''Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters'' is a 2017 post-apocalyptic Kaiju {{anime}} film based on the ''Franchise/{{Godzilla}}'' series produced by Creator/{{Toho}} and animated by [[Creator/PolygonPictures Polygon Studios]]. It is the first anime adaptation of the title character ([[Series/{{Godzilland}} or at least second]]); and the fourth Godzilla animation since ''WesternAnimation/GodzillaTheSeries'' and is written by Creator/GenUrobuchi (''Literature/FateZero'', ''Anime/PuellaMagiMadokaMagica'' and ''Anime/PsychoPass'') and co-directed by Kōbun Shizuno, the director of the ''Manga/CaseClosed'' films, with character designs by ''Franchise/FireEmblem'' and ''Videogame/NoMoreHeroes'' artist Yusuke Kozaki. The soundtrack is composed by Takayuki Hattori, who has two ''Godzilla'' films under his belt, these being ''Film/GodzillaVsSpaceGodzilla'' and ''Film/Godzilla2000''.

The film stars Creator/MamoruMiyano, Creator/KanaHanazawa, Creator/TakahiroSakurai, Creator/TomokazuSugita, Creator/DaisukeOno, Creator/JunichiSuwabe, and Creator/YukiKaji.

When Godzilla and a legion of monsters emerged towards the end of the 20th century and drove humanity off of Earth after a 50 year war, the new planet that humanity was hoping to settle on turned out to be inhospitable. A faction wanting to return to Earth and take out Godzilla, led by a young man named Haruo, ends up taking political control and engages on a mission to return to Earth and kill Godzilla... only to emerge 20,000 years later, where Earth is overgrown and Godzilla reigns supreme.

After the success of ''Film/ShinGodzilla'', Toho on their Twitter announced an anime film was in the works; it was released in Japan on November 17, 2017. To avert a NoExportForYou, Toho released the movie on Creator/{{Netflix}} on January 17th 2018, two months after the film's theatrical debut. The film is the first in a trilogy, the second, ''Anime/GodzillaCityOnTheEdgeOfBattle'', was released in May 2018. The third film, ''Anime/GodzillaThePlanetEater'', was released November 9, 2018 in Japan and was released worldwide on Netflix on January 9, 2019.

A manga adaptation was released in March 2018, which features expanded content.

!!Includes examples of:

* ActuallyADoombot: [[spoiler: Crossing over with CruelTwistEnding, it turns out the Godzilla they defeated was merely the offspring of the original, which is now several times larger and even more powerful. It also happens to be ''royally pissed off'']].
* AdaptationSpeciesChange: Godzilla Earth's origin is plant-based instead of being a prehistoric saurian.
* AdaptationalVillainy: Not only did Godzilla get depicted as a villain like Shin Godzilla, [[spoiler:but Godzilla's offspring gets this sort of treatment in contrast to original incarnations like Minilla and Godzilla Junior]].
* AdmiringTheAbomination: As Godzilla towers over the humans, [[spoiler:Metphies delivers a sinister sermon hailing it as a god of death and destruction]].
* AfterTheEnd: The film is set several thousand years after Godzilla has driven humans off the Earth in a HomeworldEvacuation and has killed the other kaiju and conquered the planet for himself. An initial estimate of 10,000 years is given before a more accurate assessment of approximately 20,000 years is provided.
* AlienInvasion:
** Invoked in a discussion between Metphies and Mulu-Elu Galu-Gu regarding their respective species' possible motives for trying to help kill Godzilla prior to Earth's evacuation. Mulu-Elu Galu-Gu posits that the Exifs intended to conquer Earth by brainwashing the humans into following their religion, and Metphies replies that the Bilusalodo would have used Mecha-Godzilla as a weapon against the humans once Godzilla was dead.
** Metphies posits to Haruo that Godzilla is an extraterrestrial entity, stating the Exifs have seen civilizations wiped out by similar kaiju and view them as divine punishment from their god.
* AllForNothing: [[spoiler:The humans spent the entire movie fighting off monsters and Godzilla at great cost to themselves, and so when they defeat Godzilla Fillius, the real one appears and effortlessly defeats them without even trying]].
