Eugène Delacroix's Liberty Leading the People has been referenced in quite a few works.
Anime & Manga
- The painting appears in the Gainax Ending of Belladonna of Sadness.
- One Piece. Belo Betty's topless appearance, flag carrying and waving, rallying based abilities, and being a revolutionary make her one big shout out to Liberty.
- The cast of Shimoneta poses like Liberty Leading the People in the anime credits.
Literature
- In Les Misérables, Victor Hugo based the character of Gavroche off the young boy seen on the right side of the painting.
- The Night of Wishes has an illustration showing captive fairy creatures breaking free and starting a revolt.
Live-Action TV
- The painting is discussed in episode 7 of Vincenzo. At the end of the episode the protesters, having made a breakthrough, are posed in a way that is evocative of it, with a woman in the center-right bearing a flag.
Music
- Coldplay: The painting is used for the standard cover of the album Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends.
- Mylène Farmer: "Desenchantee" has imagery reminiscent of the painting as the singer is rebelling in a concentration camp.
Video Games
- Liberty Leading the People is one of the paintings you can examine for forgeries in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
Western Animation
- Adventure Time, "The Pajama War". The title card is a recreation of the painting.
- Miraculous Ladybug, "Mayura": The static shot of the citizens of Paris at the barricade is a horizontally flipped homage to the painting. To really hang the lampshade, the original appears as a mural on the wall beside the barricade.
- Nora represents Liberty, and both of them show more skin than is usual for street clothes (but not the same area of skin, because this is a children’s show).
- Luka Couffaine represents the student brandishing pistols standing next to Liberty on the opposite side to her flag hand.
- Tom Dupain represents the craftsman standing on the other side, with a baguette substituting for the sabre of the original.
- Anarka Couffaine represents the member of the bourgeoisie in the top hat.
