Tanto: What's with people using Game-Breaker in non-video-game-related contexts lately? That just feels wrong to me.

Fire Walk: Agreed, as it seems to say that it's a video game trope. Also how is this that different from You Can Barely Stand?

G-Force: Actually the trope is listed under as a fight scene trope. During the YKTTW discussion, no on contributing during the discussion of the trope had and issue with the name which is why I think it stayed the same. From my analysis it seems like the major difference between You Can Barely Stand and this trope is that a Game-Breaking Injury is the specific moment in the character's development where they're taken out of their physical peak either by accident or by direct cause of the villain while You Can Barely Stand describes more of a physical state and does not go into the specifics of the character's sounds. An example of the difference of the two would be...

  • If The Hero fatigued after fighting off the villain's Elite Mooks is an example of You Can Barely Stand. The Hero's fatigue and the piling of their wounds leads to a more general physical breakdown.
  • If The Hero was stabbed in the leg by an Elite Mook then fights the main villain and can no longer move at the same speed then that's a Game-Breaking Injury as the Hero's entire strategy is ruined because of this specific wound.

Another main difference between the tropes is how the villain chooses to to chip the hero down.

  • If the villain gets a lucky backstab and just fights the hero as normal by just attacking him then its an example of You Can Barely Stand. The Hero's weakened state is more generalized and he seems to be hurting overall because of the stab wound as opposed to clutching a specific limb.
  • Now if the villain gets a lucky backstab and takes ever moment to claw at the gaping hole while at the same time The Hero's main offensive options have greatly been reduced due to the fact that their good arm has been rendered useless then it's a Game-Breaking Injury.
