeroApprovalGambit of questionable effectiveness.]]
* FacePalm: [[OnlySaneMan Lelouch]] [[https://pre00.deviantart.net/2f71/th/pre/i/2016/019/3/9/lelouch_s_facepalm_by_kyoflameashhylden-d9ol5sm.jpg has one]] when he realizes that [[spoiler: to keep Shirley from knowing about the secret underground base when she came to the library, his maid Sayoko, who was disguising as him at the time, kissed her. Also when she set him up on 108 dates.]]
* FacingTheBulletsOneLiner: When faced with [[spoiler:a firing squad made up of his own men, he takes off his mask, [[EvilLaugh laughs in their faces]] and tells them they are all fools who he was using like pawns]]. Subverted a second later when its revealed that he's only doing this to [[spoiler:[[ItsNotYouItsMyEnemies trick Kallen into leaving his side, rather then staying to die with him]]]].
* FakeMemories: Suffers from this on two occasions, as the Emperor's Geass allows him to imprint false memories and personalities.
* FallenHero: In some parts of the second season, he is [[WellIntentionedExtremist reasonably well meaning for a while]], but ultimately [[StatusQuoIsGod the results of his old sins catch up with him]] in a seriously [[DisproportionateRetribution disproportionate way]] and he falls back to his more [[ByronicHero tragically flawed]] [[JerkassWoobie ways]].
* FallenPrincess: A GenderFlip of the usual trope; he was once a prince of Britannia but after his mother's assassination and his stint as hostage in Japan, he's no longer such and lives an ordinary life until Geass and becoming Zero.
* FatalAttractor: ''Very'' bad things tend to happen to those he loves.
* FatalFlaw: His stubbornness, arrogance and pride have lead him to make terrible decisions both on and off the battlefield, in fact his biggest flaw is actually his hubris since [[spoiler:it causes his rebellion in R1 to end in defeat when he abandons the battle to save his sister only to be sold out to his father by his best friend who now hates him for killing the woman he loved.]]
* FixFic: [[spoiler:In ''VideoGame/{{Super Robot Wars Z}}2''. 2, if you follow the IF path, you are given the chance to avert the betrayal. The result: Kallen [[GetAHoldOfYourselfMan knocks some sense into him]] when he feels despondent and [[DeathSeeker suicidal]] over Nunnally's apparent fate, he comes clean and apologizes to the Black Knights and they accept and remain loyal, Rolo lives because he doesn't need to sacrifice himself, Schneizel's plan fails, and thus, the {{Zero|ApprovalGambit}} [[ThanatosGambit Requiem]] is completely averted. And for nice bonus points, Euphie and Shirley (the former a case of NeverFoundTheBody) are alive at the end as well!]]
* {{Foil}}: Lelouch has many throughout the series.
** His best friend Suzaku is perhaps the most obvious. They both start out rather idealistic despite their tragic backgrounds, although Suzaku is undeniably more naive. After [[spoiler:Euphemia's death]] their idealism is shattered, with Lelouch growing both more ruthless and more desperate, and Suzaku's naïveté replaced by a cold hatred of Lelouch that leads to him [[spoiler:ignoring the risk to Nunnally's life to subdue Lelouch and take him to the Emperor, and hold him down while Charles wipes his mind and replaces it with false memories in a scene uncomfortably reminiscent of a rape.]] However, despite their teetering mental instability neither of them loses their desire to make the world a better place and atone for the horrible things they've done with Zero Requiem.
** His sister Euphemia shares his desire for a more peaceful world and she develops an independent streak to help make that happen. In the end she even manages to win Lelouch over, but sadly any hope of this happening is lost when Lelouch makes a bad joke which [[spoiler:geasses Euphemia into trying to commit genocide on the Japanese. Lelouch is forced to kill her publicly during her spree,]] which drives him further into madness. Perhaps the most telling foil between them is [[spoiler:their deaths. They are both the targets of a ConspicuouslyPublicAssassination which sees them brutally murdered in front of a crowd. They die in the arms of a loved one (Euphemia in Suzaku's and Lelouch in Nunnally's) while the world cheers their killer: Zero.]]
** His father, Emperor Charles zi Britannia. First off, they both have geasses which involve controlling people's minds. Second, they are both commanding figures with charisma and ruthlessness, with a single overarching goal behind all of their ploys and schemes. Third, they [[spoiler:plan to destroy the world and remake it in their own image, Charles with the Ragnarok Connection and Lelouch with Zero Requiem.]] Charles fails. Lelouch doesn't. Ironically both serve as the arch enemy to the respective main characters (Charles to Lelouch and Lelouch to Suzaku) for the deaths of Marianne and Euphemia.
** Mao and Lelouch have a few similarities, the most prominent being their relationships with C.C. Mao, like Lelouch, was granted his geass by C.C., although Lelouch was a jaded 17-year-old while Mao was an innocent 6-year-old, and their inability to control their geass proceeded to cause them great tragedy and despair, Lelouch with such events as [[spoiler:Euphemia's death]] and Mao with the insanity brought on from reading the minds of everyone around him. They both share a special connection to C.C., in part because she is immune to their geasses, which means they are safe around her. However, Mao became completely driven to madness from his geass and overreliant on C.C., which led to his terrifying obsession with her and hatred and jealousy towards Lelouch, while Lelouch develops an intimate bond with her and and fully intends on fulfilling his contract to answer her single wish, so long as it doesn't threaten his overall goal.
* ForgotTheCall: [[spoiler: R2 begins with Lelouch in this position due to LaserGuidedAmnesia erasing Zero, Nunnally, and his royal heritage. By the end of the first episode, HesBack.]]
* FriendlessBackground: While Lelouch is shown to be very popular at school he doesn’t seem to have many real close intimate relationships with many people. Instead being the big man on campus. CC and Suzaku seem to be the few people he is comfortable trusting and being close enough to be both his accomplices and confidants.
* FromNobodyToNightmare: Went from a simple Britannian schoolboy into a masked revolutionary and symbol of justice for the Japanese people. After that, [[spoiler:he's the Emperor of Britannia. And then after that, he's Emperor of the whole globe.]]
* FreudianExcuse: A lot of his issues can be traced to his mother's death, that confrontation with his father when he was child, and the subsequent exile and time spent in Japan as a hostage (and not a warmly received one either - he and his ''crippled'' sister were placed in a '''shed''') which was topped off by the war.
* TheGadfly: Teases Kallen during season 1 as part of his identity towards her at Ashford, so she won't suspect he is Zero.
* GainingTheWillToKill: Lelouch throws up after his first murder (granted, he brought it upon himself by shooting a guy--his half-brother, no less--in the face at close range) but ItGetsEasier for him.
* GambitRoulette: A couple of his plans; this is especially apparent in his battle against Mao in Episodes 15 and 16 of R1, which really show how cunning the guy is.
* TheGamblingAddict: Before becoming Zero, he was infamous for his intense gambling addiction, often skipping classes and running off to casinos. Slightly averted in that it was his own way to cope with "[[EmptyShell going through the motions of living]]." It's also used to showcase his willingness to take risks on a long shot for spectacular payoffs, a trait which certainly manifests itself throughout the rest of the series. After becoming Zero, he used his known gambling tendencies for a short while as a cover for his Black Knights operations. Suzaku firmly suspected that Mao was a criminal that Lelouch pilfered in a game. He never learned who Mao really was, though.
* GeekPhysique: It's a RunningGag that Lelouch is ''utter crap'' at anything physical. To the point Milly in a fancy dress can outrun him. [[spoiler:Though in one case it backfired '''HORRIBLY''' as an example of ChekhovsGag, when he accidentally Geassed Euphemia into killing the Japanese, he had no means of catching up to her to stop her.]]
* GeneralRipper: An {{aver|tedTrope}}sion. While he will engage in ruthless tactics and use his subordinates as pawns, he does have his standards, typically goes to extremes out of necessity rather than obsession, and will enter the battlefield along with his troops.
* GenerationXerox: Not only having inherited the ManipulativeBastard gene from Chuck, his life story is playing out much like his father's, with the characters around him playing out similar roles to Chuck's earlier years. V.V. even mentions that he sort of liked Lelouch for his similarities to Charles.
** If we take the levels that they are both willing to go to in achieving their ultimate goal, then Lelouch's [[spoiler: bloodthirstiness in achieving Zero Requiem is not too different from Charles' Ragnarok plan.]]
** His incredible acting abilities [[spoiler: turn out to come from his mother [[BitchInSheepsClothing Marianne]] considering her true nature that was revealed at the end and in extra materials. In that regard, his manipulative ability to gain the loyalty and adoration of various people also comes from her.]]
* GenghisGambit: [[spoiler: Part of his ThanatosGambit, Zero Requiem.]]
* GoodEyesEvilEyes: His eyes are ambiguous, as they are fairly large throughout (in stark contrast to [[Manga/DeathNote another anime Magnificent Bastard he's often compared to]]).
* GoodIsNotNice: Lelouch is more than willing to ShootTheDog to make ends meet, and whether he was even "good" in the first place is debatable. That, and the fact that he's more than a bit of a stuck-up, arrogant ass. [[spoiler: But in the end, Lelouch's actions created a better world.]]
* GoOutWithASmile: [[spoiler: He dies with a smile on his face after the Zero Requiem has been completed, with Nunnally at his side and aware of his good intentions.]]
* GoneHorriblyRight: In the first season, he gave Suzaku the Geass command to "live" in order to protect him from [[HonorBeforeReason refusal to disobey orders even when it would kill him]]. That very same command [[spoiler:later leads Suzaku, cornered and about to be killed by Kallen, to detonate the FLEIJA nuke right in the middle of Tokyo, killing 35 million people.]]
