Working Title: Smart Staff: From YKTTW

Regarding the oddness of the fullsized staff being called a quarterstaff: The term quarterstaff refers to the primary historical technique wherein the staff is gripped about a quarter of the way from one end and held mostly vertically. What you see in the Robin Hood movies where they grip it equidistant from the ends and hold it horizontally is called "halfstaff", and if the surviving manuals of fence from the Elizabethan Era are to be trusted, it was considered a less effective technique.
