Eric DVH: "I've got an idea! How about we make a movie about suburban middle-class neighborhoods, only, you know, everyone is secretly a repressed homosexual drug addict that gets raped by their dad and lets off steam by beating up niggers. That'd be, like, really deep and analytical, Beavis!" This kind of garbage isn't a deconstruction or subversion of anything at all. Every time I see this pop up, it seems even more tired and overwrought than the last. I mean, this sort of thing isn't subject to Trope Evolution, it just goes straight from New Idea to Dead Horse Trope before the script is even greenlit for production.

Duckay: The more I think about it, the more I wonder if the genuinely wholesome 50's neighbourhood is a Dead Unicorn Trope. I can think of countless examples of people toying with the trope, but it feels like it comes from the same place as 'The Butler Did It'. Edited to add - after some thought, I've come up with tonnes of examples, so pretty much just completely disregard my above comment. I would delete it, but I'll leave it there so you can see that I had a stupid moment.

Mike S: Deleted "I don't know whether berating is hypocrytical. I don't remember whether she told that she was never like that." (re Back to the Future) Lorraine: "I think it's terrible. Girls chasing boys. When I was your age I never chased a boy, or called a boy, or sat in a parked car with a boy."

  • Nobodymuch: Of course since she nearly got raped sitting in a parked car with a boy she does have a reason for her Do As I Say attitude.