* GoryDiscretionShot: Used when Lelouch kills his half-brother Clovis and whenever he employs his Geass to order mass suicides.
* GracefulLoser: Mostly averted; he just can't accept defeat and will do everything in his power to avoid it - and for the most part, he does. [[spoiler:Eventually played straight when finally confronted by the now-treacherous Black Knights at gunpoint; he taunts them and accepts what comes for him. But then Rolo rescues him, and the rest is history.]]
* GrewASpine: Somewhat. He's always on the battlefield, but he tended to hang back, [[TheStrategist give orders and work behind the scenes]], largely because [[WeakButSkilled he's a terrible fighter but a great tactician.]] As time goes on, he's seen on the frontlines more and more often, and he even flies head-on into the path of a ''nuclear bomb.''
* GuileHero: He prefers to play politics to sideline his opponents most of the time. For instance, at one point after losing his most important fighter and being attacked by the two most powerful armies in that universe - the Chinese and the Britannian - he manages to manipulate the Eunuch Generals into announcing their evil plans to their entire country, inciting riots and getting them to lose their Britannian support. This plan went very smoothly because he managed to steal it from a third bad guy without that third opponent ever telling anyone about it, who had no choice but to support Lelouch after this fight. Using politics he managed to sideline one bad empire, destroy the second one and get the support of the third one.
* GuiltComplex: It's partly what leads to such actions as [[spoiler:the Zero Requiem]]. Deconstructed though, as [[spoiler:the Zero Requiem]] required him to commit atrocities that were ''much'' worse than anything he had done previously.
* HairstyleInertia: His hair is in the same style as it was in his youth.
* HasAType: A few of his love interests have been redheads. There's Shirley, who has pursued Lelouch throughout the entirety of the show, Euphemia, and Kallen. Euphemia is one of two members of the Britannian royal family that Lelouch doesn't want dead - the other being his sister Nunnally - and [[spoiler: when Lelouch was forced to [[ShootTheDog shoot her]]]], he admitted that Euphemia was his "first love". While Lelouch has acknowledged Shirley's feelings and reciprocates, he is unable to respond to them properly due to the ItsNotYouItsMyEnemies he has going on at the moment. Kallen's feelings for him are clear, but he [[BreakHisHeartToSaveHim pushes her away]] to keep her from getting caught up in [[FatalAttractor all the shit that happens to the people he loves]].
* HeartbrokenBadass: After [[spoiler: his mother, Euphemia, Shirley and Rolo's deaths. Then, there's Nunnally's supposed death, after which he lost his cool in 3 seconds flat]].
* HiddenHeartOfGold: Lelouch puts on a facade of being a rather shallow jerk who would rather do nothing in the face of trouble. As that is basically the opposite of Zero, the dramatic revolutionary, it helps Lelouch avoid suspicion. It works so well that [[spoiler:Kallen, a rather clever woman, is taken ''entirely'' off guard that Zero, the man she idolized, and Lelouch, the man she came to despise, are the same person. It also backfires as she abandons him at the worst possible moment from the shock of the revelation.]]
* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler:Zig-zagged. He turns himself into the most hated person in the world, therefore disgracing his name for all of human history with no one besides a few knowing his true intentions, so that the world will come together against him and no longer hate each other when he dies. However, this appears to have been largely motivated by his DeathSeeker tendencies, as he had other less destructive options for world peace. In addition, actually implementing the Zero Requiem required him to commit enough war crimes and mass murders to make him the most hated tyrant in history, with the light novels giving him a body count of ''80 million'', meaning he did incredibly horrible things in the name of his "sacrifice."]]
* HeroicBSOD: He has a long list of these. Among others, [[spoiler:discovering Suzaku was piloting the Lancelot, when he finds out he Geass'd Euphemia on accident and the resulting consequences, when he's unable to save Nunally early in R2 and she becomes the Viceroy of Japan which leads to him becoming so depressed that he nearly tries to inject Refrain [[AttemptedRape almost forcing himself on Kallen]] and finally when Nunally is seemingly caught in the FLEIJA and the Black Knights turn on Lelouch on account of Schneizel, causing him to finally hit the DespairEventHorizon.]]
* HeroWithBadPublicity: Fights the good fight, even if via some questionable methods, and has to put up with bad Britannia press for it.
* HiddenDepths: Well, InUniverse anyway, since only a few people know he's actually an exiled Prince of Britannia, or that he's Zero, or that he's not [[spoiler:evil]].
* HiddenEyes: Lelouch is shown with his bangs obscuring his eyes at the funeral for his friend Shirley's father - because he's responsible for Mr. Fenette's death, however unintentionally.
* HighCollarOfDoom: Zero's costume has a has quite the dramatic collar, which would be an early sign this isn't going to be a sinless hero, if Lelouch hadn't already made that perfectly clear.
* HonorBeforeReason: Though Suzaku is helpful to Lelouch on some occasions, Lelouch should have listened to Diethard's suggestion to assassinate Suzaku...
* HopeBringer: Before Zero, there was no way the Japanese LaResistance could win against Britannia, being too divided and weak to fight off the armies. Once Lelouch stepped in, he quickly shaped them up and turned them into an effect threat. There would have been ''nothing'' without Zero, something which is hammered home when during the Black Rebellion, Lelouch leaves [[spoiler: to try to rescue Nunnally]] and they immediately fall apart. In ''R2'', Lelouch on his return sets up for bringing all the countries and people still free from Britannia against it and is ''successful'' too. Then he goes and ''[[InvokedTrope invokes]]'' it at the end [[spoiler: by having himself as the evil tyrant taken down by Suzaku as Zero once all other options for him being defeated had been crushed.]]
* HorribleJudgeOfCharacter: In the schematic of the Black Knights' ability scores, he considers Tamaki to be the least loyal member of the group (tied with Chiba). [[spoiler:When the Black Knights are convinced to mutiny against him, Tamaki is actually one of the last holdouts who remains loyal to Lelouch, and it takes nothing less than direct evidence that Lelouch slaughtered hundreds of innocent Japanese civilians to prevent a peaceful resolution with Britannia to convince him to turn traitor.]] Outside of this particular incident he [[AvertedTrope averts]] this, being a very good judge of character and using that repeatedly in his BatmanGambit based plans.
* HouseHusband: Has all the trappings of it, being a good cook, can sew, and can definitely keep house, in part thanks to having spent the last eight years caring for his DelicateAndSickly sister. This contrasts him with C.C. who is a complete slob who eats pizza every day.
* HowDoIShotWeb: When he first gains his Geass power, he automatically understands the basics, namely that it allows him to give commands that cannot be refused. However, he discovers the hard way that his power has limitations, like requiring direct eye contact, and only working once on a particular person. After the first time this causes a problem for him, [[TheSmartGuy he uses a logical and scientific method to test his powers]] and determine obscure details like maximum range and duration of effect. However, [[spoiler:he also finds out the hard way [[PowerIncontinence when his Geass become permanently active]].]] Which sucks.
* HypocrisyNod: Lelouch openly tells Suzaku that he doesn't have time to debate who's the bigger hypocrite of the two.

[[folder:I-M]]
* IDidWhatIHadToDo: Lelouch whilst squaring off with [[spoiler:his father. Followed up by "Everybody lies to survive! No one is blameless!"]]
* IdiotBall: Has a tendency to make ill-considered decisions when a loved one - particularly Nunnally - is in danger. Considering his history and past trauma, it's hard to blame him for slipping when his emotional wounds are cut open again.
* IdleRich: He presents himself this way in his non-Zero persona. If he's just some lazy rich guy, people are less likely to suspect him of being Zero.
* ILetGwenStacyDie: The death of [[spoiler:Shirley]] marks the beginning of the end of Lelouch's sanity, and is one of the leading causes of the events for the rest of the series, including [[spoiler:the [[ThanatosGambit Zero Requiem]]]]. In the compilation movies, [[spoiler:Shirley actually [[SparedByTheAdaptation survives]], and helps aid in Lelouch's resurrection]].
* ImpossiblyCoolClothes: [[TheDandy As a civilian]], and also [[LargeHam as Zero]]. Zero's helmet-mask is particularly cool and equally impossible. The mask itself has a retractable, telescoping back, as well as a slot that slides down just-so to allow Lelouch to use his Geass without removing his mask. The cape appears to be made out a a material that allows it to be folded and flapped to the precise extent necessary to make him look as cool as possible.
* ImprobableAge: How many seventeen-year-old paramilitary masterminds do ''you'' know? While ''Code Geass'' has many examples of this trope, Lelouch is among its most extreme.
* IncestSubtext: Toward Euphemia (of whom he says, "You may have been the first girl I ever loved"), and even more toward Nunnally (his "reason for living"). His love for them is not sexual but it certainly seems a tad romantic.
* IndifferentBeauty: Lelouch's views on his [[RavenHairIvorySkin looks]] range from ignoring it (he's got more important things to do) to cursing it as way too many girls chase after him thanks to Milly's antics. [[ItMakesSenseInContext Or when Sayoko gets him 108 dates.]]
* InSeriesNickname: Shirley nicknamed him "Lulu".
* IntelligenceEqualsIsolation: [[TheSocialExpert No, really.]] Lelouch seems to be very popular at school because of his good lucks and relatively easygoing nature, and is also admired by basically every Black Knight [[spoiler:for a time]] but he doesn't really appear to be close to ''anyone'' save for a handful, [[spoiler:and even then, most of that handful betrays him by the end of the show]]. Justified, however, because he's undercover all the time, what with his [[FallenPrincess two]] [[WellIntentionedExtremist secret identities.]]
