"Justified if the story is set in a time before ST Ds developed; however, this isn't usually the case."
There was no "time before ST Ds developed". Sexually Transmitted Diseases have always been a part of the world. The idea of a magical time when people had wild sex without ever having a risk of disease is pure fantasy. —KEVP

- An aversion that kills the mood with Fridge Logic: Woman's husband dies, so she does what any sensible grieving widow would do and gets a voodoo priestess to summon the ghost of her dead husband for some hanky-panky. In the ensuing scene, the "ghost" is clearly and nonsensically wearing a condom.
