Fsst Eddie: Pulled this:

Often includes the ironic (if perhaps denied) appropriateness of the casting, which doesn’t limit itself due to issues of gender, age, or even acting ability (which is usually as shoddy as the props and backgrounds).May also apply to a narrative sequence where a character tells a child a bedtime story using the cast as "actors".

... because it kind of wanders around the point.

Code Man 38: Would the amateur movie from Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu count as an example of this trope?

Taper W: I'd think so — and add Itsuki's class's production of Rozencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead to boot. (Is there a Student Film trope?)

Dracula On A Bike: I removed this:

The (infamous) "Mihoshi's Fairy Tale" episode of the original Tenchi Muyo OVA series, which among other things cast Washuu as the Big Bad and Sasami as Magical Girl Pretty Sammy (who later was spun off into her own series).

because it doesn't take place in a school, and it's not a play either (it's a story told by Mihoshi to the other characters). This is really an example of Framing Device rather than this trope, and it's already included on that page.