* AllThereInTheManual: A timeline of the Kaiju Wars was released as early promotional material and a prequel novel ''Godzilla: Monster Apocalypse'' further elaborates on this world's history and includes many more kaiju.
* AmbiguouslyEvil: The Exifs and Bilusaludo. In a dialogue between Metphies and Mulu-Elu Galu-Gu, both seem to coyly acknowledge the other's 'hypothetical' supposition that their respective people were planning to take over the world after dealing with Godzilla, but these plans were derailed by their failure to stop the monster. After they were forced to evacuate alongside humanity, however, they've [[EnemyMine seemingly been nothing but helpful towards the humans and each other]]. [[spoiler:Metphies himself gives off this vibe since a few of his more sinister comments imply he was manipulating Haruo in order to deliver the remnants of humanity to Godzilla and prevent them from escaping what he sees as their divine punishment.]]
** Godzilla [[spoiler:Filius. Whilst it did shoot down the probe that got too close and certainly didn't hold back against the United Earth forces, unlike its genetic forerunner it only ever attacked after being provoked. When initially seeing the drop ship, it only approaches seemingly curiously. Godzilla Filius doesn't exactly have the most expressive face so figuring out what it was thinking is hard, but it could have easily shot down the vessel and Haruo's vehicle and didn't.]]
* AmbiguouslyGay: Metphies gives off this vibe regarding Haruo, since he's taking an interest in helping him and his goals and touches Haruo inappropriately at one point.
* AwesomeByAnalysis: Haruo, though extensive researches over old data logs, is able to understand Godzilla's natural defenses and strategizes how to kill it. [[spoiler:While they work with Fillius, it's very debatable how well they would work on Godzilla himself.]]
* BehemothBattle: As in ''Film/ShinGodzilla'', averted. The conflict in this film is strictly humans vs. monsters.
* BigBad: Godzilla is this, as he led his monsters to conquer Earth and destroy mankind.
* TheBusCameBack: Early backstory materials show that the kaiju invasion in the 21st century included Kamacuras, Anguirus, Rodan, Hedorah, [[Film/RebirthOfMothra2 Dagahra]], Dogora, and Orga, though it remains to be seen if they will be shown in the film itself. The prequel novel includes appearances from about a dozen more.
* TheCameo: Many other Toho kaiju show up in the flashbacks, but in the present day only Godzilla and [[spoiler: his "offspring"]] show up.
* CentralTheme: ''Revenge''. The whole film explores this theme and it shows exactly how bad it is. Haruo and Godzilla actively seeks vengeance, but guess who actually succeeds in it? Haruo, at times, verges on having a [[Literature/MobyDick Ahab-like obsession]] with killing Godzilla, beyond all reason and sanity. His own anger and obsession with revenge proved to be his downfall as he was completely unaware the Godzilla he hated so much is nearly invincible, but annihilates his army without trying.
* CruelTwistEnding: [[spoiler: The humans succeed in killing Godzilla, only to learn that it wasn't the Big G himself, but one of his ''[[MonsterIsAMommy children]]''. The real Godzilla proceeds to awaken and go on a PapaWolf rampage that destroys the majority of the army and leaves Haruo buried in rubble. Then TheStinger happens.]]
* CurbstompBattle: The film does not pull any punches on why Godzilla's name means "God Incarnate". In the flashback to the Monster Apocalypse he is shown decimating several cities, wiping out both humans and his fellow kaiju indiscriminately, and he tanks 150 nukes. [[spoiler:When he finally shows up in the film itself, six times the size he was during the flashback, he has the humans fleeing in terror. Unlike the last time, he devastates Haruo's army in a matter of two moves, rendering Haruo and possibly Metphies as the only survivors of his assault]].
* DarkerAndEdgier: By and far ''the'' darkest incarnation of the ''Godzilla'' franchise, outdoing even ''Film/ShinGodzilla''. Considering the writer behind being [[Creator/GenUrobuchi Urobutcher]], this isn't too surprising.
* DeathByOriginStory: Haruo's parents were killed by Godzilla when he attacked the evacuation site. Yuko's grandfather, who also took Haruo in after he was orphaned, was on the shuttle that exploded during the failed Tau'e colonization.
