[[AnArmAndALeg Amputations]] in anime and manga.
----

* In ''Anime/AICOIncarnation'', Kazuki lost his right arm in a Matter attack and had it replaced by a prosthetic. Over the course of the series, he loses his prosthetic arm in another Matter attack, gets a replacement, and then sacrifices the replacement in order to carry out an attack in the final battle, and receives ''another'' replacement at the end.
* In ''Manga/{{Akira}}'', an orbital laser disintegrates Tetsuo's arm. While he fashions himself a robotic replacement, the lost arm does lead to his power having an outlet and thus his transformation into an EldritchAbomination.
* In ''Manga/AliceInBorderland'', [[spoiler: one of the players in Borderland, Akane Heiya, lost her left leg after struggling to escape from the baseball arena. It was destroyed by the initial burst of hot water, which resulted in it being amputated. This is a reflection of what she was experiencing in the real world, as after Japan got struck with a meteor, her left leg was amputated with a Flex-Foot Cheeta.]]
* In ''Anime/TheAnimatrix'' : ''The Second Renaissance Part II'', during a battle sequence, a gigantic battle robot rips open a mecha to get at the human inside. Metal tentacles snake in and coil around his limbs, and then rip him away from them as he screams.
* In ''Manga/AoNoFuuin'', [[spoiler: Takao]] cuts off his own left leg when it gets crushed under a boulder.
* A frequent occurrence in ''Manga/AttackOnTitan'', with both humans and Titans losing limbs all over the place. The Titans simply regrow them, while their human victims are [[EatenAlive less fortunate]]. On the other hand, the [[spoiler: Titan Shifters]] are shown to be able to regenerate [[spoiler:in human form.]]
** Eren suffers a Type 2 during the Battle of Trost, losing first a leg and then an arm in the process. They've grown back by the time he emerges from his Titan form.
** [[spoiler:Ymir]] ends up suffering a Type 2, and nearly dies as a result. Due to her massive injuries, she's still regrowing them 5 - 6 hours later.
** [[spoiler:Erwin]] also ends up suffering a Type 2 when a Titan drags him off his horse by one arm, causing him to lose it as a result.
** [[spoiler:Reiner]] suffers a Type 3, when Mikasa cuts off one arm and bisects the remaining one nearly to the elbow. Unlike [[spoiler: Ymir]], he's fully healed 5 hours later.
** Much later on, [[spoiler:Eren]] invokes Type 3 in order to sneak into the enemy territory of Liberio without being detected, while also pretending to be a ShellShockedVeteran. He uses this to [[spoiler:manipulate Reiner's subordinate Falco into helping him send letters and communicate with outside parties]] from within a psychiatric hospital. [[spoiler:Eren]] then uses [[spoiler:Falco]] to meet with [[spoiler:Reiner]] for the first time in several years. After negotiations of peace talks [[spoiler:between them fail]], he regenerates his limbs and [[spoiler:turns into his Titan form]].
* In ''Literature/{{Baccano}}'', Ladd Russo finds his left forearm stripped to the bone after [[spoiler:a nasty run-in with the Rail Tracer]].
* ''Manga/{{Beastars}}'':
** During a Drama Club practice, [[spoiler:Tao, a black panther, accidentally ends up ripping out grey anteater Kibi's ''right arm off'', which puts Tao in a depressive state. Thankfully, Kibi manages to recover from the accident by reattaching his arm and holds no grudges with Tao, wishing to avoid growing up fearing carnivores.]]
** Near the end of the Murder Incident Solution arc, [[spoiler:Louis offers his right 4-marked foot to Legoshi so he can unlock his latent power to defeat Riz in battle. Legoshi ends up eating it and brings Riz down, though Legoshi doesn't end up killing Riz because he can't bring himself to do it and the fact it became New Year and both survived the encounter.]]
* Guts of ''Manga/{{Berserk}}'' loses part of his left arm to the demons during the Eclipse [[spoiler:when a demon with a set of impressive choppers clamps down on it, and he has to chisel it off with what's left of his weapon to free himself so he can save Casca from being raped by Griffith as Femto. He fails in this endeavor due to being dogpiled by monsters and getting his eye clawed out soon after freeing himself, though that doesn't make the moment any less badass]].
* Happens more than once in ''Manga/BlackJack''. For example, in an early story from the 2004 anime, a promising sushi chef named Taku loses both of his hands in a Type 2, when he's run over by a truck driver named Akira; for massive irony, Akira then crashes his truck ''and'' almost loses his hands too, so Black Jack implants Taku's hands in the place of his own. Akira becomes TheAtoner as he begins working for [[SternTeacher Taku]] to [[WorkOffTheDebt try paying off the damage done to him]]. [[spoiler: By the end, Akira dies and, before kicking it, he asks Black Jack to ''re-implant the hands back in Taku's stumps'' so his friend will be able to keep cooking and fulfill his dreams. And yup, Black Jack manages to do it: Taku's hands somehow work perfectly after this, and he's last seen cooking for his mother and Akira's widow, mentally thanking Akira for this second chance.]]
* The end of the ''Roberta's Blood Trail'' OVA for the ''Manga/BlackLagoon'' anime leads to [[spoiler:Roberta's 'reckoning' for [[RoaringRampageOfRevenge her actions during the arc]]; she gets into a fight with an American special forces unit]] and loses her left arm from the shoulder down, her right leg from the knee down, her right eye and two fingers on her right arm and is left wheelchair-bound. This was a notable departure from the original manga, which was much kinder to the character in question.
* Near the end of the ''Anime/BlackRockShooter'' anime, [[spoiler:Insane Black Rock Shooter]] casually tears her own arm off after it's implied to have been rendered useless by a slash wound to the upper arm. Since this bleeds a lot more than the original wound, it seems to be more for the squick factor rather than something actually practical.