* InTouchWithHisFeminineSide: Justified in that he had had to take care of Nunnally by himself since he was 10. That said, he's implied to enjoy cooking and other housework.
* IrrevocableOrder: Every order Lelouch gives through his Geass must be followed if the subject is able, and, since ItOnlyWorksOnce per person, cannot be taken back. This bites him in the ass when [[spoiler:PowerIncontinence combines with a really unfunny joke on Euphemia, a person who is actually able to "kill all the Japanese"]].
* ItGetsEasier: In the beginning, [[StressVomit Lelouch vomits after thinking of how he killed his half brother Clovis]]. As his hands get dirtier, it gets easier for him to kill more people. However, Lelouch showed no issues with killing faceless mooks. And in a subversion, he suffers a major breakdown when he kills [[spoiler:Euphemia]], and then proceeds to never kill another sibling, regardless of how deserving they may be.
* ItOnlyWorksOnce: His Geass can only give a specific person one command and they will be immune to it [[spoiler: unless someone with a Geass Canceller removes the original command.]] He could simply order the person to obey him forever, but he tries to avoid such gross misuse of people's wills.
* ItsAllAboutMe: Played with - while he certainly is arrogant, and seeks revenge against Britannia for the death of his mother, and all the suffering he and his sister have been through. But he puts the priorities of others ahead of his, and he's deeply protective of the ones he loves (especially Nunnally). He basically started a new World War for a combination of revenge and his sister's sake rather than a more noble reason like liberating the Japanese. He abandoned the Black Knights during the final battle of their rebellion in R1 to make sure his sister was okay, causing them to lose. And when he finds out [[spoiler:that she's Japan's new Viceroy]], Lelouch pretty much calls it quits on leading the Black Knights. He does snap out of it, though.
* ItsAllMyFault: Develops this attitude as time goes by, and to this effect, gives Suzaku this as a SarcasticConfession concerning Euphemia, Shirley and other things. [[spoiler: This confession is recorded, and presented to the Black Knights in order to get them to betray him.]]
* ItsNotYouItsMyEnemies: With Kallen, when he lies to her calling her a pawn in the warehouse before whispering to her he has to live on, breaking the mask for his (planned) last words.
* ItsPersonal: Personally vows to get {{Revenge}} on Suzaku (for [[EtTuBrute selling him out]]) and Charles (for [[BrainwashedAndCrazy Geassing him]] ''twice'' and putting him through [[HumiliationConga the humiliation he experienced]] during the events of ''Akito the Exiled'').
** It becomes even more so with Suzaku for a while in the second half of ''R2'' [[spoiler: when Lelouch thinks the latter sold him out ''again'']]. In Suzaku's defense though, [[spoiler:he had been followed by Schneizel's forces the whole time, but Lelouch is having none of it later when they met again in the Tokyo Settlement]].
* IWasJustJoking:
** Lelouch's denial of C.C.'s antics when Nunnally asks if C.C. is Lelouch's girlfriend.
** Also when Lelouch is cooking in episode 3 of R2.
--->'''Rivalz''': He's even got a housekeeping book.\
'''Lelouch''': How do you know!?\
'''Rivalz''': Crap, you really do?
* JackOfAllTrades: His personal Knightmare in R2, the Shinkiro, is pretty well-rounded in its abilities. While it's nowhere near as powerful as the [[SuperPrototype Lancelot or Guren]], or the personal Frames of the Knights of the Round, it's at least more capable than the mass produced models that most of the Britannians and Black Knights use. It's got good firepower with Hadron Blasters on its wrists, and a laser beam that fires from its chest (either shot into a prism to refract into many different directions, or a straightforward shot directly at what's in front), incredible defense with barriers that can be precisely placed onto any oncoming attack, and even good mobility as it can transform into a more compact jet mode for more speed.
* JeanneDArchetype: RareMaleExample in Zero. Lelouch as Zero is TheStrategist and a symbol of the rebellion and resistance against Britannia in Japan and eventually the whole world. He even acknowledges the fact Zero is a "symbol" himself. Like the actual Joan, he's not much of a fighter - at least until he gets his AceCustom that lets him fight using his own personal strengths - and requires others to fight for him but makes up for it by going directly into battle himself and making it very clear he's willing to take risks the same as his soldiers. [[spoiler: This aspect of Zero is taken advantage of when he pulls off the Zero Requiem; which also involves a dark twist on the martyrdom as Lelouch sacrifices himself as a "demon" so the world will seek peace and unite together.]]
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Lelouch is absolutely ruthless in his tactics and more than willing to become a monster if the situation calls for it. Make no mistake, he has more love for his fellow man than almost anyone else. [[BreakTheCutie No matter how often the world tries to make him forget that part]].
* JumpedAtTheCall: He needs all of zero convincing to accept C.C.'s contract and ignite his rebellion with his declaration of the [[LaResistance Order of the Black Knights]]. As he says, he was planning to rebel ''without'' the geas.
* JumpingOffTheSlipperySlope: He takes a flying leap off it in episode fourteen of ''[[OddlyNamedSequel R2]]''.
* KansasCityShuffle: [[spoiler:Against Rolo. By convincing him that he only cares about his own life above all else he convinces Rolo that he can be used to draw out C.C. His true goal was convincing Rolo to join his side.]]
* KeepingTheEnemyClose: Does this to Villetta and Rolo, both of whom were sent to watch over him following the Black Rebellion, via blackmail and promise of a future, respectively. (He intends to dispose of the latter for trying to replace Nunnally; after [[spoiler:Shirley is murdered by Rolo]], he attempts to pull it off for real as payback.) To say keeping these two close to him blew up in his face would be an understatement. To elaborate, [[spoiler:Villetta betrayed his identity as Lelouch vi Britannia to Ohgi and he actually grew to care for Rolo.]]
* KickTheDog: [[spoiler:He orders the slaughter of anyone connected with the Geass cult as part of a RoaringRampageOfRevenge for his close friend Shirley's murder. Since a Geass user created by the cult killed her, his anger is somewhat justified. Whether taking it out on noncombat researchers and children is the point where it crosses into this or [[MoralEventHorizon the other trope]], or the fact those non-combatants were a part of an TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt plot, with the children raised shown to be TykeBombs with Geass powers, makes this more of a justified ShootTheDog situation is for each viewer to decide]].
* TheKingslayer: [[spoiler:Lelouch killed his father, Emperor Charles, by geassing "god" to erase the Emperor from existence.]]
* KnightOfCerebus: After [[spoiler:Shirley's death]], Lelouch's actions take the show in a far, far darker direction with shocking speed. [[spoiler:He outright massacres the Geass Order; the body count included unarmed scientists, researchers, and children (though to be fair, it's implied none of those three groups were saints; after all, the children had Geass powers and were using them with no mercy.)]]
* KnightTemplarBigBrother: He may as well be the posterboy. He only, you know, started a war for his little sister; a World War, against the greatest superpower on the planet, ''by himself''. To elaborate, someone among the Britannian royal court was responsible for the death of his mother and the crippling and blinding of his sister. Rather than attempt to discover who exactly it was, Lelouch decides to declare war on Britannia itself and kill off the rest of his family, bar one or two of his other siblings, in order to be thorough. Though, at that point, finding out who killed his mother is a secondary concern. He only started wanting revenge after they threw an army at the place he was living. Considering how many of his siblings are responsible for a few thousand counts - at a minimum - of "collateral damage", plenty of which he's seen first-hand, becoming a Knight Templar is just a side benefit.
* KubrickStare: Is fond of doing this when things are going well.
* LaResistance: Initially irked by it, due to their incompetence and ineffectiveness, but he soon decides he might as well lead it, as long as he gets a chance to avenge his mother and defeat Britannia.
* LargeAndInCharge: At the end of the first season, the leader Zero (and his partner C.C.) pilots the stolen Gawain, which is the largest Knightmare of its time, barring the Siegfried. The Gawain is so large that, even when it's kneeing, it still towers over the Lancelot. Even with later generations of Knightmares, those that are around the Gawain's height and surpass it are based on the Gawain.
* LargeHam: Fabulously so, mostly in his Zero persona. [[DeadpanSnarker C.C. naturally lampshades him using opportunities to be one on occasion]].
* LaserGuidedKarma: [[spoiler: How he views the Zero Requiem. He believes that his death is precisely the reward he deserves for everything he's done up to this time. Meanwhile, DeathSeeker Suzaku is forced to live on as atonement for ''his'' deeds.]]
* LaughingMad: Lelouch does this as well at the end of episode 17 in the first season after he learns that Suzaku, his best friend, is also the pilot of the frame that has been ruining all his plans and is therefore his enemy.
** In a rather iconic scene from Episode 23 in the first season, he does this as [[https://files.catbox.moe/57b7kp.mkv Toyko collapses in on itself]].
* TheLeader: Type one and four of The Black Knights. They're drawn to his large personality, bold vision and the fact that he can match wits with Cornelia.
** He also happens to be a [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transformational_leadership Transformational Leader]]
* LedByTheOutsider: Lelouch is not actually Japanese, and is in fact an exiled Britannian prince, but he becomes the Japanese rebels' most efficient and intelligent leader against Britannia.
* LetNoCrisisGoToWaste: When he takes advantage of the [[spoiler:Euphinator incident.]] Not that he's happy about it, it just would be ''worse'' for him to not make something good out of it.
%%* LetsGetDangerous:
* LikeAnOldMarriedCouple: With C.C., more on her side then Lelouch's but their conversations are 90% bickering and snark. Also they live together for the majority of the series, with C.C. being Lelouch's confidant.
* LightIsNotGood: [[spoiler:As the emperor, he wears a pimped-out white costume and murders his enemies by hundreds. He does this to [[GenghisGambit become a tyrant the whole world will unite against]] but still.]]
