From YKTTW — discussion of Hollywood angels.

Licky Lindsay: I assume its safe to say this a Discredited Trope now?

Kizor: That would assume that it was ever credited in the first place.

Rastilin: I've seen people doing this in fanfiction, yeah I know, fanfiction, but it's especially irritating when it was already established in the original series that the universe operates according to Buddhist principles. Some people don't get that there are other religions which believe different things.

Ununnilium: Dangit. I can't find the link to an article I read about the modern depiction of cherubim vs. the Biblical version. Basically, the word "cherub" got mixed up with the word for "child", or something? Hrm.
Mister Six: Am I the only one who thinks that quote is a little bit too loaded?

Andyzero: I like it. The depiction really doesn't exist in religion anywhere.

Licky Lindsay: Whether or not it ever existed as real religious teaching (I'm sure it didn't), was it ever played completely straight in any medium?
Eric DVH: Removed following wankery:
  • Lampshaded in Paul Robinson's Instrument Of God in which during orientation in the Afterlife, the speaker says:
"You're not really inside that body that you think you are in, sitting there listening to me. What you have that you think you are sitting inside of is something that we made you think you have because it's easier for you to understand what is going on around you if you have something similar to what you had on earth. It was easier for you if we simply made things similar to earth. Because it was easier for us when we got here.
"Oh we could have done lots of other things. Put up a representation of heaven, have all the things people expect, pearly gates, clouds, painted the entrance all white, have people wear wings, etc., and most of you would accept it as heaven.
"We could have implemented a very hot environment, put rocks and flowing lava out, painted the place in shades of red, implemented the smell of brimstone, have people walk around with pointy tails, red suits and carrying pitchforks, and most of you would accept it as hell.
"We didn't go either of these routes because they weren't necessary. Actually, since most of us liked the way things were on earth, and by duplicating it to a certain degree, it makes it easier for you to manage when you get here, we decided to stick with a world with a format similar to earth, but with a number of differences as we saw fit."

Houdini, too lazy to sign in... I saw a commercial the other day for some tax thing where a guardian angel was having a discussion with 'the tax guy', but I can't find enough information to put that into relevance...
