New English troper here; I always thought that "goombah" (with a longer second syllable) was the derogitory word whereas "goomba" (prounced like goombuh) was just nonsense (though obviously based on the other word).
Big T: Nope. They were originally the same word. The short a pronunciation came before the Super Mario Bros. Nowadays, you may find people that make that distinction, but most just think you are mispronouncing the other.
