Working Title: Goodies Are Democratic Baddies Are Fascist: From YKTTW

Man Without A Body: Removed this example, because of the obvious flaw here: if you have a king, as Sparta did, you aren't a republic. In fact, the Sparta presented in the film is borderline fascist in and of itself, whether "justified" or otherwise.

  • 300
    • This troper questions 300's inclusion. Leonidas clearly ignores his council's advice and takes Sparta to war by his will alone.
      • Leonidas was justified, however, in defending his people, and his council was corrupt in the first place. Also, he only led 300 volunteers, not all of Sparta.

Real Slim Shadowen: Fixed this because, guess what, this is called natter.

  • An odd and somewhat unpleasant counterexample is 300, in which the protagonists are a constitutional monarchy, but the Senate are shown as corrupt and constraining on the heroic king, who kills unarmed messengers when he gets angry. Women are granted some respect, because "Only Spartan women give birth to real men," which happens to be a slightly paraphrased line of Nazi propaganda quite in line with the racial purity shown in the film's Sparta. is actually a paraphrase of a real Spartan quote. By contrast, The Persian Empire is multiethnic and gay-tolerant. If you know your history, you'll also know that they were religiously tolerant and had a concept of universal human rights.
    • Godwin's Law was invoked here to try and subvert this trope further.

Real Slim Shadowen: Removed this line, because, well, this is a question for the discussion page, so, y'know, I put it here. So, um, discuss, I guess?:

"Um... Why does the above list have so many subversions and inversions, and so few straight examples?"