* ''Manga/{{Blame}}'': Killy gets his arm ripped off whenever he fires his [[WaveMotionGun GBE]] at too high a setting. His HealingFactor allows him to reattach it every time, though.
* ''Manga/{{Bleach}}'': Happens so often that it's almost a RunningGag. Missing arms rarely ''stay'' missing.
** In the very first chapter, Ichigo cuts off the left arm and right leg of the Hollow attacking his home, before splitting its head open.
** When [[OurGiantsAreBigger Jidanbo]] tries to open the gate leading to the Seireitei after Ichigo defeats him, Gin shows up and reminds the gatekeeper that his job is to keep intruders out, not to invite them in. He then uses [[RetractableWeapon Shinso]] to cut off Jidanbo's left arm, leaving him unable to keep the gate open. [[TheMedic Orihime]] then spends the rest of the day restoring his arm.
** Ichigo manages to cut off one of Yammy's arms when they first meet. Yammy later has it reattached by an Arrancar nurse, and promptly tests it by [[UngratefulBastard smashing her head]] into [[LudicrousGibs ketchup]] in the manga; in the anime Yammy punches her so hard that her head is smashed against the wall, but the result is more or less the same. He even has the gall to complain that the arm is weaker than before, since normally he would've been strong enough to punch her in half.
** Ikkaku's battle with Edorad culminates with both warriors putting all of their power into their final attacks; Ikkaku's Bankai ends up destroyed, but Edorad ends with his entire right arm missing, along with half of his torso. He expresses gratitude that [[MyNameIsInigoMontoya Ikkaku shared his name with him]], before he dies from his injuries.
** After Grimmjow takes his Fracciones on an unauthorized trip to the World of the Living in order to kill Ichigo and his friends, from which he ends up being the sole survivor, Aizen makes no move to punish him. [[TheDragon Tousen]], [[{{pun}} on the other hand]], can't stand Grimmjow's attitude and cuts off and incinerates his left arm, preventing it from being reattached like Yammy. The loss of Grimmjow's arm means a reduction of his strength, enough that he's demoted from the Espada and replaced by Luppi, who taunts him over this. He later has the arm restored after Orihime is kidnapped by Ulquiorra, and celebrates regaining his former rank by punching a hole in Luppi and disintegrating his upper half with a Cero.
** While Ichigo is [[BattleInTheCenterOfTheMind fighting his Inner Hollow]] in order to gain the power to control his Hollowfication, his body in the real world becomes [[TheBerserker hollowfied]], leaving the Visored to take turns fighting him to contain him until Ichigo is finished. At one point, Kensei hits him so hard he blows his left arm clean off; Ichigo simply [[HealingFactor grows a new one]].
** Kenpachi cuts off one of Nnoitra's [[MultiArmedAndDangerous four arms]] after the latter uses his [[OneWingedAngel Resurrección]]. Nnoitra simply grows a new one after revealing that he actually has ''[[IAmNotLeftHanded six]]'' arms.
*** He also cuts off one of Tesra's hands while [[HalfTheManHeUsedTobe chopping him in half]].
** Soi Fon orders [[NumberTwo Omaeda]] to [[LifeOrLimbDecision cut off her left arm]] to stop Baraggan's [[RapidAging Respira]] from taking over her whole body. It is eventually restored during the TimeSkip.
** Hachi removes his own right arm, also infected with Respira, to [[HoistByHisOwnPetard kill Baraggan by teleporting it inside his chest]]. It is also restored during the TimeSkip.
** Harribel's three [[EliteMooks Fraccion]] rip off their own arms to summon [[TheBerserker Ayon]]. Whether they can grow new ones is unknown, but Orihime restores them after the first time.
** After Ichigo transforms into a [[SuperpoweredEvilSide complete Hollow]], he cuts off Ulquiorra's left arm and [[GrievousHarmWithABody hits him with it]]. Ulquiorra simply [[HealingFactor grows a new one]] in a second. Ichigo later throws the arm at Ulquiorra to distract him.
** As everyone gangs up on Aizen, Komamura tries to attack him with his [[FightingSpirit Bankai]]; [[OneManArmy Aizen]] casually shrugs it off and counterattacks, breaking [[OurGiantsAreBigger Kokujo Tengen Myouou's]] sword, cutting off its left hand and reflecting the damage on Komamura.
*** Not long after, he also cuts off the left arm of Hitsugaya after he attacks him in rage for [[spoiler:[[KickTheDog tricking him into stabbing Hinamori]]]].
** Aizen brutally rips off the right arm of [[spoiler:[[DragonWithAnAgenda Gin after the latter betrays him]]]].
** [[OffscreenMomentOfAwesome While we do not get to see the end of Yammy's battle with Kenpachi and Byakuya]], the last we do see of him is dying of his injuries within Las Noches. One such injury is half of his right arm missing. What we do see of their fight mostly involves Kenpachi chopping off [[VertebrateWithExtraLimbs several of his legs]] and [[{{Fingore}} fingers]].
** During his second fight with Tsukishima, Ichigo uses his Fullbring to cut off his left arm. Then, to his horror, a [[BackstoryInvader brainwashed]] Orihime restores it.
** Yhwach's EstablishingCharacterMoment consists of him lopping off the right arm of Luders [[DisproportionateRetribution for bickering with Ebern in front of him]]. Luders is left lying on the floor, bleeding and in a lot of pain, so Yhwach offers to let him stay like that, only to point out that since he won't be needing his legs then he will remove them, too. Luders promptly struggles to get on his knees before [[BadBoss Yhwach]] can deliver.
** Yamamoto sacrifices his arm in battle to try to blow up Aizen. After Aizen is eventually defeated, [[HonorBeforeReason Yamamoto never seeks help in having the arm replaced or restored, both of which are possible]]. When he and Yhwach meet in battle for the first time in a thousand years, Yhwach tells him that he's become weak and is no longer the formidable opponent Yhwach remembers. To Yhwach, Yamamoto's missing arm represents the loss of Yamamoto's ruthless, thuggish nature, which is what made him so dangerous in the past. [[spoiler:Yamamoto's refusal to ask Orhime to restore his lost arm is what Yhwach cites as the reason why he so easily defeats Yamamoto and steals his Bankai. The defeat of Yamamoto sets off a chain of events that changes the entire direction of the Gotei 13, and opens the Royal Realm to being conquered.]]
