Captain Joystick: Not sure if this counts, but a number of anime series under Yoshiyuki Tomino tend to employ something like this to depict a character's reaction to something happening in the other panel, typically in situations where the characters themselves are in the midst of what is happening, but somehow obscured from view. Typically, it will involve, for example, two main characters fighting in humongus mecha while engaging dialogue, a small cross section of the screen (typically a wedge in one quarter of the screen, etc) will show the pilot as they speak.