* DeathWorld:
** Tau Ceti e -- the planet the humans were hoping to settle -- turns out to be completely inhospitable. It is covered in massive hurricanes, and the shuttle carrying the elderly colonists was torn to shreds the moment it entered the atmosphere.
** Due to Godzilla winning and terraforming the Earth's biosphere, the planet has become this to humanity when they return after 20,000 years. The air itself is unbreathable. The plants -- which are offshoots of Godzilla -- have become hard enough to break a knife and with razor sharp leaves, and release metallic pollen that messes with radio communication and long-range sensors. That's not even getting into Flying-Type Servum -- dragon-like creatures that are offshoots of Godzilla and can shred armored vehicles with their claws -- let alone Godzilla himself. The planet has literally evolved to kill humans.
* DefiantToTheEnd: [[spoiler:The Latin American translation changes Leland's ProfaneLastWords from "to Hell with this planet" to (roughly) "Fuck you, monster!"]].
* {{Determinator}}: Haruo is obsessed with killing Godzilla, twice taking nearly suicidal actions to achieve that goal. It's this trait that makes Metphies so interested in him.
* DiabolusExMachina: [[spoiler: After they finally manage to defeat Godzilla, Martin Lazzari discusses the possibility that this may not have been the only specimen of Godzilla on the planet, given its uncanny similarity to the original specimen despite everything else on the planet evolving, to which Haruo replies [[TemptingFate at least they know they can defeat it]]. Cue the ''real'' Godzilla waking up...]]
* TheDreaded: Like always, Godzilla is regarded as the greatest threat mankind has ever faced.
* DrivenToSuicide: Some human survivors went insane due to despair and killed themselves after being in space for so long, fuelling Haruo's rage against Godzilla.
* EpicFail: The Bilusaludo constructed Mechagodzilla to take on the real deal, and when it was time to unveil it, they couldn't even turn it on.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: Haruo is introduced holed up the cockpit of a shuttle with a bomb attached to him, loudly demanding he speak to the higher ups about a colonization plan that he thinks is an attempt to lessen the mouths to feed on.
* {{Expy}}:
** The Exifs and Bilusaldo are stand-ins for the [[Film/InvasionOfAstroMonster Xilians]] and [[Film/GodzillaVsMechagodzilla Black Hole Aliens]].
** Haruo's attitude and quest for vengeance is reminiscent of [[Manga/AttackOnTitan another protagonist that wants to kill a monster responsible for the death of a parent, and he has nothing BUT revenge on his mind]]. His English voice-actor even noted the semblance on Twitter.
* {{Foreshadowing}}:
** In the beginning, the movie firmly established that Godzilla is a NoNonsenseNemesis, destroying anyone and anything he encounters immediately. Once the humans return to Earth, the humans had to be careful just in case Godzilla shows up. And indeed he does, but note that he ''did not'' attack immediately. He only attacked when he was provoked by Haruo. This is one of the signs that [[spoiler:it's a different Godzilla]]. And indeed, the Godzilla that Haruo defeats is [[spoiler:an offspring of the original, and once he shows up, he attacks the humans immediately]].
** [[spoiler:One of the natives appears on the background, keeping a lookout on the landing party, about halfway through the movie.]]
* FreezeFrameBonus:
** Almost all of the kaiju that appear in the film aside from Godzilla himself, thanks to only appearing in a brief newspaper crawl.
** Many of the reports and plans displayed on the holographic screens later on are extremely detailed and have actual text, but only appear for very short periods.
* GaiasVengeance: The Big G himself is strongly implied to be this, attacking and utterly destroying humans and monsters alike.
-->'''Metphies:''' He is the punishing iron hammer for the arrogant. For the species who pronounce themselves as lords of creation, a divine avenger will pay them a visit.
* GenericDoomsdayVillain: The reason for the mass kaiju invasion or Godzilla's animosity with humankind is never explained, but it is enough that Godzilla will not let any human in sight leave the planet alive.
* GiantEqualsInvincible: Averted with Godzilla [[spoiler:Fillius. With careful planning and a good strategy, the protagonists are able to kill it. Seemingly played straight with the ''real'' Big G, who is many times larger and more powerful.]]
* GiantFlyer: The flying variant of the Servum are multi-eyed, pterosaur-ish kaiju that share 97% of their genome with Godzilla.