* LivingADoubleLife: Twice. As a civilian, he's living as Lelouch Lamperouge, who on the surface is just an OrdinaryHighSchoolStudent. As the mask rebel leader Lelouch, he's leading a the Order of Black Knights to fight against Britannia. His true identity is that of a former Britannian prince, Lelouch vi Britannia, a secret he keeps from the majority of the cast.
* LivingEmotionalCrutch: Is this to [[CuteAndPsycho Rolo]], which once he realizes he quickly [[ExploitedTrope exploits]] to force a HeelFaceTurn on Rolo.
* LivingWithTheVillain: Lelouch and Suzaku attend the same school, and for a while, neither of them realizes that the other is their regular opponent. Inverted in ''R2'', where [[spoiler:both of them know who the other ''really'' is, but have to pretend to have no idea]].
* LongPants: The pants and boots of his Zero costume are completely seamless.
* LoopholeAbuse:
** When Lelouch first discovers the main limitation of his Geass -- namely, that it OnlyWorksOnce -- he gets around this by drastically increasing the complexity of the orders he gives. It doesn't matter how comprehensive the order is or how many individual tasks are involved, as long as it all occurs within a single use of his Geass, it counts as one order.
** In Turn 8 of R2, when given an order of exile from Japan as Zero, he averts a crisis by having the rest of the Black Knights, along with a million other Japanese natives, dress up as Zero, and joining him in the exile, and freeing them to take their fight against Britannia to the world stage. Towards the end, [[spoiler:he stops the immortal and Geass-immune Charles from activating Ragnarok by Geassing the collective unconsciousness into carrying out its own wish to continue existence, which it carries out by obliterating both Charles and Marianne.]]
* LoveMakesYouCrazy: Though more of a case of love makes you forget how to be a good ChessMaster. While Lelouch is an excellent strategist he's only able to be at his absolute best when he acts like a jerk and is coldly calculating. Thus when Lelouch's resolve fails and he betrays his ideals and abandons the Black Knights, he does it [[spoiler:(twice) because his sister Nunnally is held hostage]].
* LuredIntoATrap: He and Kallen are lured into a warehouse by the Black Knights, who intend on [[EtTuBrute executing the former]].
* MagicalEye: The Geass. It allows him to give direct commands to anyone he makes eye contact with (which they ''must'' obey, even if the command is explicitly suicidal or goes against every moral fiber of their being), but ItOnlyWorksOnce per person.
* MagneticHero: Most obvious as Zero. He manages to get Ohgi's group to cooperate with him ''through the radio'' in Shinjuku and then with a conversation convince both Kallen and Ohgi to follow him into an impossible mission. He then ends up building an army and later ''government'' in R2 through in part his magnetism as much as his GuileHero status. However, this shows up even in civilian guise; Lelouch Lamperouge is incredibly popular at school and not just because he's a ChickMagnet. Extra materials reveal that one encounter was enough for Milly and Rivalz to want to be friends with him, while he very accidentally gained the absolute devotion of Shirley and Rolo just by being himself.
* ManchurianAgent: Lelouch does this several times with the [[MindControlEyes Geass]]. Once with [[spoiler:Sayoko, to make her play [[GambitRoulette prerecorded messages]] over the phone.]] Again with [[spoiler:Jeremiah Gottwald, so he will let Zero and his gaggle escape with Suzaku]] while destroying his career without realizing it. As well as to the Britannian special forces [[spoiler:assigned to monitor him in case he regains his memories, which he does.]] Even [[spoiler:Guilford]] gets this done to him, making him think [[spoiler:Lelouch is Cornelia.]] Justified since it's MindControl.
* ManipulativeBastard: Not as bad as you might think, considering his [[MindControl Geass]] [[ItOnlyWorksOnce only works once per victim]], but he still has his moments. The greatest example of this comes in the second season: [[spoiler:Rolo, Lelouch's fake little brother, was actually a teenage assassin charged with the task of keeping an eye on Lelouch in case he regained his old memories. When Lelouch found out, he continued treating Rolo kindly and even orchestrated a situation where Lelouch could pretend to risk his life to save Rolo, winning his trust and bringing him over to his side. This in itself wouldn't be so bad given Rolo's orders to kill Lelouch, but Lelouch, for a while at least, planned on using Rolo until he got Nunnally back before disposing of him as payback for the scheme. After Lelouch's real sister was thought to be dead and Rolo had murdered one of Lelouch's friends, he snapped and admitted to Rolo that he was just using him, actually hated him, and had tried to kill him on several occasions. Nevertheless, without being asked or influenced by Lelouch's Geass, Rolo sacrificed himself to protect Lelouch.]]
* MeaningfulName: Lelouch Lamperouge roughly translates to "suspicious red light". Specifically, the French term it derives from is 'le louche', literally "the suspicious one" - or, when taken with his surname, "the suspicious red lamp/light", as noted above (although technically, it should be "la lampe rouge louche", but we can let grammar slide here). What's even more interesting, though, is that the word "louche" derives from the Latin adjective "luscus", which means "one-eyed" - very fitting given how his Geass manifests itself [[spoiler:(initially, anyway)]].
** PunnyName: Of the FridgeBrilliance variety: he's a CelibateHero whose surname means, roughly, "red light". [[note]][[DontExplainTheJoke Red-light district]], anyone?[[/note]]
** Also, when talking about liquids, "louche" can mean "cloudy" - possibly a reference to the shades of grey in Lelouch's character (perhaps most so of any in the series, [[GreyAndGrayMorality not that the others are black and white themselves]]).
** Claude Lelouch is also a French producer.
** Also, Lelouch is phonetized as '''Ruru-shu''', which is a near inversion of Charles, phonetized as '''Sha-ruru'''!
* MemoryGambit: [[spoiler:How Lelouch defeats Mao when he is planning to blow up Ashford Academy. He tells Suzaku how to disarm the bomb, and then burst into the school chapel when he hears Lelouch screaming, then Geassed himself into forgetting using a hand mirror.]]
* MightyGlacier: Lelouch pilots the Gawain alongside C.C. near the end of the first season, a Knightmare Frame that's much larger than usual, requiring two pilots. It's a powerful mech with strong firepower, but because of its size, it can be outmaneuvered by faster, smaller Knightmare Frames like the Lancelot.
* MikeNelsonDestroyerOfWorlds: [[spoiler:Accidentally commands his beloved half-sister into ordering a massacre of the Japanese due to PowerIncontinence.]]
* MilkingTheGiantCow: His penchant for making dramatic hand gestures is such an integral part of his character that even people unfamiliar with the series itself recognize it.
* MillionairePlayboy: Downplayed, due to being a teenager, but part of his civilian identity is being a careless, wealthy layabout who spends most of his days gambling with other rich dudes.
* AMillionIsAStatistic: Played straight, subverted and averted with Lelouch.
* MindOverManners: Why he doesn't just Geass people into following all his orders.
* MissionControl: Being a strategist, he often performs this role.
* MoleInCharge: [[spoiler:As Emperor Lelouch. Despite affecting the guise of a ruthless emperor, even then he's still]]
* MomentKiller: Every moment he shares with Kallen in season 2 that serves as bringing them closer always ends up being interrupted, be it by a radio call, by someone craving tabasco or by some {{Yandere}} wannabe little brother. Subverted at the end of the anime, where Kallen ends up performing a moment killer during a Lelouch/C.C. scene with a giant robot.
* MrFanservice: To a degree. He gets his {{shower|scene}} and ShirtlessScene.
* MultilayerFacade: It's sometimes easy to forget that he actually has ''two'' assumed identities: Zero the RebelLeader, and Lelouch Lamperouge the OrdinaryHighSchoolStudent.
* MyCountryTisOfTheeThatISting: {{Justified|Trope}}. Lelouch vi Britannia hates Britannia for what it did: used him as a political pawn, invaded Japan among other countries with him still in it, and has been responsible for occupying most of the world and taking away the rights of other nations. He's made it his goal in life to completely overthrow Britannia's government and see the empire either reformed or utterly annihilated.
* MyDeathIsJustTheBeginning: [[spoiler: His "Zero Requiem" plan at the end of season 2 was an extended scheme to make himself TheScapegoat of all Britannia's evils, while also covertly dismantling its corrupt elements, before having himself killed so Nunnally and her allies could rule the nation with a clean slate.]]
* MyHeroZero: "Zero" is the name he chooses for his alter-ego as leader of the Black Knights. He returns to the theme a lot, calling his PraetorianGuard the Zero Unit and eventually [[spoiler: naming Suzaku his "Knight of Zero" when he is crowned emperor.]]
* MySisterIsOffLimits: Unless you're Suzaku ''don't even think about'' approaching Nunnaly with anything less than polite and harmless interaction. Suzaku, in contrast, is Lelouch's ideal choice of husband for Nunnaly, because he wouldn't trust his little sister with anyone except his best friend.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:N-R]]
* NeatFreak: Extra materials show Lelouch is this, from getting annoyed at C.C. moving a chair a few inches off to being picky about his cooking (you have to measure things to ''exact decimal point''!). This likely is rooted in the same issues that make him a ControlFreak.
* NecessarilyEvil: Invoked during a discussion with [[HonorBeforeReason Guilford]]. His final plan, and the actions he takes to carry it out, is either this or DesignatedEvil.
* NeverHurtAnInnocent: Sort of, since he doesn't kill innocent civilians. However, they are still in danger of getting killed if they are accidentally caught in a crossfire.