** Candice ends up losing her left arm after Ichigo counters her [[ShockAndAwe Electrocution]], leaving her to [[LadySwearsalot curse loudly]] while gripping the bloody stump. She then yells at Giselle to heal it.
** Yoruichi [[LifeOrLimbDecision tears her arm off]] to stop [[LovecraftianSuperpower Pernida]] from [[PeoplePuppets taking control of the rest of her body]]. Orihime restores it with her power.
** Bazz-B loses his right arm while fighting Haschwalth, though it barely slows him down as he keeps fighting.
** Kenpachi cuts off [[SizeShifter Gerard's]] right arm when he interrupts his fight with Byakuya and Hitsugaya, only for Gerard to casually [[HealingFactor regrow]] a new, stronger arm. Not long after, Kenpachi uses [[spoiler:[[TheBerserker Bankai]]]], after which he just as casually removes Gerard's right arm a second time. ''By [[NowThatsUsingYourTeeth biting it]] and ripping it off his shoulder''. Not finished, Kenpachi then jumps to attack Gerard, who tries to defend himself with his shield: it does little to protect him, as Kenpachi cuts it in half, along with Gerard's left hand.
** During the final battle against [[GodEmperor Yhwach]], he cuts off Renji's left arm while he's using Bankai, and later does the same to Ichigo, before [[TorsoWithAView blasting a hole in his chest]]. [[spoiler:Then [[ImmortalLifeIsCheap Aizen]] reveals that Yhwach was fighting him instead of Ichigo, [[MasterOfIllusion as he had been placed under an illusion by Kyoka Suigetsu]], after which the real Ichigo [[CombatPragmatist attacks Yhwach from behind]].]]
* ''Manga/CallOfTheNight'':
** When Seri first meets Yamori and tries to take a bite out of him, [[ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend Nazuna]] makes her presence known by [[DynamicEntry flying into the scene and ripping her arm off]]. [[GoodThingYouCanHeal Seri nonchalantly collects the severed arm and reattaches it to the stump]].
** [[spoiler:Yamori]]'s arm is severed by Susuki after she [[{{telefrag}} weaponizes]] her {{intangibility}}. [[spoiler:[[DidntSeeThatComing Susuki is then caught by surprise]] when [[TheBerserker this sends Yamori into a frenzy]] and he [[PullingThemselvesTogether remotely reattaches his arm]], something no other vampire has been known to do.]]
** [[spoiler:Yamori rips off Haruka's arm during their second fight after feeling that, [[JerkassHasAPoint for all the concern he shows towards Nazuna]], he's not addressing her with the proper respect.]]
* There's a type 1 at the climax of ''Anime/{{Canaan}}'' [[spoiler: when BigBad Alphard shoots her own arm off at the elbow rather than surrender to the titular heroine.]]
* In ''Manga/CandyCandy'', [[spoiler: Susanna Marlowe]] goes through a type 2 after she loses her leg when she performs a DivingSave by saving [[spoiler: Terry]] from a falling stage lamp. The accident [[TragicDream ruined her acting career]] [[BreakTheCutie and totally broke her mind.]]
** A Type 2 also happened to a former war nurse Candy befriends while in Mary Jane's Nursing School. The nurse shows Candy her orthopedic leg and explains that she lost her actual one while [[TakingTheBullet trying to shield one of her patients from falling debris]].
* In one of the ''Manga/CaseClosed'' {{non serial movie}}s, Conan and Co. ''find a human arm on a table'' during a cruise, which kicks off the plot. [[spoiler: The arm belongs to Lieutenant Yousuke Sasaura, a missing member of the JSDF (Japanese Self-Defense Forces), whose one-armed and drowned corpse is found later.]]
* ''Literature/ACertainMagicalIndex''.
** Touma Kamijou has his [[AntiMagic Imagine Breaker]] right arm sliced off by Aureolus Izzard in an attempt to depower him. However, there is a dragon that lives inside his body that is normally sealed by Imagine Breaker, and it emerges from the stump to scare Aureolus half to death. After the battle, his arm is re-attached.
** Shizuri Mugino's left arm gets disintegrated when it gets caught in her own energy blast. This is part of the reason why she sought revenge against Shiage Hamazura for causing that and she creates an artificial arm out of her Meltdowner energy to use as a weapon. She eventually gets a cybernetic arm.
** In Touma's later battle against Fiamma of the Right, Imagine Breaker got cut off again, then Fiamma assimilated the arm in an attempt to gain the power of Imagine Breaker. The dragon emerges from the stump, but Touma recalled it and his arm grew back, which also made the power Fiamma stole from him return.
** Fiamma of the Right gets his right arm blown off by Creator/AleisterCrowley. It doesn't grow back and the loss partially destabilizes Fiamma's powers.
** Touma loses Imagine Breaker again in Baggage City, at Othinus's hands. However, Othinus easily defeats the dragon that emerges and would have killed Touma if Ollerus and Fiamma hadn't rescued him. After the battle, his arm grows back.
** Kakeru Kamisato uses his World Rejecter ability to rip off Touma's right arm and send it to another dimension. The dragon emerges and drives him off, then Touma's arm grows back.
** Kakeru gets his right hand removed by Yuiitsu Kihara, who then transplants it onto herself and gains his World Rejecter ability. He eventually gets his hand back, but has to wait to reattach it or else his power will turn on him.
** Eventually, when Touma loses his right arm yet again in a battle against Coronzon, instead of growing back, his arm develops a life of its own and turns into a clone of him, and becomes an antagonist. Touma has to defeat his clone to get his arm back.
