Micah: Sherlock Holmes and the Doctor (the Doctor by me) were brought up in the YKKTW, but I don't think they actually fit—they're Insufferable Geniuses, but of a more passive variety.

Blue Byrd: Until someone can explain how one might tell "undeserved handicaps" from other kinds, I'm shelving this one:

  1. Often have some substantial (usually undeserved) handicap, such that being demonstrably and dramatically more awesome than anyone else is the only way they can get by.
Also, I hope I'm not the only one seeing how the latter part of that sentence has Unfortunate Implications.

Micah: I wrote that sentence, and I didn't mean "handicap" in the sense of "disability", but in the more general sense of "thing that makes life more difficult" (Miles and his physical ailments may apply here, but so too do Kvothe's lack of money and Thrawn's alien-ness in the human-biased Imperium). Certainly my phrasing was... unfortunate at the very least, and I'm sorry about that; at the same time, the current way that point is worded clearly means something different than what I intended. It's late enough that I'm not feeling competent to try to untangle this at the moment, but maybe we can hash it out over the next few days?