* NeverMyFault: After he badly underestimates an opponent to the point where he would have been beaten if C.C. hadn't saved him, he blames his subordinates for not following his orders and for his forces being so heavily at a disadvantage. (While both of these facts are true, Lelouch knew they were a bunch of untrained freedom fighters rather than a professional army, so he should have expected this to happen, but went anyway.) C.C. just laughs at Lelouch, and points out that a good commander would make sure the battlefield was set to his advantage before starting. To his credit, Lelouch takes this advice very much to heart, and never lets himself get outmaneuvered to that extent again. Later on in the series, [[ItsAllMyFault he shifts to the opposite side of the self-blame spectrum.]]
* NightmareOfNormality: The second season starts with Lelouch having forgotten all about his true identity as an exiled prince, Zero and even his memories of his sister Nunnally were erased, replacing her with Rolo. He remembers everything when C.C. kisses him.
* NobleFugitive: To an extent. He's an exile from his homeland in Japan after having originally been sent there effectively as a political hostage who was then lost in the confusion of the following invasion.
* NobleMaleRoguishMale: When they first met during their childhood, Lelouch really was the nobld one, while Suzaku was the ruffian. It was the subsequent occupation of Japan by Britannia that supposedly inverted things, with Lelouch becoming more vengeful and embittered, and Suzaku, [[spoiler:who was responsible for killing Genbu but never being punished for it]], feeling guilty and wanting to atone, started attempting to be even more mild-mannered and chivalrous. Though of course, cracks in their respective facades would show throughout the series.
* NominalHero: Another way to view him in [=R1=], along with AntiHero, and AntiVillain referenced above. Despite a sympathetic backstory, and that the government he rebels against is a brutal Darwinian Empire bent on conquest, he's fighting for selfish reasons rather than noble ones, and at his worst he uses lies, deceit, manipulation, and murder to get what he wants. [[spoiler: This all-for-one mentality results in his defeat and capture at the end of the season due to not having built up enough faith in his subordinates to be able to successfully carry out a battle strategy without him]].
* NonActionGuy: PlayedWith. He's a genius ChessMaster, but so [[SquishyWizard horribly unfit]] he has been easily outrun by girls wearing mascot costumes and also fancy dresses with petticoats and high heels. He's routinely [[CurbstompBattle curbstombed]] in mecha battle. It's even lampshaded symbolically with the show's chess theme, where Lelouch plays the part of the king, simultaneously the most important piece and the slowest moving. Yet despite all this, he's ''anything'' but cowardly or harmless: On his own, he has managed to easily infiltrate and take control of several aerial battleships, and from the very first episode he killed large groups of hostile soldiers with ease. Even without his Geass he is shown to be very competent with a gun and can score [[BoomHeadshot headshots]] if his targets aren't endowed with CharlesAtlasSuperpower, and in the second episode he doesn't even flinch when Villetta is firing her ''[[MiniMecha knightmare]]-mounted'' machine gun at him. Essentially, badass NonActionGuy.
* NoPlaceForMeThere: [[spoiler:He dies to finish Zero Requiem and bring about world peace. Though it's more like he did it mostly as a SuicideByCop, considering there were other ways to bring about peace as he noted.]]
* NoSocialSkills: Despite being TheStrategist and TheSocialExpert, Lelouch tends to flounder in social situations (to the point Shirley asking him out on a date confused him). He also can be weirdly dramatic about the strangest things. This is more evident in early R1 and R2 where Ashford gets more attention (see the Cat Hunt in R1.06 and the chase scene in R2.05 or pretty much all of "Cupid Day") and in extras such as the Picture Dramas and Audio Dramas. It gets more attention in LighterAndSofter AlternateUniverse spin-offs like ''Private Tutor'' which shows off his more awkward side more often.
* NothingCanStopUsNow: Whenever he says, "All tasks at hand have been cleared," something's bound to go terribly wrong in a way that the poor guy couldn't have possibly expected. Borders on CosmicPlaything at times.
* NotWhatItLooksLike: Usually with [[BodyguardCrush Kallen]]. Usually witnessed by a [[ClingyJealousGirl fretful]] Shirley. Similarly -- as Zero -- with C.C., witnessed by a fretful Kallen.
* OminousOperaCape: As Zero; it certainly adds a certain "flair" to his performances and does look cool.
* OrdinaryHighSchoolStudent: The preferred mask Lelouch wears when not wearing his preferred mask.
* OutGambitted: Does this to enemies a few times and it happens to him too.
* PaperThinDisguise: A {{downplayed|Trope}} case, but still notable nonetheless. His civilian identity as "Lelouch Lamperouge" is rather barebones in terms of disguise. He still ''looks'' like a grown up version of the former prince, and kept the same first name despite how uncommon it is. The only real aspect stopping people from immediately connecting the dots is the idea that the exiled prince died during the invasion. Even Jeremiah, someone who served as a member of Marianne's Royal Guard and knew Lelouch and Nunnally when they were at the Aries Villa, even if only tangentially, doesn't recognize that Lelouch is the same person as his Prince until Lelouch flat out tells him. The closest anyone comes to finding out on their own is Anya, largely due to having a picture of a young Lelouch on her phone and noting the resemblance, [[spoiler:though that is handled via Marianne screwing with her memories.]]
* ParanoiaGambit: In saving Suzaku from being executed as a patsy for Clovis' murder, Lelouch geasses Jeremiah Gottwald into helping them escape, while calling him "Orange" in a familiar tone. The plan has the effect of putting Jerimiah under suspicion of colluding with terrorists -- which gets him demoted to private and striped of his noble title -- as well as discrediting the Purist faction and eliminating any suspicion against Suzaku.
* ParentalIssues: While almost everyone on the show has these, his prove more lethal than most.
* PayEvilUntoEvil: Lelouch is more than willing to commit acts that might be considered evil to destroy the greater evils of the world, such as using terroism via the Black Knights to defeat Britannia and learn who murdered his mother. Deconstructed though; his actions serve to harm him and those around him.
* PersonalityPowers: He is a charismatic demagogue and his Geass manifests as the power to control others.
* PinocchioNose: Looks away when lying. One that Suzaku is quite familiar with, enough to know Lelouch is lying about Geassing Euphie on purpose.
* ThePlan: Lelouch REALLY gets around here and the {{Gambit Index}}es. Just count all his Gambit-centric entries...
* PowerAtAPrice: Code Geass can be consider a cautionary of what happens when just one person is given power over everyone else.especially when the person in question is too young and inexperienced to understand the consequences of the choices he makes. Lulouch tried to change the world for his sister's benefit and eventually for the world using his Geass despite the awful cost.[[spoiler: he is partially successful.]]
* PoweredArmor: In ''[[Manga/CodeGeassNightmareOfNunnally Nightmare of Nunnally]]'', sort of (it's complicated). Zero can fight Knightmares hand to hand.
* PowerIncontinence: All geass users inevitably lose control of their geass by having it switch to "permanently active". His turn hits him at ''exactly'' the worst possible second.
* ThePowerOfLove: Learns it from Shirley and understands he's been driven by it from the very beginning in a very funny way.
* PrettyBoy: He's noted to be ''very'' attractive by various people.
* {{Pride}}: this, along with hubris is Lulouch's fatal character flaw, many times bad things happen to him because of it, yet he never really learns from it and can be notoriously careless. Episode 22 of R1 is where his aforementioned character flaw, finally fuck him over.
* PrideBeforeAFall: [[spoiler: this has dire consequences for him, first he loses to his sister Cornelia because he underestimates her, and worse near the end of season one, he unwittingly causes a horrible accident due to his pride and hubris which has terrible ramifications for everyone, the result: his rebellion ends in total failure.]]
* ProdigalHero: An exiled Prince who comes back to destroy his ArchnemesisDad's empire.
* PromotionToParent: After their mother was murdered and their father abandoned them, Lelouch became Nunnally's primary caretaker.
* ProtagonistJourneyToVillain: He starts off an extreme AntiHero, albeit one with understandable goals and a willingness to refrain from doing anything too atrocious. One TraumaCongaLine later, by the end of the series, [[spoiler:he deliberately sets himself up as the worst tyrant in history, killing and oppressing millions if not billions of people, in order to carry out a ZeroApprovalGambit of questionable necessity and effectiveness.]]
* PsychicAssistedSuicide: Lelouch uses his Geass to do this at ''least'' four times. The first of which is at the end of the very first episode:
--> '''Lelouch''': ''Lelouch Vi Britannai commands you: Die!"\
'''Mook''': Happily Your Highness! ''[shoots himself]''
* PsychoticSmirk: Borders on SlasherSmile sometimes, but whenever he's just wiped out an enemy force or thwarted one of their plans, Lelouch's typical alternating scowl/smug expression goes off into an awesomely evil smile. Often preceded or followed by an equally [[LargeHam entertaining]] EvilLaugh.
* PublicExecution: A form of this trope. When Lelouch [[spoiler:becomes Emperor, some of the remaining Knights of the Round come to assassinate him. When Suzaku goes to battle the Knights - and completely kicks their ass - Lelouch mentions that the battle is being broadcast to the world. It was obviously meant as a showcase of Lelouch and Suzaku's power.]]
* PurpleIsTheNewBlack: As Zero, his suit contains just as much purple as it does black.
* RankScalesWithAsskicking: Averted. Zero is only a master tactician, not an AcePilot. When Kallen asks him why he is giving her the Guren Nishiki instead of claiming it himself, he tells her that she is the best pilot, thus she would get the best Knightmare they have. This also extends to Tohdoh and the Four Holy Swords, providing them with the Knightmares with the best combat properties next to Kallen's Guren, while Zero has no issue using inferior models himself.
* RavenHairIvorySkin: Lelouch has black hair and fair skin and is pretty enough to have a ''lot'' of girls leaping at the chance for a kiss and end up with [[ItMakesSenseInContext 108 dates thanks to Sayoko.]]