* GreaterScopeVillain: [[spoiler:The real Godzilla. After most of humanity escaped Earth, Godzilla's presence affects the environment, both flora and fauna. Godzilla Fillius is active after the original goes dormant for 20,000 years. Once he wakes up, the humans have a reason to be terrified of him]].
* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler: Leland personally attacks Godzilla in one of the mecha-walkers midway through the film, buying time for the other forces to escape while also revealing the location of Godzilla's shield-generating organ, and pays for it with a personal blast from the kaiju's atomic breath]]. Later in the film, [[spoiler: Haruo ''tries'' to do this by using one of the MiniMecha to jump onto Godzilla's back, knowing that the artillery cannons will probably kill him alongside the monster. He ends up disengaging in time to avoid being blown up]].
* HomeworldEvacuation: To a limited extent. Only those chosen by a governing A.I. left on the colonization mission. And horribly deconstructed in Haruo's narration which he calls a hell worse then Godzilla. Due to the lack of space, resources, and energy, everyone is cold, hungry and miserable in their ship. It's only been 20 years but they still haven't found a planet they can colonize and it's gotten to the point that going back to Earth might be the only way to survive.
* HopeSpot: [[spoiler:Due to Haruo's plan and daring, they were able to kill Godzilla...'s child. And then the real one wakes up.]]
* HostileTerraforming:
** Godzilla has inflicted this on the Earth's biosphere in the centuries since humanity's HomeworldEvacuation, as described under DeathWorld. Ironically given that Godzilla is suggested to be GaiasVengeance against the human race, Nature has now been transformed to serve the needs of this new master, instead of reverting to a 'pristine' state.
** The landing party do their own small version by carpet-bombing the forest with thermobaric bombs in order to clear a landing site. Brings a whole new meaning to ComingInHot!
* HumanAliens: Humanity's evacuation of the Earth was assisted by two alien races: The Exifs and the Bilusaludo. The one thing that really sets them apart from humanity is a slower rate of aging.
* IdiotBall: Haruo carries this as soon as the ship arrives back on Earth, due to his RevengeBeforeReason. Once the drones pick up Godzilla [[spoiler:Fillius]], instead of doing the sensible thing and settling on the part of the planet least inhabited by monsters, he decides to take the fight to where Godzilla is. This results in several losses of life due to the Servum and Godzilla's attacks. [[spoiler:And once Godzilla Fillius is killed, the REAL Godzilla shows himself and kills seemingly everybody but Haruo.]]
* InconsistentSpelling: Official spellings of one alien species' name include "Bilusaludo", "Bilsaldians", and "Bilsards". %% context?
* JerkassHasAPoint: While he's not a {{Jerkass}} by any means, Leland does make a point that due to changed conditions on Earth, they're practically sitting ducks after the Servum attack their outpost. Even if they did find Godzilla, they would all be dead before they would even find find him.
* KilledOffscreen: All the kaiju introduced in the opening were killed by Godzilla at some point in the last few thousand years.
* KillThePoor: [[spoiler:On top of the colonization attempt of Tau'e at the beginning being a SuicideMission in and of itself (which is why Haruo was protesting as hard as he does -- all of the volunteers are people who have become 'useless' for the ship, such as the elderly), it is not unsubtly implied that the administrators deliberately set off a bomb in the shuttle just to be sure.]]
* LethallyStupid: Haruo survives but his selfish and severely ill-advised actions and choices to bring the fight to Godzilla instead of leaving well enough alone [[spoiler:lead to the death of every single member of the landing party which amounted to hundreds, if not thousands of people.]]
* MiniMecha: The human forces utilize these in two flavors: artillery-focused walkers with multiple pilots that are essentially tanks on legs, and more traditional single-pilot suits intended for close combat.
* MobySchtick: Replace "Moby Dick" with "Godzilla" and add the TraumaCongaLine of a HomeworldEvacuation that was botched in the long run and you have Haruo's mentality in a nutshell. This is a pretty regular mindset in the ''Godzilla'' franchise.
* MythologyGag:
** The Godzilla design seems to take strong cues from [[Film/Godzilla2014 Legendary's own Godzilla]].
** The roar used in two of the trailers is [[Film/Godzilla1998 Zilla's roars]]. The film itself it seems to use the Millennium roars.
