* [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Midway The Battle of Midway]] during the Pacific War is a notable example... and a case of this backfiring. The Japanese Navy, under the command of Admiral Yamamoto, needed to destroy the US Navy's Aircraft Carriers that have been hampering their operations in the Pacific. To do this, Yamamoto and the Navy planned on capturing the American-controlled Midway Island, a small-but-strategically-important atoll/island roughly equidistant between North America and Asia. In response, the US Navy would send their carriers and a task force to recapture the island; but once they arrived, Yamamoto would spring his trap: the Japanese Navy would surprise & ambush them with their own carriers (and later battleships & cruiser in a separate task force) lying in wait to destroy the US Pacific Fleet for good. ''However'', this plan began to fall apart before it started; the Americans had intercepted the Japanese Naval Code and learned their plans & approximate naval dispositions. In response, US Navy Admiral Nimitz created his own trap to destroy the enemy. Once the Japanese Aircraft Carriers arrived to begin their assault, they were ambushed by the very same American Carriers they sought to destroy, resulting in the Japanese Task Force losing ''all'' their own carriers in the battle.

It turns out that Vladimir and Anatoly kidnapped the boy purely as bait for Matt. He's gravely wounded trying to rescue the boy, and ends up being found in a dumpster with multiple injuries--turns outside Claire Temple's building. ** In "[[Recap/Daredevil2015S1E9SpeakOfTheDevil Speak of the Devil]]", Wilson Fisk has Elena Cardenas killed knowing that Matt will be enraged enough by her death to come out and confront him. Matt takes the bait, and ends up being ambushed by Nobu, Fisk having set Nobu and Matt up to take each other out without him dirtying his own hands. When Matt manages to survive this duel, albeit badly wounded, Fisk enters the room, accompanied by James Wesley and Francis.
--->'''Wilson Fisk:''' Thank you. Nobu
was becoming an issue. I appreciate you removing him from concern.\\
'''Matt Murdock:''' You...you ''wanted'' me to do this.\\
'''Wilson Fisk:''' In
a setup by perfect world, you would have taken each other out, but it isn't a perfect world, is it? Not yet. To be honest, it took longer than I expected. Nobu didn't mind. He meditated for hours. I find it difficult to meditate. My mind, it won't quiet. It's a character flaw, I suppose. We all have them. You, for instance. You've demonstrated an emotional weakness for children and women. I assumed that would extend to the Russian mafia who were out elderly. So I baited the hook. Here you are.\\
'''Matt Murdock:''' You took her life just
to get Daredevil.my attention?\\
'''Wilson Fisk:''' Nobu forced my hand in the matter. My options, they were limited by necessity. I took no pleasure in her passing.\\
'''Matt Murdock:''' ''[staggering towards Fisk]'' I'm gonna kill you.\\
'''Wilson Fisk:''' ''[spreads his arms]'' [[BringIt Take your shot!]]

Rain Bonteri, the protagonist, is frustrated by not being allowed to attack, but General Tann privately discusses with Admiral Trench that Bonteri is being deliberately hamstrung so that he doesn't immediately annihilate his opponent -- thus drawing more Republic reinforcements, which will be further out of position when Operation Storm-Door begins.