* ReallyDeadMontage: [[spoiler:Received one of the longest death scenes in anime history at the end of season 2.]]
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: As Zero he does his best to act as this. He's willing to hear out his forces and give people chances, even [[TheFool Tamaki]]. However, his SecretIdentity and other suspicious acts due to keeping secrets [[spoiler: lead the Black Knights to being convinced by Schneizel he's anything but.]]
* RebelPrince: Eleventh Prince of the Britannian Empire, who eventually becomes a terrorist / freedom fighter to destroy it and kill his SocialDarwinist father.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: When he uses his Geass, glowing red bird patterns appear in his eyes. Otherwise he has purple eyes.
* RedOniBlueOni: Evoked a few times, with a few different characters:
** Mao (red) and Lelouch (blue)
** Lelouch (red) and C.C. (blue)
** Suzaku (red) and Lelouch (blue)
** Lelouch (red) and Schneizel (blue)
* RedRightHand: [[spoiler:His left eye, after his Geass power goes out of control while talking to Euphemia]].
* RhetoricalRequestBlunder: [[spoiler:Causes a DiabolusExMachina at the end of season 1 trying to rhetorically illustrate the absolute power of his Geass orders to Euphemia by saying he could even force her to kill all Japanese people despite her own feelings on them, without realizing his Geass powers had become permanently active from overuse shortly before.]]
* RichesToRags: He was a royal prince of Britannia before being disowned into poverty by his abusive father.
* RoyalBlood: He is the prince of the Britannian Empire and fights his ArchnemesisDad. [[spoiler:After the Black Knights turn on him, he gets himself a replacement army by becoming the emperor.]]
* RuleOfSymbolism: Zero, as the Black King, is the opponent of Suzaku the White Knight, Schneizel the White King and [[spoiler:Nunnally the White Queen]] with Kallen as the Black Queen and the Black Knight. [[spoiler: During Zero Requiem, Lelouch officially hijacked Schneizel's place as the White King, who was finally killed at the hands of the Black King, Zero.]]

[[folder:S-U]]
* SanitySlippage: This started [[spoiler:when he accidentally Geassed Princess Euphemia into genocide and has to [[MercyKill put her out of her misery]], went FromBadToWorse when Shirley dies and crossed the DespairEventHorizon with Nunnally's apparent demise in the FLEIJA blast, the betrayal of the Black Knights, and Rolo's death. Eventually leads to him [[TakingYouWithMe attempting to seal himself with his father inside the Sword of Akasha]], [[TheCaligula his role as Emperor]], and finally, [[GenghisGambit committing]] [[ThanatosGambit the Zero Requiem]]]].
* SarcasticConfession: Gave one to Suzaku at the Kururugi Shrine when Suzaku interrogates him about everything he did as Zero, and Schneizel manipulated it to convince the Black Knights to betray Zero.
* SavvyGuyEnergeticGirl: Lelouch with nearly any girl he can be paired with, due to his SquishyWizard nature. Only Nunnally, C.C. [[spoiler:not under amnesia]], and maybe Sayoko don't fall under this.
* TheScapegoat: [[spoiler:Lelouch ends up one of these when the Black Knights betray him on account of several half-truths from Schneizel. He later runs with this and makes himself the scapegoat for everything wrong in the world for the Zero Requiem to work.]]
* ScheherezadeGambit: [[spoiler:Used effectively against Rolo which is part KansasCityShuffle. Too bad, Lelouch actually grew to care about him in the end]].
* ScreamsLikeALittleGirl: Heck, even he had a tendency to scream in a high-pitched [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uakySqfaxLY voice]].
* SelfMadeOrphan: [[spoiler: After finding out what ''both'' of his parents truly believed in. Yes, after spending 90% of the series trying to find out who killed his mother to avenge her, he winds up doing it himself.]]
* SelfSacrificeScheme: [[spoiler: The Zero Requiem allows him to sacrifice both his life and his reputation for lasting peace. From what we see, it appears to have worked.]]
* SheIsNotMyGirlfriend: About C.C. when Nunnally mistakes her for his girlfriend; ironically subverted with Kallen when he teases her about what their hidden relationship might look like to the black Knights.
* ShieldSurf: During his duel with Guilford, he used a riot shield to escape after Geassed staff collapse the area and free the captive Black Knights.
* ShipperWithAnAgenda: In R1, he wanted to hook up Suzaku/Nunnally, due to trusting Suzaku with Nunnally and hoping he will be able to protect her while Lelouch is off as Zero, not to mention on Nunnally's side he believed she would be able to give DeathSeeker Suzaku a "reason to live". This fell apart when he found out Suzaku is the pilot of the Lancelot and got together with Euphemia. [[spoiler: However, at the very end of the series, Lelouch technically got what he wanted; as Zero, Suzaku is always with Nunnally to protect her and caring for Nunnally becomes a major part of his life, helping him stay alive.]]
* ShipTease: He's got this with at least three possible love interests: Kallen, Shirley, and C.C.
** In the first season, he's sometimes put in NotWhatItLooksLike scenarios with Kallen, and has walked in on her taking a shower early on. Kallen isn't impressed with Lelouch Lamperouge's arrogance, but loves Zero-- [[LovesMyAlterEgo something she struggles with in R2]]. In R2, Lelouch teases Kallen for wearing a bunny suit at the beginning (while then providing her his shirt to cover up), have a moment where she accidentally falls on top of him, and she even kisses him during one of the show's final episodes.
** Shirley adores Lelouch Lamperouge, and it's at least reciprocated on his end to some extent, just that he can't do much about it [[ItsNotYouItsMyEnemies given that he's Zero]]. He comforts her over [[spoiler:her father's death]], goes on a date with her in R2 [[spoiler:even if it's mainly to throw the [=OSI=] off his trail]], and does actually gets a sweet moment with her during the school festival in R2. [[spoiler:This of course, makes it all the more tragic when she ends up dead at the hands of Rolo, and it utterly breaks Lelouch's sanity]]. In the compilation movies, [[spoiler:she is actually SparedByTheAdaptation, and helps retrieve his body to be resurrected]].
** C.C. lives with Lelouch and tend to bicker LikeAnOldMarriedCouple, and it's even implied they share the bed (despite C.C. even teasing him that a gentleman would sleep on the floor). While at first their partnership is just because of their contract, the two do actually grow to care for one another. After the battle of Narita, having saved Lelouch from Suzaku's Lancelot but getting injured in the process, Lelouch patches up her wounds and shares a very tender scene with her. He learns her true name, and when C.C. earlier mused upon why snow is white, saying that it's forgotten what colour it's supposed to be, Lelouch responds in kind saying that he may not know why snow is white, but he turns to her and says that snow is beautiful. C.C.'s also kissed him at least a few times, even if one time was to help jog his memory, and despite all the hardships that Lelouch goes through, she is his closest accomplice and ally. In ''Resurrection'', [[spoiler:Lelouch even casts aside his own name and calls himself L.L, styled after C.C.'s own name, and spends the rest of his life with her]].
* ShroudedInMyth: People thought Zero was a woman, Prince Clovis or a prince of another country.
* ShutUpHannibal: Twice.
** First, in season one, after Mao most unpleasantly discloses that Suzaku [[spoiler:was responsible for the death of his father, Prime Minister Genbu Kururugi, in order to put an end to the war between Japan and Britannia]] and then [[KickThemWhileTheyAreDown precedes to berate]] [[HeroicBSOD Lelouch's thoroughly traumatized friend]], Lelouch has clearly had enough, and commands him via Geass to never speak again.
** The second time is in R2, when confronted with Charles' [[spoiler:and Marianne]]'s AssimilationPlot with the Ragnarok Connection and the revelation that [[spoiler:their abandonment of Lelouch and Nunnally in Japan was a BatmanGambit meant to protect them]], [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2sSAD4FFpPw Lelouch rebuts]] and banishes Charles [[spoiler:along with Marianne]] to C's World with the assistance of the collective unconsciousness.
* SilentScapegoat: [[spoiler: The Zero Requiem required Lelouch to be scapegoated for all of the atrocities caused by Britannia so that his death would unify the world and facilitate the peace process.]]
* SlaveMooks: [[spoiler:In the final arc, he geasses an entire army into following his orders.]]
* SlouchOfVillainy: He does these in the ''cockpit'' of whatever Knightmare he's riding in. Subverted in that he's not actually a villain.
* TheSmartGuy: While ''Anime/CodeGeass'' has almost as many {{TV Genius}}es as it has idiots, Lelouch ''still'' stands out as among the very smartest.
* SmartPeoplePlayChess: Lelouch is introduced by having him win an unwinnable chess game. He's the second smartest person in the entire world of the series.
* TheSocialExpert: He's '''very''' good at manipulating people thanks to this. He's so good at plotting people's reactions that he's able to deftly manipulate people with voice and video recordings.
* SoProudOfYou: [[spoiler: In the final, he says this to Nunnally while she's under his Geass, acknowledging how she has grown from the helpless DelicateAndSickly girl she was in the beginning. He only doesn't say it to her face properly because he's currently playing the EvilOverlord for his ThanatosGambit and can't break character.]]
* SpannerInTheWorks: Lelouch's affection for his friends has scuttled his plans almost as many times as Suzaku has. He also tends to be this incarnate to others plans [[spoiler: particularly his parents' AssimilationPlot.]]
* SparedByTheAdaptation: [[spoiler:In ''Suzaku of the Counterattack'', ''Nightmare of Nunnally'', and ''Anime/CodeGeassLelouchOfTheResurrection'', he lives, unlike in the main continuity.]]