** The chapter of ''Godzilla: Monster Apocalypse'' detailing Zilla notes that it is [[Film/GodzillaFinalWars much smaller and weaker than Godzilla]], but faster and more agile -- giving it an edge in urban environments; and that its greatest strength is ability to overrun cities by [[Film/Godzilla1998 asexually reproducing in vast numbers, with the young hunting prey in packs]].
** The Exifs and the Bilusaludo are based on the Xilians and the Simian aliens from past entries in the franchise. The Bilusaludo in particular even have a hand in creating Mecha-Godzilla, which they'd intended to use to conquer Earth once Godzilla had been dealt with.
** Dr. Martin might be referencing Steve Martin from the Americanized version of ''Film/Godzilla1954'', ''Film/GodzillaKingOfTheMonsters1956''.
** Mulu-Elu Galu-Gu's name is a reference to Mugal, the Simian leader in ''Film/TerrorOfMechaGodzilla''
* NiceJobBreakingItHero:
** Upon returning to Earth as a last resort to save the surviving people onboard the ship, Godzilla is detected on the planet. Rather than just leave him in peace and simply land on another part of the planet and allow the people to recolonize and live in harmony on their original home planet, Haruo extremely stupidly decides to take the battle to Godzilla for the sole reason of avenging his parents and forcing humanity off the planet. Less than a half hour on Earth, the landing party is attacked and ambushed by black spikey flying Rodan-like creatures which kill dozens of people and injure dozens more. Upon reaching Godzilla, Haruo orders everyone to attack the creature even though it paid them no heed. [[spoiler: In the eventually successful effort of killing Godzilla, dozens more people are killed... only for the REAL Godzilla to make itself known, upon which it promptly eradicates the surviving people and machinery to avenge it's freshly-killed offspring. Haruo got literally everyone but himself, and possibly Metphies, killed just because he wanted some revenge.]]
** Haruo's army made the mistake of fleeing while they were still frantic, to the point some used airships. The absolute panic not only caught Godzilla's attention, it annihilates them without even trying.
* NighInvulnerability: Godzilla took 150 nukes head on (which did a pretty nice number to the Midwest) and wasn't harmed. This is explained due to Godzilla [[spoiler:and Godzilla Fillius]] having a natural energy barrier.
* NonMaliciousMonster: Godzilla [[spoiler: Fillius]]. While he shoots down a probe, the reason why he attacks the humans was because he was provoked by Haruo. He would have simply left the humans alone as he doesn't appear to have the same animosity as he [[spoiler:(actually his father)]] displayed millennia ago. However, [[NiceJobBreakingItHero thanks to Haruo]], he attacks the humans' assault on him out of self-defense. [[spoiler:When the real Godzilla shows up, he appears to be anything ''but'' non-malicious]].
* NoSell: Godzilla is unfazed by having 150 nuclear bombs dropped on him due to his electromagnetic energy barrier.
* NotSoInvincibleAfterAll: In the film, [[spoiler:the humans manage to kill Godzilla Fillius after significant casualties, but on the assumption that they were fighting the real thing. The ''real'' Godzilla shows up not long after and promptly [[CurbStompBattle curbstomps]] the entire army in ten seconds flat.]]
* OhCrap: [[spoiler:Everyone's reaction when the real Godzilla wakes up and is ridiculously more powerful then the Godzilla Fillius, they nearly died to kill.]]
* PapaWolf: Godzilla will ''not'' let anyone escape. [[spoiler:Especially not the humans who killed his offspring.]]
* {{Planimal}}: This incarnation of Godzilla evolved from plant life and looks like a tree-person version of Legendary Godzilla. Further highlighting this is that both the flora and the fauna of Earth -- revealed to be offshoots of him -- share his physical traits (being biomechanical) and some of his abilities.
* ProfaneLastWords: [[spoiler:"To Hell with this planet", courtesy of Leland, before getting blown away with an Atomic Breath.]]
* RazorWind: Godzilla's tail whip attack destroys a mountain and appears to generate tornado-force winds that destroy [[spoiler: every surviving human besides Haruo]].