* ''Manga/ACertainScientificRailgun'': Touma has his Imagine Breaker arm disintegrated by Mikoto's out of control powers. The dragon emerges and seals Mikoto's powers before returning to Touma's body and his arm growing back.
* Thanks to the warriors' [[GoodThingYouCanHeal regenerative abilities]], this happens on a routine basis in ''Manga/{{Claymore}}'':
** Irene loses an arm to Priscilla, turning her into a HandicappedBadass when she survives the battle.
** Clare loses an arm to Ophelia, but Irene then cuts off her own remaining arm and gives it to Clare as a replacement.
** [[NighInvulnerability Deneve's]] most impressive limb-loss to date was when she ripped off her own zombie-infected arm and [[GrievousHarmWithABody chucked it at the enemy.]]
** Priscilla cut off her own arm after shoving it through Raki's shoulder, and it has now become a MacGuffin after falling into the hands of the Organization.
* In ''Manga/{{Cyborg 009}}'', [[spoiler: Francoise/Cyborg 003]] goes through a Type 1 after losing [[spoiler: her]] right arm (along with [[spoiler: her [[EyeScream eyes]] ]]) during the "Conclusion: God's War" arc of the manga. Later [[spoiler: she gets a robotic limb, one with a bullet-firing hand similar to Albert's.]]
** Jet/Cyborg 002's legs tend to blow up on him quite often, and he got his arm torn off in the '79 series. [[spoiler: And in "Conclusion: God's War", he loses both his legs (along with [[HalfTheManHeUsedToBe a good deal of his lower half]]) not once, but TWICE within the arc. The novel version amps things up by also having him lose both of his arms by the end.]]
* One of the Final Killing Game participants in ''Anime/Danganronpa3TheEndOfHopesPeakHighSchool'' cuts off their own arm in order to circumvent the negative effects of the bracelets that enforce the games' rules. [[spoiler: It's Juzo Sakakura, and he uses his new-found 'freedom' to save Makotos' life and end the game for everyone.]]
** There's also an example in ''Side:Hope'': [[spoiler: Nagito Komaeda comes back, and he has replaced his left arm (the one he had already replaced with Juno Enoshimas left arm) with a mechanical one, thus showing that he, and by extension the rest of Class 77-B had been cured of Junkos' brainwashing.]]
* In ''Manga/DeliciousInDungeon'' [[spoiler: Laios loses his left leg just below the knee to deal a fatal blow to the Red Dragon. Fortunately, Marcille reattaches it.]]
* ''Manga/DemonSlayerKimetsuNoYaiba'':
** Inosuke seems to be a fan of this: he cuts off the hands of the horned demon in the Tsuzumi Mansion and the Spider Father in Mount Natagumo.
** Rengoku repeatedly chops off Akaza's arms during their fight, but Akaza's absurdly powerful HealingFactor allows him to regrow them almost instantly.
** Tengen loses his left hand while fighting Gyutaro. He then cuts off Gyutaro's left arm shortly before Tanjiro kills him.
* Type 1 (subverted) and 3 in the ''Manga/DGrayMan'' anime, when Kanda deliberately receives a blow that nearly severs his arm at the shoulder in order to defeat the Millenium Swordsman by hacking off ''his'' sword arm ("He wouldn't give up his sword.").
* ''Anime/DragonBallZ'':
** In ''Anime/DragonBallZTheHistoryOfTrunks'', [[FutureBadass Future Gohan]] loses his left arm fighting the Androids.
** Tenshinhan loses his left arm below the shoulder courtesy of Nappa. He gets it back when he dies and goes to Other World, and keeps it after being wished back to life.
** Piccolo loses his arm three times in the series. Fortunately, he's a Namekian and can regrow it, which he first reveals during the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament - when Goku has badly injured the arm, Piccolo rips it off and regrows it in front of a stunned audience. He shows off the ability again when he regrows his arm after losing it in the fight with Raditz, and again when Cell drains and desiccates one arm with his tail; Piccolo just breaks it off and grows it back. His fellow Namekian Nail also loses an arm while fighting Frieza and regrows it.
** Cell's arm is disintegrated by Vegeta's Final Flash. Thanks to his Namekian genes, he can regrow it with little effort.
** Though an unusual limb, Goku, Gohan and Vegeta losing their tails counts, as without them they can't transform into Oozaru at the full moon.
** During the Android Saga, Android 19 loses the lowermost portions of his arms to Vegeta; later, Android 20 has half of one arm broken off by Piccolo.
* In ''Manga/ElfenLied'', this happens a LOT. Massive pain is the only thing that disrupts the concentration of Diclonii strongly enough to keep them from using their telekinetic powers and ripping off limbs is the only way to subdue them without immediately killing them. In the case of Lucy, she also enjoys the torture. Heads and internal organs also occasionally go flying.
** There is the famous scene where Nana lose all of her four limbs to Lucy.
** Mariko's right arm is blown up by [[spoiler:mother-figure Saito, who she just ripped in half.]]
** Bando's right arm is ripped off by Lucy. But that's not as bad as his [[EyeScream eyes]].
** [[spoiler:Due to self-defense, the DNA personality of Lucy has ripped an arm of Kurama off.]]
** [[spoiler:Lucy's arm melts down first before the rest of her body does.]]
* ''Manga/{{Embalming}}'': Since the story is about making Frankenstein monsters, lost limbs are a recurring hazard.
* ''Manga/FullmetalAlchemist'':
** The series has had two types among multiple characters, the better to show off the universe's automail ArtificialLimbs. Edward Elric, the main character had his leg taken away from him by [[JerkassGods Truth]] as a "equivalent exchange" and then deliberately sacrificed his right arm to bring back his brother's soul (who lost his body for the same reason) so he got a type 1 and 3. Also one character hacks off her own (already all but severed) arm and attaches it to a stray dog to throw off Bradley's scent. Those are the two biggest characters we see it happen to, but several more have it as part of their back story.
