Ununnilium: IMHO, this should be solely when they aren't the original creator; this would rule out both Dune and the Fourth World.
Later: Thus, taking them out:
- Many comic book fans have a reverence of Jack Kirby's Fourth World series, mirrored in comic book companies who have always been hesitant to un-cancel his personal baby. Ironically, fans have been just as mad about the implication to end that universe even though it was never intended to be a long-running series, citing the event as a cheap way to sell books.
- Frank Herbert did this for the Dune series. Of course, it doesn't hurt that Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson are a pair of hacks....
Also, taking out "Naturally, this is troublesome, if not downright annoying, if this is not the original owner or creator." ...because, um, how so? O.o