* ReclaimedByNature: A scene has the exploration team encountering the ruins of several buildings that, thanks to Godzilla's HostileTerraforming, had become giant hedges which allowed them to keep their shape even after several thousand years.
* RegionalRedecoration: What was once East Asia is shown to have experienced this after 20,000 years of Godzilla ruling and terraforming the Earth in humanity's absence.
* {{Revenge}}: The main theme of the film. It goes to point out exactly how bad it is and how far it will go.
* RevengeBeforeReason: Haruo is driven by rage and indignation at humanity's loss of Earth to the kaiju, especially Godzilla -- who he is driven by a Captain Ahab-level obsession to destroy. Part of this is understandable due him witnessing his parents die in one of Godzilla's attacks at a young age; spending 20 years living aboard the ''Aratrum'' in increasingly despair-ridden conditions, an increasingly severe lack of resources, and "endless days suffering from hunger, thirst, and cold"; and watching his foster grandfather be sacrificed in order to reduce the number of mouths the ship has to feed. Haruo claims he wants to fight against Godzilla to take the Earth back for humanity, and to renew humanity's hope and pride in itself despite their decreasing numbers, because he's convinced there's simply nowhere else to go. This is also his biggest flaw, as his determination for revenge leads him to make dozens of poorly-thought-out choices that cause him to not only put himself and countless others in danger through his recklessness, but which lead to his downfall and several deaths that could have easily been avoided; [[spoiler: not to mention the deaths of thousands of people at the hands of an enraged Godzilla after Haruo's army attacked and eventually killed his offspring, thinking it was him]].
* RightForTheWrongReasons: It's repeatedly theorized that Godzilla might have somehow reproduced, with Martin surmising that [[spoiler:the Godzilla they defeated is the original's descendant and there might be others around]]. He has ''no idea'' how accurate he was with that statement but was wrong [[spoiler:that the original is dead]].
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: [[spoiler:Godzilla completely obliterating Haruo's army and all surviving humans after they killed Godzilla Fillius who was his ''son.'']]
* {{Robeast}}: The Bilusaludo helped build a mecha patterned after Godzilla -- fittingly called Mecha-Godzilla -- with the intent of using it to kill Godzilla and then turning it on humanity to conquer Earth for themselves. Unfortunately for them, Mecha-Godzilla was unable to be activated and was left abandoned on Earth when Godzilla attacked the facility where it was being stored. 20 000 years later, it's still buried in the ruins and -- as it will play a big role in the sequel -- is still in operational condition.
* RunOrDie: Haruo's orders after [[spoiler:the real Godzilla wakes up.]]
* SciFiKitchenSink: Besides Godzilla there are two alien species working with humanity who have access to FasterThanLightTravel and mechas.
* TheScourgeOfGod: Metphies believes Godzilla is this as the Exifs have seen many civilization on different planets being destroyed by creatures like Godzilla.
* SinisterMinister:
** The Exifs originally intended to conquer Earth via evangelism, and the prequel novel reveals that their intervention helped humanity survive the crushing loss of faith incurred during the Monster Apocalypse. One character converted to the Exifs' religion even speculates that [[AncientAstronauts the Exifs visited Earth in the distant past]] and that various religions -- Judaism in particular -- originated as an attempt by the ancient humans at emulating the Exifs' religion.
** While outwardly a fairly mellow person with a wry sense of humour, [[spoiler:Metphies makes a number of comments that imply he was manipulating Haruo's desire for revenge in order to deliver the remnants of humanity to Godzilla -- who he and implicitly the other Exifs view as an instrument of divine punishment]].
* SlidingScaleOfIdealismVsCynicism: In a CrapsackWorld where kaiju runs rampant and especially Godzilla's reign on Earth, it's easy to see why Haruo sees it that way. The film makes a point that due to Godzilla's influence on Earth, it's practically a DeathWorld where flora and fauna thrive. And then there's the kicker that Godzilla [[spoiler: grew 300 meters and was sleeping for centuries]].
* TheStinger: [[spoiler:Haruo wakes up in an unfamiliar bed and finds himself being tended to by a masked, pink-haired woman, who takes off her mask and reveals herself to be human. Cut to black.]]
* SoleSurvivor: [[spoiler:The fate of the other characters are unknown aside from Metphies, but Haruo survives]].
