Cryptic Mirror: At the risk of opening the Lumper vs Splitter debate, it's a subtrope and should probably be noted as that. Specific criminal types avoid guns and if a creator wants to send a message about a specific type of criminal then one of the ways to establish their character is to say something along the lines of "I may be X, but I don't use guns" and we all know exactly the character type. Which is pretty much the definition of a trope.
Kilyle: Yeah, this is a very specific subtrope with details that don't apply to the more general trope. Interesting trope, btw.