** Wrath gets both of his arms blown off by Scar. He still manages to get in the last blow of the battle despite this.
** In ''Anime/FullmetalAlchemist2003'', Scar lost both his arms after Kimblee causes an giant explosion.
** Paninya lost her legs in a train crash, making her a type 2. Her main motivation is to pay back the automail mechanic who built them for her.
** The Rockbells' ''dog'', Den, lost a leg for unknown reasons, presumably type 2.
* ''Manga/FushigiYuugiGenbuKaiden'':
** DelicateAndSickly [[spoiler: Prince Temudan]], whose illness causes him to lose his limbs, which are replaced with prosthetics.
** Much later in the story, [[spoiler: Temudan himself orders for his treacherous brother Tegiru's CruelAndUnusualDeath, which consists of Tegiru having one arm, one leg ''and'' [[EyeScream one eye]] cut off before being [[OffWithHisHead beheaded]].]]
* ''Anime/FutureGPXCyberFormula'':
** Edelhi Bootsvorz loses his left arm (and his [[EyeScream left eye]]) in a accident during a test drive while competing with Osamu. After the accident, he gets ArtificialLimbs of his arm and a mechanical eye and more natural-looking ones later in the series.
** Also happens to John Cleeve, a former racer. Maria tells Hayato that he lost his leg in a accident while returning home from a test drive, and the [[CareerEndingInjury accident ended his racing career]].
* Being a fighting series set in Edo period Japan, ''Manga/{{Gamaran}}'' is full of people who gets mutilated in battle losing to a more skilled opponent. Usually, they're unlikely to survive to their wounds, either bleeding out or because they're finished off a moment later.
* Akira got his left arm bitten off when putting the [[FromASingleCell near-unkillable]] enemy leader into the gigantic baby's mouth in ''Manga/GreenWorldz'', knowing full well of the risk. This [[spoiler:did not happen to him in the original timeline]].
* In ''Anime/GuiltyCrown'', Shu lost his right arm [[spoiler: and by extension his Power of Kings]] to [[spoiler: Gai]] after he led the breakout from Ward 34.
* ''Franchise/{{Gundam}}'':
** In ''Anime/MobileSuitGundam0083StardustMemory'', we meet Kelly Layzner, a One Year War pilot who lost an arm during the war. He proves to be a HandicappedBadass after modifying the Val Waro Mobile Armor to be used one-armed, then goes on to nearly be Kou Uraki and the newly modified Gundam GP-01 Full Burnian.
** In ''Anime/MobileSuitGundamThe08thMSTeam'', Shiro Amada rips off the useless left arm of his Gundam Ez-8 to beat Norris Packard's Gouf Custom. Later, [[spoiler:he loses part of his right leg after getting caught in the destruction of the Ez-8 and the Apsaulus III.]]
** In ''Anime/MobileFighterGGundam'', Sai Saici rips off the arm of the Dragon Gundam as part of a BatmanGambit against the Neptune Gundam. Since he's connected to the Gundam via the Mobile Trace System, he's in considerable pain.
** In ''Anime/MobileSuitGundamSEED'', Andrew Waltfeld ends up losing an arm, a leg and an eye after getting caught in the destruction of his [=LaGOWE=] Mobile Suit that also claimed the life of his lover Aisha. Notably, he doesn't actually hold a grudge towards Kira Yamato for either of those, since he rationalized it as they were soldiers doing their duty and becomes a stalwart ally once he joins Lacus Clyne. He gets prosthetics in ''Anime/MobileSuitGundamSEEDDestiny''.
** In ''Manga/MobileSuitGundamThunderbolt'', nearly everyone in Zeon's Living Dead division has lost one or more limbs. Daryl Lorenz in particular lost both of his legs during the war, then his left hand got burned off by a beam saber courtesy of Io Fleming's Gundam, then he voluntarily had his perfectly functional right hand amputated as well so that he can use the Psyco Zaku, whose BrainComputerInterface [[DisabilitySuperpower requires a quadruple amputee to pilot]].
* ''Manga/GunslingerGirl'':
** Several of the girls suffered Type 3s [[TragicBackstory before being cyborgized]] as Type 1s, and occasionally get Type 2s in the course of their missions.
** Happens literally when the Turin nuclear plant is seized by terrorists. Triela does an AirVentInfiltration, but on exiting the duct gets ambushed by Barrett .50 anti-tank rifles that blow off an arm and a leg. She keeps fighting regardless, but eventually dies of blood loss.
* In the ''Anime/{{Hellsing}}'' TV anime by Gonzo, Anderson got both of his arms blown off by Alucard. In the manga, only one of his arm was blown off.
** And in the manga and OVA, Zorin Blitz chops Seras' left arm off (Type 3). While most of Seras' injuries heal, she can't regenerate her arm, although it's replaced by something even better — a mass of blood-shadow that she can use as a weapon. — It is not like she couldn't, more like she doesn't. In the Epilogue, she's shown with both arms normal (while still using her powers through said arm).
* All over ''Manga/HunterXHunter'', often to show the large difference in power two characters fighting have.
** Hisoka allows one of his opponents to rip off both his arms so it would be easier for ''Hisoka'' to beat him. He later has them reattached by Machi from the Phantom Troupe.
** [[spoiler:Kite]] loses an arm when [[spoiler:Neferpitou]] attacks him after jumping at him from ''miles'' away.
** The Chimera ant King attempts to use a life or death gamble to unnerve Komugi during a game of Gungi; it backfires and makes him feel like he was the one lacking the resolve to risk his own life. To apologize for trying to use this tactic, he rips off his own arm to the horror of everyone present, before challenging Komugi to another match. She refuses to continue playing until the King has his arm treated; when the King [[NervesOfSteel fails to threaten Komugi into continuing anyway]], he relents and summons [[TheMedic Neferpitou]] to restore his arm.
