<random troper>: This trope and its examples need a major overhaul, as it is grossly guilty of Did Not Do The Research. Just because speaking out against the ruling elite is seen as a minor offense by enlightened postmodern Westerners doesn't make it a valid example of uniformly draconian justice. In fact, in a lot of both historical and contemporary cultures dissent actually *is* considered as bad as things like rape and murder, and thus the punishment wholly justified in that context. So this trope needs to much more specific in requiring that all crimes, not just certain crimes we feel to be minor based on our own values, be punished equally.
