- Typically of its "make it up as you go along" (or as one script editor notoriously said, "continuity is whatever I can remember happened") approach to Canon, the Whoniverse never had any such thing, until the late '80's when the production team referred to "the Cartmel Masterplan" (named after the then-script editor) which revealed the Doctor's hidden Back Story, which they intended to leak out slowly. The Expanded Universe novels spilled the beans. Speaking of which, the Expanded Universe books, at least initially, had a consistent future history and at least a sketchy background for the Whoniverse, which the original series never did. That background fell by the wayside for reasons too esoteric to get into here.