** [[spoiler:Meruem]] easily cuts off one of [[spoiler: Netero's]] legs and arm, showing just how outmatched [[spoiler: Netero]] was.
** [[spoiler:Main character Gon]] loses an arm when [[spoiler:Neferpitou's [[DutyThatTranscendsDeath Nen-animated corpse]]]] lunges at his back while he's distracted. Without missing a beat, [[spoiler:Gon pins the corpse down using his ''own torn-off arm'']].
* In ''Manga/InThisCornerOfTheWorld'', [[spoiler:main character Suzu loses her right hand to a time-delayed bomb that also [[DeathOfAChild kills her young niece Harumi]]. To make matters worse, the hand she loses is her drawing hand, and the loss of both her hand and Harumi greatly affects her in the last third of the story]]. In the manga, there's an ArtShift where [[spoiler:after Suzu loses her hand, the backgrounds are drawn more unevenly and shaded in very roughly, as though they were drawn by a right-handed person who has to use their left hand]].
* ''Manga/InuYasha'': When Inuyasha fought his AloofBigBrother for possession of their father's most powerful sword, he proved he had the better claim by cutting Sesshoumaru's arm off with it. Sesshoumaru's arm then becomes the ChekhovsGun for some CharacterDevelopment that doesn't come to fruition until 50+ volumes later.
* Happens multiple times in ''Manga/JoJosBizarreAdventure'':
** Near the end of ''Manga/JojosBizarreAdventureBattleTendency'', [[BigBad Kars]] chops off Joseph Joestar's left arm after emerging from a volcano. [[spoiler:This ultimately proves to be a mistake.]]
** An odd reversal of this trope occurs in ''Manga/JojosBizarreAdventureDiamondIsUnbreakable'', where main villain Yoshikage Kira enjoys killing women by destroying all of their body ''except'' their arms. The guy's got a hand {{Fetish}}.
** A self-inflicted one occurs in ''Manga/JoJosBizarreAdventureGoldenWind'' by Leone Abbachio, in order to keep a key from falling into enemy hands. It's reattached soon after.
* In ''Manga/KemonoJihen'', Kabane has been on both sides of this trope. his SuperStrength lets him easily rip his foes limb from limb, sometimes doing so as part of a JackBauerInterrogationTechnique. His HealingFactor also makes him the target of dismemberment. On one occasion, he rips off his own arm to use as fuel for a furnace in order to escape a trap.
* In ''Anime/KillLaKill'', [[spoiler:Nui Harime suffers the loss of both arms thanks to Ryuko.]] Par for the course, /a/ was quick to give [[http://archived.moe/a/thread/103654786/ the perfect response.]]
* During the Choujin Olympics in ''Manga/{{Kinnikuman}}'', Kinkotsuman tries to shoot the title character. He's distracted by Terryman, and his gun goes off, hitting Terryman in the leg. In an aversion of OnlyAFleshWound, Terryman later has to have the leg removed. ({{Bowdlerized}} in the anime, where Terryman still gets shot but doesn't lose his leg.)
* In ''Literature/KyoKaraMaoh'', Conrad loses an arm protecting Yuuri, and [[NeverFoundTheBody it's all their allies find of either of them]] when they arrive on the scene. At turns out, [[spoiler:the arm is the key to unlocking one of four parts of SealedEvilInACan.]]
* Link gets his arm sliced off by King Bulblin in ''Manga/TheLegendOfZeldaTwilightPrincess2016'', but it is magically reattached.
* ''Manga/LivingDead'' plays this to comedic effect as Monako can easily take herself apart. She even plays [[http://img802.imageshack.us/img802/5749/9hh1.png Twister]] with this ability.
* ''Franchise/LyricalNanoha'':
** In ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaStrikers StrikerS]]'', [[spoiler:Ginga Nakajima]] loses her left hand during her battle against the [[QuirkyMinibossSquad Numbers Cyborgs]]. [[spoiler:[[BigBad Jail Scaglietti]] replaced it with an arm that could extend and [[ThisIsADrill spin as a drill]] after he captures her]].
** [[spoiler:Nanoha herself]] loses their right arm and eye during the final battle in ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaDetonation Detonation]]'', both of which are replaced with cyborg replicas in the epilogue.
* The work of Creator/ShirowMasamune has several examples, usually to show just how badass his cyborg heroines are.
** Major Motoko Kusanagi from ''Franchise/GhostInTheShell'' is the ''Queen'' of this trope:
*** Type 1: In [[Anime/GhostInTheShell the first movie]] Motoko ''[[RuleOfCool rips her own arms off]]'' trying to pry open a tank.
*** In ''[[Manga/GhostInTheShell Man Machine Complex]]'' a different Motoko (Motoko Aramaki, Motoko Kusanagi's "daughter" made from cloned tissue, cybernetics and borrowed memories) ejects an arm after it becomes infected by a computer virus.
*** Type 2: Motoko gets an an arm blown off during a kidnapping attempt in the original manga. Being a full-body replacement cyborg it doesn't slow her down much, nor is it permanent. She gets half of her head blown off in ''Ghost in the Shell 1.5'' to much the same effect.
*** In the first season of ''Anime/GhostInTheShellStandAloneComplex'' she loses her left arm fighting an AxeCrazy mook in an armored suit, making her so angry she hammers it repeatedly with point blank shots from an antitank rifle (cocking and firing it one handed) until the operator begs for mercy. After all the times she's lost a limb, she gets to rage a bit.
*** Later in ''Stand Alone Complex'' Togusa pulls an arm off a VillainOfTheWeek with a judo throw. [[FakeArmDisarm It turns out to be a ploy]] because the arm is rigged with a bomb to cover her escape.
** A type 2 in ''Anime/DominionTankPolice''; gynoid Anna Puma gets her arm burned off at the shoulder by the tank police and then objects to Leona characterizing her as a "mechanical love doll" based on the mechanical wreckage that's left.