* SuperScream: [[spoiler:The real Godzilla's roars are so powerful that he can destroy ships with it.]]
* TailSlap: [[spoiler:The original Godzilla]] is so massive that a single swing of his tail creates a shockwave that [[spoiler:destroys a fleet of ships]].
* ThatsNoMoon: The "mountain" near the location where they ambush and kill Godzilla [[spoiler: Fillus is actually Godzilla]]!
* ThereIsAnother: [[spoiler:The Godzilla that Haruo defeats is not the Godzilla that drove humanity away. The ''real'' one was dormant for 20,000 years]].
* TimeDilation: The humans that evacuated Earth (and those who returned) use experimental hyperdrives. Relativistic physics made them age a whole lot slower--what has been twenty years for the remnants of humanity has been 20,000 for Earth, resulting in a radically different ecosystem.
* TookALevelInBadass: [[spoiler:The real Godzilla was about as powerful as Godzilla Fillius 20,000 years ago and since then has gotten much stronger.]]
* TooDumbToLive: PlayedStraight with everyone but [[LethallyStupid Haruo]] who just blindly agreed to go along with the death wish plan of their leader who clearly does not have his head on straight, even more egregious so that not one person objects and suggests that they get the hell out even after the sudden attack by the Servum. To be fair, the film establishes that life in space hasn't been particularly kind to humanity, even if they haven't been spacefarers for as long as either the Exifs or the Bilusaludo. Every attempt to colonize other moons or planets has ended in disaster, and resources are dwindling, so even if they did retreat, they'd only buy themselves a few months of survival at best. There's also the fact that Metphies [[spoiler:may have manipulated Haruo and his forces into essentially getting themselves killed via Godzilla Fillius, or the real Godzilla himself.]] Nonetheless, that no one thought to come up with possibly successful alternatives even AFTER Metphies' endorsement of the plan still qualifies.
* TranquilFury: [[spoiler:The real Godzilla bellows after waking up after Haruo and his army defeats Godzilla Fillius. When he sees the humans, he sends a power breath that destroys most of the humans' fleet and sends a tail whip that can ''slice'' and destroy a mountain]]. Truly a God incarnate...
* UncertainDoom: The fate of Adam and other named characters aside from Haruo (who is explicitly shown surviving) and Yuko (who managed to escape and is present in the poster for the sequel, all but confirming her survival) after [[spoiler:the real]] Godzilla attacks are unknown. The synopsis for the sequel reveals that Mulu-elu Galu-gu survives.
* UnspokenPlanGuarantee: The plan presented by Haruo and the other strategists of the expedition [[spoiler:see an awful lot of casualties and obstacles such as the mini-Godzilla monsters, but it still goes exactly as described and works exactly as projected.]] So it's not really much of a surprise when [[spoiler:it turns out that the Godzilla the expedition killed is Godzilla's ''child'' and the ''real'' Godzilla is so much StrongerWithAge that the resulting CurbStompBattle when he wakes up full of PapaWolf rage is not even [[OneHitKill charitably describable]] as a "battle".]]
* VillainForgotToLevelGrind: [[spoiler:Inverted. The strategy that the protagonist invented to defeat Godzilla, was thought for the Godzilla of 20,000 years ago. Unfortunately for humans, Godzilla has become much more powerful at that time. So it would be a case of Hero Forgot To Level Grind.]]
* VillainWorld: The story is set in a world where the kaiju basically won and humanity had no choice but to flee the planet. Now, 20,000 years later humanity returns to find a world firmly under their control.
* WhamLine: [[spoiler:There is more than one Godzilla]].
* WhamShot:
** [[spoiler:The humans have succeeded in killing Godzilla and everyone is celebrating, but then a nearby mountain starts to collapse, [[ThereIsAnother and a certain someone's distinctive spines begin to emerge from the rubble]]..]].
** [[spoiler:The Stinger adds another: that at least some humans have managed to survive the past 20,000 years on Earth.]]
* YouKilledMyFather: Haruo's hatred of Godzilla happened is because the latter killed his parents when they were in an escape shuttle. The feeling is now officially mutual [[spoiler:after Haruo kills Godzilla Fillius, AKA the ''son'' of Godzilla]].
