One of the most recognizable cereal mascots of all time, Captain Horatio Magellan Crunch, Cap'n Crunch for short, is the mascot for his namesake cereal, produced by Quaker Oats. The character was created by Creator/JayWard and voiced by Creator/DawsButler, in imitation of actor [[https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0125325/ Charles Butterworth]]. Cap'n Crunch sailed the Milk Seas in the S.S. Guppy in search of adventure, joined by his loyal crew, Seadog, Alfie, Dave, Brunhilde, and Carlyle.

Debuting in 1963, the character's adventures were unique for the time in that they were serialized from commercial to commercial, with recurring characters as well as enemies for the good captain to fight, including the lovesick Magnolia Bulkhead and her dimwit assistant Otis, fearsome pirate Jean [=LaFoote=], who got his own spinoff cereal, and the extraterrestrial Soggies and their leader, the Sogmaster. Several storylines were continued for months or more, including a "Where's the Captain?" promo in 1985 and 1999 where Cap'n Crunch went missing and the kids of the world had to find him.

The cereal is also notable for the ''huge'' number of spinoff products, including but not limited to Cinnamon Crunch, Crunch Berries, Vanilly Crunch, Punch Crunch, Peanut Butter Crunch, and Oops! All Berries, as well as tie-in merchandise, board games, and video games. Clearly, the power of crunchy cereal is not to be underestimated.

!!Oops! All Tropes:
* AbandonedMascot: Cap'n Crunch had a bunch of other mascots he shared the box with until the late 80s. The cereals then dropped the secondary mascots and just kept the Cap'n. These would include Wilma the Vanilla Whale, the Crunch Berry Beast, and the Soggies.
* BadassInDistress: The [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGaJP4UOSR8 Free the]] [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Co00e8J0m7Q Cap'n ads]] and the Spider-Man crossover ad had Cap'n Crunch captured by the Sogmaster, with kids and Spidey [[https://www.cbr.com/spider-man-capn-crunch-missing-mystery/ going]] to rescue him.
* BreakoutVillain: Jean [=LaFoote=] started off as Cap'n Crunch's arch-rival, but became so popular he got a cereal of his own, and he's the longest-lasting villain by far.
* ChuckCunninghamSyndrome: Characters have disappeared over the years, with Magnolia Bulkhead being the first to go.
* CloudCuckooland: Crunch Island's wildlife included singing trees and baseball bats, which were baseballs with eyes and bat wings. One known town is Practical Joking Ghost Town (full of {{silly spook}}s that play really dated jokes on visitors) and the central mountain--Mt. Crunchmore--carved in the shape of its discoverer's face.
* ContinuityCavalcade: The back of the [[http://commercialicons.blogspot.com/2018/01/ Touchdown Crunch]] box from 2018 showcased many of the Captain's old allies and enemies, including Magnolia, the Crunchling, and the Crunchberry Beast.
* FairPlayVillain: The Crunchium Thief from the game agrees to give up the crunchium if he's defeated in a contest.
* FourFingeredHands: As seen in the image, the good captain has only four fingers per hand.
* HeelFaceTurn: According to Quaker Oats, the Soggies finally got bored of losing to Cap'n Crunch and have now found honest jobs for themselves as quality control testers at the AFCO Sponge Company.
* TheLeader: The Sogmaster, leader of the Soggies.
* OutOfCharacterAlert: In an early '70s TV commercial for the short-lived Cap'n Crunch variant Vanilly Crunch, the good captain's ship is approached by Wilma the Whale, the mascot for that cereal. After the captain does a description of the cereal, he shoots a cannon at the whale! Turns out that pirate Jean [=LaFoote=] had disguised his now-sinking vessel as Wilma. Cap'n Crunch knew it because he described Vanilly Crunch and the whale didn't smile.
* OverlyLongName: Horatio Magellan Crunch is his full name.
* PeeveGoblins: The Soggies, villainous creatures that looked like globs of milk that sought to sog out kids' Cap'n Crunch cereal to no avail.
* {{Prehistoria}}: The 1999 [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jBg6CXdZUoA Where's the Cap'n]] storyline climaxed in the subterranean land of Volcanica and resulted in the birth of Volcano Crunch.
* RaisingSim: ''Cap'n Crunch's Crunchling Adventure'' was a PC game where the player raised a Crunchling to be strong enough to defeat the Crunchium Thief.
* SharedUniverse: Cap'n Crunch also appeared in ads for Advertising/QuispAndQuake, two rivaling cereal mascots, with the poor Cap'n caught in the middle.
* ShoutOut: The [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbaWeQNkUPk music video]] for the ''Where's the Cap'n'' song mentions Creator/{{MTV}} and contains parodies of ''Series/StarTrekTheOriginalSeries'' and Creator/MrT, among other networks.
* SirensAreMermaids: One commercial has Magnolia Bulkhead disguise herself as a mermaid and use a recording of an alluring song to sink Crunch's ship and get his cereal.
* TheSmurfettePrinciple: Brunhilde was the only girl among Cap'n Crunch's crew.
* TransAtlanticEquivalent: Cap'n Crunch cereal was never exported to Britain, but the central theme of the adverts was adapted into Cap'n Birdseye, the salty old seadog who was the Face of Birdseye fish fingers for a few decades, leading a crew of kids in similar exploits.
* UncertainDoom: [[https://www.sbnation.com/2015/5/4/8547709/the-dark-twitter-story-of-capn-crunch-his-dog-and-a-pirate-that The official Cap'n Crunch Twitter]] had a storyline where Jean [=LaFoote=], wounded, was last seen jumping into the sea and never posted again.
* WeaponizedHeadgear: Cap'n Crunch not only has a hat ([[BroughtToYouBytheLetterS with a "C" on the front]], in case you forget his name) but it has been known to double as a weapon sometimes, usually when the Soggies are his enemies. In one commercial, it conceals a miniature Gatling gun (which uses his [[EdibleAmmunition cereal as ammunition]], naturally) and in another, he folds it into a working boomerang.
* WeirdCrossover: ComicBook/SpiderMan crossed over with Cap'n Crunch to battle the Soggies, though the conclusion to the story was never published.
* WhyDontYouMarryIt: In an ad for Peanut Butter Crunch, a boy says that he loves Peanut Butter Crunch. His snarky little sister asks why he doesn't marry it if he loves it that much. He replies that maybe he will and imagines being married to the cereal by Cap'n Crunch, then going surfing with it, into outer space and being interviewed by a talk show host about his marriage to it.
* WickedWeasel: The Peanut Butter Weasel in the Peanut Butter Crunch commercials.