** Shota Aizawa gets a type 1 when he cuts off his own leg to prevent the effect of a quirk eraser bullet from spreading to the rest of his body.
** Endeavor has a type 2, losing an arm while trying to protect fellow hero Hawks from All For One’s barrage attack.
** Shigaraki pulls a type 3 after getting tired of [[ArcVillain Overhaul’s]] taunts and feeling overshadowed; after Overhaul's arrest, Shigaraki attacks the convoy transporting him and [[TouchOfDeath destroys both of his arms]] while [[EvilIsPetty taunting him with Overhaul's own words]].
* ''Manga/{{Naruto}}'' has a few examples:
** Kaiza had a catch phrase of "protecting the things you love with both arms". When he tried to oppose the mobster Gato, Gato's henchmen defeated him. In the manga, they mocked his catch phrase by chopping his arms off before killing him. In the anime, they crushed his arms with mallets before killing him.
** Besides numerous [[LifeOrLimbDecision self-inflicted ones]] Zaku got his right hand blown off and both arms severely damaged by using the air cannon in his arm while it was jammed with bugs (only in the manga; it was less severe in the anime), Deidara had one arm ripped off by Gaara's sand then the other PortalCut off by Kamui (both were later replaced/repaired by Kakuzu), Jiraiya got his arm ''punched off'' by [[spoiler:Asura Pain]], and [[spoiler:Tobi]] [[ItMakesSenseInContext has lost at least three right arms]] [[DismembermentIsCheap which he always replaces]] [[spoiler:though he did legitimately lose the real one when it got crushed in a cave-in back in the past, which was when it was replaced and made him fine about sacrificing it again and again]].
** The Fourth Raikage is a clear Type 3; he sacrifices his arm and is about to sacrifice his leg to finish off Sasuke.
** [[spoiler:Naruto and Sasuke are a Type 2; they both lose an arm in the series' FinalBattle.]]
* ''Manga/NegimaMagisterNegiMagi'':
** Negi gets an arm cut off while fighting Kagetarou and gets it re-attached later.
** Later on, a flashback reveals that Jack Rakan, got ''both'' his arms cut off when Ala Rubra fought the Lifemaker. Even later, [[spoiler:both his legs and arms are erased from existence by Fate's RealityWarper powers. He uses his artifact to summon Armor legs and arms and [[{{Determinator}} keeps fighting]] until he's wholly erased. When Rakan is BackFromTheDead, his limbs are back with him as well.]]
* ''Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion'':
** One of the Angels almost kills Shinji after severing an arm of Eva-01. Since the Evas are controlled through neural interfaces, he feels all the pain as it was his own arm. Then [[spoiler:the soul of the robot awakens and takes control]] and Eva-01 rips an arm off the Angel and uses it to [[AppendageAssimilation replace its own]].
** [[spoiler:Asuka]]'s arm got sliced in half when [[spoiler:she was being slaughtered by the MP-Evas.]]

** Rei rips Gendou's arm off when he tries to get her to cause Instrumentality.
* ''Manga/OnePiece'' has this by the buckets.
** The most prominent example is Shanks losing his arm after saving a drowning Luffy from a sea creature.
** There's also Zeff, although there are two different versions of this. In the anime, he rescues the young Sanji from drowning by cutting off his own foot, which had become entangled in pieces of the wrecked ships. In the manga, with the two now being ship-wrecked on a small island, he supposedly splits their remaining rations in half. However, it is later revealed he gave everything to Sanji, and instead ate his own leg to survive.
** Doflamingo seems fond of doing this, having sliced the ''giant'' Little Oars Jr.'s leg clean off during the Battle of Marineford. He's also attempted to [[OffWithHisHead decapitate]] at least 3 people.
** "Diamond" Jozu, 3rd division commander of the Whitebeard Pirates, loses an arm to Aokiji's freezing powers during the Battle of Marineford; the rapid freezing leaves even his diamond form vulnerable to shattering.
** Aokiji himself lost a leg in battle with Akainu during their DuelToTheDeath for the Fleet Admiral position during the timeskip; he's created a prosthetic made of ice.
** [[spoiler:Trafalgar Law has his arm cleanly sliced off by ArcVillain Doflamingo during the final battle of the Dressrosa Arc. He later reattaches it with the help of [[MasterOfThreads Leo]] and [[TheMedic Mansherry]].]]
** [[spoiler:Kyros, the legendary gladiator of the Dressrosa coliseum, lopped off his own leg when caught in leg braces and leaped at Doflamingo in an attempt to kill him during the latter's initial takeover of Dressrosa. Unfortunately, he was stopped before he could reach him, but he did briefly catch Doflamingo by surprise.]]
** Used at least twice for comedic value courtesy of Zoro, who suggests cutting off the offending limb whenever he gets caught in handcuffs or ankle braces, [[DudeNotFunny to the horror of his crewmates]].
** [[TheBrute Jack]] the [[PersonOfMassDestruction Drought]] chopped off Inuarashi's left leg and Nekomamushi's left hand when he attacked Zou. By the time of the Onigashima Raid they have replaced them with a [[ArmedLegs sword]] and a [[ArmCannon gun]], respectively.
** [[spoiler:Charlotte Perospero is grievously injured and missing his right arm, courtesy of Pedro's [[SuicideAttack suicide bomb attack.]] He can use his Devil Fruit powers to grow [[ArtificialLimbs a new arm made of candy]], but it's quite susceptible to heat. He even complains that he won't be able to drink afternoon tea without his arm melting.]]
** Kaido cuts Kiku's left arm via RazorWind {{breath|Weapon}}. Kin'emon cauterizes the wound before she loses too much blood, however.