* SquishyWizard: In physical strength, speed, endurance, and coordination, he's not ''remotely'' in the league with Kallen, Cornelia, or most of his other allies and adversaries -- much less Suzaku, whose CharlesAtlasSuperpower allows him to dodge machine-gun bullets. Even ''Euphie'' can outrun him on foot. He manages to power through when it counts, though.
* StarCrossedLovers: With just about every LoveInterest he has. [[BrotherSisterIncest Euphemia]] in season 1 is less obvious considering she loves Suzaku way more, but there's clearly this dynamic with [[spoiler:Shirley in season 2 ( dies in his arms), and then with Kallen (ends up on the opposite side from him)]].
** In the compilation movies, [[spoiler:this is even more apparent with Shirley, who is SparedByTheAdaptation, but he still cuts off any prospect [[ItsNotYouItsMyEnemies for her safety]].]]
* StopOrIShootMyself: Does this in response to C. C. pointing her gun at him to prevent him from going anywhere. He points his own gun at himself, at his head instead of somewhere else like she was doing.
* TheStrategist: Through unorthodox tactics and Geass, Lelouch was the only reason the resistance groups in Japan became a consolidated force that could oppose and regularly defeated Britannia's forces.
* StrawHypocrite: He starts out using and manipulating [[LaResistance the Japanese liberation]] cause as a cover for his own personal revenge, only to later on [[BecomingTheMask embrace it for real]].
* StrongFamilyResemblance: Lelouch is a male version of his mother. Down to the skin complexion, hair color, eye color, and eye shape. This actually results in various siblings of his to ''immediately'' recognize him as Lelouch vi Britannia once they see his face.
* StrongGirlSmartGuy: Smart Guy to Kallen's Strong girl. Lelouch is physically underwhelming having poor physical strength, speed, endurance and coordination. He is unable to run very fast or for very long and is easily exhausted performing manual labor even taking remedial P.E. He instead focuses more on cerebral activities, spending most of his time in the Black Knights strategizing and directing with highly effective tactics. Kallen is a fierce resistance fighter on par with Knights of the Round and is the Ace of the Black Knight, while she has good grades despite never being in school she is shown to be easily manipulated, especially by Lelouch.
* StudentCouncilPresident: Well, ''Vice'' President.
* SuperPrototype: Zero steals the Gawain from Schneizel before it was completed. Since it's just a prototype, Schneizel doesn't care. Rakshata eventually completes the Gawain and improves the Hadron Cannon, turning the Knightmare into a terrifying, flying mook killer. However, despite its durability, extraordinary firepower, Float System and Slash Harken fingers, it's still slow to maneuver and it is not suitable in direct one-on-one combat against skilled pilots. Its successors various, the mass-produced Gareths and AceCustom Galahad lack the weaknesses the Gawain had, and the Shinkirou was designed to fit Lelouch's strength as a pilot and tactician.
* SuperheroesWearCapes: As part of his hero identity is to wear a cape, which he likes to flourish when he's make a speech. He's invoking the trope.
* SupremeChef: He is one out of necessity of having had to take care of Nunnally for years...and because he's such a NeatFreak that only he is capable of measuring and handling every single ingredient in exactly the way he needs and wants.
* SureLetsGoWithThat: The other Black Knights assume that C.C.'s his mistress, and he doesn't bother to correct them. It's easier than trying to explain who she really is.
* SympathyForTheDevil: To [[spoiler:his brother, Rolo]], even after confessing his hate for him.
* TakeAThirdOption: Lelouch tends to do this. It's practically built into his strategies!
* TakingTheBullet: He did this to save Rolo. [[spoiler:It was his ploy to get Rolo to come over to his side, he even Geassed the shooter so that he would fire according to the plan]].
* TakingYouWithMe: [[spoiler:Following the betrayal, he attempts to do this to his father by having them both sealed inside the Sword of Akasha.]]
* TallDarkAndHandsome: He has raven hair, is tall, and a total ChickMagnet.
* TallDarkAndSnarky: He also has a penchant for sarcasm.
* TheTapeKnewYouWouldSayThat:
** Three times! The first time is when he ordered Sayoko to play one on the phone to trick Kallen. The second time takes place during the incident with Mao and the last time is [[spoiler:on the Damocles.]]
** A pretty realistic version of this trope, actually; upon inspection, Lelouch's recorded tapes aren't perfect, as he interrupts his opponents a lot and sometimes will lapse into long monologues. Obviously, in real life, it would be near impossible to accurately predict what the other party is going to say. The tapes were always meant as distractions to buy him time, anyways.
* TemptingFate: A constant recurring element is that something unexpected will always show up to rob Lelouch of a straightforward victory in the exact moment he decides to stop and gloat about it. This happens as early as his very first outing as Zero, as Suzaku in the Lancelot shows up to absolutely destroy Lelouch's troops as soon as he starts laughing about how pathetic Clovis' resistance has been.
* ThanatosGambit: [[spoiler:He arranges his own public assassination in the hopes that it will inspire nothing less than world peace.]]
* ThirdPersonPerson: "[[CatchPhrase Lelouch vi Britannia commands you...]]"
* TokenEnemyMinority: He's Britannian, specifically of RoyalBlood, and he ''leads'' [[LaResistance The Black Knights]] that are trying to overthrow Britannia and liberate Japan. For most of the series, the only other full-blooded Britannian member was Diethard.
* TooCleverByHalf: A brilliant strategist and turns out to be a gifted leader, but the higher he aims, the more he is prone to his goals going horribly wrong. By the end of the series, his paranoia and strategic cornering has led to the destruction of [[spoiler:Tokyo, nearly killed his sister, and turned his army into the praetorian guard of a city-razing sociopath]]. Luckily, he realizes this trope and intentionally sabotages his ultimate victory to ensure that he doesn't screw things up after taking over the world.
* TookALevelInCynic: Everything that happened from the murder of his mother to the invasion of Japan when he was present there, all by the age of 10. Little wonder he became so bitter.
* TragicHero: Depending on perspective, he can be this or TragicVillain. Possibly both at the same time.
* TraumaCongaLine: The writers of ''Anime/CodeGeass [[OddlyNamedSequel R2]]'' traumatize Lelouch every two episodes like '''clockwork''' from episode thirteen on -- so much so that by his fourth trauma he could not even cry when he was told that [[spoiler:he had just inadvertently gotten Nunnally killed]].
* TriggerHappy: Under enough stress, he's liable to go down some random alley and start geassing random thugs for the hell of it. It's truly a sight to behold.
* TroubledButCute: Shirley has this opinion of him and she's not entirely wrong; Lelouch fits the bill as a brooding yet caring young man with ''serious'' trauma in his backstory.
* {{Tsundere}}: Type A. He loves mocking his enemies and rivals, but is a big ''dere'' to the few he loves.(He can be a very classic Tsundere to his loved ones as well, ask Kallen and C.C..)
* {{Ubermensch}}: [[spoiler: In the final arc, he declares his faith in humanity's better nature and arranges things so that the world will choose peace as part of his Zero Requiem.]]
* TheUnfavourite: Along with Nunnally, apparently, as a side-effect of the rest of the court's disdain for their mother Marianne. [[spoiler:This is subverted when we find about the truth in episode 21 of ''R2''.]]
* TheUnfettered: Initially he did have [[BashBrothers a]] [[MindOverManners few]] [[MoralityChain fetters,]] but one by one they [[DespairEventHorizon disappear]]. After being betrayed by the Black Knights, he finally tosses his final one and begins ordering people to be his eternal slaves using his Geass.
* UnresolvedSexualTension : He and Kallen have it going on for most of the second season, with Lelouch teasing her about their relationship and them often ending up in some very intimate positions with each other. This goes to the point where Lelouch almost acts on it when he gets depressed and seeks comfort, only to receive a slap of chaos from said girl.
* UnscrupulousHero: A master at this trope, more than happy to manipulate and act dishonorably in order to achieve his goals.
* UrbanLegendLoveLife: Thanks to Sayoko setting up 108 dates with him, many of his classmates think he's a MillionairePlayboy. And before that the Black Knights ended up thinking C.C. is Zero's mistress.
* UriahGambit: [[spoiler:Tries to do this to Rolo in a battle against V.V. as payback for the murder of Shirley.]]
* UsedToBeASweetKid: Yes, Lelouch used to be a very CheerfulChild who happily loved his family. Then [[DarkAndTroubledPast shit]] happened. And happened ''again'' thanks to the war when he was just starting to, though still remaining more cynical, return to being sweet.
* UtopiaJustifiesTheMeans: Lelouch is willing to go to almost ''any'' lengths to create a perfect world for Nunnally. By the end of ''R2'', this includes [[spoiler:brainwashing numerous people, slaughtering noncombatants, deception, betrayal, self-inflicted public demonization, and assisted suicide. Though one can blame this on the events of the betrayal that led him over the DespairEventHorizon]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder:V-Z]]
* VillainousLineage: Lelouch has shown himself to be ''very'' prone to manipulating people (and letting them die) in order to get what he wants. Just like the old man he despises so much [[spoiler:and the mother he used to love and idealize]]. The major difference is that Lelouch is is aware of the nature of his acts and his self-destructiveness.
* VillainProtagonist: {{Zigzagged}}. [[spoiler:By the end. He's the lesser of two evils when compared to his half-brother's nuke the world plan and he ultimately is pretending to be pure evil and still trying to create world peace, which involves brainwashing countless soldiers to be his slaves and carrying out a global deception, along with oppressing and presumably massacring an innumerable amount of people to make himself the most hated man in history.]]
* VillainWithGoodPublicity: Invokes this as both Zero and [[spoiler: as Emperor of Britannia until he starts his ZeroApprovalGambit as part of the Zero Requiem.]]