** Eustass Kid lost his left arm in a fight with the Red Hair Pirates during the TimeSkip, after which he [[MagnetismManipulation assembled a prosthetic with metal scrap]]. [[spoiler:[[ChekhovsGun This becomes relevant during the Wano Country arc]], when [[HollywoodVoodoo Basil Hawkins binds himself to Kid via voodoo doll]] while fighting Killer, leaving the latter unable to defeat Hawkins without killing his captain. He manages to work around this when he realizes he can sever the connection by severing the left arm of Hawkins, leaving the damage with nowhere to go since Kid has already lost that arm. Hawkins doesn't last long after that.]]
* ''Manga/PandoraHearts'': A Type 1 example with Jack having his body split into five parts (arms, legs, and head) in order to seal away Glen Baskerville's soul. [[spoiler:Retrace LXV reveals that it was Oswald/Glen's body that was dismembered and that it may have been a Type 3 example after all...]]
** Retrace LXXVIII has a Type 1 example: [[spoiler:Gil severs his left arm in order to free himself from Oswald/Glen's control and save Oz from execution.]]
** Xerxes Break cuts off Leo's left hand while fighting
** Will of the Abyss pulls out Kevin's left eye to give it to Cheshire.
* This happens to [[spoiler: protagonist Shinichi]] during the final volume of ''Manga/{{Parasyte}}''; Migi, [[ItMakesSenseInContext his alien right hand who can manipulate his form to help Shinichi fight,]] [[spoiler: devises a battle strategy against Gotou in which he'll detatch himself from Shinchi's body to circumvent Gotou's parasyte detection sixth sense -- he won't be able to tell where Shinichi is since he'll become wholly human without Migi, so he'll sneak-attack Gotou while Migi serves as a distraction. When Migi attempts to slice Gotou's head off, the cut doesn't go deep enough, so he's able to heal himself; Migi [[YouShallNotPass stays behind to hold him back]] and demands that Shinichi run for his life. He reluctantly escapes, but he now only has one arm to defend himself with when he goes back to try to finish Gotou off. He gets his arm back; the remnants of Migi's cells inside Shinichi's body manage to join together to form Migi again.]]
* Type 3 in ''Anime/PrincessTutu'': The [[AncientConspiracy Book Men]] chop the hands off anyone they find [[spoiler:RewritingReality. After Drosselmeyer just ''kept on going'' without his hands, one wonders why they didn't switch to heads...]]
* Squalo from ''Manga/Reborn2004'' cuts off his left hand to better understand the techniques of the previous sword emperor.
* ''Literature/RebuildWorld'': All type 2, during battle.
** The ShellShockedVeteran Colbert is left with a TraumaButton about monsters because they ate both his arms in the past. He could only afford his right arm being regrown and the left is a prosthetic.
** When Akira fights an AttackOfThe50FootWhatever version of the TragicMonster Tiol, he ends up delivering the killing blow by leaping InASingleBound using his PoweredArmor and firing his weapons full auto at Tiol’s face at NoRangeLikePointBlankRange. This destroys all four of Akira’s limbs but they get expensively regrown off-screen.
** When Nelia gets cut into HalfTheWomanSheUsedToBe by Tsubaki, one of her arms gets jammed in the wreckage of her MiniMecha and comes off. As Nelia's a FullConversionCyborg, she eventually switches to a fresh prosthetic body.
** Akira using HomingProjectile rocket propelled grenade bullets at NoRangeLikePointBlankRange to kill an enemy blows off one of his arms, and the stump is sealed off by his expensive HealingPotion. This time, we see the medical procedure for re-growing a cultured arm, linking it up with his nerves, and transplanting it onto him. Akira wore a temporary prosthetic in the meantime which worries the visiting Sheryl.
* ''Manga/RecordOfRagnarok'':
** With the exception of the battle between Adam and Zeus, every battle in the series has involved at least one of the two fighters losing a limb:
*** Lü Bu vs. Thor: Lü Bu's legs are fractured when he blocks Thor's Geirröd attack, [[spoiler:and gets his left arm and right leg torn off by Thor's final attack, as well as losing his right arm soon after by tearing off what's left of it with his teeth]].
*** Sasaki Kojiro vs. Poseidon: [[spoiler:Sasaki cuts off Poseidon's right arm with his ''Swallow Tiger Combo, Thousand Blades'' technique, then quickly follows it up by cutting off Poseidon's left arm, forcing him to [[CutlassBetweenTheTeeth hold his trident with his mouth]]]].

*** Raiden Tameemon vs. Shiva: [[spoiler:[[MultiArmedAndDangerous Shiva]] loses one of his arms when Raiden crushes it with his grip, then gets two more torn off when attempting to block Raiden's DangerousForbiddenTechnique. Shiva ends up returning the favor at the end of the fight, using his ''[[RoundhouseKick Deva Loka]]'' attack to bisect Raiden's right arm, with the upper half of the arm quickly falling off afterwards]]. However, during the interim between Rounds 9 and 10, [[spoiler:it's shown that Shiva's treatment in the arena's infirmary has allowed him to regenerate his missing arms]].
*** [[spoiler:Buddha]] vs. Bishamonten[[spoiler:/Zerofuku/Hajun]]: [[spoiler:Hajun's left arm is cut deeply by Buddha's [[SinisterScythe Salakayas]], leading him to rip it off so as to [[LovecraftianSuperpower transform it into a sword]] for him to wield. 208*** King Leonidas vs. Apollo: This round has a more [[DownplayedTrope downplayed]] case of this. Apollo's right arm is damaged when Leonidas deflects one of his [[LightEmUp arrows of light]] back at him. While the arm itself is intact, it ends up damaged to the point that he can no longer use his bow. [[spoiler:He still chooses to use the arm for his final attack immediately after, and while its successful in breaking through Leonidas' shield, the attack mangles the arm even further]].

* ''Manga/RurouniKenshin'': Kenshin once chopped the arm off of a random {{Mook}} he was fighting, and since he's already taking his vow of non-killing by them, let the man live.