* VisionaryVillain: Just wants to remake the world into a kinder one, that's all.
* VocalEvolution: In any media following the show's initial run, Creator/JohnnyYongBosch gives Lelouch a more raspy, almost sinister tone to his voice, fitting the cold, calculating chessmaster that he is.
* WeakButSkilled: What he lacks in physicality and strength he more than makes up for in charisma and utter verbal badassery. [[spoiler:He is badass enough to become the autocrat of the entire world.]]
* WellIntentionedExtremist: Towards the end of ''R2'' he seems to be more NecessarilyEvil.
* WeWouldHaveToldYouBut: He keeps nearly everyone else in the dark about [[spoiler:the [[ThanatosGambit Zero Requiem]]]].
* WhatMeasureIsAMook: At first he doesn't care about the soldiers that die in his rebellion, but he for a time struggles after Narita in regards to the blood he spills on the way to destroying Britannia. He ultimately decides to do it anyways, but make all he does ''worth it''.
* WhatTheHellHero:
** Happens to him a few times -- perhaps most ironically, by [[JerkAssWoobie Mao]]. [[spoiler:The most significant probably come from Nunnally, in the final arc, ]] "You've become a demon, Lelouch!"
** He also gives one to C.C. earlier in terms of her treatment of Mao, calling her out for her abandonment of him when his Geass went out of control when the least she could've done if she couldn't take care of him was to just take his Geass away from him, or at the very least, [[MercyKill put him out of his misery]] before his Geass drove him insane.
* WhenHeSmiles: Usually smirking or giving an evil grin when not using the placid smile of his civilian identity, but when he lets out his genuine smile (usually around Nunnally but over time his interactions with C.C. draw it out of him) it's utterly ''adorable''. Rolo in particular notes that smile is precious and rare, describing it as his "true smile" that Lelouch only shows to his most precious ones.
* WhiteShirtOfDeath: [[spoiler:In the very last episode, he is stabbed through the chest with a sword, just as he planned. A lot of focus is put on the blood staining his pimped-out white costume.]]
* WickedCultured: Lelouch has good taste in suits, pretty well spoken and as if one couldn't tell by now, a master at playing chess.
* WillNotTellALie: To Nunnally at least. To the point where, in ''R2'' [[spoiler:Suzaku almost catches that his memories have returned by surprising him with a phone call from Nunnally, [[BatmanGambit knowing he wouldn't pretend not to know her.]] The only reason it doesn't work is because Rolo uses his Geass to buy Lelouch enough time to tell Nunnally he loves her and he has to pretend he doesn't know her for a few seconds, which he then does. He abandons this along with [[TheUnfettered his last fetters]] during the later stages of the Zero Requiem.]]
* WillTheyOrWontThey: Taken to a ridiculous degree with Kallen when most of their interactions imply some sort of physical/emotional closeness/almost kiss. Finally subverted at episode 22 of R2.
* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds: [[spoiler:A more "good" type in the end. He enacts the Zero Requiem, a plan that ends up causing quite possibly more bloodshed than what he would have otherwise taken towards world peace, after Nunnally apparently dies and the Black Knights betray him, leading to him becoming a DeathSeeker and abandoning any moral and ethical restraints he had before]].
* WorfHadTheFlu: While Cornelia ''is'' an accomplished strategist, it's implied that part of the reason he lost against her in their first encounter was because the Yamato Alliance broke ranks after Cornelia saw through his initial plan. Their clashes at Narita and Yokosuka are similar, with the greater implication being that while Cornelia is ''better than Clovis'', Lelouch is still above her as a strategist.
* XanatosGambit: This is the end result of an adjustment: a situation where Rolo is either killed or joins his side out of 'fraternal love'. The trope's page has the details. There is also his plan to have Zero "banished" from Area Eleven with one million people, or deal grievous harm to Britannia's PR.
* XanatosSpeedChess: He quickly adjusts to any situation to reflect the changing circumstances of plans. Other times he suffers from a BSOD when his luck runs out. Again.
* {{Yandere}}: {{Downplayed|Trope}} and non-romantic example. but Lelouch's reaction to people harming those he cares for (Suzaku's "death" for example) tends to lean towards the extreme. His utterly pissed off reaction to Mao [[HeroicBSOD breaking Suzaku]] is something to behold.
* YouKilledMyFather: His hatred for the Britannian Empire comes from the fact they left his mother's murder go unpunished.
* YoungAndInCharge: As Zero, he's actually one of the ''youngest'' members of the Black Knights with only Kaguya being younger. He's still definitely in charge. Crosses with AChildShallLeadThem due to him being royalty [[spoiler: particularly when he becomes Emperor.]]
* YouWouldntShootMe: Lelouch pulls this a few times. The first, when C. C. threatens to shoot him in episode 7 to prevent him from going off and putting himself in danger, which he counters by [[StopOrIShootMyself pointing a gun at]] ''[[StopOrIShootMyself himself]]''. A few episodes later, a few the Black Knights threaten to shoot him after he strands them, along with himself, on top of Narita, prior to the incursion of Cornelia's forces, and he defies them to find anyone else cunning enough to lead them. Finally, Kallen, at the start of season 2, including walking up to her and [[TemptingFate pressing the gun to his chest]] before finally [[DefensiveFailure taking it away]]. At the same time, this is also a subversion of the trope on several levels. Kallen is his bodyguard and thus far from "helpless", and is confronting him to find out whether or not he used his Geass on her to make her [[BodyguardCrush love him]]. She's also killed many times before, and could easily kill Lelouch with or without the gun. Lelouch also doesn't intimidate her into giving him the gun; rather, he simply tells her the truth and asks [[KillMeNowOrForeverStayYourHand whether or not she believes him]].
* ZeroApprovalGambit: [[spoiler: As part of the Zero Requiem, he kidnaps the members of the [=UFN=] on a public broadcast and conquers the entire world so that he earns the world's hatred as a power hungry tyrant. When he is assassinated publicly by Suzaku as Zero, everyone is cheering for Lelouch's death except for Suzaku, Nunnally and Kallen.]]
[[/folder]]
[[folder:Tropes as Julius Kingsley]]
* BigBadDuumvirate: Is one of the main villains in ''Akito The Exiled'', sharing the spotlight with Shaing. Unfortunately, the Geass Charles placed on him started glitching out and he suffers a mental breakdown, which Shaing wastes no time in taking advantage of and promptly captures both him and Suzaku as hostages.
* BigBadWannabe: When he's first introduced, he gets all the hype one would expect a brainwashed Lelouch to get and seems to be just as dangerous (later taking total control of Euro-Britannia's leadership with minimum effort). However, once the Emperor's Geass wears off, he's reduced to a pathetic, rambling wreck and everything falls apart for him. To sum it up: he is only a threat for a single episode, never gets to face off with any of the protagonists, and spends the remaining half of the series in a prison cell with Suzaku after Shaing (the OVA's ''true'' BigBad) usurps him. His actual accomplishments aren't all that impressive either with his Ark Fleet plan ultimately doing little more than causing some brief chaos before failing completely.
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: He's imprinted with the personality of Julius Kingsley, a royal military tactician. In this case, he really is bloody crazy and evil (but severely psychologically unstable).
* DiscOneFinalBoss: His Ark Fleet plan takes up most of the conflict and he later seizes total control of Euro-Britannia's political and military leadership. Despite all that, he ends up getting taken down halfway through the series and becomes inconsequential to the story once Shaing pulls an EvilerThanThou on him.
* EyepatchOfPower: Wears a ridiculously gaudy and ostentatious eyepatch, to hide his permanently-active Geass.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: Lelouch's role as Julius Kinglsey foreshadows his descent to Emperor Lelouch and the two personas differ oppositely in reflection with the addition of having a jewel under his eye patch. Especially rejoining Britannia as a slave nearly throwing E.U. with Suzaku as the new Knight of Seven as his bodyguard into chaos and being almost choked to death by Suzaku serve some indication that the two would rejoin Britannia to commence Zero Requiem with one to become the hated enemy of the world with the latter to be his enforcer to pave way to only kill him but this time showing tears that he cared for him deeply in the end. Espcially Suzaku mentioning rescuing Nunnally is something they would achieve to do in Zero Requiem.
* HowTheMightyHaveFallen: As Julius Kingsley in the ''Akito the Exiled'' OVA. He goes from being a charismatic terrorist leader and cool AntiHero to a {{brainwashed|AndCrazy}} BigBadWannabe who spends most of his appearances either pathetically begging for water or going through some form of psychological trauma (from Emperor Charles' Geass wearing off to Suzaku choking him). By the time Lelouch got his memories back at the start ''R2'', he quickly recalled [[HumiliationConga the humiliation he got from Charles and Suzaku back then]] and [[ItsPersonal intends to make them pay for it]].
* PaperThinDisguise: As "Julius Kingsley", the only differences being his manner of dress, an eyepatch, and being a complete {{Jerkass}} on Britannia's side due to being BrainwashedAndCrazy. [[JustifiedTrope Justified]] as officially Lelouch vi Britannia is dead and Zero not only wore a mask, but is officially dead as well so no one in-universe had any reason to suspect it. [[spoiler:That said, Shin Hyuga Shaing grabs the SmartBall by realizing Julius's tactics are ''nigh identical'' to the kind of crazy Zero pulled off, and then manages to connect "Julius'" physical appearance with that of the thought dead prince.]]
* VillainousBreakdown: Suffers from a ''massive'' mental episode halfway through ''Akito The Exiled'' due to a glitchy Geass command courtesy of the Emperor. He spends the rest of the OVA in a devastatingly dazed and confused stupor as a hostage.
